Madhuri Dixit Joins 8-Hour Shift Debate Amid Deepika Padukone Row; Says, “I’m A Workaholic, We Worked 12-Hours Every Day”

Madhuri Dixit – who is known as the Dhak-Dhak girl of Bollywood is all set to show a side like never before in her upcoming web show Mrs Deshpande. The actress – who rose to fame with iconic films such as Dil, Beta, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, Dil To Pagal Hai and more, is all set to play a jailed serial killer in the Hotstar show.

During a recent interaction, the actress – who has been part of the industry for over 4 decades, was asked her views about there being an 8-hour shift for actors on movie sets. This conversation gained prominence following Deepika Padukone’s ouster from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit. Read below to know all the ‘Lajja’ actress had to share.

Madhuri Dixit Weighs In On 8-Hour Shifts Debate

When asked about her views on the 8-hour shift debate, Madhuri Dixit told ANI, “The thing is that when we did Mrs Deshpande, we were working 12-hour shifts every day, like maybe more sometimes… So, I think to each his own.” She continued, “I’m a workaholic. So for me, maybe it’s different, but if a woman has that power and can say, ‘okay, I want to work these many hours,’ then that’s her prerogative, and that’s her life, and that’s how she wants to do it…Then more power to her.”

A while ago, Rani Mukerji also weighed in on the same topic. Stating that there should be better coordination and understanding between actors and producers, the ‘Mardaani’ actress said, “These things are up for conversation today because maybe people are discussing them outside. But this has been the norm with all professions. I’ve also done it where I have worked for certain hours. If the producer’s okay with it, you go ahead with the film. If the producer isn’t okay with it, you don’t make the film. So it’s also a choice. Nobody is forcing anything on anybody.”

Deepika Padukone Fires Back At 8-Hour Shift Row: ‘We Mistake Burnout For Commitment’

by jummy84 November 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Deepika Padukone has finally broken her silence on the controversy surrounding her demand for an eight-hour work shift — a debate reignited after her much-publicised exits from Spirit and Kalki 2898 AD sequel. In a candid interview with CNBC-TV18, she painted a picture of double standards in Bollywood, calling for systemic reform in an industry she described as “very disorganised.”

At the heart of her argument is an uncomfortable truth: many male superstars have been working eight-hour days — even weekdays-only schedules — without the scrutiny she’s facing now. “By virtue of being a woman, if that’s coming across as being pushy… so be it,” she said. For her, the problem isn’t just long hours — it’s that the culture glorifies overwork and mistakes burnout for dedication.

Deepika argued that being healthy isn’t a luxury, but a necessity: “Eight hours of work a day is enough for the human body and mind. Only when you’re healthy can you give your best.” She said flexible work hours should not be the exception, but a standard, especially for people who juggle motherhood and grueling work demands. Her own office reportedly follows an 8-hour, 5-day workweek, with maternity and paternity policies and facilities for working parents.

The fallout of these demands has been significant. When Deepika walked away from Spirit, rumors claimed she pushed for shorter hours, profit sharing and even a 25-person entourage with five-star accommodations. These reports gathered traction and fueled criticism, particularly because such requests came just months after she became a mother.

Her exit from Kalki 2 sparked further debate. It was formally announced that she would not reprise her role, and insiders claim her “work-culture demands” played a key part in the fallout. But Deepika insists her case isn’t about special treatment — it’s about basic fairness.

Calling the film industry disorganized, she said it’s time to bring in structure and professionalism. “We really never worked as an industry. It’s time that we brought in some system into this culture,” she argued.

Despite the heat she’s taken, Deepika says she’s unflinching. “I’m okay being abused at. I need to keep reinventing and pushing the boundaries,” she told reporters. She credited her background — raised by an athlete father, Prakash Padukone — for giving her the resilience to tune out noise and persist with what she believes is right.

Deepika’s stand has opened a larger conversation about gender and equity in Bollywood. Many see this as a benchmark moment: if one of the biggest stars can demand fair working conditions, it pressures the system to catch up. Some have already voiced support. For instance, actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh reportedly backed her publicly, highlighting the need for better work-life balance. Meanwhile, Sonakshi Sinha weighed in too: “You do need time for yourself,” she said.

Still, critics remain divided. Some question whether her demands are feasible, especially for large-scale, VFX-heavy productions where long hours may be tied to budget and deadlines. Others argue that her privileges make her push less relatable. But Deepika’s case is not only about her convenience — it’s about redefining what commitment and professionalism mean in modern cinema.

For her part, she’s not backing down. She insists that her fight is not for special favors, but for an industry that respects mental health, parenthood and sustainable work culture. Her exit from two major projects wasn’t a power play — it was a principled stand, and she wants that to spark more than headlines.

As the debate continues, Deepika Padukone’s message remains clear: work culture needs to evolve, not just for her, but for the many who create the stories the world watches.

Rashmika Mandanna opens up on work-life balance amid Deepika Padukone’s 8-hour shift demand: ‘I overwork, don’t do it’

by jummy84 October 28, 2025
written by jummy84

For the last few weeks, actor Rashmika Mandanna has been in the news for her engagement to Vijay Deverakonda and her recently released film Thamma. But now the beauty is busy gearing up for her next movie, The Girlfriend. Recently, producer Sreenivasa Kumar praised Rashmika’s work ethic, claiming that she never imposed any work-hour restrictions. This statement came amid the controversial debate about work timings which rose after Deepika Padukone’s alleged 8-hour shift demand for Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit. Well, Rashmika has now shared her thoughts on work-life balance, explaining the importance of not ‘overworking’.

Rashmika Mandanna and Deepika Padukone

Some time back Rashmika Mandanna mentioned that it has been months since she got a full 8-hour sleep. Referring to the same, when asked about work-life balance, Rashmika told Gulte, “I think us glorifying the fact that we overwork is not good. I overwork, and I’m telling you, it’s highly not suggestible. Don’t do it. It’s not sustainable. Don’t do it. Do what is comfortable for you, do what is right for you. Get those 8 hours, get those 9-10 hours also because trust me that’s going to save you in the later ages. As in, I have seen a lot of these conversations recently where people are like ‘okay, you know, work timing’ and all of that. I’ve done it both. And I’m telling you, this is not worth it. As in, of course, it’s a responsibility that you have. I tend to overwork myself because I take on so much more than a normal human being can and should. But I’m also not someone who will tell my teams that I can’t do something for them. If I know that they are struggling and they’re like ‘no we have this location only till now and we have to shoot so much in this time’ and all of that, I understand and I’ll give in.”

When director Rahul Ravindran said ‘It’s almost everyday in cinema’, Rashmika agreed and explained, “Yeah, that’s almost every day in cinema. And that’s the love and respect I have for my teams. But if I could choose for myself, I would say ‘please don’t make us actors do that, because there’s a lot that’s going on’. Not even actors. Directors, lightmen, music, everyone, just have, like you know how office time is 9 to 6 or 9 to 5 or 9 to 4, let us have that. Because there’s still a family life that I want to focus on, there’s still my sleep that I want to get in, I still want to work out so, you know, later on I’m not regretting that I wish I was, you know, healthy and fit and working out when I was younger. I’m still thinking about my future. But right now I don’t have a say because I’m taking on too much on myself.”

What are your thoughts on the ongoing shift debate in the film industry?

Iqra Aziz recently took to Instagram to voice her support for Deepika Padukone, who welcomed her daughter Dua last year, amid ongoing discussions about an 8-hour workday in the film industry. Pakistani actress Iqra Aziz expressed her solidarity with Deepika amid the debate over the demands for shorter working hours in Bollywood. The controversy gained traction after reports claimed Deepika had withdrawn from two major projects—Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD—allegedly due to her request for an eight-hour workday.

Deepika recently addressed the controversy in an interview with CNBC-TV18, highlighting that male superstars have been adhering to the same eight-hour schedule for years without attracting headlines. She pointed out that her request is not about the hours but about the perception of her being demanding.

On Instagram Stories, Iqra shared a clip of Deepika’s interview and wrote a supportive message. She said, “The focus isn’t on the 8-hour shift but on her perceived demanding nature. A mother striving for work-life balance should be supported. As long as she fulfills her commitments, her colleagues should be team players and respect her time.”

Hansal Mehta On Bollywood’s Working Hours Demand

In addition to Iqra, filmmaker Hansal Mehta also voiced his thoughts on the issue via social media. On X (formerly Twitter), he remarked, “In our line of work, a 12-hour day is politely called a ‘shift.’ But between chaotic shoots, endless commutes, rushed meals, and broken sleep, there’s little left for us. Where does our mental health or physical well-being fit in? The normalization of 12-hour workdays feels exploitative. It should be the exception, not the norm.”

Regarding Deepika’s recent statements, she has been in the spotlight for exiting Spirit—reportedly due to her request for an 8-hour workday—and stepping away from Kalki 2898 AD, with producers citing the need for a higher level of commitment.

Pakistani actor Iqra Aziz has voiced her support for Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone amid the ongoing debate over eight-hour work shifts in the Indian film industry. The discussion gained momentum after reports surfaced that Deepika had exited two major projects: Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD, reportedly because she requested an eight-hour workday.

Deepika Padukone has been in the news for exiting two films this year: Kalki 2898 AD sequel and Spirit.

Recently, Deepika addressed the controversy surrounding her request for an eight-hour workday. In an interview with CNBC-TV18, the actor pointed out that male superstars have been following the same eight-hour schedule for years, yet it has “never made headlines.”

Iqra took to Instagram to come forward and support Deepika, who welcomed her daughter Dua last year. Iqra wrote a note for Deepika on her Instagram Stories while sharing a clip of Deepika’s interview on the same.

Apart from Iqra, filmmaker Hansal Mehta also took to social media to weigh in on the ongoing debate around the eight-hour work shift system in the film industry.

“In our line of work, a 12-hour day is politely called a “shift.” The truth is, between the chaos of shoots, the endless commute, hurried meals and barely a few hours of broken sleep, there’s little left of us. Where does our mental health or physical well-being fit into this equation?,” Hansal wrote on X, adding, “The normalisation of 12-hour working days feels exploitative. It should be the exception, not the standard.”

What did Deepika say on the stir

Lately, Deepika has been in the spotlight for exiting Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit, reportedly over her request for an 8-hour workday. She has also stepped away from Kalki 2898 AD, with the makers stating that the project demands a “higher level of commitment”.

In the interview with CNBC-TV18, Deepika reacted when she was told she was facing a lot of pushback for her decision. She said, “By virtue of being a woman, if that’s coming across as being pushy or whatever, then so be it. But it is no secret that a lot of superstars, male superstars, in the Indian film industry, have been working for eight hours for years, and it’s never made headlines.”

“I don’t want to take names now and make this into a whole thing, but it is very commonly, publicly known that a lot of male actors have been working for eight hours a day for years. A lot of them only work for eight hours Monday to Friday. They do not work on weekends,” she added.

She also described the film industry as “very disorganised”, adding that she thinks “it’s time we brought in some system into this culture.”

Deepika Padukone Breaks Silence on Her 8-hour Workday Demand

by jummy84 October 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Actress Deepika Padukone has spoken out after discussions emerged about her decision to request an eight-hour working day on sets, following her exit from Spirit and the Kalki 2898 AD sequel. In an interview with CNBC-TV18, she addressed the criticism and explained her reasoning behind the move.
Deepika noted that male actors in the Indian film industry have long been working similar schedules, but it has not drawn much attention. “By virtue of being a woman, if that’s coming across as being pushy or whatever, then so be it. But it is no secret that a lot of superstars, male superstars, in the Indian film industry, have been working for eight hours for years, and it’s never made headlines,” she said.

She added that many male actors work eight hours a day, Monday to Friday, often without working on weekends. “I don’t want to take names now and make this into a whole thing, but it is very commonly, publicly known that a lot of male actors have been working for eight hours a day for years,” Deepika explained.
Speaking about the larger industry, she reflected on its working culture. “Even though the Indian film industry is termed as an industry, we have never really worked like an industry. It is a very disorganised industry. I think it’s time we brought in some system into this culture,” she said.

Deepika exited Spirit reportedly because her request to limit her working hours so she could spend time with her daughter, Dua, was not met. Soon after, Vyjayanthi Movies confirmed that she would no longer be part of the Kalki 2898 AD sequel, noting that the decision followed “careful consideration” and that a film like Kalki requires a high level of “commitment.”
On the work front, Deepika has already started shooting for Siddharth Anand’s King, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, and Abhishek Bachchan. She will also appear in Atlee’s upcoming project AA22xA6 alongside Allu Arjun. With these projects lined up, Deepika is moving forward while emphasizing the importance of structured work hours and balance in the industry, a conversation that continues to resonate with both actors and audiences.

Deepika Padukone’s 8-Hour ‘Spirit’: Why She’s Not Just Playing By Kalki-lations Anymore

by jummy84 October 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Actor Deepika Padukone has been a major talking point in Bollywood recently, primarily for her high-profile exit from two massive film projects: Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit and the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD. These departures, reportedly linked to her requests for an 8-hour workday and demands for higher compensation, have sparked a massive conversation about work-life balance and changing expectations for female stars in the film industry. Now, the new mom seems to have addressed the controversy head-on, stating she has always been determined to ask questions, challenge norms, and redefine the expectations placed on women.

Deepika’s comments came in reaction to her featuring prominently in the recently released IMDb report, 25 Years of Indian Cinema (2000-2025). The comprehensive report analyzed the top five most popular Indian movies released each year over the past quarter century. Out of the 130 movies scrutinized, 10 feature Deepika Padukone, placing her in the highly coveted 4th spot among actors with The Most Popular Titles.

Reacting to her inclusion in the prestigious list, Deepika spoke about the pressure on women in the industry, stressing her determination to challenge the status quo. “When I began my journey, I was often told how a woman must or is expected to navigate her career in order to be successful,” Deepika said. “However, from the very beginning, I was never afraid to ask questions, ruffle feathers, walk a more difficult path and challenge the status quo in order to reshape the mould we have all been expected to fit into.”

The star continued, linking her success to her authenticity and resilience: “The faith my family, fans and collaborators have had in me, have also empowered me to make the choices and decisions that I have, hopefully forever altering the path those after me will tread. IMDb’s Report on 25 Years of Indian Cinema further validates and strengthens my belief that honesty, authenticity and resilience matter, and that by being true to your core beliefs with consistency, change is possible.” Her statements are a clear validation of her recent decisions, framing them as deliberate attempts to advocate for herself and potentially set new professional standards.

IMDb Ranking and Ongoing Project Turmoil

The IMDb report positioned Deepika Padukone above numerous contemporaries and senior actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Ranbir Kapoor, Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Anushka Sharma, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ajay Devgn, Prabhas, and Alia Bhatt. Shah Rukh Khan took the top spot with 20 titles, followed by Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan with 11 titles each.

Deepika Padukone Statement and tge Context

The context for Deepika’s strong statement is the turmoil surrounding her film commitments. Earlier this month, Vyjayanthi Movies announced her exit from the Kalki 2898 AD sequel, stating: “A film like Kalki 2898 AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works.” Sources close to the production later told NDTV that the demands were extensive, including a 25% increase in her acting fee and a strict limit of a 7-hour daily shooting schedule. Other demands included 5-star stays for her 25-person crew.

Earlier this year, similar reports surfaced regarding her exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Spirit, which stars Prabhas. She reportedly demanded an 8-hour workday, a share in the film’s profits, and requested not to deliver her dialogues in Telugu, conditions that allegedly led to her stepping away.

The chatter intensified when Vanga posted a scathing, though indirect, note on X, seemingly criticizing Deepika for ‘ousting’ the script of his next film. He wrote, “When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith… But by doing this, you’ve ‘DISCLOSED’ the person that you are…. Putting down a Younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for?”

Despite the recent controversy, Deepika’s career trajectory remains strong. She recently announced her collaboration with Shah Rukh Khan yet again in his upcoming film, King, which is also set to feature Suhana Khan. Her ability to secure top projects while simultaneously pushing for better working conditions underscores her unique position of power in the industry.
