Andy Muschietti on the Black Spot Scene

SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers from Season 1, Episode 7 of “It: Welcome to Derry,” now streaming on HBO Max.

If there was ever any speculation that the horrors explored in HBO’s “It: Welcome to Derry” were purely supernatural, Episode 7 put those questions to rest. After a flashback cold open that shows the origins of Pennywise the Clown (Bill Skarsgård), the episode picks up where the previous one left off, with a gun-wielding, mask-wearing mob of the eponymous town’s white citizens infiltrating the Black Spot: a hangout for the Black soldiers on Derry’s military base, and a hideout for the town’s falsely accused fugitive, Hank Grogan (Stephen Rider).

The white mob breaks into the Black Spot looking for Grogan, and a standoff ensues when the club’s patrons draw their own guns. The tension is briefly broken when the mob lowers their weapons and retreats, but the relief is temporary, as they lock the doors from the outside, throw Molotov cocktails into the building and riddle its walls with bullets.

The shoot-off continues as the Black Spot burns down with dozens of people inside — many of them central characters in the series, including most of the main ensemble of children. It is a raw and violent sequence, expanded upon from a brief chapter in Stephen King’s original “It” novel.

As it is in the novel, the scene showcases the grounded horrors taking place in Derry, but they are made even more eerie by the ghostly apparitions that soon crowd the massacre. Because Pennywise feeds on the town’s fear, he obviously shows up amid the terrifying event. Meanwhile, because the telekinetic Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk) is present in the fire, he witnesses hordes of spirits appear as ill-fated souls enter the afterlife all around him.

It’s a fusion of real and metaphorical terrors that come together in a harrowingly powerful scene that elevates “Welcome to Derry” to new heights. Variety caught up with the series’ executive producer and Episode 7 director Andy Muschietti over email to talk about his artistic and thematic approach to the show’s most impactful scene yet.

The massacre at the Black Spot is a small, but memorable part of Stephen King’s “It” novel. Did you always anticipate adapting and expanding upon it as a pivotal part of “Welcome to Derry”?

In the big ocean that is the book, the Black Spot seems small, but it’s actually a very substantial event in the interludes. Since we’re basing the show on the interludes, we really wanted to show the events of the Black Spot and use it as a guideline. Apart from a dramatic low point, it is a guideline that leads our characters towards a catastrophic conclusion, or, if not a conclusion, a big pivotal point in the story.

How did you decide on the suspenseful pacing of the scene, having the stand-off followed by brief relief before the horrors begin?

I wanted to do justice to the book in terms of the horror and the atrocities that are experienced. I wanted to not only create tension and suspense on the build up, but also when the whole thing goes off. We wanted to create the impression that we are locked inside with the rest of the people. That’s why the perspective doesn’t leave the room. There is a bit of a oner that basically follows several characters as the panic spreads with the fire. It’s a really tough scene to watch and was a very tough scene to shoot, but I really wanted to stay true to the intensity of that part of the book.

Courtesy of HBO

How much of the set design was practical and how much was digital? Of course, people weren’t actually getting burned, but did you use any real fire? Did you actually destroy the Black Spot set?

The burning of the Black Spot happened mainly on two big sets. One of them is the set of the Black Spot where we shot several scenes before. The second one is a more open place used for the part where chaos prevails and everything is on fire. I wanted to create confusion. I wanted to put the audience in the driver’s seat of that catastrophe and give the impression that you are lost and you don’t know where the door is.

That second part was shot in a place that didn’t have walls. For all the running, all the confusion, all the mayhem that you see, I wanted to create a place where you couldn’t recognize anything. It’s curious, because set No. 1 and set No. 2 are sort of fused in one of the shots. You can actually see it if you pay attention; you can see how we go from the set to a place that is engulfed in flames. There was practical fire, but we could not put actors in harm’s way, so a lot of it is not practical. Following the safety regulations, we used practical fire for stuff in the foreground and in the distance. The rest is made in post-production. Regarding the general performance, we had our actors perform as if they are struggling in these conditions, but also we had a bunch of background performers that were stunt-trained special performers.

How do you approach directing a kinetic scene like this, where there are lots of people reacting chaotically? Do you allow people to improvise, or are you choreographing every individual?

It was a challenging sequence to film, because you’re trying to convey chaos and panic and a lack of control. But of course, you had to choreograph every single second of it, and that’s what we did. The choreography took us probably two days of designing the whole sequence. The oner was a very challenging shot to achieve, because it basically starts with the first Molotov cocktail that sets the fire. Then people panic. They start running in all directions and the camera has to follow certain characters and then transition towards the action of other characters and then pan out to the ceiling, where it’s on fire before we fall back and someone takes us to another corner. It was an interesting challenge to execute. Everybody had to be on point. We had the camera department, the cast, special effects and stunt teams all working to make this incredibly complex scene. It’s very choreographed, but it had to look real and chaotic. I think the chaos was achieved. And I’m very proud of all of what we did there. Everything that needed to be choreographed was choreographed. Even in the background, people knew what they had to do.

Of course, there are moments of improvisation. Because it’s a scene with heightened emotion, people do things that were not planned. There were things that didn’t happen as expected, but then everything fell back in line. It’s a great thing about making movies: accidents happen. I don’t mean accidents like something bad happens, but something unexpected. There was a lot of that.

How long did the sequence take to film?

It took us like four or five days to shoot. It wasn’t easy.

What do you think audiences will take away from this scene within the broader series?

We shot this in a very visceral way. It’s a very first person experience. We wanted to get the audience to feel what being trapped in this place would be like. Dramatically, that was the intent. Thematically, we wanted to convey the idea that the worst things that happen in this world are often caused by us humans and that we are capable of inflicting pain and hate and horror in each other, just as much or more than the monster is.

The makers of The Devil Wears Prada 2 have finally unveiled the teaser of the upcoming film. Taking to its YouTube channel, 20th Century Studios shared the less than one-minute teaser.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 teaser: Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in a still from the film.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 teaser

The video began with Meryl Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, walking to her office lift as people were busy working. As the lift was about to close, Anne Hathaway’s character, Andrea ‘Andy’ Sachs, entered it smiling and saying, “Miranda.” Very unlike her character, Miranda moved sideways briefly to make room for Andy. She then replied, “Took you long enough.” The video ended with Andy smiling and wearing her sunglasses as the lift closed.

Fans can’t wait to watch Meryl, Anne after two decades

Anne also took to her Instagram page and shared the teaser. She wrote, “It’s everyone’s birthday. #43 #DWP2.” The teaser was unveiled on her 43rd birthday. Reacting to the teaser, a fan said, “So gorgeous! I am looking forward to watching this. It will be a great success!” “Oh my God! I’m so excited for the next year. Can’t wait to see Miranda and Andy together again,” read a comment.

“The fact that Miranda actually moves to the side to give Andy more room is some major character development,” a person wrote. A social media user said, “Now THIS is how you make a teaser trailer. The heels, the music, Miranda, and finally Andy. Chef’s kiss.” “Meryl really is a shapeshifter! To see her in Only murders in the Building, then back in this role! What a class actor!” said another fan.

What To Know

  • The cast and creators of It: Welcome to Derry break down key moments in the latest episode.
  • “Now You See It” features a major cameo, a flashback, and a trip to Pennywise’s lair.
  • Plus, the new Losers Club hatch a new plan to prove there’s something supernatural terrorizing the kids in town.

[Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3, “Now You See It.”]

There’s a familiar face that ushers us all into the twisty world of It: Welcome to Derry‘s latest episode. Andy Muschietti, cocreator of the series, cameos as a carnival pianist in a flashback to a 1908 town fair.

Muschietti told TV Insider that he did so at the request of the episode’s director, Andrew Bernstein — “He twisted my arm into playing that role, and I begrudgingly did it,” he joked. (He also teased that fans will see him again in Episode 8.)

Also present for the scene is a kid version of Francis Shaw, who takes in the oddities before exchanging his slingshot for a bottle of water from a young Rose. The two become fast friends and play in the woods together before things take a dark turn; he goes too far and comes face to face with a one-eyed demon and has to use the slingshot to take out the creature’s other eye and escape.

They’re soon parted when Francis’ father is stationed elsewhere, and she gives him the slingshot back as a token of remembrance — even though she knows he’ll forget her once he leaves Derry. It takes 50 years, but remember, he does, and the very grown-up Francis (James Remar) and Rose (Kimberly Guerrero) have a very warm reunion at her store.

He’s there to ask for her help with his mission after finding a car from the Bradley Gang massacre with the help of Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk), but he lies and says he wants her to help him avoid sacred lands in a military dig.

“That’s classified,” James Remar explained of Francis’ decision not to tell Rose the truth, even after their shared childhood experiences. “We’ve got to get it done, but it’s still a military secret. In my mind, it’s protective of her. I’m not going to say, ‘We’re looking for some entity, and we’re going to take over the world.’ It’s clandestine. It’s a military secret. And military secrets at that time, things that were highly classified, was just a matter of course. I mean, it was the Cold War, Strategic Air Command, Khrushchev, the Soviets. It wasn’t personal. I don’t feel like I was lying as such to my friend Rose.”

Thanks to that encounter, Rose convinces her fellow tribe members to take a wait-and-see approach about what Shaw and his team are doing, and they’re able to embark on a new mission — this time, with Leroy (Jovan Adepo) piloting a helicopter as Dick plays human compass with the slingshot providing him new insight into It. Dick goes into a trance and mentally visits Pennywise’s sewer lair, where his grandmother appears to tell him to leave, and It senses him as he almost jumps out of the back of the bird, with Leroy stopping him just in time.

HBO

Later, the two debrief after dinner with Charlotte (Taylour Paige), and Leroy says he knows Dick was there snooping around in his mind during the masked attack in his bunk. Dick says, based on what he saw, he wouldn’t ever want to cross Leroy again.

“I think when Dick looks into Leroy’s head, there’s a respect for what he has endured,” Chris Chalk told us about the scene. “But also there’s something nice about being seen, almost… Dick gets caught, and it’s like, ‘Oh, will you be my friend?’ It’s like, ‘I can tell you things now because, you know I can do things.’” Chalk added, “I think, for Dick, the first time, going, ‘Is this an ally? Is this person a person I might actually depend on?’ And then, as you watch the show, you find out if it happens or not, if they become allies or not.”

The other storyline of the episode is that of Lilly (Clara Stack), upon returning from Juniper Hill, committing to helping Ronnie (Amanda Christine) exonerate her father, Hank (Stephen Rider), whose alibi has now been contradicted. They decide that they need proof beyond Lilly’s account, so they work with Will (Blake Cameron James) and Rich (Arian S. Cartaya), after the latter says he knows of a ritual they can use in the graveyard.

Welcome to Derry Clara Stack, Arian S. Cartaya, Blake Cameron James, Amanda Christine

HBO

Though his prayer for the dead was bogus, they were still greeted by the ghosts of Teddy, Phil, and Suzie as the cemetery began to erupt in an earthquake, as the kids tried to get away on their bikes while taking photos of the spirits on the way out. Once they developed the film, they saw that they’d captured the specters perfectly — along with a clown.

“Allow yourself to fall in love again… This is your big moment.” Aura Ent. has debuted their official trailer for an indie romantic comedy film titled Under the Stars, the latest from filmmaker Michelle Danner after her other film The Italians last year. Out on VOD this month if anyone wants to visit Italy. “Sometimes the greatest love story will be your very own.” Under the Stars follows a novelist in a passionless relationship who decides to head to Italy. The twist is that Alex Pettyfer plays the lead character, and Andy Garcia is his Italian host, Giacomo. Once he arrives in Italy, he unexpectedly falls for a spirited local girl who challenges everything he knows about love. It looks like there’s also two love stores in here! Starring Toni Collette, Andy Garcia, Alex Pettyfer, Rob Estes, Jessica Serfaty, and Eva De Dominici. A very rustic charm.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Michelle Danner’s film Under the Stars, direct from YouTube:

“What happened, Washington? All those bullet holes in your jacket…” The religious movie distributor called Angel Studios has revealed their first look teaser trailer for Young Washington, a traditionalist look back at the origin story of “America’s first leader.” The story of America’s first president – George Washington. From filmmaker Jon Erwin (director of Jesus Revolution, I Can Only Imagine, House of David) comes a powerful new historical epic based on the true story that shaped a nation. Introducing William Franklyn-Miller as the young George and also starring Mary-Louise Parker as his mom Mary Washington, Kelsey Grammer as Lord Fairfax, Andy Serkis as Edward Braddock, Jonno Davies as James Mackay, and Ben Kingsley as Robert Dinwiddie. This film explores the courage, sacrifice, and destiny that forged a legendary leader – following George “fighting through intense battles in the French and Indian War and fending for himself in tense military meetings.” What will they leave out? Young Washington will open in theaters in July 2026 – just before Independence Day 2026, which will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Of course they’re releasing it then. This looks like an epic history lesson, similar to The Patriot from 2000, but it’ll also be exceptionally pro-America in a very cringe way. Have at it.

Here’s the first teaser trailer for Jon Erwin’s movie Young Washington, direct from Angel’s YouTube:

Young Washington Teaser Trailer

“Before he led a revolution, he survived one.” The origin story of America’s first leader… The film traces the early life of America’s first president and will debut in theaters nationwide during Independence Day Weekend 2026, honoring the nation’s 250th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “It captures the tension, courage, and humanity of a leader whose formative story has rarely been told on screen.” Young Washington is directed by faith-based filmmaker Jon Erwin, director of the films October Baby, Fully Alive, Woodlawn, I Can Only Imagine, I Still Believe, American Underdog, The Jesus Music, Jesus Revolution, and the “House of David” series previously. The screenplay is written by Jon Erwin, Tom Provost, Diederik van Hoogstraten. It’s produced by Adam Abel, Benton Crane, Chip Diggins, Jon Erwin, Kristopher Kimlin, Edmund Sampson, Tyler Zacharia. Angel Studios will debut Erwin’s Young Washington movie in theaters nationwide starting on July 3rd, 2026 next summer. Anyone want to actually watch it?

Travis Kelce on Heated Andy Reid Sideline Exchanges

13. Travis has three personal trainers—Alex Skacel, Andrew Spruill and Laurence Justin Ng—and, according to The Athletic, one usually travels with him wherever he goes to ensure he remains in football-catching shape all year round.

Alex, who’s also a physical therapist, recalled Travis wanting to go for a late night run after taking in a slate full of shows during Paris Fashion Week because he missed working out that day.

“It’s midnight, and we’re doing sprints over the bridges over the river,” the trainer told the New York Times in April. “No matter where he is, he finds time to get done whatever he needs to get done.”

14. Travis’ personal chef, Kumar Ferguson, has been a friend since the fourth grade in Cleveland Heights.

He was an amateur cook working as a truck driver in 2016 when Travis called him up and offered him the opportunity.

“He’s like, ‘Hey man, I want to take my diet seriously, and take it to the next level,'” Kumar told Vanity Fair in 2023. “I’m like, s–t, let’s do it. Three or four days later, I was in Kansas City.”

He’s been responsible for everything from stocking Travis’ fridge to delivering well-balanced lunches to the Chiefs’ training facility.

‘The Crown’ Producer Andy Harries, Jeff Pope Plan Caroline Aherne Film

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Caroline Aherne, the beloved British comedy star behind The Royle Family and The Mrs Merton Show, is to be the subject of a feature film.

Andy Harries, producer of The Crown and Left Bank Pictures‘ executive chairman, is collaborating with Oscar-nominated Philomena writer Jeff Pope on the project, which remains in its infancy.

Harries told Deadline that Pope has written a script that chronicles Aherne’s “peak creative years,” from her stand-up work in the early nineties to writing and starring in The Royle Family, the iconic comedy series about a TV-obsessed Manchester family.

Harries had front-row seats to Aherne’s talents, having executive-produced The Royle Family and Mrs Merton for the BBC. Pope also worked closely with Aherne on The Fattest Man in Britain, starring Timothy Spall, and comedy The Security Men.

Harries is on the hunt for a director for the picture, while a cast has yet to be attached. He said the script is “sad, funny, and very emotional.” As for the role of Aherne, “it’s a really challenging part for an actress in her early to mid-30s,” Harries added.

Craig Cash, the co-creator of The Royle Family, is involved as a consultant and executive producer. Cash is best known nowadays as the narrator of Gogglebox, a job he inherited from Aherne after she died from cancer in 2016. She was just 52.

Pope said: “I loved Caroline and I still think about her, or some funny line she came up with, almost every day. She was a true original, a working-class woman from Manchester who broke all the rules — every single one of them. I want more people to understand what a genius she was, and what drove her.”

Pope spoke movingly about her death in 2016, telling The Guardian that she “suffered appallingly” with depression, but that her interest in people was a hallmark of her writing. Aherne won four BAFTA Awards during her career, while her other work included appearing as a regular on sketch series The Fast Show.

Howard Stern’s Show Canceled at SiriusXM, Andy Cohen Takes Over Channel

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Howard Stern‘s run on SiriusXM has come to an end after 20 years.

Last month, amid a spate of rumors and speculation that Stern’s SiriusXM deal was not being renewed, Stern gleefully turned the chatter into a tune-in promo. His show told listeners he would address the topic on the Sept. 2 episode of “The Howard Stern Show”; however, last week, he postponed the reveal until Sept. 8 — indicating that a deal was not yet done.

On Monday morning, on Stern’s Channel 100 on SiriusXM, it wasn’t Stern who came on the air — it was Andy Cohen who introduced himself and said that the channel going forward will now be known as “Andy 100.”

“I know you’re expecting a big announcement from Howard, and this is not how things were meant to go,” Cohen said. “This was supposed to be a cleaner hand off — I’m kind of winging it,” he continued, saying that it has been a “surreal morning here.”

Added Cohen, “I can’t possibly fill his void” and said he was confident Stern would land on another platform soon.

Stern, who is 71, first signed with satellite radio broadcaster Sirius in 2004 (prior to its merger with XM), in part to be free of oversight by the FCC, which had levied millions of dollars in fines on terrestrial radio stations that carried his show for alleged indecency. “The Howard Stern Show” debuted on Sirius in January 2006. His most recent five-year renewal with SiriusXM was inked in 2020.

Last week, SiriusXM execs acknowledged that talks with Stern were ongoing but that they hoped to ink a new deal. “I think he’s been core to our platform for over 20 years, so I’m confident we’ll get to the right place,” SiriusXM CEO Jennifer Witz said Sept. 3 at an investment conference.

Stern’s original deal with Sirius was worth $500 million over five years including stock. His more recent renewals “topped out at roughly $80 million to $100 million,” according to Bloomberg. Regarding a Bloomberg report in 2020 that Stern was nearing a deal with SiriusXM worth $120 million annually, Stern said on his show at the time that he and his agent were “kind of baffled by it.”

Over the years, the notoriously ribald Stern has interviewed hundreds of actors, comedians, music artists, athletes, politicians and more on his show. At his side for most of his career have been co-host Robin Quivers, write Fred Norris and producer Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate.

Kristin Cabot's Ex-Husband: About Her Former Marriage & Andy Byron Rumors
Hollywood

About Andrew Cabot, Andy Byron Rumors – Hollywood Life

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Kristin Cabot, (whose maiden name is Stanek) the former chief people officer of Astronomer, was thrown into the spotlight in July 2025 after she was seen in a viral kiss cam moment at a Coldplay concert with her ex-boss, former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron. A concertgoer’s TikTok captured the Jumbotron shot of Andy embracing Kristin before realizing they were on camera. They immediately let go of each other and were visibly embarrassed. Social media blew up as a result when it was discovered that Andy was married. So, does Kristin have a husband, or is she single?

Below, we’re breaking down what happened at the Coldplay concert and more about Andy and Kristin.

Who Is Kristin Cabot?

Kristin worked as the “chief people officer” at Astronomer. She was hired at the end of 2024, according to her LinkedIn profile, which describes her as a “passionate people leader known for building award-winning cultures from the ground up for fast-growing startups and multi-national corporations.”

Elsewhere in her LinkedIn profile, Kristin wrote that she is “an influential leader and fearless change-agent” who leads “by example and [wins] trust with employees of all levels, from CEOs to managers to assistants.”

According to Newsweek, Andy once praised Kristin after she was hired to work at Astronomer. He credited her “exceptional leadership and deep expertise in talent management, employee engagement, and scaling people strategies” as being “critical” for the team.

Who Is Kristin Cabot’s Husband?

Kristin is married to husband Andrew Cabot, the CEO of Privateer Rum, according to the New York Post. The outlet reported that the Cabot’s bought a home with him just five months before the kiss cam debacle in July.

After the dust settled from the Coldplay concert, Andrew’s ex-wife, Julia, told the Daily Mail in September that she “texted Andrew right after it happened, and he said: ‘Her life has nothing to do with me,’ and said they were separating.”

Who Is Kristin Cabot’s Former Husband?

Kristin was previously married to her ex-husband, Kenneth Thornby. They separated in 2018 and finalized their divorce in 2022, according to the New York Post.

Who Is Andy Byron’s Wife?

Andy’s wife is Megan Kerrigan Byron. Andy reportedly shares children with Megan.

Is Andy Byron Still Married to His Wife?

Not much is known about Megan, except that the Astronomer CEO is still legally married to her.

Are Andy Byron & Kristin Cabot Having an Affair?

It’s unclear whether or not the affair rumors between Andy and Kristin are true. Neither Andy, Kristin nor Megan has publicly commented on the speculation.

However, the viral on-camera moment between Andy and Kristin ignited unwanted attention. After they were seen in a seemingly romantic embrace, then quickly separating, Coldplay’s Chris Martin made a cheeky joke that may have fueled the affair rumors.

“All right, come on, you’re OK,” Chris said to Kristin and Andy, according to Newsweek, before jokingly adding, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”

Astronomer broke its silence in an official LinkedIn statement on July 18, 2025, which read, “Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability. The Board of Directors has initiated a formal investigation into this matter and we will have additional details to share very shortly. … Andy Byron has not put out any statement, reports saying otherwise are all incorrect.”

Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend Andy Slye cheekily reacts to her engagement to Travis Kelce: ‘She wasn’t right for you’

Taylor Swift’s engagement to Travis Kelce has taken the internet by storm, with Swifties having nothing less than a meltdown over the revelation. The singer’s Instagram post that announced the news has garnered a whopping 34 million likes. Now Andy Syle, who has claimed to be one of the singer’s ex-boyfriends, has reacted to her engagement on X.

Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriend from high school has reacted to the news of her engagement.

What Taylor’s ex-boyfriend claimed

Posting a picture with Taylor from years ago, Andy wrote on his X account: “That feeling when your girlfriend from high school finally gets engaged. I used to tell myself: Andrew, it’ll be ok. She wasn’t right for you. I just hope her husband isn’t some handsome buff football player.”

He even added screenshots of songs of Taylor like ‘I Forgot That You Existed’, ‘This is why we can’t have Nice Things,’ ‘We are never ever getting back together,’ and ‘Andy, get over it,’ to say: “really should have seen this coming.”

He went on to add, “I wouldn’t have hit it off with my wife if it weren’t for Taylor. Taylor was a topic the first time we met. We bonded over the music. Now we film weddings as a husband/wife team. We love to film football weddings (like this ND one) Is anyone else thinking what I’m thinking?”

Will he be the wedding photographer?

That was not all, as Andy reacted to user comments on his post as well. When one fan asked whether he will be considering to be the wedding photographer for Taylor, he replied, “She might have a limited budget. We’ll see.”

Another asked, “Which song of hers was about you?” He said, “The one where she says “I love the gap between your teeth”.” “LOL have you guys spoken since?” asked a second user. Andy replied cheekily, “It’s mostly a one way conversation where I listen to her.”
