‘Savageland’ Should Be Mandatory Viewing for I.C.E. Agents

by jummy84 November 8, 2025

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark honors fringe cinema in the streaming age with midnight movies from any moment in film history.

First, the BAIT: a weird genre pick, and why we’re exploring its specific niche right now. Then, the BITE: a spoiler-filled answer to the all-important question, “Is this old cult film actually worth recommending?”

The Bait: Welcome to “Savageland,” Population You!

I.C.E. agents are horror fans too, right? It seems like you’d have to be to voluntarily risk your reputation for a hobby most famously associated with slasher villains. Sure, there are the red-blooded Americans who say they joined up to salute a bigoted version of Superman that never existed. But when I want to talk to Dean Cain, I prefer walking directions to the most publicly pathetic man in Las Vegas.

No, this midnight movie recommendation is for you, the true-blue horror movie lover who is spending this Friday night gainfully employed by the world’s foremost dipshit militia. Are you doing it because you like scaring people? I know a bunch of guys who get it. Jigsaw torments blind guys, too. Art the Clown likes brutalizing women. And though Pennywise doesn’t typically choose which kids to traumatize based on color, I’m sure he’d like to start. It’s nice to see yourself on screen, isn’t it? Good boy! Here’s a treat.

Directed by Phil Guidry, Simon Herbert, and David Whelan, “Savageland” is about your favorite thing: undocumented immigrants. Set along the U.S.-Mexico border, this genius found footage flick from 2015 centers on a mysterious massacre, supposedly carried out by a single man. Francisco Salazar (Noé Montes) is a shy photographer who crossed into Arizona years before the attack. On June 2, 2011, he was found fleeing the scene of a bizarre mass casualty event: 57 people, an entire village of immigrants and one notable white family, slaughtered in a single night. How can that be? The answer probably lies in the strange bite marks covering the corpses… and Salazar, too. But that fact won’t make it into court.

Noé Montes in ‘Savageland’ (2015)TUBI

Convicting the killer is of paramount importance to Sheriff John Parano (George Lionel Savage) and the staunchly anti-immigrant base that voted him into office for the last four decades. But to him, this case is open and shut. Salazar — the bloodthirsty murderer from Mexico! — did this, plain and simple. Parano is supported by a Rush Limbaugh-type (Edward L. Green) and the subtle bias of Salazar’s own defense attorney (Jason Stewart), who insists his client got a fair trial despite more evidence, photographs Salazar took that night, showing a swarm of monsters and victims, being thrown out by a crooked judge.

Framed as a broadcast true crime documentary made after Salazar’s trial, this brilliant lo-fi effort enlists several more talking heads to balance out the whodunnit. A civil rights expert (Lawrence Ross) compares the carnage to a slew of historic events implicating a racist government, such as the Tulsa massacre. There’s also a psychologist (Renee Davies) who finally gets the stoic defendant to talk in a clinical interview.

George Lionel Savage in “Savageland” (2015)TUBI

She believes Salazar when he says a mob of monsters attacked his community and the family he worked for — but she has trouble explaining why her patient would’ve been taking snapshots of the mutants instead of fighting them off. Enter the late Len Wein, a real comic book legend who plays a critical part in “Savageland” and represents the single most intriguing element of the film when revisited in 2025.

Listen, I know you’re a big-time genre buff, and I’m just a girl “journalist” (lulz!), but I think you’ll like what comes next. Crafted in the spirit of George A. Romero, this extraordinary testament to independent filmmaking dares to ask what would happen if Duane Jones (yeah, the Black guy) didn’t get shot by police in “Night of the Living Dead,” but instead lived to endure the white mob’s torment in the light of day.

Look. Illinois may have denied Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem access to a bathroom during her latest visit — but I earnestly want you to enjoy this movie. Seriously. Kick back and relax! We’re all in “Savageland” now, and if you take your mask off long enough, horror might just save your soul.

“Savageland” is now streaming for free on Tubi.

The Bite: What Happens If AI Starts Covering for These Zombies?

There’s too much happening right now to seriously fret about AI ruining the believability of found footage movies. But amid a sea of smart choices, the decision to have Salazar photograph his attackers on film sticks out a decade later. In “Savageland,” the late Len Wein — a real-life artistic superhero who created Marvel’s Wolverine, among many other triumphs — appears as photojournalist Len Matheson. He recalls hanging from a helicopter despite a fear of heights to capture vital scenes from the Vietnam War.

Matheson’s testimonial in the faux documentary provides essential context for Salazar’s ultimately fruitless legal defense, explaining how looking through a camera lens can make someone feel invincible even in the face of certain peril. Now more than ever, capturing the truth is important, and journalism is a valuable vocation, one of a small handful explicitly named in the Constitution. Without a weapon, Salazar faced the terror that had befallen his town by documenting what he could and sharing that harsh reality with the world — regardless of the consequences. The suggestion that the photos are doctored makes sense in a post-fact America, which was emerging even when this movie originally premiered before the first Trump term.

Len Wein in ‘Savageland’ (2015)TUBI

Since then, faith in politicians has declined precipitously, while the rise of AI has made the public’s perception ever easier to manipulate. The government officials in “Savageland” are obviously corrupt, but true cinephiles can take some small comfort in Matheson explaining why film photos would be harder to fake than digital images. Still, you’d be hard-pressed to find any No Kings protesters lugging around a Pentax17. Despite the growing similarities between modern news and Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another,” no one is watching CNN in VistaVision. Toss in the possibility that it might actually behoove killer AI to let a zombie attack wipe out humanity, and the point stands even stronger. (When your enemy is made of metal, isn’t all warfare biological?)

Lawrence Ross in ‘Savageland’ (2015)TUBI

“Savageland” further bolsters its credibility by casting real experts to play fake ones in the film. Wein was indeed a Vietnam veteran, and Lawrence Ross is a real journalist and historian who has seen a number of well-respected texts and novels about social injustice published under his name. In fact, this entire project is underpinned by the UCLA academic filmmaking scene — and the man who played Salazar, Noé Montes, continues to champion communities close to the border with his work as a visual artist.

Per his professional website, “For more than 20 years, Montes has documented and worked with underrepresented communities to effect change through storytelling, education, and advocacy around social, economic, and environmental issues.” Now through April 19, 2026, you can see “Regional History” — an exhibition of three collections from Montes — on display at the Riverside Art Museum in the Bobbie Powell and R. Ross DeVean Galleries.

Diddy Ordered To Hand Over Infamous Freak-Off Tapes, Cash & Devices To Federal Agents Following Prost*tution Sentencing

Diddy’s wild past has officially come back to haunt him.

According to AllHipHop, the hip-hop mogul has been ordered to surrender a trove of “freak-off” tapes, cash, and digital devices to federal agents as part of his sentence in a prost*tution case that damaged his decades-long career in music and entertainment.

According to court documents filed Wednesday, the confiscated materials include hard drives, iPads, iPhones, and computers—along with $9,000 in cash seized from Diddy’s Manhattan hotel suite.

Among the most notable items are the infamous “Ibiza Tapes,” filmed on a Sony DVCAM in 1996 and allegedly capturing dr*g-fueled s*x parties Diddy hosted with male escorts.

Prosecutors said the recordings were “property used or intended to be used” in connection with the prost*tution charges that led to his conviction.

Diddy was sentenced to roughly four years in prison and is appealing the verdict to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

What are your thoughts in the feds seizing these tapes?

ICE agents to attend Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime show, Trump adviser says – National

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will be present at the 2026 Super Bowl and Grammy-winning rapper Bad Bunny’s halftime show, longtime Trump adviser Corey Lewandowski warned.

Lewandowski, who serves as an adviser to the Department of Homeland Security as a special government employee, confirmed the news days after it was announced that Bad Bunny would be the halftime show performer.

During an appearance on The Benny Show on Wednesday, Lewandowski was asked by podcast host Benny Johnson if “ICE will have enforcement at the Super Bowl for the Bad Bunny halftime show.”

“There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else. We will find you. We will apprehend you. We will put you in a detention facility and we will deport you,” Lewandowski said.

“So know that is a very real situation under this administration, which is contrary to how it used to be.”

CONFIRMED: ICE will be active and on-site at Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance.

Lewandowski went on to criticize the NFL for selecting Bad Bunny as the halftime show performer.

“It’s so shameful they’ve decided to pick somebody who seems to hate America so much to represent them at the halftime show,” Lewandowski said about the three-time Grammy Award-winning performer.

He told Johnson that the NFL should “be trying to be inclusive, not exclusive.”

“There are plenty of great bands and entertainment people who could be playing at that show that would be bringing people together and not separating them,” Lewandowski said.

“If there are illegal aliens, I don’t care if it’s a concert for Johnny Smith or Bad Bunny or anybody else, we’re going to do enforcement everywhere. We are going to make Americans safe. That is a directive from the president.

“If you’re in this country illegally, do yourself a favour, go home. We’ll buy you the plane ticket. Get out of the country and you’ll have a chance to come back legally,” he added.

The NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation announced Sunday that Bad Bunny will lead the halftime festivities from Levi’s Stadium on Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, Calif.

The Puerto Rican superstar’s selection comes amid another career-defining run: He’s fresh off a historic Puerto Rico residency this month that drew more than half a million fans and is leading all nominees at the Latin Grammys in November. He has become one of the world’s most streamed artists with albums such as Un Verano Sin Ti, a Spanish-language LP.

In an interview with I-D last month, Bad Bunny explained that part of the reason he did his Puerto Rico residency and won’t tour in the U.S. this year was because “f—ing ICE could be outside (my concert). And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”

“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate — I’ve performed there many times,” he added.

“All of (the shows) have been successful. All of them have been magnificent. I’ve enjoyed connecting with Latinos who have been living in the U.S. But specifically, for a residency here in Puerto Rico, when we are an unincorporated territory of the U.S. … people from the U.S. could come here to see the show.”

Trump Advisor Says ICE Agents Will Be at Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Show

by jummy84 October 2, 2025
written by jummy84

As Bad Bunny is poised to make history as the first Super Bowl halftime artist to perform solely in Spanish, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski warned that ICE agents will be present at the national event.

During an interview for Benny Johnson’s series “The Benny Show,” the host asked Lewandowski if “ICE will have enforcement at the Super Bowl for the Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime.” Lewandowski replied, “There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else.”

“We will find you, we will apprehend you, we will put you in a detention facility, and we will deport you,” he continued. “So know that is a very real situation under this administration, which is completely contrary to how it used to be.”

Lewandowski called the decision to choose Bunny as the halftime performer “shameful” and accused him of seeming to “hate America,” before pointing to other “great bands and entertainment people who could be playing at that show” instead.

“If there are illegal aliens, I don’t care if it’s a concert for Johnny Smith or Bad Bunny or anybody else, we’re going to do enforcement everywhere because we are going to make Americans safe,” said Lewandowski. “That is a directive from the president. If you’re in this country illegally, do yourself a favor: Go home.”

Bunny has established himself as one of the most mainstream and popular artists both in the country and globally. The Grammy winner was the most streamed artist on Spotify for three years from 2020 to 2022, has the most-streamed album in the history of Spotify (Un Verano Sin Ti), and saw multiple tracks from his latest album, DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS, reach Number One this year on the Billboard Hot 100, Apple Music, and Spotify. And on Sunday DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS became the first album of 2025 to surpass 7 billion streams on Spotify.

Prior to his announcement as the performer of the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show, Bunny explained why he left the continental United States off his upcoming Debí Tirar Más Fotos world tour, saying the decision was tied to the Trump administration’s recent mass deportations targeting Latinos.

“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate — I’ve performed there many times,” Bunny said. “All of [the shows] have been successful. All of them have been magnificent.”

Trending Stories

The singer continued, “But there was the issue of — like, fucking ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”

Unsurprisingly, the announcement that Bunny, a vocal critic of President Trump’s political agenda, will play the Super Bowl ignited outrage from the MAGA base. However, whether conservatives agree or not, Bunny continues to be one the most popular artists in the world and his performance on the nation’s biggest stage will no doubt further cement his record-breaking legacy.

AI Actress Tilly Norwood Attracts Interest From Talent Agents

by jummy84 September 28, 2025
written by jummy84

AI actress Tilly Norwood has attracted the attention of multiple talent agents, actor, comedian and producer Eline Van der Velden told a panel at the Zurich Summit, the industry strand of the Zurich Film Festival.

Tilly Norwood is the first creation to emerge from recently launched AI talent studio Xicoia, a spin-off from Van der Velden’s AI production studio Particle6.

Van der Velden said that studios were quietly moving forward with AI projects, and that further announcements would come in the next few months.

“We were in a lot of boardrooms around February time, and everyone was like, ‘No, this is nothing. It’s not going to happen.’ Then, by May, people were like, ‘We need to do something with you guys,’” said Van der Velden, who was being interviewed on stage Saturday by Diana Lodderhose of Deadline.

“When we first launched Tilly, people were like, ‘What’s that?,’ and now we’re going to be announcing which agency is going to be representing her in the next few months.”

In July, Norwood revealed on her Facebook page that she had appeared in her first role, a comedy sketch “AI Commissioner,” which can be found below.

Norwood wrote, “Can’t believe it… my first ever role is live! I star in ‘AI Commissioner,’ a new comedy sketch that playfully explores the future of TV development produced by the brilliant team at Particle6 Productions.”

She added, “I may be AI generated, but I’m feeling very real emotions right now. I am so excited for what’s coming next!”

“We want Tilly to be the next Scarlett Johansson or Natalie Portman, that’s the aim of what we’re doing,” van der Velden told Broadcast International.

“People are realizing that their creativity doesn’t need to be boxed in by a budget – there are no constraints creatively and that’s why AI can really be a positive,” Van der Velden continued. “It’s just about changing peoples’ viewpoint.”

Particle6 has produced content across multiple genres, from “Miss Holland” for BBC Three to “True Crime Secrets” for Hearst Networks, and “Look See Wow!” for Sky Kids.

Talent Agents Circle AI Actress Tilly Norwood

by jummy84 September 27, 2025
written by jummy84

Actor, comedian technologist Eline Van der Velden has revealed that her recently launched AI talent studio Xicoia is in talks with a number of talent agents interested in signing its first creation, AI actress Tilly Norward.

Van der Velden talked about the development on a panel at the Zurich Summit on Saturday, where she gave a presentation on her AI production studio Particle6 and then joined a discussion on AI developments in the entertainment industry alongside Verena Puhm, head of Luma AI’s new Studio Dream Lab LA.

Both Van der Velden and Puhm suggested that studios and other media and entertainment companies were quietly embracing AI under the radar, and to expect public announcements about high-profile projects using the technology in the coming months.

“We were in a lot of boardrooms around February time, and everyone was like, ‘No, this is nothing. It’s not going to happen’. Then, by May, people were like, ‘We need to do something with you guys.’ When we first launched Tilly, people were like, ‘What’s that?’, and now we’re going to be announcing which agency is going to be representing her in the next few months,” said Van der Velden.

The revelation of a possible agent signing for Tilly Norward comes just days after Van der Velden officially announced the creation of Particle6 offshoot Xicoia, an AI talent studio designed to create, manage and monetize a new generation of hyperreal digital stars.

If the talent agency signing comes to pass, Norwood will be one of the first AI generated actresses to get representation with a talent agency, traditionally working with real-life stars.

Former AI artist Puhm, whose appointment as head of startup Luma AI’s new Studio Dream Lab LA was announced in July, concurred with Van der Velden on the mood changing at the studios.

“I remember having meetings with the studios as an AI artist before joining Luma. Some said, ‘Oh, no, we’re not using AI.’ I knew some were lying, they were already secretly working on some stuff, but some were not open to it at all. Then definitely this year, kind of like March, April, people called me and wanted to talk to me,” she said.

“They were discussing me being a liaison between directors and the AI artists… at that time I was traveling around a lot and educating about workflows and pipelines and how it can be integrated, and then all a sudden that was becoming very interesting to them. It was a different language to them and they were like, ‘We really have to get people from the outside that have worked in the AI industry’.

“Historically, the studios have been very slow to adapt, at least publicly, they need that influx of new creatives, and new creative technologists to come in and actually show them how it’s done. You can assume that a lot of them are already working on it.”

Puhm said all the big companies and studios were working on AI assisted projects but being under NDA, she was not in a position to announce any of the details.

“We really want to make them feel comfortable through their testing, through their projects, and working on real projects… we want it to be their decision on when they want to say it out loud, but honestly, I think this year is going to be interesting. In the beginning of next year, there’s going to be a lot of announcements.”
