The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events (APPG) has confirmed Martin Rhodes, Labour MP for Glasgow North as its new Chair following its Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Wednesday 3rd December at Portcullis House, Westminster.

As well as representing Glasgow North, Martin Rhodes MP serves on several committees within the House of Commons including the Environmental Audit Committee, Absent Voting (Elections in Scotland and Wales) Bill and Space Industry (Indemnities) Bill. His appointment will strengthen the Group’s work to ensure the continued recognition and support of the UK’s events sector across Parliament and Westminster.

In addition, both James Asser, Labour MP for West Ham and Beckton and Douglas McAllister, Labour MP for West Dunbartonshire were both nominated and elected as Officers of the group. They will join Jack Rankin, Conservative MP for Windsor, in driving the direction and decisions of the APPG for Events alongside the group’s Chair.

A spokesperson for the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events said: “We are delighted to welcome Martin Rhodes MP as Chair and both James Asser MP and Douglas McAllister MP as Officers of the Group. All three bring a deep understanding of the importance of the events sector to the UK’s economy and communities, and their commitment will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen the industry’s voice in Parliament.

“We look forward to working with them to ensure that the events sector receives the recognition and support it deserves for its role in driving growth, encouraging innovation, and connecting people across the UK and beyond.”

Discussing his appointment, Martin Rhodes MP said: “I am honoured to have been elected Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events, and look forward to working with my fellow Officers, and my colleagues in Parliament, to continue to give a voice to our world leading events industry.

“Over the coming weeks, I will be working with the team from The Business of Events, to update our programme to ensure that going forward, we provide the level of engagement and support that this sector both needs and deserves.”

The EGM was chaired by Independent Chair Wera Hobhouse, Liberal Democrat MP for Bath. The election was triggered by the resignation of the previous Chair, Shaun Davies MP, following his appointment as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Secretary of State for Defence. Under parliamentary rules, Government members cannot chair an APPG.

PR & Communications agency Davies Tanner, through its The Business of Events Think Tank and Advocacy Network, manages the APPG for Events and acts as a Special Advisor to the group.

Election to take place for new Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events (APPG) has announced that an Extraordinary General Meeting will take place in Parliament on 22nd October 2025 to elect a new Chair of the APPG. The election follows the resignation of current Chair, Shaun Davies MP, as a result of him being appointed as Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Secretary of State for Defence. Parliamentary rules prevent a member of the Government from chairing an APPG.

Gill German MP, Member of Parliament for Clwyd North, has been nominated as Chair Elect of the APPG, with Martin Rhodes MP, Member of Parliament for Glasgow North, stepping into the role of Vice Chair.

As well as representing Clwyd North, Gill German serves as a member of the Welsh Affairs Select Committee, bringing valuable insight and experience to the APPG for Events. If elected, her appointment will strengthen the Group’s work to ensure the continued recognition and support of the UK’s events sector across Parliament and Westminster.

A spokesperson for the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events said: “We look forward to welcoming our Parliamentary Members to the Extraordinary General Meeting on 22nd October, and to electing a new Chair to ensure that the important work of the APPG continues and that we work in partnership with the events sector to strengthen the industry’s voice in Parliament and across Westminster.

In addition to 34 Parliamentary Members, the APPG also now has 10 Corporate Members, including beam, Raccoon Media Group, Togather, Event Hire Association, SEC, Association of Events Venues,, Experience Oxfordshire Venues, Meetings Industry Association, Manchester Central and Telford International Centre.

PR & Communications agency Davies Tanner, through its The Business of Events Think Tank and Advocacy Network, manages the APPG for Events and acts as a Special Advisor to the group.

Statement from Shaun Davies MP on stepping down as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events

by jummy84 September 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Statement from Shaun Davies MP
Yesterday, Wednesday 10th September 2025, I was appointed to the role of Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey.

While I am very excited to be taking my first role in Government, and supporting its work, this does unfortunately mean that due to strict rules regarding activities outside of Government, I can no longer hold officer roles in All-Party Parliamentary Groups, Therefore, and with much regret, I will be standing down as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Events with immediate effect.

I am very sorry to be leaving this role at such an important time, after just publishing our Plan of Work and Calendar of Activity, and at a time of some uncertainty, with recent changes at both the official and ministerial levels. But I know that with the assistance of our Secretariat, Davies Tanner and advice from The Business of Events, and with the continued support of our Parliamentary Members and Vice Chairs, and that of our Corporate Partners, that the APPG will continue to represent this important and world leading sector in Parliament with unrelenting enthusiasm and dedication.

I am proud that we were able to re-establish the APPG so quickly after last year’s General Election, and feel that, together, we have made great progress in helping to unlock the potential of this incredibly important industry, and it’s been a real pleasure to meet with so many people and organisations during the past year.

There is no doubt that the last year has been a learning experience for me personally, and I do hope that I have been a suitable voice and
representative for the events industry in Parliament. I will continue to champion the value of the sector both as an MP, and now within
Government, at every opportunity.

I will be working with Davies Tanner over the coming days as we begin the process of electing a new Chair, and I am sure they will provide further updates to you in due course.

Thank you again for your support during my period of being Chair of the APPG, and I wish every one of you continued success. My interest in and recognition of the industry, together with my own constituency links to it, endure and I will continue take a keen interest and remain a strong advocate and supporter.

Best wishes,
Shaun Davies MP
Member of Parliament for Telford
