IFFI 2025 | Anupam Kher declares ‘I am not going to accept any lifetime achievement awards for the next 20 years’

From picking up an audience member’s call in the middle of his session, to going around the auditorium and asking people what they would call their biopic- Anupam Kher’s talk on ‘Giving Up Is Not A Choice’ at the 56th International Film Festival of India had something in store for each person present.

Anupam Kher (Rishabh Suri/ HT)

He shared personal anecdotes, all in sync with the topic. For example, in his very first film Saaransh, he was replaced even before he started shoot! “I had prepped for months, and asked Mahesh Bhatt ji ‘Why did you cast me?’ He replied ‘Bald hai na!’ because the character required and old man. After some time, I was told I have been replaced by Sanjeev Kumar. I got so angry… maine Mahesh Bhatt ko jaakar bola ‘aap duniya ke number one fraud ho. Main Brahmin hoon, main aapko shraap deta hoon!’ And I had packed my luggage onto a taxi, and stormed off downstairs after showing him the taxi, adding that I was going to leave Mumbai. Upar se Mahesh ji ne awaaz maari ‘vaapis aaja’ ! I did this because giving up was just not a choice for me.”

Years have passed by, and now Anupam is going to sign his 550th film in December, as revealed by him. “I have told all media to never address me as a veteran or thespian. That would mean ‘your career is over, now you are a veteran and should retire’, but why should anyone else decide when I should retire? This is why I have decided I will not accept any lifetime achievement award for the next 20 years,” he said.

Working with Robert de Niro

Further recalling the first time he got a chance to act alongside Robert de Niro, ‘God of acting’ for him, in Silver Linings Playbook (2012), he continued, “I remember on the first day, I went to Robert’s van, I wanted to meet him and present an idol of Lord Ganesh made of ruby. His assistant told me ‘Bob (Robert’s nickname) doesn’t meet anyone before the shot’, par main Hindustani tha, peeche padh gaya. He had to meet me. Then I was looking forward to when I would have a scene with him.”

And what happened next left everyone shocked on set. “During the scene, Robert said to the director David O. Russell ‘this guy has been the cause of my son getting drunk, he could have gone back to the mental asylum, I will throw this character out of the house’ His POV was right. What he did in the shot is, he got angry and threw me out of the room, locked the door. I was standing out in the cold, no one gave me even a sweater because de Niro had thrown me out (as part of the scene). I was there for 45 minutes.”

Anupam came back inside later to find the director saying ‘I think this is working’. “I decided mujhe kaam hi nahi karna Hollywood mein,” Anupam recalled further, “I asked for five minutes, and everyone was sitting there- Bradley Cooper, Gwyneth Paltrow was drinking something. I said ‘there are eight characters in this scene, you didn’t ask for their interpretation’ There was pin drop silence. I further said ‘My character should tell Robert’s character that you brought up your son in this manner. I further said to David ‘you had this scene in your mind for years, are you throwing me out only because Mr de Niro told you?’ Aisa lag raha tha sab barbaad hai. Robert asked for another rehearsal and this time didn’t throw me out.”

Robert later agreed with Anupam’s take after inviting him to his van post the shoot. “Today I feel proud that I can call Mr Robert de Niro one of my friends. I did all that on the shoot day because giving up was not a choice,” he beamed.

Kelly Osbourne accepted a lifetime achievement award on behalf of her late father Ozzy Osbourne at the Birmingham Awards.

Kelly Osbourne collected a lifetime achievement award on her late father Ozzy Osbourne’s behalf

The Black Sabbath legend died at the age of 76 in July and his daughter took to social media to explain how being honoured at Friday’s (17.10.25) ceremony in his home city “would have meant the world to him”.

Kelly wrote on Instagram: “Last night I had the honour of accepting my father’s lifetime achievement award on his behalf at the @birminghamawards.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for their love and support. I know that my dad was shining down on us from heaven with pride because being a #Brummy meant more to him than anything. He loved the city and he loved the people.”

The 40-year-old star added: “This honour would have meant the world to him. From the bottom of my heart thank you. #birminghamforever.”

Kelly explained last month that falconry had helped her come to terms with her father’s passing and allowed her to discover her “smile again”.

Sharing a snap of herself with one of the birds on her Instagram Stories, Kelly penned: “In all my sadness and grief, I have found something that makes me happy!

“I never thought I would find my smile again through falconry but I did. I absolutely love being with the birds.”

The star – who collaborated with Ozzy on a UK chart-topping cover of Black Sabbath’s Changes in 2003 – had described her father’s death as “the hardest moment of my life” in the aftermath of the tragic news.

She wrote on social media at the time: “The love, support, and beautiful messages I’ve received from so many of you have truly helped carry me through the hardest moment of my life.

“Grief is a strange thing, it sneaks up on you in waves – I will not be ok for a while, but knowing my family is not alone in our pain make a difference.

“I’m holding on tight to the love, the light, and the legacy left behind.”

Ozzy passed away on July 22, following a series of health problems that included a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease.

His family said in a statement at the time: “It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love.”

Stuart Galbraith, Founder & CEO of Kilimanjaro Live, has been announced as the 2025 recipient of the LIVEtime Achievement Award at the forthcoming LIVE Awards, which take place in association with Skiddle, at Troxy in London on Wednesday 10th December.

Attended by over 600 professionals from across the UK live music sector, the annual LIVE Awards recognise and celebrate individuals and organisations who have made a significant impact during the last 12 months.

The LIVEtime Achievement Award is the top honour of the evening and is presented to someone who has played a principal role in driving forward and improving the UK’s live music business, having dedicated much of their career to the sector.

This year’s recipient, Stuart Galbraith, has been a key player in the growth of UK live music over the last four decades.

Galbraith’s career began as a Promoter at Leeds University in 1980, staging bands including The Clash, Simple Minds and U2.  In 1984 he joined MCP, where he stayed for 15 years working with artists including Simply Red, Def Leppard, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Metallica, U2, Simple Minds and AC/DC, and played a key role in the development of the Monsters of Rock Festival at Donington Park.

In 1999, SFX was created with Galbraith as a key founding member and Managing Director, helping to grow Live Nation that was created in 2005, a move that saw him promoting tours across arenas and stadiums and launching legendary festivals including Download, Wireless and Hyde Park (Hard Rock) Calling. In addition, iconic events such as Live8 in 2005 and Live Earth in 2007, saw Galbraith at the head of the organising team.

In 2008 Galbraith formed Kilimanjaro Live in partnership with AEG Live before it became an independent company in 2012, which has since expanded under its parent umbrella group, KMJ Entertainment, to house over twenty companies across all aspects of the industry including ticketing, festivals, spoken word, comedy, immersive experiences, family and theatrical. These brands include Regular Music, Singular, Fane, Flying Music, Gigantic, Myticket, Fane, Belladrum Festival, JAS Theatricals, FORM, Kontour, How To Academy and Arches London Bridge.

Stuart Galbraith said, ”Thank you to LIVE for honouring me with this LIVEtime Achievement Award. I am truly grateful to be recognised for the role I have played for the last four decades and will continue to play for many more years to come”.

Steve Lamacq, Chair of LIVE said, “Over the last 45 years, from when he first started putting on bands at Leeds University in 1980, Stuart Galbraith has become a bona fide legend in the UK live music industry. His relentless energy, passion and commitment to staging world class music events & incredible fan experiences with some of the biggest artists on the planet has seen him set the bar for others to reach. We are proud to recognise and honour his truly remarkable career with the 2025 LIVEtime Achievement Award.”

As LIVE’s primary annual fundraising event, all proceeds from the LIVE awards will go towards directly supporting  our ongoing work engaging government on a range of sector critical issues and will help support our members to meet their sustainability goals while fostering a more diverse, equitable and inclusive working environment.
