ABC Host Met The Moment

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

From Oscar-envelope SNAFUs, to L.A. wildfire evacuations, to real-time tweet attacks from Donald Trump and advocating for children’s healthcare, Jimmy Kimmel has more than met the moment many times over the years.

Still, with the ABC late-night host’s return tonight after a weeklong benching … Well, as longtime nemesis Trump said on a May 2016 visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live!: “You never know what’s going to happen.”

With renewed threats against the Disney-owned network from Trump tonight after the show was taped, and affiliate owners Sinclair and Nexstar still not showing Live! even though ABC brought it back, an initially cosplaying Kimmel (Google it) more than met the moment Tuesday — like we kinda knew he would.

Greeted by a standing ovation and chants of “Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy!” from his studio audience, and revealing news of a German job offer, Kimmel started off with a nod to the great Jack Parr’s return to the air after a corporate run-in of his own in 1960. Warming up, he thanked his fellow late-night hosts past and present, his fans and fans of free speech like “even my old pal Ted Cruz.”

Yet, for all the anger and backlash around Kimmel’s suspension, the longtime host’s deft decision Tuesday was to speak to the conservative activist’s grieving family and the big picture in America right now.

Oh, and never forgetting Live! is late-night comedy, Kimmel turned the spotlight of free speech on Trump and his real-life FCC chair Brendon Carr by showing their own contradictory words and actions vis a vis free speech. In addition, Kimmel got some hilarious help and cultural Kevlar from Robert De Niro played the new sycophantic head of the FCC to seal the deal — cause that’s how the pros do it.

De Niro went straight into regulatory character to hit all the right notes.

“It’s just me Jimmy the chairman of the FCC, gently suggesting that you gently shut the f*ck up,” De Niro declared in the pre-taped bit. “But you can’t say that, that’s a violation of free speech,” Kimmel protested. “Oh, yeah, about that speech? It ain’t free no more,” De Niro replied, making it perfectly clear what was on the table.

Was it the greatest late-night show ever? No. Was it the greatest TV comeback ever? No. Was Kimmel weak for not coming out screaming that he was leaving ABC for the greener and likely less restrained pastures of Netflix or YouTube? Not at all. Kimmel has been doing late-night a long long time, decades in fact, and he knows that the way you win is playing the long long game — which is what we saw, as we have from him numerous times before.

If you were expecting an apology, this wasn’t the comeback where you were going to get it. Kimmel’s knee did not hit the studio floor Tuesday. Also, if you couldn’t watch because you lived in one of those markets ruled by Sinclair and Nexstar, Kimmel had some advice: streaming.

In a sweet extra to the whole thing, Trump’s outdated shivs of Kimmel having low ratings are going to look even more tin-eared in the next day or so when the numbers come in. Even with nearly 20% of ABC’s linear reach off limits thanks to Nexstar and Sinclair’s continued preemptions, they should be big.

One-liners, a hug from Guillermo and defending the First Amendment aside, there was, as one would expect after a week in which a late-night host going dark put where America is now in stark perspective, some tears Tuesday. In that vein, Kimmel’s voice broke a few times, especially when speaking of widow and now Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk for the undeniable grace and forgiveness she displayed this past weekend towards the man who killed her husband. Kimmel’s own grace under pressure was on display with his dedication to his craft and POV.

There was also a talk show to put on and the Live! team did just that tonight too.

Glen Powell was on to talk to Kimmel at the desk and charmingly promote his new September 30-debuting Hulu football series Chad Powers. Hot off pulling the plug on performances at the September 21 premiere of ABC News and Hulu’s Lilith Fair documentary in solidarity with Kimmel and his show, Sarah McLachlan provided the tunes tonight with something from her new album Broken Better. There was anticipation that the often outspoken songwriter would say something, as she did just a few days ago at they Lilith Fair: Building A Mystery screening, but, like the pro she is, McLachlan stuck to the task at hand and saw the bigger picture.

That ethos, after the necessary points were made, was at the heart of tonight’s Live! to everyone credit — and probably to ABC, Disney, Iger and Walden’s relief. That became all the more stark after Trump went online Tuesday after the slightly late-running show was taped and before it aired on the East Coast, huffing and puffing as usual.

“I think we’re going to test ABC out on this,” Trump wrote, handing Iger and Walden a redemption in so many ways. “Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative. A true bunch of losers!”

“I think we’ll see you tomorrow, good night,” the clearly winning Kimmel said at the end of tonight’s show. To that, Ethan Hawke and Abbott Elementary’s Lisa Ann Walters are the scheduled Live! tomorrow, with Yungblud as the musical guest — cause that’s how the pros do it.

Jimmy Kimmel Writers React to ABC Show Return After Charlie Kirk Joke

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

After ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week following the host’s remarks about the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, even those who have been part of Kimmel’s inner circle were unsure that the show would ever return.

“I’m truly shocked,” Ned Rice, a former writer for the late night program, tells The Hollywood Reporter about its planned return to the air Tuesday. “I would have bet a lot of money that this was over. After saying you’re suspended, I didn’t think everybody could make nice and [decide,] ‘Let’s try again.’”

Kimmel, a frequent target of President Donald Trump‘s ire for his quips lambasting the administration, commented during his Sept. 15 episode that MAGA Republicans were focused on distancing themselves from Kirk’s alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson. After FCC chairman Brendan Carr fanned the flames of dissension during an appearance on Benny Johnson’s podcast — leading TV affiliate conglomerates Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group to threaten to pull the show in their markets — ABC announced Wednesday that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be suspended indefinitely.

The show’s Tuesday return was presaged by a firestorm of pushback, ranging from protests at the Disney studio lot to viral social media posts from Hollywood figures encouraging others to cancel their subscriptions to such Disney-backed streaming services as Disney+ and Hulu. Even former Disney CEO Michael Eisner voiced concern over the suspension.

Among those protesting at Disney was Joe Strazzullo, a Kimmel writer for six years before his exit in 2021. “As a WGA member, I know the importance of solidarity,” Strazzullo tells THR about why he was compelled to make his voice heard. “We’re used to fighting back against bullies. Bullies are the reason many of us became comedy writers. I’m thrilled my friends at Jimmy Kimmel Live! are headed back to work.”

Although Kimmel’s supporters have heralded the return as a victory for freedom of expression, the fact remains that broadcast late night programs are perceived as increasingly less financially viable amid dwindling ratings. Over the summer, CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert was the first of the current core group of late night shows to get canceled, which spurred speculation about the axing being politically motivated ahead of the recently completed merger between Paramount and Skydance Media.

Rice has plenty of experience with the late night landscape, having written for numerous titles, including Bill Maher’s Real Time and Politically Incorrect, Jay Leno’s Tonight Show and Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show. “People just don’t watch those shows anymore,” admits Rice, who last wrote for Kimmel in 2009. “So I thought this was a convenient way of ABC unloading Jimmy. It killed two birds, you might say. [Tuesday’s] show is going to be pretty hot. That will be a real television moment, for sure.”

Of course, not everyone who might want to watch Kimmel’s return will get a chance to see it, as Nexstar and Sinclair will not air the show, making it dark on roughly a quarter of ABC stations. Assesses one former Kimmel writer, who asked to remain anonymous: “The Tonight Show premiered 71 years ago. [Since then,] late night has told jokes about 13 presidents, and only one has tried to take down all of late night.” The scribe adds about Sinclair’s politically conservative leanings, “People can just google Sinclair and see what they’re about.”

As for Kimmel’s future, his ABC contract expires in May, and he has previously hinted at looming retirement. For now, Rice expects the host to deliver the same barbs that he always has — “It would be crazy to try to change now” — but still worries about a cultural landscape losing its ability to poke at those with power.

“Americans love topical humor,” he says about late night TV. “We love to hear jokes about the president, about celebrities and so on. Something will have to replace it.”

Which ABC Stations Are Owned by the Company? – Hollywood Life

Two major television station conglomerates are “pre-empting” Jimmy Kimmel Live! despite ABC’s reinstatement of the show: Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group. The companies own multiple TV stations affiliated with The Walt Disney Company’s ABC. Here, we explain what Nexstar is, which ABC stations it oversees and how this affects Jimmy Kimmel.

What Is Nexstar Media Group?

Nexstar is the largest television station owner in the U.S. as of 2025. It owns 197 stations around the country. Nexstar now operates The CW and The CW Plus.

Will Nexstar Air Jimmy Kimmel?

No, like Sinclair Broadcast Group, Nexstar is also refusing to air Jimmy Kimmel Live! even though ABC reinstated the show.

On September 23, 2025, Nexstar released a statement, which read, “We made a decision last week to preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! following what ABC referred to as Mr. Kimmel’s ‘ill-timed and insensitive’ comments at a critical time in our national discourse. We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve.”

“In the meantime, we note that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be available nationwide on multiple Disney-owned streaming products, while our stations will focus on continuing to produce local news and other programming relevant to their respective markets,” Nexstar pointed out.

The updated news release was titled, “Company Will Monitor the Show as it Returns to ABC.”

JUST IN: Nexstar joins Sinclair, announces they will continue preempting Jimmy Kimmel following his comments on Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

What ABC Stations Belong to Nexstar?

Here are some of the ABC affiliate’s that Nexstar owns:

  • WDHN: Dothan, Alabama
  • WTNH: New Haven, Connecticut
  • WEHT: Evansville, Indiana
  • WGNO: New Orleans, Louisiana
  • WSYR-TV: Syracuse, New York

The full list of Nexstar’s ABC affiliated stations can be found here.

Why Won’t Nexstar Air Jimmy Kimmel Live!?

Like Sinclair, Nexstar pointed to a remark that Kimmel made related to Tyler Robinson, the suspected shooter in Charlie Kirk‘s murder.

“The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said during a September 15, 2025, episode of his late-night show. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”

Shortly thereafter, Nexstar alerted Disney and the public that it would not air Kimmel’s show for the “foreseeable future” and added that it “strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.”

Shortly after news broke of Kirk’s death, Kimmel released a formal statement on Instagram, sending his condolences to the Kirk family.

“Instead of the angry finger-pointing, can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?” Kimmel wrote in a message on Instagram. “On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is back in its late-night slot on ABC, but certain television stations run by Sinclair Broadcast Group will not air the show. The media conglomerate owns multiple stations associated with ABC and announced that Jimmy Kimmel is still “pre-empted” from airing on its channels. So, what exactly is Sinclair, and what is its significance in the television industry?

The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, and Kimmel were negotiating his return during his week-long suspension. A spokesperson for the company announced on September 22, 2025, “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Stephen Colbert reacts to ‘wonderful news’ Jimmy Kimmel is returning to ABC

Stephen Colbert says the “long national late-nightmare is over” as Jimmy Kimmel is set to return.

Stephen Colbert is delighted to have Jimmy Kimmel back on air

The 61-year-old star is delighted after his friend and fellow late night host’s suspension was ended by Disney, with his show returning to ABC on Tuesday (23.09.25) evening.

Speaking on The Late Show, Colbert said: “We do, like, 160 of these a year or something, and when I have the chance, it’s always nice to start the show with some good news.

“Well, just a few hours before we taped this broadcast, we got word that our long national late-nightmare is over, because Disney announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to air on ABC tomorrow, Tuesday night.

“Come on! Wonderful news for my dear friend Jimmy and his amazing staff.”

Colbert had previously referred to the decision to take Kimmel’s show off air early last week as “blatant censorship”.

The host – whose own programme is due to end next year – had said: “Tonight, we are all Jimmy Kimmel.

“Yesterday, after threats from Trump’s FCC Chair, ABC yanked Kimmel off the air indefinitely. That is blatant censorship.

“It always starts small. Remember, in week one of his presidency, call it Gulf of America. Sure, seems harmless, but with an autocrat, you cannot give an inch.

“If ABC thinks that this is going to satisfy the regime, they are woefully naïve.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was put on “indefinite” pause last week following comments the host had made about the killing of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, prompting a backlash and allegations of freedom of speech being suppressed.

On Monday (22.09.25), the Walt Disney Company confirmed the programme would return to the airwaves.

They said in a statement: “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive.

“We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Jimmy Kimmel to Return to ABC on Tuesday

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Jimmy Kimmel Live! will return to ABC television airwaves on Tuesday, The Walt Disney Company has announced.

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” ABC’s parent company, The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement Monday. “It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was initially pulled off the air last Wednesday following a series of dramatic developments stemming from comments Kimmel made about Charlie Kirk’s murder during his monologues earlier in the week. In response, Donald Trump’s FCC Chairman, Brendan Carr, demanded an apology and threatened the broadcast licenses of ABC affiliates. That prompted Nexstar and Sinclair — two of the nation’s largest owners of local TV stations — to announce they would be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the foreseeable future. ABC subsequently announced that Kimmel’s show would be suspended indefinitely.

Kimmel’s suspension was met with immense backlash amid concerns that it marked the latest attempt by Trump to censor dissenting voices, and yet another example of corporate capitulation to his administration. Kimmel’s late-night peers, both past and present, spoke out in his support — including Stephen Colbert, who called it “blatant censorship” by an “autocrat.” Earlier on Tuesday, more than 400 actors and musicians — among them Tom Hanks, Ben Stiller, Billy Crystal, Robert De Niro, Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, Jennifer Aniston, Michael Keaton, Olivia Rodrigo, and Cyndi Lauper — signed an open letter condemning Trump’s crackdown on free speech.

ABC Affiliates Air Celebrity Family Feud Re-Run Instead of Charlie Kirk Tribute

by jummy84 September 22, 2025
written by jummy84

Sinclair Broadcast Group reversed its decision to air a Charlie Kirk tribute on its affiliate channels during the time slot typically reserved for Jimmy Kimmel Live! Earlier in the week, the broadcaster pulled Kimmel’s late-night show following his comments about Kirk’s assassination and announced plans to run the tribute instead at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT on Friday.

But shortly before airtime, Sinclair issued a statement on social media saying the tribute would be made available on YouTube rather than on television. In its place, its affiliates aired ABC network programming — a re-run of Celebrity Family Feud. No explanation was given for the abrupt programming change.

Bill Maher Defends Kimmel While Reflecting on His 9/11 ABC Controversy

by jummy84 September 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Bill Maher is sharing his opinion on ABC’s decision to indefinitely preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with his perspective as a fellow late night host who endured his own share of controversy while on air with the same network.

The Real Time host wasted no time addressing the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s show at the top of his monologue, where he started, “Well, I guess you all heard Jimmy Kimmel, my friend, my compatriot, he’s canned by ABC for comments he made about Charlie Kirk’s assassin.”

“The day right after [he made the comments], the head of the FCC said he’s gonna revoke ABC’s license,” Maher added. “Let me just tell you something: I am not intimidated by the FCC. And if President Trump is watching, I have one thing to say to you — have you lost weight?”

He then addressed his own controversy that arose in 2001 while hosting ABC’s Politically Incorrect.

“It was 24 years to the day that I made comments on ABC that got me canceled from that network, and Jimmy Kimmel took my slot at Politically Incorrect. Oh yes, I got canceled before cancel even had a culture,” he said. “This s*** ain’t new. It’s worse, we’ll get to that, but you know, ABC, they are steady. ABC stands for ‘Always Be Caving.’”

Maher defended Kimmel, noting, “Jimmy, pal, I am with you, I support you, and on the bright side, you don’t have to pretend anymore that you like Disneyland.” Later in his monologue, he showed him even more support, further referencing the end of his tenure with ABC.

“Jimmy, let me just say, you did a great, funny show for two decades,” Maher said. “You should be proud of that. If this firing goes for you the way it did for me, you’ll get 23 years on a better network.”

Maher faced a wave of backlash 24 years ago when he made remarks about the 9/11 hijackers under a week after the attacks occurred on an episode of ABC’s Politically Incorrect. The series was one of the first late now shows to return to air following the terrorist attacks, as the episode arrived on Sept. 17, 2001.

There, conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza argued against the notion that the hijackers were “cowards,” stating, “Not true. Look at what they did. First of all, you have a whole bunch of guys who are willing to give their life. None of them backed out. All of them slammed themselves into pieces of concrete. These are warriors. And we have to realize that the principles of our way of life are in conflict with people in the world. And so — I mean, I’m all for understanding the sociological causes of this but we should not blame the victim. Americans shouldn’t blame themselves because other people want to bomb them.”

Maher responded, “But also, we should — we have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That’s cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardly.” Following his remarks, he issued an apology and ABC released a statement in support of Politically Incorrect.

The series was not pulled from air, though the show was canceled after the 01-02 season. A few months after the end of Politically Incorrect, ABC notably announced a new late night show with Kimmel.

Maher sat down with Joe Manchin and Alex Wagner during the panel segment of the Friday episode of Real Time, where he noted a past X post made my Charlie Kirk discussing free speech in the United States.

“Here’s the ultimate irony, though. Charlie Kirk said, ‘Hate speech does not exist legally in America.’ By the way, I’ve always been on the same page,” he started, before continuing to read Kirk’s post. “‘Hate speech does not exist legally in America,’ says Charlie Kirk. ‘There’s ugly speech. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech. And all of it is protected by the First Amendment. Keep America free.’ Could you guys at least honor the person you’re insisting that we honor by honoring his words?”

Earlier in his monologue, Maher noted that he didn’t agree with Kimmel’s comments, but noted “he shouldn’t lose his job for it.” He also addressed the silence from The View panel on the matter.

“I gotta say, and I’m friendly with the ladies on The View, but they didn’t say anything about [Kimmel’s suspension] this week. Nothing,” he said. “You know, ’cause it’s never been their thing to weigh in on the issues. It’s just an upbeat party show, that’s why they hired people named Joy and Sunny and Whoopi.”

Maher continued, “Girls, go out strong, OK? It won’t kill you. I promise it’s happened to me, and I may go out after this show. We don’t know.” In tune with the heavy news cycle, he, too, tackled Trump’s lawsuit against The New York Times that was dismissed on Friday.

“Now, Trump is going after The New York Times. He sued them for $15 billion. He said they’re a ‘mouthpiece of the Democratic Party.’ You know what, Don? They are. You’re right, and that’s their right to be that,” he said. “Like there’s not a thousand people on the right who are your mouthpiece. Okay, that’s how we work in this country.”

Maher’s take on the preemption of Jimmy Kimmel Live! comes a day after many late night TV hosts — including Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers — voiced their disapproval on the indefinite suspension. On Thursday night, most of the late night shows aired their first taped episode since ABC revealed their decision, where Colbert defended Kimmel.

Jimmy Kimmel Live! was “pre-empted indefinitely” by ABC on Wednesday shortly after Nexstar released a statement noting they would not air the planned episode and would preempt the long-running talk show for the foreseeable future.

The backlash stemmed from Kimmel’s remarks about Tyler Robinson, the alleged shooter of Charlie Kirk. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel said.

Following Kimmel’s comments during his monologue, Federal Communications Commission chair Brendan Carr went on a podcast on Wednesday where he publicly spoke out against Kimmel and urged affiliates to “push back” on ABC. Later in the day, it was announced that Kimmel was suspended.

A source told The Hollywood Reporter Kimmel was planning to address the backlash on Wednesday night’s show, which was canceled. He prepared to explain what he said and how it was taken out of context. The source added that Kimmel did not intend to apologize.

David Letterman voiced his opinion on the suspension on Thursday during a panel at the Atlantic Festival. “I feel bad about this because we all see where this is going, correct? It’s managed media. And it’s no good. It’s silly. It’s ridiculous,” he said. “You can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian criminal administration in the Oval Office. That’s just not how this works.”
