Watch: Intense 1-Minute Short Film ‘Reentry’ Following an Astronaut

“Just holy steady, Sonny… Entry is looking beautiful.” This is how you do it! Make something for nothing and impress everyone! Reentry is a fantastic 1-minute long short (well, 80 seconds to be precise) made by filmmaker Scott Jeschke. We’ve featured his shorts before (Mimic) this is also worth a watch. It debuted on Twittter and is now available on YouTube in HD (view below). The short is an experiment in showing just how much storytelling you can pull off in 1 minute and how it’s ALL made by Scott, without any AI, or crew, or extra money, or anything. “I retaught myself basic VFX compositing in After Effects, and put many hours into making this a fully-human-made piece that I could be proud of,” he explains. An astronaut experiences an intense reentry into Earth’s atmosphere. But there’s also a very clever sci-fi nod at the end. Click on play.

Reentry Short Film

Very brief synopsis via YouTube: “Plunging through reentry, a lone astronaut clings to fragments of another life.” Reentry is a one-minute short film created and directed by filmmaker Scott Jeschke – you can view more of his work on his official website or visit his YT page or follow him on Twitter @ScottJeschke or on IG @scottjeschkefilm. He’s currently based in Raleigh, NC and has made other shorts including the submarine short Mimic in 2021. Reentry was created entirely by Scott: “[It was] made in my garage with no budget, no crew, and NO AI. “What if something followed me back?” “Find out what the ‘what’ is, okay?” Vertical has unveiled the main official trailer for 2025’s The Astronaut, a sci-fi thriller from filmmaker Jessica Varley making her feature directorial debut. It lands in theaters in the US starting in October – because it is seriously creepy and they want it to play during horror season. After returning from her first space mission barely surviving re-entry, astronaut Sam Walker is placed under NASA’s care at a high security house for rehab and medical testing isolated out in the woods. However, when disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth. Is it real or is it just in her head? Or is it something else entirely? 👽 Starring Kate Mara as Sam, Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Luna, Ivana Milicevic, & Macy Gray. This originally premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. This is a much better trailer than the first look promo we also posted. This looks like an unsettling thriller that will play up the mystery of “what is really going on?!” right up until the last moment. I’m very curious now…

Required to be quarantined, her adopted father General William Harris places Sam under NASA surveillance in a high security house, isolated in the woods. Reunited with her husband, Sam appears to be re-acclimating and preparing for her next mission. When disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth, and the agencies meant to protect her are endangering her life. Not even those close to her can be trusted. The Astronaut is written and directed by American indie filmmaker Jess Varley, making her feature directorial debut after a few other shorts. It’s produced by Brad Fuller, Eric B. Fleischman, Chris Abernathy, Cameron Fuller. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. Vertical will release Jess Varley’s The Astronaut film in select US theaters starting October 17th, 2025 coming up this fall. Want to watch this?

What did she bring back? Signature Entertainment has revealed a first look promo for a movie called The Astronaut, a sci-fi thriller from filmmaker Jessica Varley making her feature directorial debut. It’s out on VOD now in the UK (but only there). This isn’t exactly the most original idea – it sounds similar to so many other sci-fi thrillers before it. After returning from her first space mission, astronaut Sam Walker is placed under NASA’s care at a high security house for rehab and medical testing isolated in the woods. However, when disturbing occurrences begin happening around the property, she fears that something extraterrestrial has followed her back to Earth. Is it real or is it just in her head? Starring Kate Mara as Sam, Laurence Fishburne, Gabriel Luna, Ivana Milicevic, & Macy Gray. This originally premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. It’s being released in the UK directly to VOD starting today (September 22nd) but still has no US release yet. Not a good sign for this one, despite the interesting premise it seems like it’s a dud (reviews say the same). This is a chilling way to introduce the film – watch out for it if you are curious.
