Court Says “No” To Tory’s Appeal

After months of silence surrounding one of hip-hop’s most talked-about cases, a major update has hit the timeline — and it’s not the news Tory Lanez was hoping for. According to new court documents obtained by journalist Meghann Cuniff, the California Court of Appeals has officially denied Tory Lanez’s request to overturn his felony convictions and 10-year prison sentence for the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion.

“On appeal, Peterson contends the trial court committed a number of errors. We find no prejudicial error and, accordingly, affirm Peterson’s conviction,” reveals court documents.

In the appeal, Lanez’s legal team argued that he was unfairly convicted and sought a new trial, but the judges didn’t see it that way. After reviewing his claims, the court decided to uphold the original ruling, meaning Tory will continue serving the 10-year sentence he received back in August 2023. This decision adds yet another twist to the long-running case that’s divided fans and dominated headlines. Lanez has continued to maintain his innocence from behind bars, while Megan has seemingly moved forward — staying booked, busy, and focused on her music.

Tory Lanez’s father doesn’t appear to be stopping his push for his son’s release. During a sit-down with POWER 106 back in July, Sonstar Peterson opened up about Tory’s incarceration and dropped some bold claims about what’s happening behind the scenes. When asked about a possible release date, he kept things vague, saying he wouldn’t “go on record” but hinted that “movements [were] happening in the background” and that the so-called powers that be could see “this was a hatched job.” Sonstar insisted Tory’s return home was coming “much sooner than…people think.”

At the time, fans were already buzzing about alleged inconsistencies in the case — from conflicting witness statements to questions surrounding gun residue evidence. Sonstar’s confidence made it clear he believed Tory’s legal team was still fighting to overturn his conviction. However, Megan Thee Stallion’s camp quickly shut down any talk of new evidence, making it clear that, as far as they’re concerned, the case was closed.

Diddy Wants Fast-Tracked Appeal Over Prostitution Conviction, Sentence

UPDATE (Nov. 3): The Second Circuit Court of Appeals granted Combs’ unopposed motion to expedite his appeal on Monday (Nov. 3). Combs’ first appellate brief is due next month, and arguments are tentatively on track for April.

PREVIOUSLY: Sean “Diddy” Combs is trying to expedite his criminal appeal, saying he could be close to getting out of prison by the time his case is heard if forced to follow the typical, drawn-out argument timeline.

Combs is challenging both his July conviction and the resulting four-year prison sentence for arranging the drug-fueled sex marathons, known as “freak-offs,” between his girlfriends and male escorts. Jurors found Combs guilty of illegal prostitution, but they acquitted him of more serious racketeering and sex-trafficking charges.

As is the case in much of the court system, appellate procedure is usually slow. In the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, where Combs’ case will be heard, it takes nearly a year and a half on average to get a criminal appeal decided.

Combs’ lawyers don’t want to wait that long. They say in a Wednesday (Oct. 29) court filing that he could complete most of his prison sentence during the typical appeal timeline; Combs is getting credit for the year he’s already spent in jail, plus the sentence could be further trimmed down for good behavior or participation in a drug abuse rehab program.

“An expedited briefing and argument schedule is critical to ensure that Mr. Combs’s appeal of his sentence does not become moot while the appeal is pending,” writes his attorney, Alexandra Shapiro. “To ensure that Mr. Combs could meaningfully benefit from any appellate ruling vacating his sentence, we have proposed a schedule that would expedite this court’s consideration of Mr. Combs’s appeal.”

Shapiro suggests that the lawyers submit all their legal briefs by March and deliver oral arguments in April — that is, she wants the case heard just six months after Combs’ notice of appeal last week.

Wednesday’s court filing says prosecutors have consented to this expedited briefing schedule. This means it’s likely to get approved, absent scheduling conflicts from the Second Circuit.

A rep for the prosecution did not immediately return a request for comment. Shapiro said in a statement to Billboard, “Sean’s appeal will challenge the unfair use of the Mann Act, an infamous statute with a sordid history, to prosecute him for sex with consenting adults.”

The Mann Act, which makes it illegal to transport people across state lines for prostitution, indeed has an ugly past. Originally called the White-Slave Traffic Act of 1910, it has its roots in a government campaign to criminalize interracial relationships. Combs’ legal team said from the beginning of the case that Mann Act prostitution counts were improperly tacked onto his sex-trafficking indictment, and this argument has taken center stage since Combs defeated the heftier charges at trial.

Seems like #Drake is really trying to leave his latest rap battle with something.

The Toronto native has filed an appeal to revive his defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group (#UMG), stemming from #KendrickLamar’s Grammy-winning diss record, Not Like Us. Originally dismissed by a judge earlier this month, the rapper’s team argues the court erred by treating the song’s allegations, including claims he is a “certified pedophile,’ as non-actionable opinion.

As reported, District Judge Jeannette Vargas said, “The fact that the Recording was made in the midst of a rap battle is essential to assessing its impact on a reasonable listener.” Judge Vargas added, “Even apparent statements of fact may assume the character of statements of opinion… when made in public debate, heated labor dispute, or other circumstances in which an audience may anticipate the use of epithets, fiery rhetoric or hyperbole.”

The appeal marks the next chapter in a contentious legal battle that began when Drake sued UMG in January 2025, alleging the label “approved, published and launched a campaign” around the song despite knowing it contained false and dangerous accusations against him.

Drake to Appeal “Not Like Us” Lawsuit Ruling

Drake is hoping to revive his lawsuit against Universal Music Group (UMG) that a federal judge threw out earlier this month. The musician and his legal team filed a notice of appeal today (October 29) in a New York federal court.

When reached by Pitchfork, a spokesperson for Drake said, “This confirms our intent to appeal, and we look forward to the Court of Appeals reviewing that filing in the coming weeks.” Representatives for Universal Music Group did not immediately respond to Pitchfork’s request for comment.

Drake filed his lawsuit against UMG in January, alleging that the music corporation “waged an unrelenting campaign” to promote “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar’s famous diss song that he believed to be defamatory. UMG had asked for the complaint’s dismissal, arguing that Drake “lost a rap battle that he provoked and in which he willingly participated.”

Judge Jeannette A. Vargas ostensibly agreed with UMG, ruling that “the broader context of a heated rap battle, with incendiary language and offensive accusations hurled by both participants, would not incline the reasonable listener to believe that ‘Not Like Us’ imparts verifiable facts.”

Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic sea-facing bungalow Mannat, located in Bandra (West), Mumbai, has received a green signal for its ongoing renovation. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has dismissed an appeal that challenged the approval granted to the project by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA).

The appeal was filed by activist Santosh Daundkar, who claimed that the CRZ clearance granted on January 3, 2024, was flawed. However, the NGT found no merit in the complaint and said the appeal was “without force.”

According to the tribunal, the renovation work falls under the CRZ-II zone, which allows construction on the landward side of existing structures. As per the approved plans, two new upper floors (7th and 8th) are being added to the structure, including a duplex apartment and an internal staircase. The updated building will now include two basements, a ground floor, and eight upper floors, reaching a height of 37.54 meters.

The property, located at CTS 859–862 in Bandra H-West, has had BMC approval since November 7, 2024. The tribunal also noted that the petitioner failed to prove any legal or procedural violations.

While renovation work continues, Gauri Khan recently shared that the redesigned home should be ready within a year. In the meantime, Shah Rukh Khan and his family are living in a rented duplex at Pali Hill, paying a reported Rs 24 lakh per month.

Mannat, originally built in 1914 and renamed by SRK in 2001, is not just a house—it’s a symbol of dreams. With a mix of heritage charm and modern luxury, it remains one of India’s most admired celebrity homes.

A Georgia judge has rejected Simon’s appeal to overturn their prenup, upholding the terms of their divorce finalized in June 2025. The ruling grants The #RHOA star $40,000 per month in spousal support for 14 months, half the equity in their home (with housing costs covered by Simon for the next 36 months), several luxury vehicles, and $224,000 in legal fees.

However, despite the ruling, Simon isn’t backing down. The #Nigerian businessman told PEOPLE:

“We intend to continue pursuing this appeal, as we have not yet exhausted all legal remedies. I anticipate a resolution within approximately 12–24 months, depending on how far the opposition chooses to take the matter.”

“In addition, I have a federal defamation case that has yet to be heard, and we are now preparing for the discovery phase at the pace set by the federal court,” he added. “I am a very patient man — patience has served me well for over 40 years in both my personal and professional life — and I am confident that I will ultimately prevail. Equity To Appeal Against Spotlight Ruling From High Court

UK actors union Equity will seek to appeal the High Court judgement that saw its claim against casting directory Spotlight thrown out last week.

General Secretary Paul Fleming said the Equity Council, which met yesterday, “has decided to seek an appeal of the judgment” with the help of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

This application to appeal will now be submitted to the UK Court of Appeal. Equity had 21 days after the ruling with which to appeal and the appeal has been backed by the TUC at its annual congress today.

The ruling of the much-publicized legal case dismissed Equity’s claim that Spotlight should be classed as an “employment agency” and should therefore only be able to charge fees that would “be no more than a reasonable estimate of the cost of production.” 

All claims were dismissed by the High Court last week, which found Spotlight “does not provide services for the purposes of finding persons employment with employers or of supplying employers with persons for employment by them.”

After the ruling, Spotlight CEO Matt Hood accused Equity of “misleading” its members about the case and described the case as a “cynical, performative and expensive legal proceeding.” When the appeal is resolved, it is understood that the costs for the case will be published by Equity.

Hood offered an olive branch to Equity last week to co-operate on the issue but Equity is instead going down the appeals route.

“It’s no surprise that the law has landed on the side of big business in this decision, with no regard for the many low-earning Equity members seeking to get by in an industry where the odds are too often stacked against them,” said Fleming. “This case simply sought the protection of regulation to limit fees to a ‘reasonable’ level through existing regulations, but the implications of the judgment are large and the idea that Spotlight can’t be regulated is dangerous and has consequences for the wider economy. Equally worrying are the sweeping implications for working people across the UK, who may now be left unprotected from up front charges by similar platforms elsewhere in the growing gig economy.”

Equity’s council met yesterday and voted to pursue the appeal and the union is also seeking a meeting with the government’s new employment rights minister.

Executive producer Rob LaDuca has wanted to bring back the much-loved “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” for years, and this summer, he finally got his wish.

After a 10-year hiatus, the show is back every Friday on Disney Jr. and Disney+ in its new incarnation as “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+.”

After working on shows like “Jake and the Never Land Pirates” and “Mickey and the Roadster Racers,” LaDuca, with a career spanning four decades, was wondering if it was time to retire. But then he got a call asking if he wanted to do more clubhouse, and LaDuca was back in business.

Here, LaDuca spoke about honoring Mickey’s legacy and why Walt Disney’s mouse is so beloved.

What was important in honoring the legacy of Mickey and friends?

We kept it to a very select world in the clubhouse of who Mickey surrounded himself with in the early cartoons. Donald, Daisy and Clarabelle Cow would make an appearance. Goofy was always there. It was the same group of friends.

Originally, they wanted to do the show in CG, but I was trying to convince them not to. There were certain things, like Mickey’s ears. In a 3D world, his ears look like satellite dishes on his head. So we had to figure out a computer program to slide his ears as he turned. There were a lot of challenges, but they turned out to be fun. Now we have the freedom to do textures, color and shadowing, and the world looks much more beautiful in this version of the show.

Another factor that stands out in the show is the songs. By the second verse, the lyrics have become earworms. What is the secret to that?

I’d have to ask our composer, Mike Himelstein, who did our music in the original show. He gladly came back, and we always worked well together. A lot of it came from what I loved to dance to. When I was a little kid, it was early rock and roll, or boogie-woogie.

Kids seem to have very little attention span, but the episodes run for 22 minutes. How are you considering that when you’re putting episodes together?

I thought with a 22-minute show for two-to five-year-olds, we definitely have to keep them focused. It was about being a little bit dramatic, and there’s a problem that we need your help to solve. It was mostly because Mickey was talking to the audience. We’re asking for help in an adventure, and it empowered the kids to be involved. The friends also have very distinct personalities. Mickey’s the good guy, and he’s everybody’s friend. Minnie is totally adorable, and Goofy is just a big goof. He’s slipping on things, and he says, “Whoops.” I think they enjoy all the personalities.

You mentioned animating Mickey’s ears. What other conversations are you having with the team about animating this world?

The characters are squashy and stretchy like they were in the old days. Advances in computer animation and rendering are huge. We can do so much more expression on the characters. Ludwig Von Drake was always a little stiff in the past, now, he is very animated and a lot of fun.

This time, we added a second level. There’s the laughing loft and the wacky tubes. Mickey, Minnie and Daisy can go up very easily. The wacky tube doesn’t really care for Donald and knows that Donald gets frustrated. So it’s fun to get him riled up, which I’ve noticed a lot of kids laughing at.

You’re also making 2-minute shorts on YouTube. What are the challenges of that storytelling medium?

You’re condensing this world into a two-minute video, which is how, sadly, a lot of older kids consume content. So, half of them are songs, and that’s easy, but the funny stuff is also happening within the song, and that keeps kids entertained. With others, we limit to a simple story, have a problem that Mickey helps with. Fun is the ultimate goal.

What would you say is the reason for this love? Why do people love Mickey Mouse and friends after all these years?

Everybody wants a good friend, and that’s what Mickey is. He’s sympathetic, helpful and always there for you when you need him. He’s just that kind of character. I think it’s just human nature that you want someone in your life to rely on and to, you know, who’s going to be dependable?

A federal judge has ordered that the Florida detention facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz” can no longer take new detainees or continue construction.

After environmental groups filed a lawsuit alleging violations of the National Environmental Policy Act, U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams issued a preliminary injunction Thursday (Aug. 21), citing significant environmental risks posed by the facility. These include additional paving, high-powered lighting, and frenetic human activity that did not exist before the detention center was built.

Following the ruling, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ administration filed an appeal with the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

The facility, which opened in July, was intended to house up to 3,000 detainees and expand immigration enforcement in Florida.
