How to live a long and healthier life? Here are seven things highlighted by Americans aged 65 and older

What is the secret to longevity and a healthier life? The Pew Research Centre recently interviewed 2,582 Americans aged 65 and older to seek their advice on ageing. They underlined the importance of a nutritious diet, thoughtful financial decisions, and social activities for a balanced and long life.

Advice on ageing from Americans aged 65 and older

“Based on your own experiences, what advice would you give to younger people to help them prepare for getting older?” the Pew Research Centre asked the 2,582 Americans aged 65 and older whom they interviewed.

In a nutshell, the senior citizens emphasized seven themes: Health, finances, mindset/outlook on life, relationships, activities, work, and faith/religion.

Approximately half of older Americans (49 percent) gave health-related advice, such as maintaining a healthy diet, exercising frequently, and attending doctors’ appointments. Compared with elderly males, older women were more likely to give health advice (52 percent vs. 46 percent), per the study.

37 percent of the group stressed the importance of saving money and financial strategies. Approximately 25 percent of older Americans reported having a certain perspective on life, suggesting that younger people should live with thankfulness, enjoy life, and treasure every moment. This topic also included several general life lessons, such as staying loyal to oneself, being self-sufficient, and lending a hand to others.

Building a family and spending time with loved ones, as well as having good friends and a busy social life, were highlighted by 11 percent. And while 8 percent spoke about working hard, 7 percent offered advice related to religion. Another 8 percent said one should have hobbies, interests, and volunteer work.

Go for walks and eat healthy

Centenarians interviewed by CNBC highlighted the need for eating mostly plant-based diets of whole foods like fruits and vegetables. The importance of walking and exercising your body frequently for longevity was also noted by many healthy persons over 90.

“I try to walk every day, without excuse,” Malcom Idelson, 94, told CNBC in 2023. “I look forward to it. I’m often a little down and I say, ‘Let me get out and walk,’ and I feel so much better,” he added.

‘All in this together’: Robert De Niro calls on Americans to protest – National

Robert De Niro is encouraging people in the United States to join the “No Kings” protests against U.S. President Donald Trump, happening across America on Oct. 18.

In a video shared to Instagram, De Niro, 82, spoke about the “original ‘No Kings’ protest” that took place 250 years ago.

“Americans decided they didn’t want to live under the rule of King George III. They declared their independence and fought a bloody war for democracy,” De Niro said. “We’ve had two and a half centuries of democracy since then. Often challenging, sometimes messy, always essential. And we’ve fought in two World Wars to preserve it.”

“Now we have a would-be king who wants to take it away — King Donald the First. F— that,” the Oscar winner continued. “We’re rising up again, this time non-violently raising our voices to declare, ‘No Kings.’”

“I’m Robert De Niro asking you to stand up and be counted in the nationwide ‘No Kings’ protest on October 18th,” the actor said, concluding. “We’re all in this together — indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

The “No Kings” protests first took place this year in hundreds of American cities on June 14 during a military parade in Washington that marked the U.S. army’s 250th anniversary, which coincided with Trump’s birthday.

The protests were held to counter what organizers said were Trump’s plans to feed his ego on his 79th birthday (which was also Flag Day). The “No Kings” theme was orchestrated by the 50501 Movement — which stands for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement, and is made up of members of the American public who say they stand for democracy and against what they call the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration.

Protesters have called for Trump to be “dethroned,” as they compare his actions to that of a king and not a democratically elected president.

“They’ve defied our courts, deported Americans, disappeared people off the streets, attacked our civil rights, and slashed our services,” the group says on its website, referring to the Trump administration and its policies. “They’ve done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies.”

Stephen Colbert also called for people to join the protests on Tuesday’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

“In response to all this obvious abuse of authoritarian power by the administration, this weekend, ladies and gentlemen, there will be 2,500 rallies across the United States under the banner of the ‘No Kings’ protest,” Colbert said, before cutting to a clip of U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson referring to the protests as the “Hate America rally.”

“Hate America? It’s ‘No Kings.’ America does not like kings. There are only three good kings in America: Gayle (King), Stephen (King) and Burger (King),” he added.

The “No Kings” coalition responded to Johnson’s comments, referring to the protest as the “Hate America rally” and blaming it for “the ongoing government shutdown.”

“Speaker Johnson is running out of excuses for keeping the government shut down. Instead of reopening the government, preserving affordable healthcare, or lowering costs for working families, he’s attacking millions of Americans who are peacefully coming together to say that America belongs to its people, not to kings,” the group said, adding that they will “see everyone on October 18.”

bitchy | The Ryder Cup devolved into chaos as Americans made asses out of themselves

by jummy84 September 30, 2025

I’m not a golf person, and the only reason why I knew that the Ryder Cup was happening in recent days was because tennis people were talking about it! The Ryder Cup is the tournament where European pro-golfers are on the same team, facing off against a team of American pro-golfers. This year’s Ryder Cup was staged in America. Team Europe won, but they had one of the worst experiences of their lives because they had to deal with the most toxic American crowd in golf history. The Americans were especially nasty to Rory McIlroy and his wife Erica. Americans even threw a beer at Erica. Disgusting.

After a weekend of absolute bedlam at Bethpage, the dust is settling on an extraordinary Ryder Cup competition. The headline is that Europe pulled off a stunning victory on foreign soil, a win that was at times breathtaking and breathless, exhilarating and excruciating in equal measure. The American team was in danger of complete humiliation, but on Sunday the US golfers managed to recover and almost pulled off what would have been arguably the greatest comeback in sports.

There was so much to celebrate and yet, once all the champagne spray has dried, there is still a bitter taste in the mouth. Many of the European players were subjected to dreadful abuse from the galleries, unprintable vulgarities and some deeply personal insults. Rory McIlroy was the lightning rod for the invective, and so was his wife.

“I was out there for two days with Erica McIlroy, and the amount of abuse that she received was astonishing,” said Irishman Shane Lowry. “And the way she was out there supporting her husband and supporting her team was unbelievable.”

The situation around McIlroy’s group on Saturday afternoon became so intense that police officers with dogs were brought onto the course for protection.

“I wish they had let the dogs off the leashes,” quipped McIlroy, who admitted that he engaged with the fans on the occasions when it all became too much. A viral video from the 18th hole on Saturday morning shows McIlroy turning to the fans and telling them to “Shut the f**k up!” He then composed himself and dispatched his approach to within two feet of the pin. It was “very f**king satisfying,” he joked.

McIlroy made light of it in his team’s moment of glory, but he won’t gloss over the abuse that he and his wife were subjected to; a beer was even thrown at her in the Saturday four-balls.

“The police out there and the amount of security presence was insane,” he said. “Nothing was going to happen, there wasn’t going to be a physical altercation, but there was a lot of language that was unacceptable and abusive.”

McIlroy was at pains to state that it was only a minority of the fans who were out of line, but their behavior certainly left a mark on what was otherwise a wonderful sporting occasion.

“It should be off-limits,” he said, “But obviously it wasn’t this week. Erica is fine. She’s a very, very strong woman. You know, she handled everything this week with class and poise and dignity like she always has. I love her.”

Ryder Cups are known to be rowdy, and the home team counts on the support of their fans. Questions will now be asked about whether the host team played a role in fomenting the aggression. On the eve of the tournament, Collin Morikawa called for “chaos” and the event’s master of ceremonies, Heather McMahan, stepped down on Sunday after she had led the fans in a chant of “f**k you Rory” with a live microphone.

[From CNN]

Rightly or wrongly, I’ve always had the sense that the American golf community is overwhelmingly Republican. This Ryder Cup situation backs up that belief – this is the Trumpification of American culture in real time. The pettiness and nastiness, the coarsening of culture. Where Americans think it’s perfectly acceptable to throw a beer at a golfer’s wife and scream obscenities at European golfers. It’s not “heckling” and it’s not a matter of the Europeans needing a thicker skin. The American fans were absolutely in the wrong here.

Yelling at players like this is absolutely bush league.

Completely unacceptable behavior.

Throw out every idiot that’s doing this.

Apparently someone in the crowd threw a drink at Rory & his wife after the match today.

In the video Rory appears to be wiping her hat off & asking if she’s okay, then moves further away from the USA fans.

Another tough look for the fans today if true. pic.twitter.com/GphltmL6Zr

10 quick workouts for busy Americans: From planks to yoga

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Fitness is not just a trend but a necessity. Many people skip out on exercising daily. They often say they do not have time, juggling between work, family, and other responsibilities. But according to GQ report, a small workout session can be effective too. Whether you have a few minutes or an hour, there is a workout that can keep you healthy and energized.

Here are top 10 exercises for busy Americans.(Representative image/Unsplash)

Top 10 workouts for busy Americans

1. HIIT:

High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is perfect for busy schedules. Short bursts of hard work are followed by rest in this training method. Your body will keep burning calories for hours after you stop moving. Start with 20 seconds on and 10 seconds off for a few minutes.

2. Yoga:

Yoga is not just a stress buster. A fast flow of different poses like the downward dog and chaturanga can be a quick workout. In twenty minutes, you can ease stress, build strength and loosen sore muscles. It’s also a great way to prevent injuries before other workouts.

3. Pilates:

Pilates, especially on the reformer machine, is all about slow, controlled movement with resistance. Within seconds, your muscles will feel the challenge. Unlike heavy lifting, it’s gentle on the joints while still delivering an intense workout.

4. Weightlifting:

Lifting weights is not just for bodybuilders. Thirty minutes of focused strength training can improve bone health, boost mood and get your heart rate up. Moves like squats, overhead presses and kettlebell swings work the whole body.

5. Interval Running:

Interval running means mixing sprints with walking breaks. Ten 400-meter sprints and ten shorter ones with recovery in between can add up to several miles. You will be able to push your body hard without burning out.

6. Push ups:

Pushups are one of the most basic yet effective exercises you can perform because of the number of muscles that are required to perform them. Even a three-set of 10 reps can be effective and can help you stay fit, Healthline reported.

7. Long Run:

An hour-long run at a steady, conversational pace is a classic. It builds endurance, clears the mind and burns hundreds of calories. Relax your shoulders and loosen your fists to avoid injury.

8. Planks:

Planks are one of the most effective exercises for strengthening your core, Healthline reported. Holding a plank for just one minute helps engage not only your abdominal muscles but also your entire body. It stabilizes your core without putting unnecessary strain on your back.

9. Lunges:

Challenging your balance is an essential part of a well-rounded exercise routine. Lunges do just that, promoting functional movement while also increasing strength in your legs and glutes.

10. Squats:

Squats increase lower-body and core strength, as well as flexibility in your lower back and hips. Because they engage some of the largest muscles in the body, they also pack a major punch in terms of calories burned.

You do not need hours in a gym to be fit. Ten to 20 minutes is enough. What matters most is you show up, move with intention and make exercise a habit, even when life is too busy.

FAQs

Q1. Can a 10-minute workout really make a difference?

Yes. Short, high-intensity workouts like HIIT can boost metabolism, burn calories, and improve fitness if done consistently.

Q2. What’s the best workout if I only have 30 minutes?

Strength training or weightlifting is ideal. It works multiple muscles, builds strength, and even improves bone health in a short time.

Q3. Do I need equipment for these workouts?

Not always. Exercises like HIIT, yoga, running, or bodyweight moves require little to no equipment, while Pilates and weightlifting may need machines or weights.
