Glen Powell is missing Tom Cruise’s feedback on key new film element

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s well documented that Tom Cruise has acted as something of a mentor for Glen Powell after they starred together in Top Gun: Maverick back in 2022. But the Mission: Impossible star’s impact has never been quite so clear as in Edgar Wright’s new film The Running Man.

Powell takes on the lead role of Ben Richards – the character previously played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the earlier 1987 film of the same name – and, as the title suggests, he gets plenty of opportunities to showcase some top-tier movie-star running.

Powell previously revealed that he had called up Cruise for some advice about running on camera and ended up having an over two-hour conversation with him that included some very helpful tips.

“He said, ‘You should film yourself running because you don’t look as cool as you think you do,” the Twisters and Anyone But You star told People. “He was so right!”

With than in mind, we were curious to find out if Powell had received any feedback on his on-screen sprinting now that Cruise has seen the movie, and so we put that question to the star when we spoke to him and Wright for an exclusive RadioTimes.com interview.

“You know what? Tom loved the movie, but I haven’t talked to him about my running form,” was his response. “I’ll get back to you on that one. I’m so desperate for his approval on the running!”

Read more:

“He’d be like in Strictly Ballroom at the end, you know like holding up the cards [with scores],” added Wright, making Powell chuckle.

Whatever he thinks about the running specifically, Cruise was clearly impressed with Powell’s performance and the film on the whole, with the Hollywood legend lavishing praise on the movie on social media after attending it’s London premiere last week.

“Another great night out with my friends at the movies!” he wrote. “You guys crushed it, congratulations! I laughed, was on the edge of my seat and ate way too much popcorn.”

The film is the second big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel – which the prolific writer published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman – following the aforementioned Schwarzenegger version, although this one adopts a different tone and is far more faithful to the source material.
The Running Man is released in UK cinemas on Wednesday 12th November.

TV’s Biggest (Fictional) Jerk, ‘Abbott’ Off Campus, ‘Boston Blue’ & More

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Welcome to the Q&A with TV critic — also known to some TV fans as their “TV therapist” — Matt Roush, who’ll try to address whatever you love, loathe, are confused or frustrated or thrilled by in today’s vast TV landscape. (We know background music is too loud, it’s the most frequent complaint, but there’s always closed-captioning. Check out this story for more tips.)

One caution: This is a spoiler-free zone, so we won’t be addressing upcoming storylines here unless it’s already common knowledge. Please send your questions and comments to [email protected]. Look for Ask Matt columns on most Tuesdays.

The Guy You Love to Hate

Comment: I haven’t finished watching Peacock‘s All Her Fault yet. I’m five episodes in, but I feel compelled to say how much I love watching Jake Lacy. He seems born to play total jackasses, and no one does it better. I kind of feel sorry for him, that so many viewers might assume he is detestable like all his characters. Maybe he is, I have no way of knowing. For myself, usually I just feel cringe when someone is always being like that, but somehow, I keep wanting more Jake Lacy. — D.P.

Matt Roush: Boy, that White Lotus stink still clings to Jake Lacy, doesn’t it? It’s an interesting, and in this case amusing, topic, because typecasting can be a trap for some actors, and I imagine when casting directors see a description of someone as “handsome yet kind of slimy,” they may think of Lacy first because of his standout roles on The White Lotus, A Friend of the Family (as a creepy serial abductor) and Apples Never Fall (as a venture capitalist, which is almost always shorthand for dubious character). I urge you to check him out in a more heroic role — say, as the defendant in the most recent film version of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. But essentially, I agree. He’s great at playing jerks, and I knew a major shoe would eventually drop regarding his All Her Fault character of the husband with a hero complex and a major Achilles heel. (I didn’t get past the fifth episode’s reveal yet myself. I had other things to watch and find it harder to devote eight hours to these overlong streaming series about deeply unpleasant people. A few more are on the horizon later this week.)

I’ll end this discussion by suggesting that Jake Lacy can’t possibly be as awful as the characters he plays. Given how in demand he appears to be, he must be fun to work with, or he wouldn’t keep getting the kind of juicy roles many actors would kill to play.

School’s Out a Lot on Abbott Elementary

Question: Is it fair to say that there has been less of Abbott Elementary on Abbott Elementary this season so far?  I don’t mean this to sound like a complaint because the show is still consistently funny, engaging, and making great use of its talented ensemble. But it seems like we’ve seen very little of the teachers at the school. The premiere was a development day with no students. The third episode was the ballgame. The fourth episode primarily focused on the BMV and Gregory’s game night. And then the teachers took students out of school on a camping trip. None of these episodes have been subpar. But it does seem bizarre to have so many episodes in a row that really aren’t focusing much on the day-to-day at Abbott itself. The only episode to do that early on was when Melissa’s students cheated and Tariq sought special attention for his “son” in Janine’s class. I do like that they have expanded the world of the show and that we can see the characters more outside the classroom. But the show is still called Abbott Elementary, so it feels unusual to go for a long stretch without actually experiencing a school day. What do you think? — Jake

Matt Roush: Since receiving this commentary, Abbott aired one of its best episodes of the season last week, involving a “No Phones” day at the school where the staff flipped out much more over being deprived of their devices than the students. This is a fair comment, but it got me thinking that when Abbott strays too far and for too long outside the school’s walls, it magnifies and calls too much attention to the high concept of the mockumentary approach. In those moments, I can’t help but wonder why the camera crew (which apparently never sleeps) would follow these teachers at home for a game night or on a camping trip (which became especially noticeable when one of the camera operators got spooked and ran off, leaving Jacob alone for a change). I tend to prefer the workplace storylines on these and other shows using the same format, but it’s only natural as a show goes on for multiple seasons that they’ll want to shake up the formula from time to time.

A Death in the Family

Question: I’ve been enjoying Boston Blue, and I’ve noticed that when they mention Ben Silver (the family’s deceased husband/dad), they don’t mention his killer. Just that he was murdered. Will this be a mystery for the show? Finding out who killed him? Or am I just overthinking the show? — Caroline

Matt Roush: I’ll use this as an opportunity to remind readers that this isn’t a spoiler column, and I won’t speculate or comment on storylines that haven’t happened yet unless it’s already widespread knowledge. But my reading of Boston Blue in its current early stages is that this tragedy in the Silver family took place publicly on the courthouse steps, so maybe it isn’t a whodunit, although the implications of why Judge Silver was targeted could become a story thread as the show continues. I’m mostly impressed at how the family continues to honor his memory a year later and how it affects their ongoing faith journey.

The High Cost of Streaming

Question: I’ve watched Married at First Sight since the beginning of the series. I accidentally discovered it’s now on Peacock. So I subscribed to Peacock. But paying for a streaming service isn’t enough. You have to get the premium version! What’s going on? How has this affected their viewership? Companies are greedy! I’m so mad. — Gerri L.

Matt Roush: I wasn’t aware that Peacock still made that basic tier available for subscribers, but upon checking it out, they make it pretty clear what is and isn’t included. The basic tier seems to be intended for cord-cutters who primarily want access to NBC and the company’s related cable programming and their libraries. Anything exclusive and original to streaming, including movies, is only available on the Premium tier, which is less expensive with ads. And Peacock is now bundling with Apple TV (my favorite streamer), another sign that the streaming industry is adjusting and adapting to consumer frustrations. But the bottom line is the bottom line, and these are businesses, and when they invest in acquiring a show like Married, the intent is to drive subscriptions even at the cost of reducing the show’s availability and reach.

What’s in a Name?

Question: Since the beginning of the series, Elsbeth has had Captain Wagner as a core character. Then, this season, High Potential adds a new captain character and also names him Captain Wagner. Has Hollywood run out of names??? I find it quite odd — especially since Elsbeth is a highly rated show and many viewers would be watching both series. — Dawn J.

Matt Roush: High Potential is also a hit, and this is just one of those aggravating coincidences that remind us that most TV creators are too busy in their own world to notice what their neighbors are doing. There’s no doubt Elsbeth got there first, but these shows are on different networks and come from different studios, so it’s pretty clear that no one was paying attention or, possibly, caring.

And Finally …

Question: I enjoy revisiting favorite series on Start TV, such as The Closer, Major Crimes, In Plain Sight, Cold Case, Saving Grace, Rizzoli and Isles, Crossing Jordan, and Strong Medicine, the latter of which recently returned to the lineup, but not only are some episodes never shown, but some are shown out of order. Is this by choice? Are some episodes not rerun due to ethical, moral, or topical issues in today’s world that weren’t as prevalent when the series was new? Or is it a monetary business conflict, as in the delay of China Beach being released on DVD due to issues with the soundtrack? Missing episodes can cause confusion in the recurring characters’ storylines.  I still enjoy revisiting these series, but am disappointed when some episodes aren’t shown. I’m hoping your vast knowledge of the industry may provide an answer. — Adrienne, Vernon, N.J.

Matt Roush: I’m afraid my “vast knowledge” runs out when a show enters the chaotic world of cable syndication. As I often say, it’s challenging enough keeping up with first-run TV anymore. There are many possible reasons for these omissions, including copyright or other issues for an episode to be removed from the licensing package, or even carelessness on the part of the channel’s programmers, although the episode order is hardly a mystery. You might want to reach out and call this to their attention if it continues.

That’s all for now. We can’t do this without your participation, so please keep sending questions and comments about TV to [email protected]. (Please include a first name with your question.)

Initiative Wants to Turn Indie Filmmakers Into Awards Contenders

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

For smaller independent films, running an awards campaign can be a pipe dream; it’s just too expensive to consider. Picture Motion’s new “To Be Seen: Awards Impact Initiative” is betting it can level the playing field.

Social impact marketing agency Picture Motion launched the initiative with backing from Pop Culture Collaborative, a philanthropic fund that resources storytellers working to transform narratives around people of color, immigrants, refugees, Muslims, and Indigenous peoples. The initiative provides marketing support for films from underrepresented filmmakers, casts, and talent during awards season, helping these films reach voters, tastemakers, and audiences who decide which movies earn recognition.

Joachim Trier at the 'Sentimental Value' Los Angeles premiere held at the DGA Theater Los Angeles, California.

Two Films Leading the Charge

This year’s inaugural cohort features two acclaimed films: the narrative feature “Bob Trevino Likes It” and the documentary “Speak.”

The To Be Seen initiative will deliver custom impact campaigns for both films, including high-profile FYC screenings in New York and Los Angeles, press outreach, and digital storytelling to engage voters and audiences. To expand visibility, Picture Motion is collaborating with Seed&Spark on crowdfunding campaigns for both films. The initiative will also work with clipping platform Litebeem to drive social media clips.

“Bob Trevino Likes It,” directed by Tracie Laymon and starring Barbie Ferreira, John Leguizamo, French Stewart, and Lauren “Lolo” Spencer, tells the story of a lonely twenty-something who finds unexpected connection through an online friendship. The film has racked up 30+ festival awards, including 13 Audience Awards, and secured theatrical distribution through Roadside Attractions, Photon Films, and Cinépolis Distribución in Mexico and international markets. It’s currently streaming on Hulu.

“It means the world to us to receive this honor and invaluable support from Picture Motion,” said director Tracie Laymon. “Our values and mission as filmmakers are fully aligned with theirs, and we’re excited to see what we can do together in raising awareness for our film ‘Bob Trevino Likes It’ this award season.”

“Speak,” directed by Jennifer Tiexiera and Guy Mossman, follows ambitious teen orators chasing glory on the global public speaking stage. The documentary premiered in U.S. theaters in early December and has collected major honors including the Grand Prize at Shine Global’s Resilience Awards and the Kathleen Bryan Edwards Award at the Nantucket Film Festival. It’s also won awards from DC Environmental Film Festival, Oxford Film Festival, and the Ridgefield Independent Film Festival.

Why This Matters

Oscar campaigns mean parties, consultants, advertisements, and other exercises that carry steep price tags. That reality was highlighted in 2023 when Andrea Riseborough earned an unexpected Oscar nomination for the small indie film “To Leslie” after celebrities like Charlize Theron, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kate Winslet hosted screenings and flooded social media with support for her performance. The campaign prompted an Academy investigation into whether any rules were violated, but it also sparked a conversation about how the system favors well-funded studios over smaller productions.

“By leveraging the intersection of culture, advocacy, and awards strategy, To Be Seen builds on Picture Motion’s decade-long legacy of using storytelling to drive social impact — ensuring that filmmakers from underrepresented backgrounds have the resources, visibility, and reach to thrive,” said Bridgit Antoinette Evans, CEO of Pop Culture Collaborative.

“The To Be Seen Initiative is about more than just getting these films on voters’ radars,” said Brian Walker, CEO of Picture Motion. “It’s about amplifying stories that will have a lasting cultural impact, stories from diverse voices that have historically been overlooked. This initiative ensures that films like ‘Bob Trevino Likes It’ and ‘Speak’ are seen, heard, and celebrated in a meaningful way.”

BBC Resigning Director General on Trump Scandal: ‘Fight for Journalism’

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Outgoing BBC director general Tim Davie, who resigned on Sunday amid a scandal over documentary program “Panorama’s” editing of Donald Trump‘s Jan. 6 speech, addressed his staff at the broadcaster’s headquarters on Tuesday.

According to BBC News, Davie acknowledged during a 40-minute town hall alongside chair Samir Shah that “we did make a mistake” in the editing of Trump’s speech, but told staff: “I think we’ve got to fight for our journalism.”

He gave three reasons for his departure, including the scandal over the “Panorama” documentary on Trump as well as the BBC’s upcoming charter renewal in 2027 and the “relentless” nature of the role. He insisted that the BBC will “survive” his departure and said several times that he is “fiercely proud of this organization.”

A timeline for Davie’s departure was not given, but Shah said the BBC board was in “succession mode.” Davie said he has “no regrets” about his time at the BBC and “wouldn’t change a thing.” He did not address Trump’s $1 billion legal threat to the BBC, but said political pressures were “challenging.”

On Monday, Trump sent a letter to the broadcaster threatening to sue for $1 billion unless the episode of “Panorama” was retracted, he received a formal apology and payment to “appropriately compensate President Trump for the harm caused.”

Controversy erupted over the weekend after a leaked memo from former BBC Editorial Guidelines and Standards committee adviser Michael Prescott was published by The Telegraph suggesting that “Panorama” edited a Trump speech to make it sound like he encouraged the Jan. 6 riots. It resulted in the shocking resignations of both Davie and CEO of news Deborah Turness on Sunday night.

Prescott’s memo said “Panorama” edited Trump’s speech to be: “We’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be with you and we fight. We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not gonna have a country anymore.” Prescott wrote that Trump said the part beginning with “and we fight” 54 minutes after “we’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be with you.”

On Monday, BBC chair Samir Shah  apologized for the edit in a letter to the U.K. culture, media and sport committee and called it an “error of judgement.” Speaking with the BBC’s Katie Razzall following the letter’s publication, Shah said that he has been in contact with Trump’s team and is considering personally apologizing to the president.

The BBC has been flanked by several other controversies this year, including a Gaza documentary that was found to be a “serious breach” of Ofcom’s broadcasting rules and its handling of controversy at Glastonbury Festival when it aired the punk duo Bob Vylan chanting “death to the IDF.”

Davie and Turness’ departure timeline and who exactly will replace them remains unclear.

Royal Television Society CEO Theresa Wise To Retire Next Year

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Theresa Wise, the long-serving CEO of the Royal Television Society (RTS), will retire in 2026.

She has been in charge of the influential British TV organisation for well over a decade. “After almost 13 unforgettable years as CEO of the Royal Television Society, I have made the decision to retire from full time work,” said Wise.

A process to find her successor has begun for Wise, who is known as a staunch champion of the RTS’s work and for its place in British broadcasting.

“The RTS is a unique and vital part of the UK’s world-leading television and streaming media landscape and I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved over the past few years,” said Wise. “Our educational programmes are stronger than ever, our members are very engaged, our events programme continues to set the gold standard across the industry, the national and regional centres are thriving and the team at the RTS is world class.”

All3Media CEO Jane Turton, who is Chair of the RTS, said: “Theresa has made a huge and lasting contribution to the RTS. Her dynamism, passion, and commitment have been amazing. It has been a pleasure working with her as she has grown and developed the Society, launching new initiatives like the Mini MBA, strengthening the Bursary Scheme and constantly innovating and delivering the highest quality across all of the RTS activities. On behalf of the Board and everyone at the RTS, I would like to thank Theresa for a brilliant contribution to the Society.”

News of Wise’s exit comes in a dramatic week for British TV following the scandal over a doctored Donald Trump speech that led to the exits of BBC Director General Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness.

With Channel 4 also seeking a CEO, change is coming thick and fast in the UK.

Superman Spinoff TV Show to Star Skyler Gisondo

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, who created the award-winning mockumentary American Vandal, are going into the DC Universe.

The duo will write, executive produce and showrun the Superman movie TV spinoff to star Skyler Gisondo, the actor who played Daily Planet photographer and unlikely ladies’ man Jimmy Olsen.

Gisondo and the character became a true breakout from James Gunn’s summer movie, and a show was put into development around him. The concept centers on Olsen, as well as other Daily Planet reporters (minus Lois Lane and Clark Kent), who tackle cases involving super-powered villains.

Gorilla Grodd would be in the spotlight for the season.  Grodd is a super-intelligent evil ape who rules a secret African city named Gorilla City. The character is a key antagonist for the Flash, and first appeared in an issue of the Scarlet Speedster’s comics back in 1959. He was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino.

Gunn and his DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran will executive produce. Galen Vaisman is overseeing for DC.

Perrault and Yacenda running the show tips off the tone of the series. The comedy writing duo got a big break with American Vandal, which parodied true-crime series but with a story about an investigation into who and why someone vandalized a school parking lot with phallic images. The show earned a Peabody Award as well as an Emmy nomination.

The duo also created Players, a mockumentary of sports documentaries that streamed on Paramount+. Perrault additionally wrote Universal’s R-rated talking dog movie Strays, while Yacenda directed episodes of the Glenn Powell show Chad Powers.

When Gavin Met Stacey details how a party brought about the finale

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

This month’s Radio Times Book Club, sponsored by Dr. Oetker Ristorante, pick tells the story of one of Britain’s best-loved comedies, in a series of conversations between its co-creators James Corden (Smithy) and Ruth Jones (Nessa).

In this excerpt, they discuss how last Christmas’s finale – watched by more than 20 million people — came to be…

James: I’d always thought we should do another one. By the end of series three we had ten million viewers. And it just felt like the show wasn’t going away. People would keep saying, “Go on, do another one”.

Ruth: It was Mexico that clinched it.

James: It was my 40th [in 2018] and my wife, Jules, organised a birthday weekend in Mexico. She flew in my oldest school friend, Sheddy, and she had friends from all over the world fly in. But it was all a massive surprise.

Ruth: Julia messaged me and asked, “Would you consider coming to Mexico for it?” And it was strange, because you and I hadn’t really been massively in touch. In fact, I think the last time we’d seen each other was the previous Christmas, when you came over from LA and were staying in a hotel in London, and I remember going there to see you, and being very polite in front of you. Because at that stage you’d so gone into the stratosphere, fame-wise.

And I think that disparity is difficult for people sometimes. So Mexico was really key, because then we spent time talking about what a new Gavin & Stacey episode would be. [Before that] I just didn’t want to go back there at all. And I think you did. Then in Mexico we all had to hide away. We knew that you were going to be inside this villa thing, and we all had to gather outside and put sombreros on. One by one, people had to go in.

James: Yes, suddenly this mariachi band strikes up, and all these people come in. John Bishop’s there, and all these people I know are marching in wearing sombreros. Then someone opens my laptop, and Tom Cruise is on it, telling me that my mate Sheddy is here, and then he walks in, and then Jules goes, “There’s one more person here…” And you walked in, and I was unbelievably happy to see you.

When Gavin Met Stacey.

Ruth: It was so emotional. And it’s really weird, because I don’t think I always appreciate how much you love me. And partly I was thinking, “Surely he’ll be more excited about seeing John Bishop, or someone?” But I walked in and you literally burst into tears. I was kind of shocked that it meant so much to you.

James: It was amazing. We had the best weekend. And because we’d always laughed about the fact that you had sung Wild Thing at your own wedding, we went to this restaurant and there was a band, and you got up and sang Wild Thing.

Ruth: It was just something I decided to do on the spot. I knew the only way I would get away with it was to absolutely, completely give it my all. And not think about the fact that there were professional singers there. I mean, Harry Styles was there, for God’s sake – he looked a bit in shock. I don’t know if it was in a good way or bad.

James: Yeah, it was an amazing time. And at some point during that birthday weekend, I said to you, “Do you want to think about doing more Gavin & Stacey? You know, I think it might be time.”

Ruth: Yeah, we had that conversation sitting by the pool during the day. It wasn’t like a drunken sudden decision or anything. It had been mentioned over the years so many times and while I said I wasn’t keen to do it, there were times when I did think about it, because I remember I used to make notes and write down my thoughts about what could happen if we did do a new episode.

And we used to text each other ideas and things like that as well. So it just felt, because now we’d finally come together after this period of not really being in touch, maybe that made it feel more concrete. I came away from the Mexico trip thinking, “Right let’s do this…”

Niall Horan Uses Mic Drop on DEK of Hearts in Knockout Rounds

by jummy84 November 11, 2025
written by jummy84

What To Know

  • The Knockout Rounds continued on the Monday, November 10, episode of The Voice.
  • The coaches had no Saves or Steals in this round, so they all had to make tough cuts.
  • Niall Horan used his Mic Drop on one act who impressed him the most.

The Monday, November 10, episode of The Voice featured Night 3 of the Knockout Rounds, with coaches pairing their remaining eight artists up for head-to-head song battles. Each contestant performed a song of their choice before their coach eliminated one of them, with no Saves or Steals left in play.

Three coaches still had their Mic Drops to use, putting one artist from their team in the running to perform at the Rose Parade. Once all four Mic Drops are used, viewers will get to vote on their favorite, and the winner will earn the special performance.

Scroll down for a recap of the night’s performances and to find out who the coaches chose for their teams, as well as a roundup of where all the teams stand so far.

Ryan Mitchell vs. Conrad Khalil (Team Reba)

Reba McEntire‘s artists Ryan Mitchell and Conrad Khalil were up first. Conrad was a one-chair turn in the Blind Auditions, while Ryan had no chairs turn around and is only in the competition thanks to Carson Daly‘s Callback ticket.

Griffin Nagel/NBC

Conrad performed “Closer” by NeYo, and Ryan sang “Zombie,” both of which impressed the coaches. “Conrad, you had all the runs, you have great range, you have a really gorgeous tone,” Michael Bublé said. “Ryan has come back and exceeded everyone’s expectations. You have the ability to interpret songs better than anyone else did.”

Bublé said he would lean towards Ryan if the decision was up to him. Snoop pointed out, “If you want that rock alternative, it’s Ryan. But if you want that R&B, then it’s Conrad.”

McEntire had to make the ultimate decision, and she went with Ryan, noting his ability to connect to the song because of his struggles with alcohol. “Ryan is different than anybody in this competition,” she admitted. ‘We don’t get that much alternative rock on the show, so to have Ryan fill that void is perfect.”

Marty O’Reilly vs. Rob Cole (Team Bublé)

Team Bublé’s first pairing of the night was Marty O’Reilly vs. Rob Cole, who sang “The Letter” by Joe Cocker and “Wondering Why” by Red Clay Strays, respectively.

Marty O'Reilly and Rob cole

Griffin Nagel/NBC

“Marty, man, the way you sing, the way you howl and growl, ain’t nothing but a dog in you. I love that,” Snoop Dogg said. “You could win The Voice. You were that good. Rob Cole, the way you started on that piano and stood up and went to a whole other level, that’s superstar level.”

Niall Horan praised Rob for telling the story “so well,” and said Marty was “captivating” to watch. Bublé picked Rob as the winner, adding, “Rob has a voice that I could listen to all day. It’s so distinct and unique that it could only be Rob. I really feel like Rob could be the winner of The Voice. I can’t wait to see what’s next.”

Trinity vs. Jack Austin (Team Bublé)

Trinity and Jack Austin also went head-to-head on Team Bublé.

Jack Austin, Trinity

Griffin Nagel/NBC

Trinity was the winner of the battle after her rendition of Whitney Houston‘s “I’m Your Baby Tonight.”

“She has the ability to play within the realm of R&B and pop. She looks like a star, sounds like a star, and she is a star,” her coach raved.

DEK of Hearts vs. Kayleigh Clark (Team Niall)

The final Knockout of the night was between the trio, DEK of Hearts, and country singer Kayleigh Clark. DEK of Hearts sang “What If I Never Get Over You” by Lady A, while Kayleigh performed “Blue” by LeAnn Rimes and even yodeled in the performance.

DEK of Hearts and Kayleigh Clark

Griffin Nagel/NBC

McEntire called Kayleigh’s performance “wonderful” and said her yodels were “perfect.” She also praised DEK of Hearts’ harmonies and said she would pick them as the winner.

Horan had a tough decision to make. “I think this is what it looks like when two four-chair turns get into a Knockout together,” he said. “Kayleigh, you just came out of the block strong. When we had Joe Walsh in, he was asking you to commit with breath and you took all of his notes, all of my notes, on board and just smashed it. DEK, that wall of sound that you make is just so beautiful. There’s not many vocal groups out here these days where all three can sing.”

DEK of Hearts were declared the winners. “Kayleigh is an incredibly talented singer, I just have a feeling about DEK,” Horan shared. “They bring something to the show and to music that makes me excited. When they sing together, it’s special.” In fact, he loved the performance so much that he gave DEK of Hearts his Mic Drop, putting them in the running to sing at the Rose Parade.

Below, see how the teams are stacking up in the Knockout Rounds so far (artists who were Saved or Stolen in the Battles are noted in parentheses). By the end of the Knockouts, each coach will have four artists on their teams.

In a weekend in which “Predator: Badlands” was far and away the top movie in America, bringing in $40 million domestic (when it was projected for just over half that), the bigger box office conversation on social media this weekend centered around a film that didn’t even crack the domestic Top 10.

That movie was the Sydney Sweeney boxing biopic “Christy,” which debuted to just $1.3 million. That is a bad number in most ways you might want to spin it, but there was one narrative that really took hold that’s easy to fight back. On Sunday, Twitter user Jonathan observed that it’s one of the worst openings for a movie that debuted on over 2,000 screens ever. To find that stat, you’ll need to scroll to the bottom of the All Time Records tab on Box Office Mojo and look at this chart, and you’ll see “Christy” ranks No. 12.

Joachim Trier at the 'Sentimental Value' Los Angeles premiere held at the DGA Theater Los Angeles, California.

The assertion went viral, bolstered by the ongoing controversy about the recent American Eagle ad featuring Sweeney’s “Great Jeans.” What’s more, Sweeney has had two other movies that fizzle at the box office this year: the Lionsgate crime movie “Americana” and Ron Howard’s “Eden,” in which she’s part of an ensemble and not the main star. It’s a big shift after Sweeney bolstered the surprise box office of films like “Anyone but You” and “Immaculate.”

Black Bear, which is a brand-new distributor that made “Christy” its very first release, both financed and distributed “Christy” and is doing so for a responsible budget of $15 million. It will take a hit, but the distributor also sold the international rights to “Christy,” which can help to mitigate the box office losses.

But saying “Christy” had one of the worst openings ever based on the number of screens it played on is a weird, cherry-picked stat. Even if you were to switch tabs on that very chart and look at movies that opened on over 2,500 or 3,000 screens, you’ll see some other films, even some from this year, that opened in a similar ballpark as “Christy” and had worse per-screen-averages. And it’s nowhere to be found among the top titles if you filter to over 600 theaters, which Box Office Mojo still labels as “Wide.”

“It definitely does feel cherry-picked. What release date are we talking about? What’s the competition?,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore. “For films like this or ‘The Smashing Machine,’ they’re not going for box office, they’re going for artistic freedom and are character-driven films that are not trying to be blockbusters.”

Dergarabedian explains there are a litany of other factors that could’ve played into why “Christy” didn’t connect. Did the average moviegoer think Sweeney was unrecognizable when they saw the trailer? Do casual audiences even know who the film’s subject Christy Martin is? Could a movie like “Predator: Badlands” have sucked up all the oxygen for other new releases? Would it have performed better opening in the spring? Even a movie like “Die My Love,” starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, was another starry, adult drama that only made $2.8 million from virtually as many screens. It’s hard out there for drearier movies for grown-ups.

You could make the case that “Christy” shouldn’t have opened on near as many screens as it did and instead went with a platform release in order to slowly build buzz. Dergarabedian points out that had “Christy” done just that, it wouldn’t be the first movie that died on the vine before it even had a chance to go wide. Distributors often grab additional screens because they can and because there’s a willingness from exhibitors to play them, which was the case here. The cost of a digital print is minimal compared to a film print. And if you’re a brand-new distributor like Black Bear, why not take a little added risk?

Sweeney too isn’t taking the disappointment to heart and, in a post on Instagram on Monday, said there are some more important things than box office.

“Thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. If ‘Christy’ gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” she wrote. “So yes, I am proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact,” Sweeney said. “And ‘Christy’ has been the most impactful project of my life.”

Jon Stewart Slams Democrats for Ending Government Shutdown

On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart came after Democrats for voting to end the government shutdown without extending subsidies for the Affordable Care Act, which is the primary issue the Left has fought for throughout the 41-day stoppage.

“They fucking caved on the shutdown,” Stewart said, fuming. “Not even a full week removed from the best election night results they’ve had in years, seven Democratic senators and an ‘Independent’ voted with their Republican counterparts to end the shutdown and reopen the government. And did they get their extended healthcare subsidies?”

Stewart turned to a sound bite from ABC 7 for the answer, “Democrats wanted the deal to include extending subsidies for the Affordable Care Act. Instead, they got a promise to vote on it at a later date.”

“I cannot fucking believe it,” Stewart continued. “You had the wind at your back! Election victories all over the country. The new Sydney Sweeney movie was box office bupkis! Apparently, her new MAGA fanbase didn’t show up in droves to see a biopic about a lesbian professional boxer who overcomes domestic violence to live her truth. Who could have seen that coming? Democrats, you sold out the entire shutdown not to get what you wanted, but for a promise to not get what you wanted later.”

The legislation to end the nation’s longest government shutdown in history passed in the Senate Monday night. However, it still needs to pass through the House and then get a signature from Donald Trump. With a Republican majority in the House, it is likely to pass, and Trump is expected to sign the bill with full support from the Right.
