IFFI 2025 | Anupam Kher declares ‘I am not going to accept any lifetime achievement awards for the next 20 years’

by jummy84 November 25, 2025
written by jummy84

From picking up an audience member’s call in the middle of his session, to going around the auditorium and asking people what they would call their biopic- Anupam Kher’s talk on ‘Giving Up Is Not A Choice’ at the 56th International Film Festival of India had something in store for each person present.

Anupam Kher (Rishabh Suri/ HT)

He shared personal anecdotes, all in sync with the topic. For example, in his very first film Saaransh, he was replaced even before he started shoot! “I had prepped for months, and asked Mahesh Bhatt ji ‘Why did you cast me?’ He replied ‘Bald hai na!’ because the character required and old man. After some time, I was told I have been replaced by Sanjeev Kumar. I got so angry… maine Mahesh Bhatt ko jaakar bola ‘aap duniya ke number one fraud ho. Main Brahmin hoon, main aapko shraap deta hoon!’ And I had packed my luggage onto a taxi, and stormed off downstairs after showing him the taxi, adding that I was going to leave Mumbai. Upar se Mahesh ji ne awaaz maari ‘vaapis aaja’ ! I did this because giving up was just not a choice for me.”

Years have passed by, and now Anupam is going to sign his 550th film in December, as revealed by him. “I have told all media to never address me as a veteran or thespian. That would mean ‘your career is over, now you are a veteran and should retire’, but why should anyone else decide when I should retire? This is why I have decided I will not accept any lifetime achievement award for the next 20 years,” he said.

Working with Robert de Niro

Further recalling the first time he got a chance to act alongside Robert de Niro, ‘God of acting’ for him, in Silver Linings Playbook (2012), he continued, “I remember on the first day, I went to Robert’s van, I wanted to meet him and present an idol of Lord Ganesh made of ruby. His assistant told me ‘Bob (Robert’s nickname) doesn’t meet anyone before the shot’, par main Hindustani tha, peeche padh gaya. He had to meet me. Then I was looking forward to when I would have a scene with him.”

And what happened next left everyone shocked on set. “During the scene, Robert said to the director David O. Russell ‘this guy has been the cause of my son getting drunk, he could have gone back to the mental asylum, I will throw this character out of the house’ His POV was right. What he did in the shot is, he got angry and threw me out of the room, locked the door. I was standing out in the cold, no one gave me even a sweater because de Niro had thrown me out (as part of the scene). I was there for 45 minutes.”

Anupam came back inside later to find the director saying ‘I think this is working’. “I decided mujhe kaam hi nahi karna Hollywood mein,” Anupam recalled further, “I asked for five minutes, and everyone was sitting there- Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow was drinking something. I said ‘there are eight characters in this scene, you didn’t ask for their interpretation’ There was pin drop silence. I further said ‘My character should tell Robert’s character that you brought up your son in this manner. I further said to David ‘you had this scene in your mind for years, are you throwing me out only because Mr de Niro told you?’ Aisa lag raha tha sab barbaad hai. Robert asked for another rehearsal and this time didn’t throw me out.”

Robert later agreed with Anupam’s take after inviting him to his van post the shoot. “Today I feel proud that I can call Mr Robert de Niro one of my friends. I did all that on the shoot day because giving up was not a choice,” he beamed.

Anupam Kher on 30 years of DDLJ: The film gave the world the coolest father during 90s

by jummy84 October 21, 2025
written by jummy84

Three decades since Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge first lit up the screens, yet the love for the film continues to grow with every generation. Looking back at the phenomenon, actor Anupam Kher, who played the warm and witty father to Shah Rukh Khan’s Raj, says he always knew the film was going to be extraordinary. “Yes, I knew from the beginning that DDLJ was a very special film,” he recalls. “It’s not about how many years it ran, but the fact that it changed the grammar and rhythm of Indian cinema. That’s what makes it a cult film.”

SRK and Anupam Kher

Reminiscing about the film’s premiere, Kher shares an unforgettable moment. “When the screening ended, there was complete silence for almost a minute, it felt like six hours. Everyone was just absorbing what they had witnessed. And then, the whole theatre erupted in applause. It was a standing ovation that just didn’t end. That’s when we knew this film had touched something deeper.”

The film, directed by Aditya Chopra, broke several cinematic conventions especially the idea of a rebellious hero defying parents. “It broke the myth,” says Kher. “Raj waits for the girl’s father’s permission instead of eloping with her. That was revolutionary for its time.”

Among the many memories from the film, one stands out for Anupam Kher, the iconic “Hum toh hindustan mein fail hue the… tune toh London mein fail hoke dikha diya!” scene between him and Shah Rukh Khan. “That scene was special. Shah Rukh is very good with improvisation, and we had a lot of fun experimenting. The entire shoot was full of warmth and camaraderie,” he says.

Anupam’s portrayal of a cool, supportive father became an instant favourite. “People still tell me, ‘I wish my father was like you in DDLJ,’” he laughs. “Before that, audiences had never seen such a father on screen; someone who was a friend, a motivator, and not just an authority figure. DDLJ gave 90s its coolest father figure.”

He further adds, how his bond with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, has not really changed over the years. “Our bond remains the same. Back then, there were no vanity vans, no mobile phones, no managers or security guards. We built relationships with our hearts, not our schedules. We knew each other’s strengths, weaknesses, and emotions. Those connections were real,” says Anupam Kher, adding: “I always say some relationships are like a pause button, you just press play and continue from where you left off.”

Despite having started with an iconic role in Saaransh at the age of 28, Kher feels his best work has come in recent years. “I’m doing some of my finest work now. Whether it’s smaller films or bigger ones, I’m enjoying every moment of it.”

Reflecting on how the industry has evolved, Kher notes, “Every era has its beauty. In those days, we had time to build personal relationships because there were no distractions. Today’s generation has other advantages — information, access, technology. We didn’t have Google or ChatGPT,” he laughs. “I’ve learned more from technology now than I ever did before.”

Amitabh Bachchan Trolls Pakistan, Mammootty, Anupam Kher & Others Cheer for India After Asia Cup Win

by jummy84 September 29, 2025
written by jummy84

India won its 9th Asia Cup in a thrilling final last night, defeating Pakistan in Dubai. However, after the match, India refused to accept the trophy or medals from ACC President and Pakistan’s PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi, citing tensions between the two countries, especially after the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year. Several Indian celebrities took to social media to celebrate India’s win and congratulate the team. Some also trolled the Pakistan team.

Actor Anil Kapoor wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “India Zindabad.” Superstar Mammootty shared a picture and expressed, “Team India didn’t just win the Asia Cup, they owned it. Champions without a single defeat. Absolutely magnificent!”

Anupam Kher added, “Bharat Mata ki jay! Kya baat hai (Wow)! What a game! Oh my God. Jeetenge bhai jeetenge. Bharat Mata ki jay (We will win. Hail India)! Vande Mataram. Khush ho gaya dil. Kya bolun main (I’m so happy. What do I say?). Superb. Proud of my country, proud of this cricket team. Fantastic, very well played. God bless them.”

Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan took this opportunity to troll former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. For some context, Akhtar recently made a slip of the tongue and referred to Indian cricketer Abhishek Sharma as Abhishek Bachchan. He said in an interview, “If Pakistan manage to get Abhishek Bachchan out in a hypothetical situation, what happens to India’s middle order?” before he was quickly corrected by the host. Reacting to this, Abhishek had tweeted, “Sir, with all due respect… don’t think they’ll even manage that! And I’m not even good at playing cricket.”

Big B referred to this while trolling the Pakistan team after their defeat. He wrote, “Jeet Gaye! Well played ‘Abhishek Bachchan’ Udhar zabaan ladkhadai, aur idhar bina batting, bowling fielding kiye, ladkhada diya dushman ko!! Bolti bandh! Jai Hind! Jai Bharat! Jai Maa Durga!! (We won! Well played ‘Abhishek Bachchan’. A slip of tongue there, and here a slip on the field, we shut down the opponent with our perfromance! Hail Maa Durga)

Several other celebrities, such as Sidharth Malhotra, Ali Fazal, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ranveer Singh, Angad Bedi, Preity Zinta, Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, among others, cheered for India. Take a look at their reactions:

The Ba***ds of Bollywood actor Raghav Juyal, who was in Dubai, told ANI, “Bohot acha laga aaj. Aur main apne bacchon ko bataunga ki main ye legendary match dekhne aaya tha. Bilkul kamaal ho gaya (It felt so good today. I will even tell my children that I came to watch this legendary match. Absolutely amazing).”
