Winter skincare alert: 8 morning habits that may be drying out your skin and causing premature ageing

Winter brings a welcome chill. But for your skin, it can be a season of silent damage. The drop in temperature and humidity disrupts the skin barrier, making it more prone to dryness, sensitivity, and premature ageing. However, what many people don’t realise is that some everyday morning habits may be exacerbating these issues, often without any obvious signs until the damage has accumulated.

How to prevent dry skin in winter

Dermatologist Dr Bindu Sthalekar, founder of Skin Smart Solutions, and Dr Shweta Tripathi, dermatologist, aesthetic injector, and founder of My Skindom, tell HT ShopNow that several common morning skincare habits may be drying out your skin and contributing to premature ageing.

But these can be prevented by avoiding some unhealthy skincare habits in winter.

1. Washing your face with hot water

A steaming-hot splash may feel comforting, but heat strips away essential lipids and ceramides from the skin barrier. “Hot water accelerates transepidermal water loss, leaving skin dry, rough, and vulnerable to fine lines”, says Dr Tripathi. Hot water also strips the skin’s natural moisture barrier and triggers inflammation, which speeds up collagen loss, explains Dr Sthalekar. Both dermatologists recommend switching to lukewarm water that cleans effectively without disrupting the skin’s natural moisture balance.

2. Starting the day without a moisturiser

Skipping moisturiser is a big no. Dr Tripathi explains why:“Overnight, the skin loses moisture and needs replenishment. Opt for barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and peptides, especially in winter.” She also recommends applying a moisturiser within 60 seconds of cleansing to trap moisture effectively. Dr Sthalekar says, “Choose a cream over a gel if you live in a dry environment or spend most of your time in heated spaces”.

3. Applying vitamin C without moisture or SPF

“Vitamin C serums are more potent in 2025 formulations, but they can be drying or irritating when applied to freshly cleansed skin, and can increase photosensitivity and irritation when applied without a sunscreen”, says Dr Tripathi. She also recommends applying a hydrating serum before vitamin C with broad-spectrum SPF 30+.

4. Using harsh or foaming cleansers

Using high-foam, sulphate-based cleansers may leave your skin squeaky clean, but that tightness is a sign of barrier damage. “Over time, this leads to irritation, dullness, and accelerated ageing, so replace them with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that cleans without stripping, ”Dr Sthalekar suggests.

5. Overusing caffeinated drinks before hydrating

“Morning coffee culture is huge, especially high-caffeine cold brews. But drinking caffeine before water can leave your skin dehydrated and looking dull throughout the day,” Dr Tripathi, tells HT ShopNow. Instead, she recommends drinking at least one glass of water before your morning caffeine.

6. Forgetting sunscreen just because it’s cold

Ultraviolet rays don’t hibernate for winter. In fact, UVA, the wavelength responsible for DNA damage and ageing, remains constant year-round. Pair sunscreen with antioxidants for enhanced protection, especially in polluted urban environments.

7. Applying active ingredients to dry skin

Try to reduce using retinoids, acids, and exfoliating serums as they can become harsher on your skin in winter, suggests Dr Sthalekar. Applying them on dry, dehydrated skin amplifies irritation, and sometimes micro-inflammation is a major driver of premature ageing. The best way to include these serums and acids is to layer them strategically.

“If irritation persists, apply every alternate night or use short-contact therapy. This ensures results without compromising the skin barrier”, she asserts.

8. Relying on SPF in makeup instead of actual sunscreen

“Tinted moisturisers and foundations now boast higher SPF levels, but they still don’t provide enough coverage on their own,” Dr Tripathi says. Inadequate sun protection remains the number 1 cause of premature skin ageing. So, she recommends always applying a dedicated sunscreen every morning.

Dr Sthalekar says winter skincare isn’t about adding more steps, it’s about choosing the right ones and doing them mindfully. Small morning changes can preserve skin elasticity, prevent premature ageing, and support a stronger, healthier skin barrier through the season.

Jennifer said, “I think as far as ageing gracefully, I have an eternal fountain of optimism and positivity. Call it youth if you want. But I think it all starts with how we love our bodies and love where we are.”

It indicates her positive outlook and approach towards life. Youth does not have a definitive age bracket. Instead, it relies on qualities like optimism and positivity, which can make one look youthful irrespective of their actual chronological age. Dermatologists share how anxiety and stress trigger breakouts, hair loss and ageing: ‘It worsens skin conditions’ | Health

Stress affects more than just your mind, it can manifest physically in many ways, with one of the most noticeable signs appearing on your skin. HT Lifestyle reached out to experts to understand how anxiety and tension impact skin health and what you can do about it. What’s the connection between face and stress

“Stress and anxiety disturb your mind so much that it can create havoc in the body, causing a number of health issues that can be both frustrating and embarrassing. Issues ranging from acne, eczema, hyperpigmentation to hair loss and skin sensitivity, the impact of stress on your skin can be significant,” says Dr Viral Desai, board-certified super specialist, cosmetic plastic and hair transplant surgeon, and Medical Director, DHI India.

Bringing his expertise to the same Dr Satish Bhatia, board-certified dermatologist at the Indian Cancer Society in Mumbai, shared, “In today’s fast-paced world, with increasing workloads and deadlines, anxiety has become a common part of our lifestyle. Anxiety is a form of stress that affects the endocrine system, leading to hormonal changes. Hormones such as cortisol, epinephrine, and adrenaline, the body’s “fight or flight” response, trigger various physical changes associated with anxiety.

How stress and anxiety show up on face

“When you’re feeling stressed or anxious, your body’s ‘fight or flight’ response is triggered, which results in the release of stress hormones like cortisol,” says Dr Desai. According to her, these hormones can disrupt your skin’s natural balance, leading to:

  • Acne breakouts: Increased oil production and inflammation that can cause pimples, blackheads and clogged pores.
  • Eczema flare-ups: Stress can also trigger eczema symptoms, leading to red, itchy, and inflamed skin.
  • Hair loss: Telogen effluvium, a condition caused by stress, can lead to excessive hair shedding which if not taken care of; can lead to decreased density gradually.
  • Skin sensitivity: Stress can make your skin more sensitive and hence the individual might overreact with redness, irritation, and reactions to products or environmental factors.
  • Hyperpigmentation: chronic stress can lead to melasma due to the hormonal imbalances caused.
  • Skin ageing: Stress can accelerate skin ageing by reducing collagen production, leading to fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots.
  • Rosacea: Chronic or severe Stress can trigger rosacea symptoms, which may cause redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels.
  • Itching and rashes: Stress can cause or worsen skin conditions like psoriasis, leading to itchy, scaly patches and rashes.

“These hormonal shifts can increase oil production, cause inflammation, and lead to skin irritation. In people with uncontrolled diabetes, thyroid disorders, or Cushing’s syndrome, anxiety-related hormonal imbalance can make the skin appear dry, trigger acne, rosacea, eczema, or even cause thickening and darkening of the skin known as Acanthosis Nigricans. Patients may also experience thinning or loss of hair,” says Dr Bhatia.

He adds, “For those with underlying skin conditions like acne, eczema, or psoriasis, anxiety-related stress can worsen symptoms or trigger flare-ups. The release of cortisol during stress and anxiety causes inflammation under the skin, which may accelerate ageing by reducing collagen and elastic fibres and leading to the loss of facial fat pads, making the skin appear older and tired. Anxiety-related skin issues are often psychological as well. Emotional distress from visible skin problems can create a vicious cycle, anxiety worsens skin issues, and worsening skin issues fuel further anxiety.”

How to manage stress-related skin issues

According to Dr Desai, while stress is an inevitable part of life, you may still manage it in various ways :

  • Stress-free activities: Engage in activities that help you relax, such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.
  • Get enough sleep: 7-8 hours of sleep per night is the key to help regulate stress hormones and support skin & overall health.
  • Use gentle skincare products: Choose products that are fragrance & carcinogenic preservative-free and hypoallergenic to minimise irritation.
  • Seek professional help: Consult a dermatologist to address underlying skin issues and get a personalised skincare and treatment plan. Treatments like chemical peels, lasers, and medicines might help reduce the visual impact.

“Breaking this cycle requires a holistic approach. There is a strong correlation between skin diseases and anxiety, with anxiety often decreasing as age increases. Along with consulting a dermatologist, psychological intervention can be crucial, especially for younger patients dealing with skin conditions,” says Dr Bhatia.

In a heartfelt statement from his family, Terence Stamp was confirmed dead at the age of 87 on August 17th.

He left behind “an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come”.  

With almost 100 credits to his name as an actor, director and writer, Terence Stamp’s career spanned six decades. 

Most notably, Stamp starred as General Zod in the Superman movies. 

Stamp, however, was more than a star in Richard Lester’s comic flick; he was a Golden Globe winner, Oscar nominee and one of Empire’s 100 Sexiest Film Stars of all time. 

Here is the life and career of the late, great Terence Stamp. 

Young star and the roaring 60s. 

Born July 22nd 1938, Terence Stamp grew up in London during the Second World War and lived through the Blitz. 

Stamp won a scholarship to train at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, where he met a rising star with a cockney accent, Michael Caine. 

In 1962, at 24 years old, the East London native made his silver screen debut in Peter Ustinov’s Billy Budd, a failed adaptation of Herman Melville’s book of the same name. 

His performance as the titular character garnered Stamp international recognition as well as an Academy Award nomination. 

During the era of Babydoll dresses, berets and Beehive hairdos, Stamp collaborated with some of the most revered filmmakers. 

The Oscar nominee starred in William Wyler’s The Collector (1965), Joseph Losey’s Modesty Blaise alongside Samantha Eggar (1966), John Schlesinger’s Far from the Madding Crowd (1967) and featured in Julie Christie’s first film, Poor Cow (1967) 

Stamp was even offered the role of James Bond before Sean Connery broke into movie history as 007. 

While Connery was undeniably charismatic as MI5’s best agent and, to some, a perfect embodiment of the character, it would have been interesting to see if Stamp took his martini shaken or stirred.

A Villainous Calling 

As the 1970s began to wrap up, Stamp appeared in his most iconic role to date. 

He transformed into one of Superman’s nemesis and greatest challenge – General Zod. 

Delivering one of the most terrifying line deliveries as the supervillain, Terence Stamp’s “Kneel before Zod” edged him into comic book movie history. 

Superman II (1980) is when Stamp fully gave into his supervillainous ways and delivered a frightening performance as Superman’s greatest enemy in Christopher Reeve’s second instalment as the Kryptonian. 

Stamp’s stellar performance was praised by critics, with his turn as General Zod appearing in numerous articles on the best villains of all time. 

A Drag Queen to Remember 

After his turn in the comic book film industry, Stamp began to take on more unconventional roles in the 1990s, famously starring in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. 

The movie, based on real-life events, follows two drag queens (played by Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce) and a transgender woman as they journey across the Australian Outback. 

His performance as Bernadette Bassenger, the ageing Drag Queen, won Stamp a BAFTA nomination. 

Grossing over $37 million, the movie was an Australian box office hit and received critical acclaim, with Stamp’s portrayal credited for its success. 

Terence Stamp’s career is one that many actors would dream of, one full of box office hits, critical acclaim and most importantly, one that transcended the 60 years he spent on screen.
