“Little boys don’t just fall from the sky… it’s as if he didn’t exist.” Time for an adventure! Neon has revealed their official trailer for a sci-fi animated adventure movie titled Arco, produced by Natalie Portman and directed by young French animation filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu (follow him @ugobienvenu) as his feature directorial debut after many comics. What if rainbows were actually time travelers flying across the sky? On his first flight through time, Arco crash lands from the year 3000 into our near future. His fall is witnessed by a little girl, Iris, who helps him return home. Set in 2075, a ten year old girl, Iris, meets Arco. He comes from an idyllic far future where time travel is possible. Iris shelters him and will do whatever it takes to help him return home. A wondrous odyssey filled with hope and optimism for our future, Arco is an enchanting fable from breakout filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu. The English-language voice cast for the US release features Will Ferrell, America Fererra, Flea, Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo, and Andy Samberg. It’s set for release in theaters this November. I had a chance to watch this film recently and yep I loved it. My kind of hard sci-fi storytelling mashed up with a lovely story about changing our future. Definitely worth a watch.

Here’s the official US trailer for Ugo Bienvenu’s animation film Arco, direct from Neon’s YouTube:

The Jonas Brothers — Kevin, Joe, and Nick — are set to bring holiday cheer to fans with their upcoming film A Very Jonas Christmas Movie. Disney+ released the official trailer on Monday, offering a glimpse into the heartwarming and humorous story that explores family, fame, and festive spirit. Written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, and directed by Jessica Yu, the film will premiere on November 14 on Disney+ and Hulu.

The trailer opens with the trio wrapping up a concert in London before planning to fly home to New York for Christmas. While Nick and Kevin chat with their wives, Priyanka Chopra and Danielle Jonas, in sweet cameo appearances over video calls, Joe decides to unwind at a local bar. There, he confides in a stranger, admitting, “As the Jonas Brothers, we’re great. But as brothers, whatever magic was there is just… dead.” Their holiday plans take a chaotic turn when they discover their private jet has been destroyed, leaving them stranded and forced to spend Christmas together in unexpected circumstances.

Alongside the brothers’ heartwarming journey of reconnection, the film also explores Joe’s budding romance with Lucy, played by Chloe Bennet. Charlie Bruber Goes on an Experimental Folk Adventure » PopMatters

by jummy84 November 4, 2025
written by jummy84

Begin to experience the music of Charlie Bruber by dropping the needle on the first track of his new record. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by the sheer variety of everything that follows. Prized Burden, Burber’s second album, begins with the song “Charlie?”, a spacey, widescreen instrumental soundscape featuring Burber on an Oberheim OB8 synthesizer, accompanied by co-producer Murphy Janssen on thunderous, larger-than-life drums. The track sounds like a progressive rock band from circa 1973 during an entertaining, if woozy, sound check.

“Charlie?” is one of several somewhat experimental instrumental tracks (calling them “interludes” undercuts their impact) that dot this powerful new record from the multi-talented Minneapolis resident, which follows his debut solo LP, Finding the Muse (2023). Much of Prized Burden is actually rooted in singer-songwriter folk rock. Bruber and a small cadre of deeply talented fellow musicians weave their way through his songs, which seem to harken back to an era of deeply felt, folk-leaning compositions that would sound right at home in an excellent record collection from a bygone yet well-aged era.

The downbeat, minor-key “Complexion” exudes a pastoral warmth that evokes John Martyn, with Charlie Bruber’s acoustic guitar and Jack Barrett’s piano meshing with gleaming vocal harmonies featuring Stephanie Ehrlich. The expert acoustic fingerpicking on “Mother Morning” fits in beautifully with the bass, piano, and Mellotron all played by Bruber (joined again by Ehrlich and the low-key syncopated drumming of JT Bates).

More instrumental wonders follow, such as on the puzzling, ethereal “That Way”, which seems to take cues from the mysterious nature of film scores. Later, tracks like the odd, experimental “Caricature” and the distorted electric stoner fuzz of “I Wanna Play Gtr” serve as unexpected palate cleansers in between the more emotional tales of love and everyday life. The sonic linchpin of the single “Sweet Friend” is Kevin Gastonguay’s Fender Rhodes and Clavinet, bringing a retro edge to an irresistible, catchy ode to a fading friendship: “How can I be who I am,” Bruber sings, “When you think you got me figured out / Why did you stick around my friend / You boxed me in / A means to an end”).

Other highlights include the shimmering soft-rock chug of the title track, the jazzy folk of “Day to Day”, and the curious tropical vibe of “Vai e Volta,” which starts in a simple enough groove before Carla Hassett sings the Portuguese lyrics and stretches the melodies into phrasing that’s both comforting and a bit disarming. Dropping a song with this unusual of a makeup, both lyrically and musically, is an interesting but ultimately perfect choice in a record filled with interesting options.

“Vai e Volta” leads into the closing track, “Up and Around”. This slight but delicious nugget has Charlie Bruber on vocals and acoustic guitar for 48 charming seconds. “He’s gone away / What can I say / He’s here to stay / Up and around you / Don’t you know?” Prized Burden sees Charlie Bruber trying out several different things at which he and his band all collectively excel.

The music may not be uniformly experimental by nature, but the way this unique, utterly lovable record navigates different stylistic paths while maintaining its consistently high quality is a testament to both the artist and the album, which will only improve with every listen.

“Known throughout Wildwood as The General. She embodies power & unshakeable grace.” Laika revealed a fascinating 3-minute making of featurette for their next stop-motion animated movie called Wildwood – now set for release sometime in 2026. We featured the very first teaser for this back in 2024 – they’ve been developing it for years and it’s only now finishing up. The character of Prue was revealed in the first look – Prue McKeel (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and her friend Curtis are drawn into a hidden, magical forest near Portland after Prue’s baby brother Mac is kidnapped by crows, led by a mysterious woman. The voice cast includes Jacob Tremblay as Curtis, Carey Mulligan, Awkwafina, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Charlie Day, Amandla Stenberg, Tom Waits, Jemaine Clement, & Richard E. Grant. This promo focuses on their famous stop-motion studio (based in Portland) figure out how to create the magical Golden Eagle character. They built 2 extraordinary puppets used in filming. “Meet The General, voiced by Angela Bassett, a fierce warrior and leader of the skies. Behind the scenes, the brilliant artists at Laika Studios are hand-crafting a character that soars beyond the screen through breathtaking stop-motion animation.” Can’t wait to see more. I love watching videos of stop-motion animation craft, always astonishing what they make.

Here’s the first look featurette for Travis Knight’s new film Wildwood, direct from Laika’s YouTube:

Step inside Laika’s Wildwood, where a powerful golden eagle commands the skies and magic takes flight. Wildwood – based on Colin Meloy’s illustrated book series – will see Prue McKeel leave behind her home of Portland, Oregon, venturing into Wildwood on a dark quest to save her baby brother, who’s been pilfered by a murder of crows. Wildwood is once again directed by filmmaker Travis Knight, who is also CEO of Laika, and director of the the movies Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee previously. The screenplay is written by Chris Butler (ParaNorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, Missing Link). Based on the graphic novel series written by Colin Meloy and illustrated by Carson Ellis. Produced by Arianne Sutner and Travis Knight. Made by Laika Entertainment’s animators based in Portland, Oregon. There’s no final release date for Wildwood yet – expected to arrive in early 2026. New Trailer for Thai Sci-Fi ‘Project Genesis’ Time Travel Adventure Film

by Alex Billington
September 29, 2025

“Reset the timeline by sending out a signal…” Capelight Pictures has debuted the full trailer for a Thai sci-fi movie called Project Genesis, also known as Taklee Genesis, made by filmmaker Chookiat Sakveerakul. After first debuting last year (first teaser here), this is finally getting a US release direct-to-VOD / Blu-ray starting in October – in time for spooky season. A time-travel adventure that takes place during the Cold War when a US military base in Thailand was testing the Taklee Genesis, a warp-speed teleporter even though it had not yet been fully developed. After the war, the Taklee Genesis was left behind in Thailand and was being illegally used by someone. A striking blend of practical effects, CGI spectacle, and emotional storytelling, Project Genesis cements Sakveerakul’s reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s most imaginative genre filmmakers. There’s dinosaurs, monsters, time travel, and much more in this! Starring Paula Taylor, Peter Corp Dyrendal, Wanarat Ratsameerat, and Nutthacha Jessica Padovan. It’s a breathtaking, high-concept journey that fuses time-travel science fiction with kaiju, dinosaurs, cavemen, and zombies—a bold cinematic mashup that spans over 7,000 years of history. This looks totally crazy! Reminds me of that other Thai CGI movie Rebirth: Home Sweet Home recently. It’s definitely worth a look if you’re a sci-fi geek.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Chookiat Sakveerakul’s film Project Genesis, direct from YouTube:

Scientist and single mother Stella (Paula Taylor) returns to her hometown after years away. One night, she receives a mysterious transmission on an old radio—it’s her long-lost father, missing for decades and now trapped in space within an alternate time configuration. To rescue him, Stella must track down the “Genesis Machine“, a relic of a classified CIA project hidden somewhere in Thailand. Her quest launches her into a kaleidoscopic journey through time and space—one that will pit her against prehistoric beasts, ancient tribes, mutant creatures, and the boundaries of reality itself. Project Genesis, also known as Taklee Genesis x Worlds Collide, is directed by Thai filmmaker Chookiat Sakveerakul, director of the films Evil, The 4 Movie, Grean Fictions, The Eyes Diary, Pay It Forward, Dew, Mondo, and many other new TV series recently. The screenplay is written by Chookiat Sakveerakul, Thanamas Dhalerngsuk, Sorawit Muangkaew. Produced by Monaiya Tharasak, Nakorn Phopairoj, and Kaweenipon Ketprasit. This initially premiered in Thailand one year ago in late 2024. Capelight Pictures will release Sakveerakul’s Project Genesis in the US direct-to-VOD / Blu-ray starting on October 21st, 2025 coming soon this fall. Anyone want to watch this?

“We have a chance to save our family – if we can find the Sandman.” Netflix has revealed the official trailer for In Your Dreams, an animated adventure from filmmakers Erik Benson and Alex Woo. This fun new creation reminds me of the other Netflix movie Slumberland with Jason Momoa, or even Pixar’s Dream Productions series as well, with a similar premise about kids who get into their dreams. In Your Dreams is a comedy adventure about Stevie and her brother Elliot who journey into the absurd landscape of their own dreams. If the siblings can withstand a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods, and the queen of nightmares, the Sandman will grant them their ultimate dream come true…the perfect family. “What if your dreams could become reality?” This was just unveiled with a preview at the Annecy Film Festival in France. The voice cast features Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Elias Janssen, Craig Robinson, Simu Liu, Cristin Milioti, Omid Djalili, Gia Carides, SungWon Cho, and Zachary Noah Piser. With music from John Debney, animation from Kuku Studios & Sony’s Imageworks. This looks like it should be very wild, zany fun.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Alex Woo’s film In Your Dreams, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:

If the siblings can withstand a snarky stuffed giraffe, zombie breakfast foods, and the queen of nightmares, their dream just might come true. When 12-year-old Stevie and her 8-year-old brother, Elliot, discover a magical picture book that says the Sandman can make any dream a reality, the duo embark on a life-affirming journey into the dream realm to find the mythical character. Longing to make their family perfect, the duo urgently wish for it to come true. In You Dreams is directed by animation filmmaker Alex Woo (aka Alexander Woo), director of Go! Go! Cory Carson: Chrissy Takes the Wheel previously and many other “Go! Go!” shorts & films. Co-directed by Erik Benson. The screenplay is also by Alex Woo and Erik Benson. Produced by Timothy Hahn & Gregg Taylor. Made by Kuku Studios and Sony Pictures Imageworks. Netflix releases In Your Dreams streaming on Netflix worldwide starting November 14th, 2025 this fall.

Mirai Review: Indian Mythology Meets Super Yodha Action In Teja Sajja’s Adventure

by jummy84 September 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Film:
Mirai

Bubble Rating:
3.0 stars

Director: Karthik Gattamneni

Writer: Karthik Gattamneni, Manibabu Karanam

Cast: Teja Sajja, Manoj Kumar, Ritika Nayak, Jagapathi Babu, Shriya Saran, Jayaram

Platform: In theatres

Runtime: 2 hours and 49 minute

Mirai Review

Mirai stands out with its ambitious attempt to blend Indian mythology with a modern superhero template. The storyline revolving around the search for the 9th scripture (Granth) offers a Ramayan-inspired twist, making the film unique compared to typical superhero dramas.

Mirai follows the extraordinary tale of Ambika (Shriya Saran), a mother who sacrifices her life to protect humanity and safeguard the nine sacred scriptures that hold the power to transform mortals into deities. From her sacrifice is born Veda (Teja Sajja), destined to become the Super Yodha, a warrior chosen to savr the final and most powerful scripture the 9th Granth, Mirai. Standing against him is Mahavir Lama (Manoj Kumar Manchu), a ruthless asur who seeks the scripture to ascend as God. The film unfolds as a mythological superhero saga of sacrifice, destiny, and cosmic battle.

What Works

The scale is massive, with stunning visuals across the Himalayas, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Japan, Tibet, and Morocco, giving the film an international feel. Action sequences are choreographed with flair, and the mythological undertones provide a cultural depth that resonates with Indian audiences.

Teja Sajja power-packed performance in Mirai is the USP of the film. He effortlessly balances the intensity, emotion, and heroism in this fantasy adventure. His screen presence and action sequences make him a compelling super yodha. Director Karthik Gattamneni crafts a visually stunning spectacle, blending mythology with modern storytelling, while keeping the narrative engaging and larger-than-life.

What Doesn’t Work

While the film dares to be ambitious, the execution falters in parts. The screenplay sometimes feels stretched, with uneven pacing between the myth-lowkey dialogues and superhero action. Emotional beats don’t always land, and certain CGI portions fail to match the grandeur promised. The villain arc, though menacing, could have been more layered.

Technical Analysis

The cinematography is a major strength, capturing diverse landscapes beautifully. The VFX ranges from breathtaking to inconsistent, but the effort to create a larger-than-life superhero universe is commendable. The music and background score elevate key moments, though the editing could have been sharper to trim down the runtime.

Star Performances

Teja Sajja as Veda transforms into a compelling Super Yodha, balancing innocence with intensity. He carries the film’s weight on his shoulders.

Manoj Kumar Manchu as Mahavir Lama (Black Sword) delivers a striking performance as the ruthless asur bent on destroying mankind for the scripture.

Ritika Nayak as Vibha provides grace and emotional depth and is one of the most important character in the story.

Shriya Saran as Ambika brings elegance to her divine role. Her sacrifice for the people will touch your heart, also the performance is magnetic on screen.

The supporting cast including Tanjq Keller, Jagapathi Babu, Jayaram, Raghu Ram, Koushik Mahata, and Sriram Reddy add presence and give their valuable contribution to the storyline.

Conclusion

Mirai is a bold step in Telugu cinema’s superhero genre mythology meets Marvel-style spectacle. While not flawless, it’s a visual adventure that entertains and introduces audiences to a Ramayan-inspired superhero saga. Worth a watch for its scale and Teja Sajja’s committed performance, though it leaves room for sharper storytelling in a potential sequel.

Werner Herzog Angolan Adventure Documentary

by jummy84 August 28, 2025
written by jummy84

There is only one Werner Herzog. The stoic German who, after being shot during an interview, replied in his signature deadpan, “it is not a significant bullet,” has an affinity for those at the end of the world — death row inmates, loners, mystics. Across his extraordinary body of work he has slipped between fiction and documentary with the ease of a man who doesn’t fear death. Now, aged 82, he has been steadily making documentaries exploring a mixture of modern and ancient phenomena — anything that enables him to travel and interview interesting oddballs. “Ghost Elephants” arrives with a little extra fanfare, premiering in Venice alongside the festival awarding him a lifetime achievement award in the form of an Honorary Lion.

VENICE, ITALY - AUGUST 27: Francis Ford Coppola (L) and Werner Herzog attend the Opening Ceremony and Golden Lion For Lifetime Achievement during the The 82nd Venice International Film Festival at Sala Grande on August 27, 2025 in Venice, Italy. (Photo by Max Cisotti/Dave Benett/WireImage)

On the surface, “Ghost Elephants” appears to be a throwback to one of Herzog’s canonical classics “Grizzly Man” (2005). Ill-fated American bear enthusiast and filmmaker Timothy Treadwell and living South African conservationist and explorer Dr. Steve Boyes are both men more comfortable living within nature than amongst their fellow humans. We meet Boyes misty-eyed at The Smithsonian National History Museum as he stands before the taxidermied corpse of the largest bull elephant to be exhibited in any museum. This, he explains, is “Henry” and Boyes has carried a photo of him around for a decade, only now seeing him for the first time. It is his dream to find the living descendants of Henry who he believes may roam in an elevated Angolan plateau nicknamed “the source of life.”

The hubristic nature of the expedition that follows, and the landscapes captured, call to mind a very different Herzog title. Although Boyes is far mellower than the wild-eyed Klaus Kinski, the pointless desire to make inroads in a land that does not need him evokes something of “Fitzcarraldo” (1982). This judgement is mine, for Herzog is far subtler and more ambivalent in his framing of Boyes, not fully suggesting in this film — made for the National Geographic with Disney money — that his subject is a loon but, equally, not leaving that interpretation off the table.

If Herzog has been compelled by the nature of the assignment to show reserve in the depiction of his leading man, he is more full-throated when it comes to his portrayal of the elephants in question; in the gulf between his enthusiasms, it is possible to see where his strongest sympathies lie. For although the scene at The Smithsonian initially seems set up to introduce us to Dr. Steve Boyes, it also introduces us to Henry, a majestic mammal technically called “The Fénykövi Elephant” after his killer, Josef Fénykövi.

To contextualize Henry, Herzog makes the most of time spent in Namibia, where Boyes has gone to find a crack team of master trackers from the Ju/Hoansi San Bushmen in the Kalahari, one of the oldest cultures on Earth whose language includes clicking. We meet a man named Xui who can “read tracks like a newspaper.” We also meet an aspiring soccer player turned anthropologist who tells the story of how Henry was shot and then chased for 15km in stark, brutal terms.

Herzog inserts a clip from the 1966 film “Africa Addis” of a family of elephants being gunned from a helicopter (anecdotally, a member of the audience was sobbing), as well as photos of a grinning Fénykövi in front of the wrinkled mountain of Henry’s fallen body. The absurdity of men thinking it’s an achievement to destroy beautiful creatures comes across in powerful terms. As the anthropologist puts it, “Man is on a mission to destroy what he’s part of, which is biodiversity.” It’s hard not to remember one of Herzog’s most iconic and indelible lines, “I believe the common denominator of the universe is not harmony, but chaos, hostility, and murder.”

Times have changed and big-game hunting is out of fashion, although coming so soon after harrowing images of elephant poaching, it is alarming when we witness the trackers working a deadly poison into a dart. “Ghost Elephants” is nothing if not a film which commits to asides, and it is compelling when Xui tells a story of his own brush with the poison. Indeed, it is in the patchwork of vignettes that unfold around Boyes, rather than the portrait of the man himself, that the film breathes and Werner Herzog’s auteurial colors flourish.

His whimsical adoration of the mighty beasts at the heart of things is expressed in footage of elephants moving underwater. These sequences — and cut-aways to other rare beasts — offer a magical respite from the underbaked plans of a man whose motive in finding the ghost elephants is never fully articulated. The implication is it’s part of a conservation effort and yet, as Dr. Boyes, Werner Herzog, San Bushman trackers, and trackers from the Luchazi tribe make the 2-day trip from Namibia to the Angolan highlands, the end goal is not given any anticipatory gravity.

Herzog weighs every scene equally, not using one to hype up the next. An audience with the King of Nkangala — whose permission is required to track the ghost elephants — unfolds as casually as  footage of a tribesmen spending all day fixing his instrument. There is, in fact, more awe to the latter sequence as expressed in narration: “I know I shouldn’t romanticize him but I know that … surrounded by chickens … it doesn’t get any better than that.”

This is a jazz film held together by Herzog’s distinctive narration with its irreverent sense of humor. It is both frustrating and intriguing to be kept in ignorance regarding his true views on Boyes. His subtle negging at the point of narrative climax is entertaining, yet it does also impact the structure of “Ghost Elephants” itself, denying us an overarching sense of perspective. The pleasure of listening to Herzog speak comes from his bracing candor, so it’s hard not to feel that something is amiss in his implication-driven take on Boyes.

Still, for those willing to piece the picture together from its most glorious sections, this is an affectionate and affection-inducing pursuit of real animals and unreachable dreams.

Grade: B

“Ghost Elephants” premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.
