Jodie Whittaker reveals the iconic TV role she would have shaved her head for

by jummy84 October 9, 2025

She said: “I would have loved to have been Eleven in Stranger Things. I would have loved to have been a kid with a shaved head!”

“When I saw the first series I thought, ‘Oh my God, to be Millie Bobby Brown right now, what a part,'” Whittaker continued. “The first season of that show was incredible. It homages everything I adore, and that part is incredible. If I could have been a child with a skinhead, that would be the role for me, but I don’t think I was in the running.”

Whittaker laughed as she said: “So, no animosity to Millie Bobby Brown,” before suggesting that “Maybe if I had tried a little bit of sellotape to make me look a bit younger?”

Stranger Things fans are currently waiting for the show’s fifth and final season, which will be released in three parts starting later this year, while Whittaker can currently be seen playing con-woman Sam in ITV’s Frauds, opposite Suranne Jones.

Explaining what drew her to Frauds, Whittaker previously said: “When I read it, I was just blown away by how different these characters felt [and] this particular relationship, and the world that we were in… but it still felt authentic. I felt like I knew these people.

“As extreme as some of the characters are – we’re all pretty heightened – but there’s some kind of familiarity with it, and within this specific friendship.”

She also made a return to her role as the Doctor on Doctor Who earlier this year, for a cameo appearance in Ncuti Gatwa’s final episode, and has said she “wouldn’t hesitate” to come back again in future.

“It’s just my absolute happiness, Doctor Who,” she told The Times. “If someone said to me in 20 years, ‘I’ve written an episode and the Thirteenth comes back,’ I just wouldn’t hesitate. It’s absolute joy.”

Frauds is available to stream on ITVX now.

Todd Dewey Finds Himself Stranded & Rethinking Return

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Ice Road Truckers Season 12]

Coming off of the Ice Road Truckers Season 12 premiere last week, we found Todd Dewey still stranded. His brakes were completely locked. The October 8 episode of the returning History Channel reality series picked up where the veteran trucker was forced to sleep in his truck with ripped air lines needing repair. These lines needed to get reconnected or he wasn’t going anywhere. This ordeal got him contemplating why he decided to make another go under these wintery conditions. Adding insult to injury, Todd also cut his finger while working in the cold. Thanks to some serious MacGyvering he was able to jerry rig things enough to get  him through the 650-mile journey and back to Muskie Creek headquarters.

Meanwhile on the dark dangerous road at Garden Hill we checked in with Lisa Kelly as she struggled to load her backhaul. It was a school bus that needed to head for repairs so schoolchildren had a safe vehicle to transport them. With this return trip, Lisa had the opportunity to double earnings if she could meet the deadline delivery. This would go a long way to help get her own truck going at home. This meant an 800-trek back to Muskie Creek. The particular job made her feel nostalgic as a former school driver herself. Early into the ride, she noticed there was no heat coming from the truck, which is not good in these frigid temperatures that dip to dangerous conditions at night. The windows also fogged up and impeded her ability to see.

Scott “Scooter” Yuill and Lisa Kelly (History Channel)

Lisa, ever resourceful, used a torch to heat up the windows a bit. The goal was to keep enough heat so she doesn’t die. That became a priority when it was 40 below. She concluded the blower motor was out and checked on the fuse. The trucker called for help. Scott “Scooter” Yuill picked up the transmission and offered to meet up with her. It was nice to see a familiar face, but that didn’t change the fact Scott’s second opinion was Lisa was indeed “f*cked.” Lisa bundled up best she could while sleeping in her truck. There is no glamorous life of a trucker, even for the “Ice Queen.” She was able to thaw out meeting with Scott for breakfast. They decided on a $100 bet between them for who does the most miles this season. Lisa then continued her grueling travels and made the final push to Muskie Creek. She needed to get warm and have the heat fixed on he truck ASAP to get back in the driver’s seat.

Shaun, Zach, and Riley Harris (History Channel)

Scott had to make up for lost time on his own 800-mile trip to Red Sucker Lake. His wide load was delayed, but there was no room for error. He was able to get past the narrow bridge and an especially bumpy stretch that put his skills to the test. Scott felt the spiritual support of the prior driver who died two years prior. It was about making him proud and living up to his legacy. Once he made the destination, the offload was not easy. The machinery edged off his trailer. Thankfully, everything worked out. He left the folks there tobacco as a thank you and appreciation for their hospitality.

Shaun Harris and his sons Riley and Zach teamed up on an urgent recovery mission. For Riley, 21, and Zach, 31, the convoy job was their first big test. The plan was Shaun would pilot with the other two following in their rigs. They needed to venture 600 miles to Stony Rapids to deliver an excavator to a remote community. Before leaving the starting line, they blew an airbag on one of the trucks. Without a replacement, Shaun was on the hunt to find one and get back on track. The family got going until Zach, who was acting a bit cocky, hit a snag and found himself stuck on the shoulder of the road. Riley backed up to give him a tug. This was a humbling experience for Zach to have his little brother help him.

Variety, Panera, Digitas, Nicky Campbell Join Advertising Week Panel

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

Executives from Variety, Panera and Digitas, plus creator Nicky Campbell will take the Advertising Week stage on Oct. 9 for the “Leveraging Moments to Create Moments” panel. The group will share the strategy behind Variety’s partnership with Panera, as the two worked to create an organic, influencer-driven campaign promoting the restaurant chain’s new Croissant Toast Sandwich and limited-edition Croissant Clutch. The campaign was tied to fashion’s biggest night of the year: the Met Gala, which was held in May.

Speakers include Dea Lawrence, chief operating and marketing officer for Variety; Amy Lanzi, CEO of Digitas North America; Nicky Campbell, creator; and Beth Ringer, vice president of media strategy at Panera Bread.

The effort consisted of a three-part social-first video campaign along with alignment to Variety’s red carpet coverage of the night. The campaign demonstrates how brands can anchor themselves to cultural tentpoles to create moments that resonate far beyond the night itself.

Variety’s Panera partnership featured a Get Ready With Me style video from Nicky Campbell. “The integration of brand, marketing, and influencers is key to building a popular, well-thought-out campaign,” said Lawrence. “Our collaboration was a seamless fit, driving buzz and excitement for Panera’s new Croissant Toast Sandwich and clutch bag in an organic way.”

The panelists will share insights on how to harness hallmark moments for brand recognition, as well as how to combine brands with new sectors through innovative thinking and engage influencers in dynamic, culturally relevant ways. The conversation will take place on the Marketplace stage at 12:30 pm.

Torrey DeVitto Returns To 'Chicago Med' For Season 11

Torrey DeVitto Returns To ‘Chicago Med’ For Season 11

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

SPOILER ALERT: The following reveals major plot points from NBC‘s Chicago Med‘s 200th episode titled “A Game of Inches.”

EXCLUSIVE: Surprise! Torrey DeVitto returned to NBC’s Chicago Med for its special 200th episode, which aired tonight.

She joined Nick Gehlfuss, who plays her character Dr. Natalie Manning’s true love, Dr. Will Halstead. We confirmed in late August that he would reprise his role this season. Both are set to appear in multiple new episodes.

Since we last saw them in the Season 8 finale for Gehlfuss’s series exit, off-camera, Natalie and Will have been working on making their new family dynamic work. Becoming Owen’s stepfather has been challenging, which is to be expected. What’s essential is that Halstead is working on strengthening their bond, which he was trying to do with this special boys’ trip to Chicago without Natalie to attend a Bears game.

“It’s like going back home for a visit,” DeVitto shared with Deadline earlier this week. “It was really lovely to be there with everyone. It was as if no time had passed and I wasn’t expecting that.”

Speaking of expecting, there’s a Manstead baby on the way!!! However, fans will be unable to celebrate in a big way with friends old and new at Gaffney after her son is shot there. Stress will be high, and that’s not a good combo for someone pregnant.”

“It puts Natalie back in the thick of it on Chicago Med. When they called me and told me the storyline breakdown, I was like, ‘I would expect no less.’ Natalie always had some trauma or emotion, or something happening. Of course, I’m not going to come back to sit around eating candy or something. I’ll be back in the thick of it and bawling my eyes out,” she said with a laugh.

George Burns Jr/NBC

Gehlfuss shared with Deadline that he is equally overjoyed about bringing Manstead back, especially to share the fantastic baby news with longtime fans who have shipped them since day one.

“Knowing Torrey would join me for this storyline made the return all the more exciting and special. It really couldn’t have happened any other way, and it was wonderful to celebrate the 200th episode together. It was as if we hadn’t stopped working with one another; we fell right back into our rhythm,” Gehlfuss said.

He continued, “The most palpable part was that our characters are exploring such emotional material around parenthood, and we both are lucky enough to be navigating that in our personal lives. I got to meet her daughter for the first time on set! Just incredible. All of this played into our scenes together. The fans are going to be so surprised, and I hope satisfied.”

DeVitto and her husband, Jared LaPine, welcomed a daughter in November. Since becoming a first-time mom, DeVitto has taken a small break from acting to focus on being with her baby. This Chicago Med gig is her first role in nearly a year.

Chicago Med– L to R: Steven Weber, Luke Mitchell, Nick Gehlfuss and Torrey DeVitto in Episode 1103, “Horseshoes and Hand Grenades.”

George Burns Jr/NBC

Showrunner Allen MacDonald chimed in on his decision to have Natalie and Will return to continue their storylines in such a unique way.

“If you bring back Dr. Will Halstead, the audience naturally hopes to see Dr. Natalie Manning, too… which makes total sense since their love story is so intricately woven into Chicago Med history,” he said.

“It was always my intention to bring back both characters, but I wanted to play with that expectation in the 200th episode — make the audience believe that only Nick was returning, then surprise them with Natalie’s appearance in the final scene when Goodwin tells her by phone that Owen’s been shot,” he added.

Following the events of Season 11’s second episode, MacDonald tees up where the story will go from here.

“Looking forward to Episode 3, Natalie will join Will in Chicago for an emotionally harrowing episode as Owen’s life hangs in the balance. Natalie will admit to feeling cursed… her husband Jeff died when she was pregnant with Owen, and now she’s pregnant again, and she might lose her firstborn. It just made sense to the writing staff to build a story around Owen for the 200th episode — and 201st — since Natalie was pregnant with him in the pilot and gave birth to him during Season 1. It all felt of a piece to us,” MacDonald said.

He continued, “It was so amazing to see Torrey DeVitto and Nick Gehlfuss reunited on set. But for Will and Natalie, these episodes show how their relationship has developed and deepened, while also propelling them forward into the future.”

Could that future perhaps include a wedding? The two are not yet married, and while they don’t have to take that step necessarily, Chicago Med sure does know how to throw fun weddings. There’s also the possibility that the stress from Owen being shot, the pregnancy could end up in the danger zone, or the baby could come early. Hopefully, Natalie will have Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram), Gaffney ED’s attending physician in obstetrics and gynecology, available to help.

In closing, DeVitto has some words to share with Chicago Med’s devoted fans.

“I hear from fans when I’m out in public or through comments on Instagram about how much they miss Manstead and how they’re still rooting for them. I really hope that the OG fans really love Nick and my storyline that we’ve come together to do for them. This really feels like we’re doing it all for them,” she shared.

“One of the most disappointing things about leaving the show is that it didn’t feel like Will and Natalie got what they deserved. Even when I did come back for Nick’s exit, it still didn’t feel like they got what they deserved, considering how long they’ve been together. Now I feel like people will be satiated. I’m really excited for them to see it, and I hope they love it. If the fans weren’t so invested in Manstead, we wouldn’t be coming back,” she concluded.

New episodes of Chicago Med drop Wednesdays at 8 pm ET on NBC. All OneChicago series are produced by Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment.

Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein in episode 304 of Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
TV & Streaming

Here’s What People Are Saying

by jummy84 October 9, 2025
written by jummy84

After Monster: The Ed Gein Story debuted on Netflix on Friday, it soon earned the No. 2 spot on the streamer’s platform charts with 12.2 million views in its first week.

The true-crime series is the third season in the Monster anthology co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Like every season, it follows a serial killer (or two). But this time, the show centers around Ed Gein, a murderer known to kill women, wear their skin and faces and dig up graves. It stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) in the lead role.

And while the previous two seasons, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, earned a fair share of criticism for their alleged sensational portrayal of murder victims, Ed Gein is also stirring up some debate. It currently holds a 20 percent critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but its audience score more than doubles that, at 54 percent.

Before the show dropped on the streamer, Hunnam told The Hollywood Reporter what he hopes people focus on if they critique the show. “If people are compelled to talk about it and think about it, hopefully they’ll actually be compelled to watch the show,” Hunnam said. “What I would hope and feel really confident in is that it was a very sincere exploration of the human condition and why this boy did what he did.” He also added: “I never felt like we were sensationalizing it. I never felt on set that we did anything gratuitous or for shock impact. It was all in order to try to tell this story as honestly as we could.”

As Hunnam mentions, the show portrays Ed’s mental health struggles as an undiagnosed schizophrenic. “Ed at its core is a story of mental illness. It was as important for us to show the horror of his inner life and his sort of prison that his brain was trapped in to show that horror as it was about this or that kill, per se,” Brennan told THR.

Read on to learn what audiences are saying about Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

Cosmopolitan U.K. responded to the moment in the series, where Ed looks at the camera and says that they’re the ones who can’t look away, writing, “Monster: The Ed Gein Story feels like a critique of our desensitization.” The scene addressed Ed’s influence on media and how that scene was in response to people being obsessed with true crime. Hunnam told THR what he hopes that scene represents: “Is it Ed Gein who was abused and left in isolation and suffering from undiagnosed mental illness and went and that manifested in some pretty horrendous ways? Or was the monster the legion of filmmakers that took inspiration from his life and sensationalized it to make entertainment and darken the American psyche in the process?” he said. “Is Ed Gein the monster of this show, or is Hitchcock the monster of the show? Or are we the monster of the show because we’re watching it?”

The New York Times also added to the true crime appeal, writing, “It makes sense that prestige television would eventually come for Gein. Viewers have a seemingly insatiable appetite for stories, true and false, centered on the more outrageous aspects of human nature — an appetite that Murphy, with his American Horror Story, American Crime Story and Monster franchises, has made a late career of whetting.”

The U.K.’s Times wrote: “Gein’s story blurs with the audiences’ appalled reactions to Psycho in a not uninteresting way as Hitch questions what he’s started: ‘The audience has changed and I’m the one who changed them. Like hogs who tasted blood.’ Or who tasted ghoulish true crime. Another reading of all this might be that Murphy is turning things on us to play with criticisms that his work can be exploitative. We are the ones who want this stuff; he’s showing us that it was ever thus and inviting us to lap it up again, slaves to our worst instincts. Or is it being that clever?”

A viewer on Rotten Tomatoes wrote that the show effectively mixed emotions. “Loved this, along with some great characters Charlie Hunnam’s was brilliant as Ed Gein, evoked a lot of emotions, dislike, hate, frustration and in the end pity, it was a real mix of fact and artistic license, the links to the influenced movies and other serial killers I understood it and liked how they did it, I thought it worked really well.”

The Guardian gave a harsher take: “The Monster series’ ultimate assertion: that we live in a sick, sad world and thus should be shown the sick, sad things that happen in it. Maybe there is some value in that. Though, one wishes that Murphy and Brennan and all else involved in this dubious project would be honest about what interests them. If they want to revel in the blood and muck of American life, so be it. Plenty of people will happily hop into the gunk with them. But it’s rather galling to cloak that indecent fascination in pseudo-academic analysis. It’s possible that the Ed Gein Story clumsily grasps for higher meaning simply because it has to fill eight hours of programming. And yet it’s hard not to see a more sinister, self-exonerating motivation behind it. Whatever the reason, the end product is crass where it tries to be elegant, exploitative where it plays at compassion.”

Time magazine spoke about Adeline and Ed’s relationship, writing, “Adeline pores over the most gruesome documents of human experience available; she gets off on her proximity to a man who is killing people and defiling dead bodies. Yet her relationship with Ed is entirely selfish. After his arrest, she dolls herself up to give interviews in which she claims they were merely acquaintances and tries to change the subject to talk up her own dubious charms and talents. Like a fan geeking out at CrimeCon, she derives vicarious pleasure from real people’s pain but has empathy for neither the victims nor the tortured villain. Adeline is a forerunner of the hordes we see flocking to Ed once he is a celebrity—the line of gawkers who tour his home and bid on his belongings, without realizing the man running the auction is the son of a victim; the patrons at sold-out screenings of William Castle’s exploitative “sex horror” flicks; serial killers of the ’70s and ’80s who riff on his methods. Adeline is a point of comparison, too, for artists influenced by Ed.”

Time, went on to say: “Monster has, itself, been the target of criticism from people like the Menendezes and the families of Dahmer’s victims, who feel their traumas have been milked for sensation rather than sublimated into high art. I guess it’s possible that Brennan identifies more with Castle than with Hitchcock. In that case, Ed Gein is also a show that hates itself.”

Despite receiving some harsh takes, there were viewers who praised the cast’s acting chops and for it being entertaining. “The Ed Gein story was a good watch! The acting in this was brilliant, yes at times the flash backs were confusing but in the end it was a brilliant series that all linked well in the end. It definitely made me feel uncomfortable, like it’s suppose to. 5 star series all the way; I look forward to the next monster series,” one user wrote on Rotten Tomatoes.

Another user wrote: “Very interesting take on Ed’s life, his personality and struggles with untreated mental health. The way they created storylines within Ed Geins actual story was such a daring and gut wrenching way to show a broken human being in his darkest moments with schizophrenia, trauma, childhood abuse, mental illness (in which he suffered alone with all of it), and the monster it inevitably lead him to be. Truly fascinating.”

Claudia Winkleman explains her Celebrity Traitors picks: “How could you not?”

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

After much build-up, including the celebrity contestants digging up their own graves to win shields and taking part in the first challenge of the series, it was time for the famous faces to plead their case as to whether they should be a Faithful or a Traitor.

As she walked round and round and round the table, Winkleman chose Alan Carr, Cat Burns and Jonathan Ross to be her Traitors, before they all met in the turret and were given their first task.

But just how did Winkleman choose her Traitors? While the decision isn’t solely down to the host, it was a no-brainer for some of the picks.

Alan Carr. BBC/Studio Lambert/Euan Cherry

“I do those chats with them and they’re much longer than you see,” Winkleman told RadioTimes.com and other press.

“Then I go into a room with the bosses from the BBC, the brilliant casting group, and we sort of work [it] out together. We don’t have long, but Alan said he wanted to be a Traitor, and they were compelling. So how could you not?”

As revealed in the episode, the Traitors must murder in plain sight, all without being detected by the Faithful.

The onus was put on Alan Carr, who was instructed to touch someone’s face with pollen from a poisoned flower, all without arousing suspicion from the other contestants.

The episode ended on a cliffhanger, meaning viewers will have to wait until tomorrow (9th October) to find out who will be the first contestant to leave the daring competition.

Read more:

Viewers will also see if Alan Carr was the right pick, as his nerves certainly got the best of him throughout the day after being chosen as a Traitor – a fate he didn’t even know he wanted.

Prior the series launch, Carr said: “Well people have asked, would you like to be a Traitor? And the answer is, I don’t know. I’m fascinated to know how I would cope with it if I was.

“I’m not known for my poker face, but you’ve just got to adapt. I’m indecisive, and that’s the problem. But I think that’s probably good because I’d say it’s best to have an open mind.

“If I’m a Traitor, I’ll try to murder as many people as possible. If I’m a Faithful, I’ll try and catch those Traitors. Whichever side, I think you can’t help but get sucked in. It becomes your world and that’s the part that I’m quite looking forward to, the routine of it and just being fully immersed in it.”

Celebrity Traitors begins on Wednesday 8th October at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.

Are ’The Amazing Race’ Contestants Paid? Final Prize and More Payment Details

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

The Amazing Race is currently in its 38th season CBS, with a new cast of pairs racing around the world to win a grand prize. But how much do the competitors actually get for their time on the show?

Scroll down for everything we know about the payouts for the contestants on The Amazing Race and details about the money that the winners take home at the end of the race.

How much do The Amazing Race winners get?

The grand prize on The Amazing Race is $1 million for the winning pair. That amount has not changed since the show first premiered in 2001.

Of course, the $1 million is taxed, so the duo won’t walk away with that full amount. Since the prize is considered income, there are state and federal taxes taken out. The amount varies depending on what state the winners live in.

Do Amazing Race contestants get paid?

It’s not only the winners who walk away with money. Men’s Health previously reported that the runner-ups get $25,000 and the team that finishes in third place gets $10,000 (of course, this is all before taxes).

Executive producer Elise Doganieri told People that every team “gets a small percentage of a cash prize,” as well.  Mark “Abba” Abbattista, who competed on the show during Season 21, also confirmed to AV Club that all of the contestants receive “some kind of money for the order that you come in.” So, the first team eliminated would make the least amount, and so on.

For some contestants, who have to take time off work to be on the show, the payout isn’t always worth it. “It cost me quite a bit of money to go on the show, just because I wasn’t working,” Abbattista explained. “I’m self-employed, so if I’m not bringing money in, it’s not coming in. And, again, I’m not complaining about that. I knew that was the cost for me wanting to do the show, and fortunately I was able to do that. Still, it becomes a financial burden for some people.”

Do contestants pay for travel on The Amazing Race?

Contestants are not allowed to use their own money on the race. At the beginning of every leg, their envelopes contain a certain amount of money that they can use to get them through that leg. The amount varies depending on the country.

“We have figured out how much the taxi might cost, or a bus or train ticket,” Doganieri explained. “So we give them just enough money for that leg, and they have to be very careful not to overspend.”

If they run out of money, contestants can barter for money, but they are not allowed to beg, according to Doganieri.

Are The Amazing Race prizes all free?

The winners of every leg also receive a prize, which is usually a sponsored trip. The show partners with Expedia (formerly it was Travelocity), and the one-stop travel destination generally gives a trip away on each leg.

But, it’s not without some strings, according to Abbattista.” The trips are sponsored through whatever hotel puts up the trip and Travelocity is also a sponsor, so you have a liaison you go through,” he explained. “When the season is over, you do a bunch of legal paperwork then they turn you over to Travelocity. The woman I dealt with there was really helpful and nice and I wound up going on the trips and, yes, you pay taxes because it’s considered income as a prize. So if the trip is worth $10,000, guess what? You owe Uncle Sam $3,500. And they’re not all-inclusive. Your air is paid for and your hotel and they include some other things, like massages or a snorkel trip, but all the food is not included. So you’re spending money and going to places that you’re not necessarily interested in.”

MPA Study Underscores Potential of Brazil's Audiovisual Industry

MPA Study Underscores Potential of Brazil’s Audiovisual Industry

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — The audiovisual industry in Brazil had last year a R$ 70.2 billion (US$ 13.1 billion) total impact on the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and generated a total of 608,970 direct, indirect and induced jobs, according to a just-out Oxford Economics study “The Economic Contribution of Brazil’s Audiovisual Industry in 2024.”

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) in Brazil, which commissioned the study, released it during RioMarket, the business section of the Rio International Film Fest.

Brazil’s local audiovisual industry employees directly the same amount of people as the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector and over 50% more than automotive manufacturers in the country.

“It’s an industry with a notable multiplier effect over other industries: for instance, for every R$10 million of value created by the audiovisual industry, there was an additional contribution of R$12 million in other sectors of the Brazilian economy,” Andressa Pappas, general director of the MPA in Brazil, told Variety.

Free-to-air TV, led by the giant Globo group, is still the industry’s leading segment. It accounted for 47% of the industry’s GDP contribution and 44% of its direct employment contribution.

The video on demand segment was responsible for 27% of the industry’s GDP and 10% of jobs. Film exhibition repped 5% of the GDP contribution and 22% of jobs. Film and TV production and distribution account for 9% of GDP and 15% of the jobs. Pay TV accounted for 12% of the GDP and 7% of the jobs.

“These numbers show that the audiovisual industry in Brazil is powerful. It’s already a strong industry, but it will become much bigger, with proper planning,” said Walkiria Barbosa, Rio Fest’s executive director and int’l marketing and president of the Audiovisual Industry and Commerce Federation (FICA).

FICA, which gathers representatives of all segments of the Brazilian audiovisual industry and was officially launched during Rio Fest, aims to advance the consolidation of a state policy for the sector, planned transversally. The model is South Korea, which within a few decades managed to build domestically a strong production sector and then emerged from an unknown country to a film, series and music world power.

Can Brazil be the Next South Korea?

U.K.l consultant Amanda Groom, managing director of The Bridge, who worked for South Korean government agencies and helped to implement the successful policies that led to the rise of the Asian country’s film and TV industry, sees two potential new emerging audiovisual world powers: India and Brazil.

“There is significant business expansion that could be gained through working with nations such India and Brazil. These are growing markets with young populations that are hungry to view and work with the creative industries on the Global North,” Groom told Variety.

“India and Brazil are at a highly strategic moment in their development. Government and industry are aligned,” she added. “It is a very good time for the Global North industries, the creative industry of Europe, the U.S. and the U.K., to begin to take India and Brazil more seriously. We know this, because we noticed it in South Korea 15 years ago, when it was a small fish. We see the same level of support, enthusiasm, drive and professionalism coming from both India and Brazil.”
