Sony’s Shebnem Askin Seeking Action Comedies & Live-Action Remakes Of Japanese IP

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Shebnem Askin, Head of Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP) and Executive Vice President, Creative Production, shared insights into the studio’s international commissioning and acquisition process during a keynote at TIFFCOM.

She also revealed two items currently on her shopping list – action comedies and live-action remakes of Japanese anime properties.

While the studio’s local-language output currently includes a wide range of comedies, romcoms and a few horror titles, she said she’s planning to expand the range of genres.

“I got this job in the middle of Covid, and had a sense that audiences wanted to smile a little, so I may have heavily leaned down on comedies,” said Askin, adding that the studio has also made a few horrors and melodramas, with the latter category recently including Argentinian director Marcos Carnevale’s The Heart Knows.

“We’re now in development on Marcos’ next movie, also a melodrama. But I’m also looking right now for action comedies, which are really tough to find.”

She also explained that the studio’s local-language output includes both original stories, such as Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet, and titles based on existing IP, including the Japanese franchise Kingdom, which is based on a best-selling manga. One of her tasks in TIFFCOM is to find further Japanese IPs to adapt.

“Since I came here, I’m taking so many great meetings with a lot of companies that are producing incredible stories with anime,” Askin shared. “So we are starting to look at different anime movies which we can hopefully adapt as live-action movies around the world. So this is one of our missions by attending TIFFCOM.”

SPIP’s local-language slate includes a slew of remakes including Padre No Hay Más Que Uno, a Spanish remake of Argentinian film Ten Days Without Mom; I Hate Summer, a  Spanish remake of an Italian film; and three remakes of French title Price Of Parenting, which has been adapted in Italy, Mexico, and Spain.

Sony U.S. title 50 First Dates, which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, has been remade in Japan, Mexico and Thailand, with the latter remake currently in production.

Askin also shared details of Sony’s international greenlighting process: “We start with creative approval, but at the end of the day this is the movie business, so every film has to have a P&L [profit & loss statement]. So if we love a project creatively, let’s say it’s a German movie, the way we form a P&L is we get theatrical estimates from our local managing director in Germany.

“For television values, we are very lucky, because Sony has an international sales team in almost every major country in the world. So their estimates come together, and our passion and fight for the movie are combined and we move on to the greenlighting process. If we have at least have five signatures, we can greenlight the movie.”

Mahhi Vij Breaks Silence on Divorce Rumors with Jay Bhanushali, Threatens Legal Action Against Fake Reports

written by jummy84

Television actress Mahhi Vij and her husband Jay Bhanushali have once again become the subject of separation rumors. For months, speculation has been rife that the couple’s 14-year marriage had hit rock bottom with some reports even claiming that they had signed divorce papers between July and August 2025. However, putting all rumors to rest, Mahhi Vij has now issued a strong statement and threatened to take legal action against those spreading fake news about her marriage.

Mahhi Vij On Divorce Rumors

Mahhi took to her Instagram stories to express her anger over a viral post that claimed she and Jay had officially parted ways. The post read, “Is it all over? After 14 years of marriage, Mahhi Vij and Jay Bhanushali are getting a divorce. A source has confirmed that the divorce papers have been signed and everything was finalized between July and August.” Responding to this, Mahhi slammed the baseless rumor, writing, “Don’t post false news. I will take legal action against this.”

Her statement comes as a clear warning to gossip pages and online portals that continue to speculate about her personal life without verification. While Mahhi’s clarification has silenced ongoing chatter, many fans still wonder why Mahhi and Jay are rarely seen together in recent months. Their daughter, Tara, often appears in separate videos, sometimes with her father, other times with Mahhi, fueling curiosity about their relationship status.

Reports also surfaced that during Tara’s birthday celebration, both parents attended but appeared distant. However, such rumors have circulated before, and Mahhi has consistently denied them, calling out fake narratives about her marriage. While Mahhi Vij has categorically denied the divorce rumors and warned of legal action, fans hope the couple soon shares a united appearance to clear the air once and for all. Until then, her firm stance serves as a reminder to respect celebrities’ privacy and verify information before spreading it online.

Straight from Indonesia is a first look at the brand new action movie not only starring, but also directed by, action superstar actor Iko Uwais. This is his first time directing anything, telling a very Indonesian story about a rescue in the jungle. His movie is called Timur and he also stars in it as the titular lead character named Timur. It’s set for release starting in December – but only in Indonesia so far. The film is based on a real military incident in Indonesia, the Mapendumayang hostage rescue operation that took place in 1996. In this incident, 11 scientific researchers, including a few Westerners, were taken hostage [by the Free Papua Movement] in a mountainous eastern part of the country. Uwais plays Timur – a special army soldier leading the rescue. This dangerous mission brings him back to his childhood home, accompanied by his best friend, Sila. As they plunge into this forest full of danger, the humanitarian mission turns into a tough personal struggle. They not only have to fight to save the hostages, but also face tough challenges where Timur was raised. The film also stars Jimmy Kobogau, Aufa Assagaf, Yasamin Jasem, Fanny Ghassani, Kiki Narendra, Andri Mashadi. Just a quick look at early footage so far – at least there will be badass fights.

Here’s the first teaser trailer (+ poster) for Iko Uwais’ action thriller movie Timur, direct from YouTube:

“There’s a lot going on in London tonight.” Aura Entertainment has unveiled the official trailer for a movie called Wildcat, a high-stakes heist thriller from filmmaker James Nunn (of Shark Bait, One Shot & One More Shot). Not to be confused with Ethan Hawke’s film Wildcat from a few years ago, this also goes under the title Lioness (which they probably changed due to the Lioness series). A former special ops squad comes together for one last mission – a high-stakes robbery to rescue their commander’s young daughter. One big epic heist with London’s gangsters! Wildcat stars Kate Beckinsale, Lewis Tan, Charles Dance, Tom Bennett, Alice Krige, Edmund Kingsley, and Matt Willis. This is being released on VOD right away in a few weeks if anyone wants to find out if they pull it off! Though I can’t say this trailer impressed me much.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for James Nunn’s heist thriller Wildcat, direct from YouTube:

An ex-black ops team reunites to pull off a desperate heist as one last mission and save an 8-year-old girl. They have only 12 hours to navigate the lethal streets amidst a citywide riot, pay a large ransom, and frame a dangerous criminal organization. Wildcat, formerly known as Lioness, is directed by British action filmmaker James Nunn, director of the movies Tower Block, Eliminators, One Shot, Shark Bait, and One More Shot previously; plus tons of work as a second unit director. The screenplay is written by Dominic Burns. Produced by Crawford Anderson-Dillon, Dominic Burns, James Harris, Mark Lane. Aura Ent. debuts James Nunn’s Wildcat movie in theaters + on VOD starting on November 25th, 2025 coming up this fall.

Must Watch Awesome Trailer for ‘Last Samurai Standing’ Action Series

“You fools who live without meaning: kill each other, until just one remains.” Netflix has revealed their full official trailer for their awesome new Japanese action series called Last Samurai Standing, which is not a game show despite the title sounding like it might be. Based on the manga of the same name, it’s about a battle between nearly 300 samurai warriors in Kyoto back in the late 19th century. “One life, one point.” Shujiro enters a deadly game where points are earned for each kill. Who will be the last samurai standing in this sinister scheme? During the Meiji period, 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga, gather at the Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a huge cash prize. Each given a wooden tag, they join a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money. Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsy warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival. Let them fight! Starring Junichi Okada, Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Hiroshi Tamaki, Hideaki Itō, Gaku Hamada, Hiroshi Abe. This looks as badass as Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai and as entertaining as the recent Shogun series. Stylish and action-packed! I’ll definitely be watching when it’s out.

One point per life. The curtain rises on an epic battle royale between brave warriors who lived through an uncertain era. Each given a wooden tag, they join a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money. Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsy warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game – the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival. Last Samurai Standing, also titled イクサガミ in Japanese, is a series created & written & directed by Kento Yamaguchi (Tokyo City Girl, Dependence, “Our Fake Marriage”) & Michihito Fujii (The Last 10 Days, Village, Hard Days, The Parades, Shoutai). Also with eps directed by Toru Yamamoto. Creative direction by Junichi Okada. Based on a Japanese manga series of the same name, which is also based on the novel, written by Shogo Imamura and illustrated by Katsumi Tatsuzawa. Produced by Kosuke Oshida & Junichi Okada. One More International Trailer for ‘Predator: Badlands’ Sci-Fi Action

by Alex Billington

“Many of your kind have come here. None have survived…” 20th Century has unveiled one additional final international trailer for Predator: Badlands directed by Dan Trachtenberg. We already posted the final official US trailer a few weeks ago but this is the version they made to play outside of the US. After three full trailers before this, and a behind-the-scenes promo, there’s a few more new shots in here hinting at where this is going. Badlands is also officially rated PG-13, but it should still kick ass anyway. The director of Prey welcomes you to a whole world of hurt. Set on a remote planet, a young Yautja outcast from his clan finds an unlikely ally on his journey in search of the ultimate adversary. Co-starring Elle Fanning as an android + Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi as the young predator who must confront an apex predator. This is still looking like it will blow us all away this fall. Another awesome movie incoming this year! At this point, I’ve seen more than enough footage – I’m ready to catch this in theaters & have a blast. Bring on the action.

Here’s an extra international trailer (+ poster) for Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands, via YouTube:

Predator: Badlands is directed by acclaimed American filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, director of the films 10 Cloverfield Lane and Prey previously, the upcoming Predator: Killer of Killers animated movie, episodes of “Black Mirror” and “The Boys”, plus many other shorts. The screenplay is written by Dan Trachtenberg and Patrick Aison. Based on characters created by Jim Thomas & John Thomas. Produced by John Davis, Dan Trachtenberg, Marc Toberoff, Ben Rosenblatt, Brent O’Connor. 20th Century releases Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands movie in theaters (huzzah!!) nationwide starting on November 7th, 2025 coming up. Massive Indian Action Movie ‘Baahubali: The Epic’ Re-Release Trailer

“Strangers look up to me like I’m God. Who am I?!” Variance has revealed the new trailer for Baahubali: The Epic, a brand new version of the two-part Baahubali epic series of movies. This is pretty much India’s Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair (also finally getting released this year). Directed by S.S. Rajamouli, who later went on to make the world-shattering RRR, directed these original two action movies Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). Now he’s re-edited & remastered both of them into one single movie, combining footage from both with technical enhancements and previously unseen scenes. When a lost prince is rescued and raised in exile, he grows up unaware of his past. Years later, he returns to uncover the truth about his father’s murder & his mother’s imprisonment, and will rise to reclaim his place as the rightful king. Baahubali: The Epic stars Prabhas in dual roles, with Rana Daggubati, Anushka, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj, and Nassar. I actually went to see this in theaters back in 2015 and it’s proper awesome. I bet even players better now as this final version. Give it a shot and experience a real epic like no other on the BIGGEST screens around – including IMAX worldwide.

Here’s the new official trailer (+ poster) for S.S. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Epic, direct from YouTube:

Baahubali: The Epic Trailer

Baahubali: The Epic Poster

10 years before RRR took the world by storm, master filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli redefined Indian Cinema with his two-part Baahubali saga – from 2015 & 2017. Now, the epic tale of royalty, revenge, kings, and wars has been personally re-edited by the master himself into a single unforgettable cinematic experience, with fully remastered picture and sound (and a few new surprises), so audiences can reunite to experience the euphoria the way it was intended: on the big screen. When a lost prince (Prabhas) is rescued & raised in exile, he grows up unaware of his past. Years later, he returns to uncover the truth about his father’s murder and his mother’s imprisonment, and must rise to reclaim his place as the rightful king. Baahubali: The Epic (aka Bahubali) is directed by acclaimed Indian filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli, his 10th feature film at the time – he later directed RRR in 2022. Produced by Shobu Yarlagadda and Prasad Devineni under Arka Media Works. Made in the Telugu film industry (in both Telugu & Tamil). Baahubali: The Beginning first released in 2015; Baahubali: The Conclusion in 2017. Rajamouli’s Baahubali: The Epic opens in theaters worldwide starting October 31st, 2025 – with special screenings October 29th. Who wants to go watch it?

“I found it…” “Where’s the rest of it?” Aura Entertainment has unveiled an official trailer for a movie called Ice Fall, an action thriller made by filmmaker Stefan Ruzowitzky (best known for The Counterfeiters movie in 2007). Alas this is another of these junky action movies being dumped direct-to-video like the old days, but now that just means out on VOD right away. And, surprise surprise, it doesn’t look any good. The story revolves around a young Native American game warden who captures a notorious poacher only to learn that the poacher is aware of the location of a plane carrying millions of dollars that has crashed in a frozen lake. When criminals & corrupt cops close in, the unlikely pair must fight to survive & escape across the ice. This stars Danny Huston, Joel Kinnaman, Graham Greene, Frida Gustavsson, and DeVaughn Nixon. Aside from this being a Cliffhanger ripoff, this whole movie looks absolutely awful… Not even VOD worthy.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Stefan Ruzowitzky’s action movie Ice Fall, direct from YouTube:

Ice Fall Poster

“To Find Redemption, You’ll Have to Break Through.” 🧊 A young Indigenous game warden arrests a notorious poacher, only to learn he knows the location of a plane full of cash that crashed in a frozen lake. When criminals and corrupt cops close in, the unlikely pair must fight to survive and escape across the melting ice. Ice Fall is directed by Austrian filmmaker Stefan Ruzowitzky, director of the films Tempo, The Inheritors, Anatomy 1 & 2, All the Queen’s Men, The Counterfeiters, Deadfall, Radical Evil, Cold Hell, Patient Zero, Narcissus and Goldmund, Hinterland, and the series “8 Days” & “Barbarians”. The screenplay is written by Steve Isles and George Mahaffey. Produced by Dimo Aleksandrov, Vladimir Artemenko, Addam Bramich, Gary Hamilton, Ryan Hamilton, Robert Van Norden, & Ying Ye. Aura Entertainment will debut Ruzowitzky’s Ice Fall movie direct-to-VOD starting November 4th, 2025 this fall. Anyone want to watch?

Sitges 2025: Kenji Tanigaki’s ‘The Furious’ Has the Best Action of 2025

by Alex Billington
October 12, 2025

Holy hell – Wang Wei is coming and nothing will stop him! Let me just say it right up front: The Furious is the best action movie of 2025, hands down. Nothing is going to top this. While there are plenty of other great action movies this year, none of them have the fight scenes that this movie does, none of them are this level of full-on, go-totally-wild awesome. Made by Japanese action filmmaker Kenji Tanigaki, The Furious premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival in their prestigious Midnight Madness section, then played at Busan, Beyond Fest, and now at the Sitges Film Festival – which is where I caught up with it. And OMFG it totally rocks. This movie is The Raid 2 of the 2020s. Another instant action classic. There’s no question about it, this movie is up there with those two Indonesian action classics (both made by Gareth Evans). Two dudes take on an ENTIRE child trafficking empire on their own!! The Everything Everywhere All at Once stunts / fight team delivers the BEST sprawling, mind-blowing fight scenes since The Raid 2 in 2014. Yes, really, nothing has been this incredible since then. It totally blew away and now I can’t stop talking about it.

The Furious (火遮眼) is a Hong Kong / Chinese action movie made by action director Kenji Tanigaki, from a screenplay written by Mak Tin-shu. It was filmed in Bangkok, Thailand and took three months to shoot. The international mix of production countries, spoken languages, and locations is part of the fun – the movie isn’t actually set in a specific country or specific city because it doesn’t matter. It seems like Hong Kong at first, then becomes Indonesia or Thailand, or somewhere in Southeast Asia, but the news segments in the movie also don’t even specify a location. Not important anyway. It’s a story of two good guys fighting endless bad guys trying to save kids. It’s very similar to The Raid (or The Raid 2) with a premise following entirely independent unstoppable guys bringing down violent crime syndicates by fighting everyone. I don’t even care if the plot is kinda cliche the filmmaking pulls it all together in such a full-on, fist pump, stand up and cheer way with some of the best action ever filmed. The cast features Chinese actor Mo Tse as Wang Wei, a worker whose daughter is kidnapped; Indonesian actor Joe Taslim (of The Raid) as an activist journalist; Indonesian actor Yayan Ruhian (also from The Raid movies) as a bad guy; Thai actress Jeeja Yanin; and American stuntman / martial arts actor Brian Le as one of the henchman. A hell of a stellar cast to watch.

It’s exhilarating to watch the evolution of action cinema and be a part of it as a rabid viewer. I was there at the world premiere of The Raid at TIFF 2011 (my original review). I was there at the world premiere of The Raid 2 at Sundance 2014 (my original review). Now I am honestly overjoyed to also witness this next great step forward in innovative, unforgettable action filmmaking. I am so glad I got to experience this sitting in a packed cinema at a film festival. The Sitges audience and I collectively *lost our shit* during this about 20 times. It’s all so badass!! Full on cheering so many times for scenes that truly deserve this much exuberance. It punches right through the hype as THE best action movie of 2025. As entertaining as the John Wick franchise is, as awesome as it is watching 87North put together stunts in Hollywood movies, as fun as it is seeing Tom Cruise pull off death-defying stunts, none of that comes close to the jaw-dropping action in this movie. There’s a fight where a ladder becomes involved and it took me back to the early days of Jackie Chan pulling off seminal stunts like this. The Furious set a whole new precedent for modern filmmaking, and I’m sure many will try to copy this movie from now on. It’s the energetic combo of the Everything Everywhere fighting team with a batch of skilled action actors with Tanigaki’s refined direction all in perfect harmony.

The only real criticisms anyone can hurl at this movie deal with the plot itself. It’s a big trend nowadays with the world leaning into conservatism to make movies centered around child trafficking and the “good” people trying to stop the bad ones and save all of the children. This is mostly a campy storytelling gimmick and so exceptionally inaccurate compared to real world trafficking (and how to actually stop it) but audiences love cheering for the right people as part of feel good cinema. The Furious leaps fully into this trend with one of the most blatant “save the kids!” plots of the 2020s, but it doesn’t matter, because this time it fully succeeds in being a heroic, inspiring story – of these two guys kicking & punching & slashing the shit out of the bad guy criminals. They flip this plot into something that actually has meaning, where the fights actually have real stakes. It’s pure action cinema magic. Brian Le is the MVP – my audience was laughing & cheering for him he’s so delightfully fun to watch in this even though he’s one of the bad guys. But that’s the glory of the best action movies. Everyone is essential, everyone gives it their all, everyone makes every last punch count.

“You know what happens next.” “They’re gonna be coming for us…” Saban Films has unveiled the official trailer for another generic action movie called Exit Protocol, as usual being dumped out on VOD, starting in November later in the fall. How many more of these instantly forgettable, exceptionally mediocre action movies can they make with the same cast & same plot over and over? A notorious hitman who made a career killing other assassins, wants out. (Of course he does. It’s always the same plot.) But walking away is not an option. Now marked for death, he unexpectedly finds himself partnering with a former target to outrun his boss. From director Shane Dax Taylor (of The Best Man, The Christmas Classic, Murder Company), Exit Protocol stars Scott Martin, Dolph Lundgren, Charlotte Kirk, Lina Maya, Stephanie Beran, and Michael Jai White. This looks as boring and obvious as any movie can. Don’t waste any time on this one.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Shane Dax Taylor’s action movie Exit Protocol, from YouTube:

Exit Protocol Poster

An assassin whose specialty is killing other assassins trying to get out of the business decides to try to get out himself and must then team up with his former mark to escape the hired killers now gunning for them both. Exit Protocol is directed by American indie producer / director Shane Dax Taylor, director of other bad action movies including The Grey, Bloodworth, Isolation, Masquerade, The Best Man, The Christmas Classic, and Murder Company previously. The screenplay is written by Chad Law. It’s produced by Michael Slifkin, Jack Sheehan, Daniel Cummings, Scott Martin. Saban Films will debut Dax Taylor’s Exit Protocol action movie in select US theaters + on VOD starting November 7th, 2025 coming soon this fall. Anyone?
