Netflix’s Movie Theater Stunts Might Help Make It Cool

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

For years, it’s been Netflix and Chill, but it’s increasingly becoming Netflix and Party.

On Halloween on Friday, Netflix is again releasing a Sing-a-Long version of its mega-hit “KPop Demon Hunters” into theaters, encouraging costumes and trying to get even more fans out of the house by expanding to more territories and theaters. It’s a repeat of an event Netflix staged in August that managed to bring in a box office-topping $19.2 million. And following a trailer on Thursday, Netflix will screen its finale of “Stranger Things” in theaters on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

It’s attracted a ton of speculation that maybe, just maybe, Netflix is finally softening its stance on putting movies into theaters. Even though Netflix keeps telling you, no and please, for the love of God, stop asking.

“There’s no change in the strategy. Our strategy is to give our members exclusive first-run movies on
Netflix,” Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said just last week during earnings. “We occasionally release certain films in theaters for our fans like we did with ‘KPop Demon Hunters,’ or as part of our launch strategy, publicity, marketing, qualification, all those things, and we’ll continue to do that.”

Sure, Ted, but what do you really think about theaters?

“Behaviors evolve. Consumer behavior changes. I do think there’s something very special about it, but thank God it’s not the only way I can see a movie,” Sarandos said on a podcast in February.

But really? Still not sure I believe you.

“I believe it’s an outmoded idea, for most people, not for everybody,” he said again in April.

Fine, but Netflix said it would never have ads until it did, that it would never have sports until it did, and that it would never have live stand-up specials or password sharing crackdowns or stop telling us how many subscribers it had or in-person theme parks that inherently get you away from watching Netflix… all until it did.

STRANGER THINGS: SEASON 5. All that said, Netflix still isn’t doing “theatrical distribution.” It will never get to Amazon’s level of hoping to release 14-16 movies in theaters a year, report box office numbers, and play that volatile game of success and failure. But it has been ramping up its live events that drive fan engagement, sign-ups, and retention. And, oh by the way, just some of those events also take place inside movie theaters.

What Netflix is great at, more than any other legacy media company, is pivoting and reacting to a hit, capitalizing on what audiences are responding to on its platform. Netflix didn’t plan in advance to do live sing-a-long stunts for “KPop Demon Hunters,” but when the movie became quite literally its biggest of all time in a matter of weeks, it found a way to stage an event and maximize the film‘s pop culture impact.

So with the right thing, why wouldn’t Netflix do more of that? “Adolescence” or “Baby Reindeer” might never work in theaters, but it would not be a surprise to see an increase from one or two theatrical events a year to a handful more (Netflix had no comment for this story).

The question will be whether Netflix can bolster its events a bit more, giving the awards titles that get theatrical releases a bit more of a marketing bump to let audiences know they’re there? Guillermo del Toro recently touted that “Frankenstein” had expanded — “really” — to more theaters than you were probably aware. So can it do more to get butts in theater seats and not just make you aware that something is on Netflix?

Enter Greta Gerwig. For her “Narnia” movie, the only way Netflix could make sure it was working with a director on her caliber is to play ball with her desire for theaters. For that film, it’s splitting the difference between a wider theatrical release and utilizing IMAX in order to generate the feeling that this is a special, limited engagement event. We imagine the marketing dollars will come with it.

By doing more things out in the open, be it theatrical events, “Stranger Things” stage plays, Tudum fan events, or the Netflix House opening next month, Netflix is demonstrating that Netflix isn’t only a brand you can engage with in your home. If it can become an affinity brand and develop a similar loyalty, like the kind that people have for A24 or Criterion (in many ways, it already has and by a mile), all that is valuable toward getting more subscribers and keeping them around.

Even more than that, it can make Netflix cool.

YouTube TV Blackout of ABC, ESPN, Disney Networks in Deal Dispute

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Disney‘s networks including ESPN and ABC are going dark on YouTube TV.

Google says YouTube TV expects to remove Disney’s networks at the stroke of midnight ET, after the two sides remain far apart on a deal renewal to keep ABC, ESPN and more on the internet TV service. The main sticking point is price — Disney is asking for rate hikes that Google isn’t willing to agree to.

YouTube TV says that if Disney’s channels remain unavailable for “an extended period of time,” it will offer subscribers a one-time $20 credit. YouTube TV’s base subscription plan costs $82.99/month. With the blackout, TV users nationwide will lose their local ABC stations, as well as access to ESPN sports programming including NFL, college football, NBA and NHL games.

Beginning at 9 p.m. PT on Oct. 30/12 a.m. ET on Oct. 31, YouTube TV will begin pulling Disney-owned networks off its service, when the companies’ previous agreement expires. In addition to dropping the live networks, YouTube TV also is removing any DVR library recordings users have made from those networks.

Disney began alerting viewers on Oct. 23 about the carriage dispute with YouTube TV, pointing out that its networks could be removed from the pay-TV provider. YouTube TV is the biggest internet-TV service in the U.S., estimated to have more than 10 million subscribers. In second place is Disney, which just closed a deal to merge its Hulu + Live TV business with Fubo; together, those have almost 6 million subs in North America.

“Last week Disney used the threat of a blackout on YouTube TV as a negotiating tactic to force deal terms that would raise prices on our customers,” a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement. “They’re now following through on that threat, suspending their content on YouTube TV. This decision directly harms our subscribers while benefiting their own live TV products, including Hulu + Live TV and Fubo.”

The YouTube rep continued, “We know this is a frustrating and disappointing outcome for our subscribers and we continue to urge Disney to work with us constructively to reach a fair agreement that restores their networks to YouTube TV. If their content remains off YouTube TV for an extended period of time, we’ll offer subscribers a $20 credit.”

According to Disney, YouTube TV wants a better deal than anyone else in the market — including Comcast and Charter, which have more TV customers — and is unwilling to pay market rates for Disney’s networks or agree to terms that Disney has reached with other distributors, including it own Hulu + Live TV and Fubo services. In its negotiations with Google, Disney also has proposed new genre-based tiers and packaging flexibility to give YouTube TV customers more choices.

“Unfortunately, Google’s YouTube TV has chosen to deny their subscribers the content they value most by refusing to pay fair rates for our channels, including ESPN and ABC,” a Disney spokesperson said. “Without a new agreement in place, their subscribers will not have access to our programming, which includes the best lineup in live sports — anchored by the NFL, NBA, and college football, with 13 of the top 25 college teams playing this weekend.”

The Disney rep continued: “With a $3 trillion market cap, Google is using its market dominance to eliminate competition and undercut the industry-standard terms we’ve successfully negotiated with every other distributor. We know how frustrating this is for YouTube TV subscribers and remain committed to working toward a resolution as quickly as possible.”

Here’s the full list of networks being pulled from YouTube TV: ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, Freeform, FX, FXX, FXM, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, SEC Network, Nat Geo, Nat Geo Wild, ABC News Live, ACC Network, Localish; on the Spanish plan, ESPN Deportes, Baby TV Español and Nat Geo Mundo.

Disney is the latest media conglomerate to lock horns with Google over YouTube TV this year. Others that have fought with the company include Paramount Global (now Paramount Skydance), Fox Corp. and NBCUniversal — each of which reached a new deal without a blackout. However, YouTube TV dropped Univision and other TelevisaUnivision-owned networks at the end of September after the two sides could not reach a new agreement.

In 2023, Disney and Charter had a public battle over a renewal, before the two sides resolved their differences to avoid a blackout. In 2024, ESPN and other Disney nets went dark on DirecTV for nearly two weeks before they reached a new deal. Earlier this month, Disney inked a carriage renewal pact with Comcast without any drama.

In December 2021, Disney and Google reached a carriage renewal after a two-day blackout. YouTube TV first launched in April 2017.

In another wrinkle to the current Disney/Google standoff, Justin Connolly, Disney’s former head of distribution, joined YouTube as VP of global head of media this spring. Disney sued YouTube and Connolly, alleging breach of contract and seeking to block his employment at Google, in part citing Connolly’s knowledge of Disney as it pertained to contract renewal talks for YouTube TV. After Disney lost a legal ruling in the case, they recently reached a settlement on the matter.

Sony’s Shebnem Askin Seeking Action Comedies & Live-Action Remakes Of Japanese IP

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Shebnem Askin, Head of Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP) and Executive Vice President, Creative Production, shared insights into the studio’s international commissioning and acquisition process during a keynote at TIFFCOM.

She also revealed two items currently on her shopping list – action comedies and live-action remakes of Japanese anime properties.

While the studio’s local-language output currently includes a wide range of comedies, romcoms and a few horror titles, she said she’s planning to expand the range of genres.

“I got this job in the middle of Covid, and had a sense that audiences wanted to smile a little, so I may have heavily leaned down on comedies,” said Askin, adding that the studio has also made a few horrors and melodramas, with the latter category recently including Argentinian director Marcos Carnevale’s The Heart Knows.

“We’re now in development on Marcos’ next movie, also a melodrama. But I’m also looking right now for action comedies, which are really tough to find.”

She also explained that the studio’s local-language output includes both original stories, such as Mamoru Hosoda’s Scarlet, and titles based on existing IP, including the Japanese franchise Kingdom, which is based on a best-selling manga. One of her tasks in TIFFCOM is to find further Japanese IPs to adapt.

“Since I came here, I’m taking so many great meetings with a lot of companies that are producing incredible stories with anime,” Askin shared. “So we are starting to look at different anime movies which we can hopefully adapt as live-action movies around the world. So this is one of our missions by attending TIFFCOM.”

SPIP’s local-language slate includes a slew of remakes including Padre No Hay Más Que Uno, a Spanish remake of Argentinian film Ten Days Without Mom; I Hate Summer, a  Spanish remake of an Italian film; and three remakes of French title Price Of Parenting, which has been adapted in Italy, Mexico, and Spain.

Sony U.S. title 50 First Dates, which starred Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, has been remade in Japan, Mexico and Thailand, with the latter remake currently in production.

Askin also shared details of Sony’s international greenlighting process: “We start with creative approval, but at the end of the day this is the movie business, so every film has to have a P&L [profit & loss statement]. So if we love a project creatively, let’s say it’s a German movie, the way we form a P&L is we get theatrical estimates from our local managing director in Germany.

“For television values, we are very lucky, because Sony has an international sales team in almost every major country in the world. So their estimates come together, and our passion and fight for the movie are combined and we move on to the greenlighting process. If we have at least have five signatures, we can greenlight the movie.”

Welcome to Derry’ Premiere Ratings Score Big for HBO

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

The premiere of IT: Welcome to Derry enticed a lot of viewers back into Pennywise’s clutches.

The HBO series debuted to 5.7 million cross-platform viewers (measured over three days), making Welcome to Derry the third biggest series debut in HBO’s history. It trails only the premieres of House of the Dragon — which had nearly 10 million day-one viewers in 2022 — and The Last of Us, which opened with 4.7 million on its first night in 2023 and moved well past 5.7 million in following the three days.

IT: Welcome to Derry is a prequel to the It movies, which are based on Stephen King’s novel. The show is set in Derry, Maine, in the early 1960s — during one of the “cycles” in which the shape-shifting killer clown Pennywise resurfaces to wreak havoc.

The premiere ends with a shocking bit of violence that upends the way the two movies unfolded — purposely, IT filmmakers Andy and Barbara Muschietti told The Hollywood Reporter (spoilers contained in that link). “We did two movies already. One thing that we didn’t want was to — given that we’re using the same tone and the style as the movies — get people too familiar [with the story mechanics]. We really wanted to create a subversion to get people excited. It has to do also with raising the volume a little in terms of intensity and spectacle.”

As is almost always the case with HBO shows in recent years, the vast majority of Welcome to Derry’s 5.7 million viewers watched the show after its on-air premiere. Nielsen figures have the first airing of the show on HBO at just 334,000 viewers (which is itself up from the 214,000 for Task’s debut in September), meaning that about 94 percent of the total audience came from streaming on HBO Max and on-air replays at HBO.

Midsomer Murders on stage review | A killer debut for a classic drama

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

28 years after it first launched on our TV screens, Midsomer Murders makes a thrilling stage debut.

Retaining all the heart of the beloved TV show, writer and director Guy Unsworth welcomes you to the county of Midsomer with a brand-new look at the episode and book that started it all: The Killings at Badger’s Drift.

The play takes place when well-loved spinster Emily Simpson is found dead and her friend Lucy Bellringer refuses to accept it was an accident. DCI Tom Barnaby and Sergeant Gavin Troy are called in to investigate, uncovering a world of hidden passions, long-buried secrets and deadly rivalries.

Leading the cast is Daniel Casey, the original DS Gavin Troy, who has been promoted to DCI Tom Barnaby. In an interview with Radiotimes.com, Casey admitted feeling a little “daunted” and “a little bit trepidatious” about the role, but he takes on the mantel left by John Nettles with ease.

Casey brings a quiet authority and warmth in the part that helps to ground the play. He’s the calming presence in the manicured wilderness of Midsomer, giving the audience a steady guide throughout.

Surrounding him is an assortment of eclectic characters, all expertly played by a handful of supporting cast; most of whom are playing two or three roles. It was quite a surprise to realise how few actors there were when the show ended.

Daniel Casey (Barnaby), James Bradwell (Troy) & Rupert Sadler (Dennis Rainbird) in The Killings at Badger’s Drift. Manuel Harlan

Barnaby’s protégé, DS Troy, is now played by James Bradwell; delivering the same bad-driving and conclusion jumping fans of the show would be expecting. While the play is scattered with funny moments, Bradwell shows up for a lot of them; whether he’s the butt of the joke or simply being an over-eager detective, he offers up that touch of lightness the show is known for.

Casey told us in the run up that “if you’re a fan of the television series, you’re going to love the play”. As one of those said fans, it truly felt like I was watching an episode in action. The staging rolls between cottages to manors to murder scenes in seconds. It creates the feeling of escapism the TV show is known for. Accompanying this is a familiar score that brings tension and warmth throughout each scene, underscoring the mystery, the brutality and the quintessential English charm that its famous for.

More than anything, Midsomer Murders delivers exactly what theatre goers could hope for: a sharp, thoroughly entertaining whodunnit. It’s two hours of intrigue and charm that keeps you guessing until the very end. Just don’t be too confident you’ll solve it before DCI Barnaby.

A Ranking of the 19 Hottest Monsters in Movies and TV Shows

by jummy84 October 30, 2025

From brooding vampires to growling werewolves, reanimated heartbreakers to chaos-causing slashers, horror has gifted us some of the most unexpectedly sexy creatures in pop culture. Let’s get honest: Some of these characters could get it. These are the monsters who make us nervously check our phones… and maybe our closets. They’re scary, dangerous, and maybe just a little bit irresistible. Our hearts are beating fast, whether that’s from a little bit of desire or mostly fear, we’ll never know.

In the spirit of Halloween, Swooon has rounded up the hottest monsters across movies and TV, from the undead to the unhinged, the furry to the fanged. Some will haunt your dreams, some will make you laugh, and all of them are totally deserving (in some universe) of a swipe right.

Terms & Conditions’ Gets Black Friday Release Date

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

For years, Kahlil Joseph has been the most innovative and important filmmaker not working in feature films — a title that will officially be retired when his highly lauded “BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions” gets a 12-city theatrical release on November 28, 2025. That’s right, the film’s distributor, Rich Spirit, is announcing today — in a move that would make the film’s former distributor A24 blush — it will open the film, remixing Black history and culture, on Black Friday.

Rich Spirit’s press release makes clear that, like “BLKNWS” itself, releasing the film on the biggest shopping day of the year is both playful and deadly serious.

Taylor Sheridan Peter Berg

“The date ties the film’s release to global conversations about media, capitalism, and the Black archive amid renewed conversations about erasure, representation, and the rollback of civil rights,” per the official Rich Spirit press release. “BLKNWS on BLKFRDY arrives in theaters as both a cinematic and cultural event for audiences in targeted markets, aiming to subvert a day of commercial excess into a moment of Black collective reflection and cultural circulation. BLKNWS sells perspective.”

The 12 cities for theatrical release were chosen because they trace “a constellation of Black cultural capitals across the U.S., Canada, and Europe,” and include Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington DC, Houston, Philadelphia, Detroit, New York, Toronto, London, and Paris.

After initially being pulled from the Sundance 2025 lineup by the film’s original backers Participant — only to be rescheduled at the last minute to unceremoniously premiere at a 9 am screening — “BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions” has gone on to be properly feted at major festivals, including a prestigious Main Slate slot at last month’s New York Film Festival, along with Berlinale, BlackStar, Toronto, and London premieres. In addition to gaining glowing reviews (100 on Rotten Tomatoes, 87 on MetaCritic) and ardent admirers, Joseph’s feature debut won the FIPRESCI Award at Viennale 2025 and shared the Bruce Sinofsky Award in the Documentary Feature Competition at the Montclair Film Festival.

The late November release should place the film squarely in competition to make the Academy’s Best Feature Documentary shortlist — IndieWire has confirmed Rich Spirit will target nonfiction awards with the innovative film that incorporates a fictional Afrofuturistic storyline.

Joseph is not your typical first-time feature filmmaker, having made his name in the 2010s as the most vital music video director of his generation, creating an influential approach to images in his collaboration with the world’s most prominent musicians, and finding full expression in short form projects like the 2013 “Until the Quiet Comes,” for musician Flying Lotus, which won the Grand Jury Short Film Prize at the Sundance Film Festival; the 15-minute film about Compton in “good kid, m.A.A.d city” for Kendrick Lamar; as well as being the original visionary behind Beyoncé’ “Lemonade.”

‘BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions’

Joseph has never been interested in linear narratives, thinking of his work as more akin to how a musician approaches an album. Inspired by filmmakers like Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Terrence Malick (who Joseph worked for early in his career), Joseph prefers to use sound and music to evoke lyricism and complexity rather than rely on a traditional narrative. Following in the footsteps of one of his idols and mentors (and “BLKNWS” contributor) Arthur Jafa, the celebrated music video director gravitated more toward the art world than Hollywood, while also serving as the creative director of Underground Museum in LA, which was the passion project of Joseph’s late brother, artist Noah Davis.

“BLKNWS” was born out of the Underground Museum, initially dreamed up by Joseph and Ryan Coogler as an antidote to cable news during President Trump’s 2015 campaign. It was conceived as a continuous, curated broadcast, weaving news and social media clips, and cultural artifacts into a dynamic stream intended to reflect the richness of Black life.

On an upcoming episode of the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast, Joseph explained how “BLKNWS” grew out him increasingly watching YouTube in his free time.

“I assumed if I was [watching YouTube over television], everybody else was doing that too. And I got the sense too that people were excited about learning in a way that I don’t think the entertainment industry takes into account,” said Joseph on the podcast. “People want to learn stuff, that’s what YouTube is so exciting for. You can learn about anything, as much as you can watch music videos and content creators, most of the time, people are sharing knowledge and information, and not just opinions.”

Joseph brought on  editors Luke Lynch and Paul Rogers (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), and together they started downloading YouTube clips and cutting them together as they experimented in finding the turntable-esque remix language of the cinematic news experience. Early versions were showcased at the 2019 Venice Biennale and the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, as Joseph saw “BLKNWS” more as a platform and media company with the potential to reach beyond the world of art installation. While on the podcast, Joseph admitted he contemplated accepting venture capital investment offers to build out the media company, but when the pandemic hit, he decided first on an intermediary step, accepting A24’s offer to turn it into a feature film.

‘BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions’

While on the podcast, Joseph discussed the lengthy and unorthodox process of turning his project into a feature film, which included bringing artists, journalists, and thinkers aboard, including Jafa, Bradford Young, Onye Anyanwu, Saidiya Hartman, Kaneza Schaal, Garrett Bradley, Raven Jackson, Jomo Fray, Dionne Brand, Christina Sharpe, Kristen Adele Calhoun, Irvin Hunt, and Madebo Fatunde, alongside musican Klein (who wrote the score), and with Lynch and Rogers continuing to work alongside Joseph in the editing room.

Presumably, the extended time frame it took to complete “BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions” exasperated A24, which had announced a 2024 release date and quietly abandoned the project, leaving Joseph to finish it on his own. When Participant and Joseph parted ways at Sundance, Rich Spirit stepped in to rescue what is one of 2025’s most exciting and boundary-pushing releases.

The release marks the first major project from Rich Spirit, an independent film label dedicated to amplifying voices from the global diaspora. The studio previously co-released Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice” with Briarcliff Entertainment, helping rescue the controversial film from financiers who had abandoned the project and turn it into an awards contender.

To make sure you don’t miss Kahlil Joseph’s November 26 interview about “BLKNWS,” subscribe to the Toolkit podcast on Apple, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform.

Netflix Approves 10-for-1 Stock Split to Make Shares ‘More Accessible’

written by jummy84

Netflix‘s shares are about to become more affordable.

The streaming giant announced Thursday that its board approved a 10-for-1 forward stock split of Netflix common stock. “The purpose of the stock split is to reset the market price of the Company’s common stock to a range that will be more accessible to employees who participate in the Company’s stock option program,” Netflix said in announcing the plan.

Netflix stock closed at $1,089.00 per share Thursday, down about 1% on the day but up nearly 23% year to date. On the announcement of the 10-for-1 split, shares rose more than 3% in after-hours trading.

Each Netflix shareholder of record as of the close of trading on Monday, Nov. 10, 2025, will receive, after the close of trading on Friday, Nov. 14, 2025, nine additional shares for every share held on the record date. Trading is expected to begin on a split-adjusted basis at market open on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025.

Netflix said the split will be effected through an amendment to the company’s amended and restated certificate of incorporation.

Netflix most recently enacted a seven-for-one stock split that took effect July 14, 2015.

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Elaine Hendrix Shares Injury Update & Future In ABC Competition

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Elaine Hendrix was forced out of her appearance on Dancing with the Stars this past week due to an injury.

The Parent Trap alum and her partner, Alan Bersten, did not perform during the Halloween special following the incident. In a new video shared on social media, Hendrix gave an update on her health.

“I am starting pain management today,” Hendrix said in a post on Instagram. “I’m not dancing today, I’m not dancing tomorrow. We’ll be back at it Friday.”

As for her future in the ABC dancing competition, Hendrix said, “I’m just getting ready to be in that ballroom next Tuesday.”

Hendrix’s post on Instagram also included a message to fans and everyone who has reached out to her for their support following the injury.

“THANK YOU for every message, vote, and word of encouragement. We couldn’t do this without you,” read the caption of the post. “The hardest part of yesterday was not being able to show you just how incredible our piece could have been. Here’s my costume, hair, and the overall inspo we had planned for last night. The DWTS creative team is THE BEST!”

Hendrix seemingly has no intentions of leaving the competition as long as she is still able to perform. Although she did not dance in the latest show, Hendrix was still judged for the Argentine tango she performed during Tuesday’s rehearsal before she had to be carried off on a stretcher.

In a video she shared online from a hospital bed following the injury, Hendrix said, “Halloween is my favorite, and I’m devastated. I was beyond excited to share what we had worked so hard on, although you’ll see a version of it. With your support, I’ll be back in the ballroom next week. I want nothing more.”

The Hollywood Reporter pulls the curtain back one some of the unseen moments that broadcast cameras didn’t catch at Television City Studios during Tuesday night’s show.

Dancing With the Stars celebrated its long-running Halloween Night during Tuesday’s taping, where one couple was eliminated, one duo was crowned the 2025 “Dance Monster-thon” winner and another near-perfect score was dished out.

Cameras were there to catch each dance, judges’ comments and scores during the show as it aired on ABC and streamed on Disney+, but The Hollywood Reporter was inside Television City Studios to capture all the behind-the-scenes moments that you may have missed during Dancing With the Stars’ season 34 Halloween Night.

  • ‘DWTS’ Hype Man Chuck Dukas Kept the Audience Engaged

After being seated in the lead-up to the live show, the audience was introduced to Chuck, who later revealed his full name, Chuck Dukas. Ahead of the show and during each commercial break, Chuck broke down the ins and outs of what to expect from a DWTS taping, keeping everyone engaged and eager to win special giveaways.

He labeled each side of the set as the right and left sides of the room, encouraging opposing zones to be the loudest, proudest set of audience members in the studio. Those who impressed Chuck won a merch shirt, but the real treat of the night was his infectious, lively energy that most certainly kept the audience intrigued throughout the two-hour taping.

  • Audience Rules for When Cameras Are Up

“Rules” is a strict term, but yes, there’s a few things the DWTS crew asks of its audience members during the live show. First, as each segment of the episode returns from commercial break, spectators seated in the lower-level seats are asked to stand up and applaud. The audience is encouraged to clap and cheer as loudly as they can during each lead-in, and they’re even asked to stand on their feet and clap for roughly three minutes at the very beginning of each episode.

Something that cameras have caught over the years is not a phone in sight in the crowd — and THR can confirm, that’s intentional. Guests are instructed not to be on their cellular devices while cameras are up, but that rule fizzles out when the show cuts to commercial.

  • Production Moves Swiftly In-Between Dances to Keep the Show Moving Smoothly

The DWTS cast is always in the spotlight, but the true unsung heroes of the franchise are those who work behind the camera. The swiftness at which each production member working on the behind-the-scenes elements of the show moved should be studied. Whether it was transporting an uncountable amount of faux corn fields onto the stage for Andy Richter’s Paso Doble or literally dumping dirt onto Alix Earle and Val Chmerkovskiy before their near-perfect Tango, the crew did it all on Halloween Night, executing their tasks in just enough time to make sure the ballroom looked TV perfect by the time commercial break ended.

  • The Crowd Was Packed With Alix Earle Fans

With each commercial break came Chuck, ready to work the crowd and keep onlookers on the edge of their seats. The hype man took time to speak with plenty audience members, and there was a common theme amongst most who got a chance to get on the mic: they were fans of Alix Earle.

At one point, a woman speaking with Chuck explained that she was a mom from Utah, which led some to believe she might have been a fan of one of the Mormon Wives stars. But no — she was there cheering on Alix. During another moment, Chuck asked another fan who they were rooting for, to which they replied, “Alix Earle!” as she walked by, to which she jumped up and down after the viewer expressed their support.

  • Charli D’Amelio, Xochitl Gomez, Ashley Tisdale and ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ Cast Round Out a Star-Studded Crowd

The DWTS cameras always make sure to showcase the A-list talent in the ballroom, but it’s a different feeling when you’re in-studio and you look over to see the season 32 winner of the show seated a few chairs away from you. Most of the celebrities in the audience weren’t seated at the same time as the rest of the guests, and instead got settled in their chairs right before showtime.

On the left-hand side, beside the judges’ panel were most of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives cast, while on the right side sat season 31 winner Charli D’Amelio alongside a mini High School Musical reunion with Ashley Tisdale and Kenny Ortega. Xochitl Gomez was also sitting on the opposite side of the room, across from the Mormon Wives.

  • Emma Slater Does Yell During Her Dances

DWTS fans have long questioned whether Emma Slater is yelling at her partners during her performances on the show. Sometimes, it appears she’s talking mid-performance, and THR can confirm she is communicating something mid-dance. It’s likely a tactic for Emma to count her partners through or give choreography signals during each dance, but fans were right: Emma certainly does audibly speak throughout each dance.

  • The Ballroom Was on Their Feet for Elaine Hendrix

Elaine Hendrix suffered an injury during rehearsal that sent her to the hospital on Tuesday, preventing her from being present at Halloween Night. The judges ultimately scored her based on footage of her Argentine Tango from rehearsals. After the number was shown, the audience rose to their feet and gave Elaine a standing ovation.

It was a devastating moment when the hosts revealed that The Parent Trap actress wasn’t in the ballroom, and it was heartbreaking to also see Alan Bersten solo for the night, with his spirits clearly down. However, that did not slow down the support the crowd showed for Elaine and sent her on her way for a hopefully speedy recovery.

  • One Audience Member Skipped Class to Attend the Show

Making his rounds with the audience, Chuck came across one DWTS audience member who revealed they skipped class to attend the live show. It was a hilarious moment in the studio that Chuck went on to reference throughout the night jokingly, and he even suggested that when the cameras returned from commercial break, they be centered in on the mystery school-skipper.

  • Jen Affleck’s Crew Goes Crazy!

There was no mistaking Jen Affleck’s supporters in the crowd, who were notably dressed for the Halloween Night occasion. Jen’s husband, Zac Affleck, and the rest of her hype squad wore blonde wigs, white dresses and ice blue trench coats, matching that of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ first season trailer. It was a homage to the reality series that landed Jen a spot on DWTS, and there’s no denying the audible encouragement her friends and family offered her throughout the night.

The fake Mormon Wives cast cheered each time Jen and her dance partner, Jan Ravnik, entered the stage, most notably when they arrived for the dance marathon. Their applause was met by Jen, who encouraged them to keep cheering, which trickled over to the rest of the right side of the crowd. Jen Affleck’s crew certainly brought the energy that translated into quite a lively “Dance Monster-thon.”

  • The Dance Marathon Was Electric — and the Audience Booed as Couples Were Eliminated

The dance marathon was an exhilarating experience to witness live. The television stream could cut to different couples at different moments in their routines, but in-the-flesh, it was hard to keep eyes on all the various duos dancing on the ballroom floor at the same time. But that’s not to say it wasn’t exceptionally entertaining. At one point, you could look up and see Alix swinging upside down from Val’s shoulders, cut just a few seconds later to Daniella Karagach being catapulted into the air by Dylan Efron.

The final few minutes when the remaining couples — Alix and Val; Whitney Leavitt and Mark Ballas; Jordan Chiles and Ezra Sosa; and Robert Irwin and Witney Carson — were even more intense. As the contestants broke out of their limited boxes after the first half of the dance marathon, cameras did, in fact, miss Jordan tumbling across the ballroom floor. The telecast chose to highlight Dylan and Daniella’s elimination from the marathon, but the audience certainly felt the impact of her incredible stunt.

Plus, the audience booed when couples were kicked out of the dance marathon. There wasn’t one couple in particular that the crowd had an affinity toward, and despite online uproar over Whitney and Mark winning the special segment, guests didn’t indicate that they disagreed with the judge’s decision.

  • Two Guests Won VIP Tickets to the ‘DWTS’ Season 34 Finale

As Halloween Night came to an end, Chuck teased that he had a big surprise for the most energetic fan in the audience. He later revealed that the supporter would secure two VIP tickets to the season 34 finale, which went to a woman seated in the balcony.

  • The Audience Sang “Happy Birthday” to Andy Richter

Finally, at the very end of the night, following Jen and Jan’s elimination, Andy Richter’s fans sang “Happy Birthday” to commemorate his 59th birthday. It was a sweet moment that further exemplified how avid his fanbase — deemed the “Fandy’s” — truly is.
