Sabrina Carpenter To Star In ‘Alice in Wonderland’-Inspired Musical

by jummy84 November 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Sabrina Carpenter will return to her acting roots by starring and producing in an as-yet-untitled musical inspired by the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland. The project will be released by Universal Pictures and both directed and adapted for film by Lorene Scafaria.

Carpenter has never been the top-billed star of a major movie, but spent three-plus years acting in the Disney Channel series Boy Meets World as a teenager and has also appeared in smaller roles in such films as The Hute U Give, Emergency, Tall Girl parts one and two and The Short History of the Long Road.

In September, she signed on to appear in a Muppet Show special helmed by Seth Rogen, which will come out sometime next year on Disney+. Fresh from directing several episodes of and serving as an executive producer on the HBO series I Love L.A., Scafaria will next direct the A24 comedy Jonty, starring Jesse Plemons.

Alice in Wonderland has long proved its mettle as box-office source material, most recently with an eponymous 2010 Tim Burton-directed film that grossed more than $1 billion around the world. A sequel, Alice Through the Looking Glass, came out in 2016.

Carpenter is currently touring in support of her latest Island album, Man’s Best Friend, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in August and was just nominated for six top honors at the upcoming Grammy Awards.

Sabrina Carpenter To Star In ‘Alice In Wonderland’ Movie

by jummy84 November 12, 2025
written by jummy84

In September it was revealed that Disney Channel alum Sabrina Carpenter would be returning to her acting roots for Seth Rogen’s upcoming The Muppet Show revival. Today, she’s officially adding another acting project to her schedule, as she’s set to star in and co-produce an upcoming Alice In Wonderland movie musical.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the untitled film for Universal Pictures will be based on Lewis Carroll’s classic 1865 novel. Lorene Scafaria, best known for her 2019 strip club crime-comedy Hustlers, will write and direct the new Alice adaptation, while Wicked mastermind Marc Platt will also produce.

Sources told THR that the movie is a “passion project” for Carpenter, who reportedly approached Universal herself to pitch a new Alice In Wonderland adaptation before Scafaria was attached to the project. I wonder if the Mad Hatter will serve espresso instead of tea.

Meanwhile, Carpenter is also celebrating six new Grammy nominations: “Manchild” is up for Song Of The Year, Record Of The Year, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video, while Man’s Best Friend got nods for Album Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Wolf Alice Electrify with Cathartic Power in Oakland » PopMatters

by jummy84 October 29, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s a Friday night in uptown Oakland, and there’s a buzz in the air as British rockers Wolf Alice arrive at the Fox Theater on their much-anticipated fall tour. The band have won growing acclaim with each of their four albums, but there were four years between the release of 2021’s Blue Weekend and 2025’s The Clearing.

Thus, there’s been a long wait to see Wolf Alice back on tour. The group’s first major-label album since signing with Columbia Records last year is a polished, ambitious collection of songs that explores an array of sonic landscapes. There’s dream pop, power ballads, full-tilt alternative rock, and tunes that defy easy categorization as dynamic vocalist Ellie Rowsell and her cohorts explore their craft.

Sonic diversity is a Wolf Alice trademark, but there’s also a more seasoned approach on The Clearing. The group have been around the block a few times and are moving into their 30s, a time when one starts to ponder life’s existential questions more deeply. “I think a lot of it is like, maybe you think when you’re younger that you’re going to get older and understand yourself and everything around you a bit more,” Rowsell told Rolling Stone UK earlier this year. “Maybe getting older is understanding that you might never. You don’t always figure it out. You don’t figure yourself out because you’re always changing.”

Photo: Lisa Miller

Change can be a fine line in the rock world, where fans want the familiar sound they fell in love with. However, it’s the bands that can maintain their original vibe while also growing and experimenting with their art who tend to have the most enduring careers. Thus, Wolf Alice are poised to continue their ascent. Guitarist Joff Oddie has had to stay home, missing the fall tour while awaiting the birth of his first child. Reports indicate he hand-picked guitarist John Victor to fill in for him, along with keyboardist Ryan Malcolm.

The first few songs here at the Fox Theater showcase the band’s dream pop side, highlighted by the atmospheric vibe of “Delicious Things” from Blue Weekend. Rowsell wears what appears to be a sequined white leotard, white stockings, and white boots, making her look like a cross between an Olympic gymnast and a superheroine from The X-Men.

The set ignites on “Formidable Cool”, an electrifying hard rocker from 2017’s Visions of a Life. Bassist Theo Ellis and drummer Joel Amey lay down a wicked groove, and the guitars crank up the amps to send the group’s sound to a more powerful sonic landscape. The stylish Rowsell seems to embody the concept of formidable cool, with what feels like a shamanic presence, and it becomes evident that she is a first-tier rock goddess and a solid guitarist.

Amey takes the lead vocal on “White Horses”, a vibrant tune about personal identity from the new record, where Wolf Alice soar with a crisp upbeat sound that takes on a multi-dimensional flavor with Rowsell coming in for the choruses. It’s a standout track on the album that really comes alive onstage as the audience grows increasingly engaged. Wolf Alice’s sound clearly has more of an edge in the live setting, and it’s exhilarating to experience.

“Bros” from 2015’s My Love is Cool returns to the dream pop realm and is clearly a fan favorite, as Rowsell gets the adoring audience clapping in unison. “Your Loves Whore” is another song from that 2015 release that soars, a power pop gem where Rowsell’s voice shines. Wolf Alice mix it up when Amey and Malcolm come out front to join Rowsell for trio harmonies on “Safe From Heartbreak (if you never fall in love)”, winning simpatico cheers when they sing, “You fucked with my feelings.”

A showcase moment for Rowsell occurs on “The Sofa”, the dreamy closing track from The Clearing. At first listen, the song may seem like an oddly emotional number about chilling on one’s couch, but the song has deeper layers, both sonically and thematically, as Rowsell explores life’s conflicting emotions. She sings about having a wild side, but sometimes she just wants to lie there on the sofa all day long. A lot of people can probably relate, but only Ellie Rowsell turns this universal feeling into an existential power ballad, with the crowd waving their hands back and forth in sympathetic unison.

“Bread Butter Tea Sugar” follows as an upbeat number that blends a Beatlesque production vibe from the Sgt. Pepper’s era with 1970s pop rock, as Rowsell continues to shine with a giant star backdrop behind her. Wolf Alice crank the energy level to incendiary levels on the combo of “Yuk Foo” from Visions of a Life and “Play the Greatest Hits” from Blue Weekend. There are extra psychedelic lighting effects and wild, side-energy from Rowsell as she headbangs and swings her long hair around like a woman possessed. The energy is contagious, as the Fox is really rocking out now.

“Lipstick on the Glass” returns to a mid-tempo level, but there’s a shimmering vibe as Rowsell emotes in a mesmerizing way over a tight bass line, creating a song that feels like it could be from a neo-noir film soundtrack. “Giant Peach” is a rocker from the first album with a punk edge that revs things up again in sensational fashion. Ellie Rowsell can hang with the best in dream pop, but she transforms into a genuine force of nature on the harder-rocking songs with her mesmerizing presence.

“I’ll tell you one thing, thank god for the West Coast of America,” bassist Theo Ellis says sincerely, thanking everyone for coming out before the band launch into one of their most scintillating songs with “Smile” from Blue Weekend. It’s a Wolf Alice tour de force with the heavy groove, the tight riffs, and Rowsell’s syncopated freestyle type vocals as she sings of lost souls congregating at the bar to remember who they are, before a big chorus. Rowsell is also back on guitar here, rocking out like the rock star that she is.

“Bloom Baby Bloom” pairs well with “Smile”, the hard-rocking first single from the new album that feels larger than life as Rowsell belts out a powerful vocal over big hooks and a fierce beat, culminating in a climactic conclusion to the set.”When I’m playing this song, I’m just trying to channel that Muppet that plays the drums – you know, Animal. Yeah. Just on the floor tom for, like, three-and-a-half minutes. So maybe I’m trying to outgrow my nonanimal persona and into my animal persona,” drummer Joel Amey told NPR about his approach to “Bloom Baby Bloom”, which seems fitting for the song’s high energy level.

“A primal scream to remind yourself that you are brilliant as you are and not to let anyone let you forget that. Maybe when you feel in doubt of your own strength and power, like, it could serve as a kind of encouragement or something that you are amazing,” Rowsell added regarding her intention with the song, highlighting rock’s ever-compelling power to foster and encourage personal empowerment.

The encore of “The Last Man on Earth” starts as a contemplative ballad, before taking off with a shimmering sonic grandeur as Rowsell sings, “You’d like a light to shine on you, Let it shine on you,” seemingly channeling a bit of the vibe from the Rolling Stones‘ “Shine a Light”. It hits the feels like sonic honey for the soul, setting up the finale of the band’s hit power-pop song “Don’t Delete the Kisses”.

It’s been a sensational night at the Fox Theater, as Wolf Alice continue to build on their legend that began with taking their name from a short story of the same name by Angela Carter. It’s apparently a variant of “Little Red Riding Hood” from the perspective of a feral child, which perhaps provides some explanation for how fierce Ellie Rowsell can seem at times onstage. It’s been said that rock ‘n’ roll may not be able to change the world, but that it can get you through the night. Tonight’s performance has undoubtedly been one of those, as fans exit feeling blessed to bask in the uplifting power of Wolf Alice.

Sammy Hagar has been hosting his annual Birthday Bash over the past week at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas.

The Bash — a run of four shows in seven days — kicked off October 7th and wraps up with a final gig tonight on the Red Rocker’s birthday, October 13th. The concerts typically feature a large guest list of performers and rock royalty, and this year, Hagar brought out Alice in Chains guitarist-singer Jerry Cantrell, Belinda Carlisle, Anthrax’s Joey Belladonna, and more.

Cantrell’s appearances have been a highlight, with the grunge pioneer taking the stage with axeman Zach Throne for renditions of Alice classics (“Would,” “Rooster,” and “Man in the Box”) alongside Hagar’s rhythm section of drummer Kenny Aronoff and Van Halen bassist and longtime Hagar bandmate Michael Anthony.

On the third night, Cantrell changed things up, commanding lead vocals on a festive cover of Van Halen’s “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” before surrendering the mic to the Red Rocker himself for “Man in the Box.” Hagar forces a deeper growl than we usually hear from him, as heard in audience footage.

Other memorable guest appearances have included Belinda Carlisle performing The Go-Go’s “We Got the Beat” and her own hit “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” on Night 3, and various performances by Anthrax singer Joey Belladonna, including renditions of songs by Journey (“Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” with Deen Castronovo) and Van Halen (“Best of Both Worlds” in a duet with Hagar), according to Setlist.fm.

After October, Hagar will set his sights on his 2026 Las Vegas residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM, which spans 11 concerts throughout March and September. Get tickets here.

Squid Game And Alice In Borderland: The Uncanny Similarity Between Their Series Finales – What Does It Mean? | Glamsham.com

Netflix’s Squid Game and Alice in Borderland are frequently compared for having the same high-stakes survival ideas—but with both series having grown in the process, the Japanese series has appeared to leave the competition in the dust, particularly after the emotional end of its season three on September 25, 2025.

AIB, adapted from Haro Aso’s manga and helmed by Shinsuke Sato, launched in December 2020 on Netflix. It depicts Arisu, a jobless gamer who is thrown into a different Tokyo in which individuals must play deadly games. He becomes fast friends with fellow player Usagi, and both characters gradually develop, discovering purpose, love, and finally peace. Unlike Squid Game, Alice in Borderland is a manga adaptation, but its final season took creative liberties while still delivering a satisfying and hopeful ending.

Squid Game, the brainchild of Hwang Dong-hyuk, premiered in 2021 and took the world by storm. It is the story of Gi-hun, a financially strapped man who wins a deadly competition, but is left tormented by survivor’s guilt. Although Squid Game began as a scathing commentary on capitalism, fans say that its message lost intensity as time went on, particularly with Season 3, which concluded on a pessimistic note and previewed a U.S. spin-off rather than closure.

In both Squid Game and Alice in Borderland, a unique plot device is employed. The manga version of Alice in Borderland features a pregnant character, Usagi, and in the final game, her unborn baby becomes a contestant, aiding the players in achieving victory. Similarly, in the Korean show Squid Game, an unnamed baby takes her deceased mother’s place, influencing the storyline

Unsurprisingly, both series finished on scenes filmed in California—Squid Game launched a new iteration of the games with Cate Blanchett, while AIB suggested global upheaval and an enigmatic waitress called Alice, opening doors for future tales.

Fan reactions make the distinction even more evident. Alice in Borderland was lauded for providing closure and emotional resonance, while Squid Game was bashed for putting franchise potential ahead of story. As one fan described, “AIB healed a wound Squid Game left behind.”

How the ‘Alice’ Actress Died – Hollywood Life

Thanks to Polly Holliday, children in the 1970s and ’80s grew up hearing the iconic line, “Kiss my grits!” Nearly 50 years after making her mark in the film and television industry, Holliday died on September 9, 2025. She was 88. Dennis Aspland, Holliday’s theatrical agent and friend, confirmed her death to The New York Times. The late Alice and The Parent Trap star kept most of her personal life away from the spotlight. But as fans mourn her death, many want to know how she died.

Below, Hollywood Life remembers Holliday for her career, life and explaining how the beloved TV icon died.

Who Was Polly Holliday?

Holliday was an Alabama native who made her way to New York City and Hollywood after breaking onto the scene as a performer. The multi-talented stage, TV and film star knew her dream was to be an actor, having landed roles in her college’s theatre department before becoming a professional at Asolo Theatre Company in Sarasota, Florida, where she worked for about a decade.

“I started acting long before I knew what I was doing,” she once told Actors’ Equity. “At age 19 and a junior in college, I joined the cast of a summer outdoor theatre in North Carolina called Unto These Hills Outdoor Drama Center. I was a choir singer, a square dancer and understudied a lead role. … That job paid room and board and about $40 a week.”

Got to meet Polly at an AIDS benefit in the mid 90’s. Total sweetheart, in her finest Flo going out fit, including a miniature bedazzled cowboy hat in her hair. She was fabulous. I almost cried 🥹 I refrained from saying “Kiss my grits!”, but damn it was tempting 😂 pic.twitter.com/G2V4PjV1Dw

— The Wombat Tweets #TeamOrca #FreePalestine 🍉 (@SpunkyWombat) September 11, 2025

By the early 1970s, Holliday moved to the Big Apple and performed at the Public Theater and on Broadway. She got her big break in 1976 when she was cast as Flo Castleberry in Alice. Thanks to her iconic performance — and, of course, her “Kiss my grits!” catchphrase — Holliday steadily landed film roles in the movies All the President’s Men, Mrs. Doubtfire, 1998’s The Parent Trap and 1984’s Gremlins.

Was Polly Holliday’s Cause of Death Disclosed?

No, but it’s reportedly thought that Holliday died after a bout of pneumonia, per People. An official cause of death has not been revealed by the time of publication.

Polly Holliday’s Health Before She Died

Holliday never revealed any major health issues throughout her life. After retiring from film, she maintained a private life. However, according to People, the late actress was suffering from pneumonia in her final days.

Was Polly Holliday Married? Find Out if She Had a Husband

No, Holliday never married.

Did Polly Holliday Have Children?

No, Holliday never had children. She stayed focused on her career, telling People in 1980, “My work is my life.”

“Kiss My Grits” Waitress Flo on ‘Alice’ Was 88

by jummy84 September 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Polly Holliday, the Alabama-born actress who told folks to “Kiss my grits!” as the spirited waitress Flo on the CBS sitcom Alice and her own spinoff, has died. She was 88.

Holliday died Tuesday at her home in Manhattan, Dennis Aspland, her theatrical agent and friend, told The New York Times.

In 1990, Holliday received a Tony nomination for playing Big Mama in a revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Four years earlier, she starred opposite Jean Stapleton on Broadway in another revival of a classic, Arsenic and Old Lace.

On the big screen, Holliday played Ruby Deagle, the wealthy and wicked widow who meets her swift end after a ride on a tampered stair-lift chair in Joe Dante’s Gremlins (1984).

She also appeared in John G. Avildsen’s W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings (1975), Paul Mazursky‘s Moon Over Parador (1988), Chris Columbus’ Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Mr. Wrong (1996) — as Ellen DeGeneres’ mom — Nancy Meyers’ The Parent Trap (1998) and the Farrelly brothers’ remake of The Heartbreak Kid (2007).

Sporting a bouffant red wig, Holliday shot to national prominence on Alice in a version of the character originated by Diane Ladd in the 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, directed by Martin Scorsese.

Both the series, which debuted in August 1976 and starred Linda Lavin, and the movie were set on the outskirts of Phoenix at the grubby Mel’s Diner. (Robert Getchell wrote the screenplay and created the show as well.)

Holliday appeared as Florence Jean Castleberry for four seasons of Alice, but amid reported tension with Lavin, she left in the 1979-80 season finale, with her character quitting Mel’s to take a hostess job as a fancy restaurant in Houston. (Ladd ostensibly replaced her as another waitress named Belle Dupree.)

“People assumed that because Flo was very big that Linda must have had her nose out of joint,” Holliday said in a 1980 interview with People magazine. “Well, Linda’s a bigger person than that.”

When her Flo spinoff came on the air in March 1980, Ms. Castleberry was now the owner of a roadhouse in Cowtown, Texas; it turned out she had bought the place in Fort Worth on a whim on her way to Houston. However, the comedy was canceled after two seasons while Alice ran through 1985. (Holliday never returned as Flo except in a flashback episode.)

For playing Flo, Holliday won Golden Globes in 1979 and 1980 and received four Emmy nominations, including two in ’80 for Alice and her own show.

Holliday was born on July 2, 1937, in Jasper, Alabama. Her mother, Velma, was a housewife and her father, Ernest, a trucker whom she rode with during summer vacations.

“We’d eat at truck stops, and there would always be a waitress like Flo with a joke ready,” she told People magazine in 1980. “The men would say all kinds of risqué things to her, but it was understood that it wasn’t serious, just a way to make everybody’s day happier.”

After graduating from Alabama College for Women near Birmingham and a year at Florida State, Holliday taught the piano before turning to acting in the 1960s, spending seven or so seasons with the Asolo Theatre Company in Sarasota, Florida.

In 1972, she appeared opposite Ruby Dee in a New York Shakespeare Festival production of Alice Childress’ Wedding Band, a World War I period piece set in South Carolina.

Two years later, Holliday made her Broadway debut in the comedy All Over Town, directed by Dustin Hoffman, and he helped her land a part as a secretary to Ned Beatty‘s character in All the President’s Men (1976).

It was Alan Shayne, the casting director on that movie and later president of Warner Bros. Television, who suggested she audition for Alice.

“I think I brought a complete knowledge of that type of woman to that role,” Holliday said in 2003. “She was a Southern woman you see in a lot of places — not well-educated but very sharp, with a sense of humor and a resolve not to let life get her down.”

Shayne also approved the idea of the spinoff for Holliday.

“We really had hoped Flo would be a big success and believe me, we did everything,” he recalled in a 2012 interview. “We changed writers, changed producers, nothing seemed to work, but God knows we tried. … The public kind of wanted her there saying, ‘Kiss my grits’ in the diner, and she became really a different character when she had her own show. She wanted to be different.”

Later, Holliday recurred on other shows including Private Benjamin, Home Improvement and The Client and guest-starred on The Golden Girls (as Rose’s blind sister, Lily), The Equalizer and Homicide: Life on the Street.

She leaves no immediate survivors.

Regarding “Kiss my grits,” she called her catchphrase “pure Hollywood” in a 2003 interview. “When the writers gave it to me, I said, ‘What is this supposed to mean? Why am I saying that?’”

When fans asked her to repeat it, “I usually just smile and say, ‘Oh, I’m sure you could do it better.’”
