House of the Dragon favourite stars in glamorous first look at all-new BBC drama from acclaimed writer

After the success of BBC’s Mood, Nicôle Lecky is back for yet another drama and this time round, Wild Cherry looks to be just as dramatic and twisted as Lecky’s first series.

Not only has Lecky created and written the series, she’s also starring in the show as Gigi, a fellow resident of the affluent neighbourhood of Richford Lake that is drawn into the drama encircling the main mother-daughter duos at the heart of this tale.

The series follows friends Juliet (Eve Best) and Lorna (Carmen Ejogo), two successful working mothers, who are shocked when their daughters get embroiled in a school wide scandal.

Well now, we have a juicy first look at Wild Cherry, thanks to a brand new official trailer that has just landed – and boy, does it look like a series that is prime for a binge-watch.

Alongside the trailer, the official release date for the series has also now been confirmed, and will land on BBC One and iPlayer on Sunday 15th November.

Eve Best as Juliet, Amelia May as Allegra, Carmen Ejogo as Lorna and Imogen Faires as Grace in Wild Cherry. Lesley Edith

“In this town, they had wonderful lives,” we hear Lecky’s Gigi narrate at the start of the trailer. “It was a world of privilege for all of them but in Richford Lake, everyone was hiding something.”

We see flashes of the glamorous lives in question, from Juliet in the middle of a professional photoshoot to Grace (Imogen Faires) and Allegra (Amelia May) enjoying time at their private school together and then, going to parties in lavish homes.

But we then see Allegra admit to a boy that there’s a secret messaging app going round their school and we soon see things get a whole lot darker. It turns out that students have to pay to be featured on there, posting provocative pictures in exchange for likes and comments, it seems.

It’s clear there’s drama brewing in both camps of students and their parents as we see the adults sit down for a dinner party, which looks to be rather tense. But then things take a turn for the worse when we see that one of Grace and Allegra’s friends has gone missing, with the police on the search for the truth.

Read more:

As we see both Grace and Allegra’s mugshots on a board in a police station, could they have something to do with it? But that simmering tension boils over into Juliet and Lorna’s own dynamic, with Lorna telling Juliet to not tell her how to parent her own daughter.

“Nobody knew what they were capable of – until it was too late,” we then hear as the scene shows Juliet, Allegra, Lorna and Grace all staring seriously at their reflections in a mirror. Could it be in the aftermath of something terrible? We’ll just have to wait and see.

The official synopsis for Wild Cherry reads: “In Richford Lake things appear perfect for super-mum Juliet (Eve Best) and business mogul Lorna (Carmen Ejogo), but when their teens Grace (Imogen Faires) and Allegra (Amelia May) are accused of a shocking scandal at their exclusive private school, toxic secrets and lies ripple throughout the community.

“A coming-of-age drama for both mothers and daughters as they navigate privilege, power and social media. “Like mother like daughter” rings loudly in a complex world, where danger and betrayal is never far from the surface – even in a perfect town.”

Official Trailer for Acclaimed Doc ‘Cutting Through Rocks’ from Iran

“You all have the power to do anything.” Film Forum has unveiled the official US trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled Cutting Through Rocks, made by the filmmakers Mohammadreza Eyni & Sara Khaki. This premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (listed as one of my favorite films at the fest) and it played at tons of other fests including Hot Docs, Visions du Réel, Edinburgh, Woodstock, Vancouver, and many others. As the first elected councilwoman of her Iranian village up in the north, Sara Shahverdi aims to break long-held patriarchal traditions by training teenage girls to ride motorcycles and stopping child marriages. When accusations arise questioning Sara’s intentions to empower all the girls, her identity is put in turmoil. But she fights back. A real, genuine badass and feminist hero – fighting for women and doing everything she can in her village. I’m a big fan of this film – I wrote in my recap: “An empowering, inspiring story of perseverance & progress no matter the circumstances or the oppression.” Worth a watch.

Cutting Through Rocks Poster

Patriarchy still reigns in the northwestern Iranian village where 37-year-old Sara Shahverdi—divorced, childless, and an avid motorcyclist—became the first woman elected to city council. Wife and husband team Khaki and Eyni followed Shahverdi’s journey over eight years, tracking her inspiring, upstream efforts to subvert economic systems and transform local attitudes (of men and women alike) that destine girls to matrimony and dependence. A midwife and one of nine children, Sara is both deeply connected to the everyday lives of her fellow villagers and a radical lone voice advocating—at great personal cost—for education over marriage, home co-ownership, and girls on bikes. Cutting Through Rocks is a doc film co-directed and co-produced by the filmmakers Mohammadreza Eyni (of The Friend’s House, Convergence: Courage in a Crisis) & Sara Khaki (also of Convergence: Courage in a Crisis). This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). Film Forum will debut Eyni & Khaki’s Cutting Through Rocks in select US theaters starting November 21st, 2025. Highly recommend this doc.

“I recall constantly trying to evade him. I’d always hide. I’m not afraid anymore…” Fandor has revealed an official trailer for the acclaimed thriller The Things You Kill, a film set in Turkey made by award-winning Canadian-Iranian director named Alireza Khatami. This first premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier in the year, earning some rave reviews from critics. It’s a long, dusty, dry psychological thriller about two people battling over issues. Haunted by the suspicious death of his ailing mother, a university professor coerces his enigmatic gardener to execute a cold-blooded act of vengeance. The film stars Ekin Koç, Erkan Kolçak Köstendil, Hazar Ergüçlü, Ercan Kesal, Serhat Nalbantoğlu, Aysan Sümercan, & Selen Kurtaran. Opening in limited US theaters in November. Reviews state the film is “absorbing, suspenseful, and deeply moving — a case study in how to make an effective psychological thriller.” It’s good – take a look.

Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Alireza Khatami’s film The Things You Kill, from YouTube:

Diane Martel, Acclaimed Video Director, Dead at 63

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Diane Martel, acclaimed video director and all-around creative talent, has died at the age of 63. A statement issued to Rolling Stone confirmed that she passed away on Thursday (Sept. 18).

“Diane passed away peacefully at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital  – surrounded by friends and family – after a long battle with breast cancer,” relayed her family. She is survived by her Aunt, Gail Merrifield Papp (wife of Joseph Papp, founder of The Public Theatre), her three beloved, loyal cats (Poki, PopPop, PomPom), and many loving lifetime friends.”

Known for her work with Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Ciara, Jennifer Lopez, Robin Thicke, Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams, Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, John Legend, and more, the industry collectively grieved the loss of the visionary powerhouse.

“You believed in me and I believed in you! You will forever hold a special place in my heart and I am forever grateful for all the magic we’ve were able to make together,” wrote Ciara on Instagram. Martel’s most recently released work is the singer’s “Ectasy” music video issued earlier this year.

“I know it was all God! Heaven has just gained an Angel. I love you so much @DianeMartel_ A.k.a. Miss D! Rest In Paradise,” she closed with a red heart emoji.

Gang Starr, the Hip-Hop duo comprised of MC Guru and DJ Premier, also released a tribute to Martel on social media, listing some of her most memorable work.

“R.I.P. DIANE MARTEL who passed yesterday Sept. 18th from breast Cancer,” began the post, which featured an image of Martel behind the camera.

“She directed our @gangstarr video ‘MASS APPEAL’ (1994). She directed so many classics from Onyx (Throw Ya Gunz), ODB (Brooklyn Zoo), Method Man (Bring The Pain), Clipse (Grindin), Big Shug (Treat U Better), Keith Murray (The Most Beautifullest Thing In This World), Khia (My Neck, My Back), Mariah Carey (Dreamlover/All I Want For Christmas), Christina Aguilera (Genie In A Bottle), Robin Thicke (Blurred Lines), Miley Cyrus (We Can’t Stop) and many more… And add Photography to her menu. Your endless history will remain recognized. Sleep Peacefully.”

Pusha T also shared a message on Instagram stories thanking Martel for “everything,” with her moniker Bucky Chrome.

Born in New York, Martel got her start in the 1990s as a street artist, according to her biography at the University of Oregon, where she was named the 2022 Harlan J. Strauss Visiting Filmmaker at the Department of Cinema Studies. As described, her experience in dance and choreography influenced her filmmaking career, with her first big projects existing as dance documentaries funded by the National Endowment for the Arts that aired on the Public Broadcasting Service.

She continued to enter the music video space, excelling behind the camera lens for Onyx’s “Throw Ya Gunz” video in 1992.

“I love performers and my minimalist work puts them front and center,” she explained to Grantland in 2013 as she broke down her work with women who express themselves sexually.

“They have to perform because there is not a lot else going on; they feel this on set, and the way I shoot invites them to contribute a lot. Some songs are about sex, some moments in careers are about sex. If it’s called for, we go there. I was a dancer, I know what it takes to go there.”

In VIBE Magazine’s December 2003 issue, Martel spoke to her passion for Hip-Hop and finding opportunity after dropping out of high school at the age of 16. She has also been featured in Rolling Stone, FADER, Paper Magazine, Flaunt, and more.

“Just like a hot beat makes you move, a hot video should excite and inspire you. Yes, it’s a sales tool, but it’s also a visual presentation of the artist’s poetry and culture interpreted by the director. Just like a sick lyricist, producer, or singer, a director must have an authentic vision, a point of view, and a voice,” she explained to Mimi Valdés.

“I feel blessed to work in my field.”

VIBE sends our condolences to the family, friends, fans, and collaborators of Diane Martel.
