Sony CEO Tom Rothman on Hollywood Execs Depiction in ‘The Studio’

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group CEO Tom Rothman knows what it takes to be a studio exec, and he called out the way people in the role are depicted in The Studio.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Hollywood satire series follows Matt Remick (Rogen), the new executive of Continental Studios who struggles to run the fictional company.

“In each one of those episodes, there is a kernel of brilliant, blinding truth, and that’s what makes great satire,” Rothman told Letterboxd in an interview published on Thursday. “The show is wonderfully satiric.”

While he was able to admire “that kernel,” Rothman said that “everything else is horseshit.” He continued, “Maybe some days, but most days we’re not morons.”

Despite his issues with the portrayal of studio execs, Rothman insisted he was able to view the Apple TV+ series “with the sense of humor intended.” In fact, he even referenced The Studio while giving a presentation in March.

“When I took the stage a few months ago at CinemaCon, I walked out and said, ‘Hi, everybody, I’m Seth Rogen!’ which was good for a laugh there,” he said, referring to Rogen’s character on the show. During the final two episodes of Season 1, Remick presented at the Las Vegas exhibitors’ conference.

Meanwhile, Rothman also said that The Studio accurately depicts Remick’s undying passion for cinema despite the persistent mistakes he’s made as an executive. “What it gets right is that there’s a fundamental truth of studio executives trying to do the right thing, and there being many, many obstacles to doing [so],” Rothman said. “The difference there is it depicts a great deal of moral compromise in pursuing that. That’s not really the way it is. Most people are people like me, who love movies, have a lot of integrity and are just trying to do the best we can.”

Season 1 of The Studio was critically acclaimed and nabbed 23 nominations at the 77th Emmy Awards. Additionally, the show made headlines for featuring an all-star cast of guest stars including Martin Scorsese, Ron Howard, Zoë Kravitz, Anthony Mackie and Dave Franco.

Following the Emmy nominations, Rogen and Goldberg spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about tying the record with The Bear for most comedy nominations in a season.

“I think I’m still in shock a little bit, but it’s very, very, very nice. It’s not something that has been a part of our career, really, in any way, shape or form,” Rogen said. “We’ve had a lovely career despite awards, and so the fact that at this age, there’s a whole new novelty and level of recognition that we’ve never gotten is very nice, and it’s surreal that it’s for something that is so Hollywood specific.”

Jennifer Affleck Talks Season 34, Competing Postpartum, More (Exclusive)

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Jennifer Affleck gave birth to her third child at the beginning of July. Less than two months later, she’s begun training for Season 34 of Dancing With the Stars. When the show premieres on September 16, she’ll be just 11 weeks postpartum.

But The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star is embracing the challenge and said she had “no” hesitation when asked to be on the show. “I am looking forward to the challenge and helping inspire other women [with] what our bodies are capable of,” Affleck tells TV Insider. “I ran a marathon a few weeks after our last baby, so I know my body can handle a lot. If anything, it will help me with postpartum depression and the baby blues. So I am grateful and looking forward to it.”

Affleck was one of the first four celebrities confirmed for the Season 34 cast ahead of the full reveal on September 3. She received the news that she’d been picked for the show during the Secret Lives of Mormon Wives Season 2 reunion in June. Her costar Whitney Leavitt was also announced as a cast member.

“By nature, I’m not a very competitive person,” Affleck admits. “So I’m excited to have [Leavitt] there to push me and have a friend to go through the journey with when it gets hard. Hopefully we are the final two!”

@whitneyleavitt WE READYYYYYYYYY @Dancing with the Stars #DWTS @Jen Affleck ♬ оригінальний звук – vlada

Scroll down for more from our interview with Affleck, including how husband Zac Affleck will support her through this journey and more.

Why did you want to do the show and what is the extent of your dance experience?

Jennifer Affleck: Growing up, dancing was more than just a fun hobby for me. It was how I communicated, connected, and expressed myself. My mom is from Ecuador and immigrated to the United States at 27. She primarily speaks Spanish, so growing up, we weren’t able to communicate very well. We connected through our love of music and dance, and because of that, this opportunity means a lot, not just to me, but to my entire family.

It’s been my dream to do Dancing with the Stars to share more of who I am and where I come from. I don’t have any formal dance training, just a lot of practice on my countertop doing TikToks!

How do you plan on navigating having a newborn and all the training?

It will take a village. I have a nanny, assistant, and Zac helping out full-time. It won’t be easy, but I have an entire team behind me supporting me in this dream of mine.

What style of dance do you think will be your best and what are you most nervous about?

Best style will be any Latin style-based dance, since I grew up learning a lot of those at family parties. I’m not nervous for any, just really excited to learn them all and become a more well-rounded dancer. If anything, my partner should be nervous for all the TikTok dances I will be teaching them!

What qualities are you looking for in your dance partner?

Someone who wants to win the Mirrorball! Just kidding, sort of. But someone who is willing to be patient with me as I learn and willing to work really hard. Also someone family orientated that understands what it’s like to have a family and how important that is to me.

What side of yourself do you think viewers will get to see on the show that maybe they haven’t before?

On Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, I don’t think the audience has been able to see the real Jen yet. You have seen many different emotions from me, but I am excited for everyone to finally get to see the fun, energetic, goofy side of me. It’s what I consider the real me.

How will your family and MomTok friends support you during this journey?

Everyone is so excited. In fact, I think Zac and my mom might be even more excited than me. Everyone knows this has been a dream of mine. So I can wait to have family and friends come to my performances and cheer me on in the audience!

Colin Farrell in Bad Netflix Thriller

Colin Farrell in Bad Netflix Thriller

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

A deep-pocketed neon-noir starring Colin Farrell as an inveterate gambling addict and see-thru fraud who has three days to fork up the $45,000 USD he owes to his Macau hotel and casino (lest he be deported back to England, or worse), Edward Berger’s “Ballad of a Small Player” sounds like a mighty decent bet on paper. And yet something is off from the moment it starts with Farrell’s Lord Doyle groaning “fuck” into the bathroom mirror, as if he’s just noticed it too.

The situation doesn’t need long to grow more ominous from there, as Volker Bertelmann’s thunderous string and horn score — squelching in your face like a wet fart throughout the course of a movie that’s meant to feel like a fever dream — accompanies the arch comedy of watching our protagonist try to slip out of his penthouse suite without getting caught. There’s a Coen brothers’-like smirk to Lord Doyle’s cartoon obviousness, but that doesn’t stop Berger from shooting the sequence like it’s straight out of “Conclave,” all straight lines and holy purpose.

The Wizard of the Kremlin

Anyone with eyes can see that Lord Doyle is an impostor (his green velvet suit screams “I’m bluffing!” loud enough for people to understand it in every language, which is extra silly for someone who exclusively plays a pure luck game like baccarat), but that isn’t enough for locals to notice a gweilo like him. In a place built on empty promises, a peninsula whose Eiffel Tower is a copy of a copy of the real one in Paris, he’s just another lie that doesn’t even have the heart to believe in itself.

The only problem there is that “Ballad of a Small Player” suffers from the same half-defeated identity crisis; much like our dear Doyle (or whatever his real name is), Berger’s film is so desperate for a win that it loses any real sense of what the stakes are. Despite promising a welcome throwback to the sort of down-and-out milieu that authors like Graham Greene once put on the map, this Lawrence Osborne adaptation winds up feeling like nothing so much as a quintessential Netflix movie: Easy to watch and impossible to care about.

I’ll say this in its favor: Watching Doyle eat a meal is possibly one of the most uncomfortable things I’ve ever seen on the big screen, and I would have to imagine that its horror will translate to small ones as well. The man is rapacious — a hungry ghost with a big mouth and an empty stomach. He shoves food into his maw like a human No-Face, and his entire body trembles while he does it, as if Doyle is trying to survive his acute gambling withdrawal by distracting his other senses. Every bite feels like his last, and yet he’s also convinced that a single lucky streak is all he needs to clear his debts. Alas, there are some debts that can’t be repaid. There are some stains that don’t wash out. There are some problems that money can’t solve.

One of them seems to be private investigator Cynthia Blithe (Tilda Swinton, splitting the difference between “Michael Clayton” and “Snowpiercer” with a pro forma performance memorable only for the glasses she gets to wear), who’s been hired to secure photographic evidence that Doyle is hiding out in Macau. More susceptible to money — or at least more understanding of why Doyle tries to buy his way out of everything — is an enigmatic Rainbow Casino employee named Dao Ming (Fala Chen), who watches the Englishman blow a fortune at her baccarat table only to be endeared by his lost soul sloppiness. Chen is the wraith-like heart of this story, but her character strains belief even in a shaky hand of a movie that operates with all the internal logic of a gambling addiction.

Then again, so does everything else in “Ballad of a Small Player,” which reshuffles its cards so often that you start to wonder if it’s playing with a full deck. Switching gears between heightened comedy, self-destructive bender, ex-pat farce, and an empty meditation on the relationship between capitalism and shame, Berger’s film doesn’t juggle genres so much as it careens out of control between them, its crumbling hero too narcissistic for anything to matter beyond the tunnel vision of his next line of credit.

Of course, Doyle is only looking for loans while he bides his time for a miracle, but it’s going to take something a bit more proactive than that in order to cleanse him of the sins that he’s been trying so hard to outrun, or at least out bet. “You can be anyone in Macau,” Doyle tells Cynthia as part of a sales pitch to leave him alone and “live a little,” but Doyle — who’s already faked his own death once — will have to become someone if he hopes to survive.

This movie tries its best to nudge him in the right direction, but the path it offers him to rock bottom — and to the redemption that lies beyond it — proves exasperating. It’s some consolation that Doyle travels along the scenic route, as James Friend’s ultra-wide cinematography allows the purgatorial casinos of Macau to look as sterile as the fluorescent streets outside are aglow with sizzle and seduction. Still, the film’s rich sense of place never catalyzes into a legitimate atmosphere, which makes it that much harder to reconcile the “fun” of Berger’s tone and the flustered charisma of Farrell’s performance with the soul rot on display.

“Ballad of a Small Player” mines so much of its queasy momentum from Lord Doyle’s relentless desperation and refusal to give up, but the movie doesn’t give us much of a reason not to throw in the towel. Doyle’s luck might turn before the end of this story — ours will not.

Grade: C

“Ballad of a Small Player” premiered at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival. Netflix will release it in select theaters on Friday, October 17, and on Netflix on Wednesday, October 29.

Jim Jarmusch Addresses Mubi’s Relationship With Sequoia Investment

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Jim Jarmusch was put on the spot about his feelings over distributor Mubi’s controversial ongoing relationship with Silicon Valley-based private equity firm Sequoia Capital at the press conference for his Venice Golden Lion contender Father Mother Sister Brother on Sunday.

The U.S. director is among hundreds of filmmakers to have signed an open letter calling on the company to hand back a $100 million investment from the investment firm due to its backing of a number of Israeli defence-tech start-ups.

Mubi has North America rights for Father Mother Sister Brother as well as in a number of other territories, while the company’s subsidiary The Match Factory has traditionally sold all of Jarmusch’s films.

The director said he had spoken to Mubi  about the issue and that the company’s partner and Chief Content Officer Jason Ropell had called him directly shortly after the letter was published.

“My relationship with Mubi was started much before that, and they were fantastic to work with on this film. I was, of course, disappointed and quite disconcerted by this relationship, and I think really, if you want to discuss it, you have to address Mubi about it. I’m not the spokesman,” he said.

“However, yes, I was concerned. I also have a distribution agreement with Mubi for certain territories, which I had entered into before my knowledge of this, but having said that, on a personal level, I have to say I’m an independent filmmaker, and I have taken money from various sources to be able to realize my films and I consider pretty much all corporate money is dirty money.”

“If you start analyzing each of these film companies and their financing structures, you’re going to find a lot of nasty dirt. So it’s all there. We could avoid it and not make films at all, but the films are what I choose to carry things I would like to say.”

Jarmusch added, however, that it was not fair to the onus on filmmakers to address the issue of Mubi’s sources of finance.

“The artists, it’s not us, it’s Mubi, you must address concerning this, and not just Mubi, but other companies as well,” he said.

In the original open letter, the signatories highlighted Sequoia Capital’s growing investments in Israeli military technology companies.

It cited Kela Technologies, which was founded in the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Southern Israel, in which more than 1,200 people were killed and 251 were taken hostage. Others referenced included military drone manufacturer, Neros, and the unmanned aerial vehicle manufacture, Mach Industries.

The filmmakers suggested these investments tied Mubi to the ongoing violence in Gaza, where more than 63,000 people have been killed in Israel’s retaliatory military campaign and mission to retrieve the remaining Israeli hostages.

The deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a hot button issue at this edition of the Venice Film Festival, which is unfolding six weeks shy of the second anniversary of the October 7 attacks.

Hundreds of protestors made up of largely of local political and grass-root groups, and a smattering of accredited festival guests, marched across the Venice Lido on Saturday in support of Palestine and to denounce Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza.

They were barred from entering the festival complex but after a brief stand-off turned around and peacefully dispersed.

Father Mother Sister Brother is constructed in the form of a triptych, the movie tells three stories exploring relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three chapters takes place in the present, and each in a different country.

Written and directed by Jarmusch it gathers a starry ensemble cast featuring Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Sarah Greene, Indya Moore, Luka Sabbat, and Françoise Lebrun.

The film is presented by Mubi, Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello and The Apartment (a Fremantle Company), in association with Jarmusch’s badjetlag and Gillibert’s CG Cinema, Cinema Inutile, Films du Losange and Weltkino.

‘Chad Powers’ Trailer Sees Glen Powell Go Undercover as a QB

by jummy84 August 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Glen Powell is unrecognizable in the first full-length trailer for his new Hulu comedy Chad Powers. Powell formally debuted the trailer Saturday on ESPN’s College GameDay.

Produced by former star NFL quarterbacks (and current ESPN personalities) Eli and Peyton Manning, Chad Powers sees Powell playing Russ Holliday, a hotshot quarterback who destroyed his playing career after making an unforgivable, vanity-driven mistake in a college football championship game.

Eight years later, he seeks redemption, under heavy makeup and prosthetics and under the pseudonym, Chad Powers.

“South Georgia is having open tryouts? I am going to do a Mrs. Doubtfire, but with football,” Powell says at one point in the trailer (below).

Chad Powers debuts on Hulu Sep. 30 with two episodes. New episodes will stream on Tuesdays for the subsequent four weeks.

The show can trace its origin to a sketch that starred Eli Manning in 2022, in which he put on prosthetics and attended an open tryout at Penn State, with a camera crew capturing the disbelief from other players and attendees.

Eli Manning and Powell spoke to The Hollywood Reporter for this week’s cover story about making the show.

“What made Eli’s thing so magical is the viewer knew Eli Manning was under [the disguise]. So, let’s use the lie at the center of this thing, which creates inherent fun conflict over the course of the series,” Powell told THR. “We were like, ‘OK, we’re going to Tootsie this thing. Let’s Mrs. Doubtfire it, and let’s see how far we can take this lie.’ “

EManning serves as executive producer along with Omaha Productions’ Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz, Ben Brown and ESPN’s Burke Magnus, Brian Lockhart, Kati Fernandez. Waldron and Adam Fasullo are executive producing for Anomaly Pictures. Luvh Rakhe will executive produce and Tony Yacenda will serve as director and executive producer. The series stars Powell, who is also co-creating, co-writing and executive producing under his production co-banner Barnstorm Productions.

Most recently, it was revealed that he has been keeping Mackenzie Boyd captive, after fans had worried that the character had been killed.

All this time, Aaron has been oblivious to his husband’s true nature, but next week, he will start to grow suspicious, so John will decide to drug him to keep him under control.

Aaron is in danger ITV

As reported by Digital Spy, Aaron star Danny Miller has said that “it’s time” for his character to start to find out the truth, “because a lot of people stop me in the streets and say things like, ‘how are you not spotting the signs?’ like I can’t spot the signs”.

He continued: “But I think love is blind, is what I’ve played for the last six months of watching John crumble under all this spotlight and pressure, and Aaron’s just kind of going, ‘I don’t know what you mean, he’s great! I love him!’

“So, it’s nice that Aaron can finally become one of the viewers, or that of an opinion of the viewers. They get to share in this hatred of John, which is just so strange to say because [John actor] Oliver Farnworth is the nicest man I’ve ever met and I don’t say that lightly! I just love him. He’s just been great.”

It has been reported that Farnworth will be departing from the soap imminently, and as both Aaron and Robert are starting to get closer to uncovering the truth, the net seems to be tightening around the character.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1. Stream on ITVX.

Ethan Hawke on ‘Blue Moon’ Interview: On Playing Lorenz Hart

Ethan Hawke wears many hats. The multi-hyphenate writer-director-actor returns to the Telluride Film Festival for a Tribute with Berlin prize-winner “Blue Moon” (SPC), in which he plays Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart. And Hawke is debuting his new documentary “Highway 99: A Double Album,” a two-parter devoted to the life and music of Merle Haggard, which will likely sell to a streamer as it hits the festival circuit. And showing at the Toronto International Film Festival is a new series debuting on FX September 23, “The Lowdown.” After all his recent efforts, Hawke, who has four Oscar nominations (three for collaborating with Richard Linklater), is ready to just talk. “I’m exhausted,” he said over breakfast in Telluride.

Ask E. Jean

Hawke has always loved music, and has learned a lot over the years from playing trumpeter Chet Baker (“Born to Be Blue”) and directing the music movies “Blaze” and “Seymour: An Introduction.” That one debuted at Telluride in 2014. “Seymour was my midlife crisis, right?” said Hawke. “It’s an old Shaker expression, but to master a craft, you have to apprentice three that surround it. My real mission is performance. That’s what I’ve done my whole life. That’s where the rubber meets the road. But learning about directing, learning about writing, learning about music, learning about these other things helps. It’s all connected.”

His two Telluride movies are united in that they’re both about songwriters, “two of the greatest American songwriters in the history of America,” he said. Lorenz Hart had partnered with Richard Rodgers on such American songbook faves as “Blue Moon” and “My Funny Valentine.” Hawke’s love for Merle Haggard was embedded from his youth. “For most of us, the music that our parents played is somewhere deep inside us forever.”

His dive into Haggard follows “The Last Movie Stars,” about Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, “my love letter to my own profession,” he said. “In thinking about what to do next, I love making documentaries, because it’s something you can work on slowly. When I was younger, I used to try to write prose, and I wrote some books because I needed a job to sustain the imbalance of an actor’s life. In the last few years, documentary has replaced that part of my life. Before I work on Larry Hart, I’m working on Merle Haggard. Then I take a break. I disappear for 8-10, weeks. I play Larry Hart, and then I come back into me again, and I’m talking about my childhood and my loves and things that are personal to me, and it helps keep me balanced.”

“Highway 99” is Hawke’s love letter to music. “I knew that whoever won the election, half the country was going to be despondent. Merle Haggard always wrote about people. He continued his whole life to never write from a left wing or right wing point of view, but from a humanist point of view. Country music is a place where men can express their feelings, where they often struggle, and it’s a really safe place to talk about what’s going on inside you.”

The two-part documentary digs into, among other things, the unrequited love story between Merle and Dolly Parton. And Hawke got to recruit some of his favorite singers to interpret Haggard’s songs. He asked them which songs they wanted to sing, and Nora Jones, Valerie June, Steve Rowe and others picked them. “I thought I could tell his life as a musical,” said Hawke. “I could use his own writing to tell his own story.”

“The Last Movie Stars”

When it came to his ninth collaboration with Richard Linklater, “Blue Moon,” Hawke’s music movies helped him to prepare for Larry Hart. “Things like studying jazz for Chet Baker, studying the piano with ‘Seymour,’” he said, “studying the pain of trying to be a songwriter through ‘Blaze.’”

The pain of Lorenz Hart comes through in this achingly sad story set at the end of Hart’s partnership with Rodgers (Andrew Scott). It all takes place at Sardi’s on the opening night of “Oklahoma!” — which Rodgers composed with Oscar Hammerstein II instead of Hart, sealing their split. “If you are feeling a lot of pain,” said Hawke, “there’s this idea that success or approval from others is going to quiet that pain or bandage it. But in the history of mankind, it never does. He’s heartbroken about Rodgers. He’s setting himself up, and he’s distracting himself that he’s in love with this young woman [Margaret Qualley], and he’s not even heterosexual. But he can’t deal with the real pain that’s happening. He can’t look at it for a second. That movie is about a man who died of heartbreak. The alcohol was part of his sadness, the pain was too great to suffer without it. Alcohol is a painkiller.”

The movie starts out with Hart walking out of “Oklahoma!” and ponying up to the bar at Sardi’s, where the bartender (Bobby Cannavale) tries to keep his drinking under control. Hart is a great talker, the words flow out of him like butter. Hawke has to sustain the rhythm and cadence of long speeches. And theater vet Cannavale, who had bonded with Hawke on “Hurly Burly” when they were both going through divorces, was there for him on “Blue Moon,” running lines. “He was my de facto acting coach,” said Hawke.

Hawke was a “monk” during production, he said. “I would just sit in my dressing room and listen to Ella Fitzgerald sing Rodgers & Hart songs over and over again. If you listen to the music, you start to realize how well the script is written, because the script functions like a Larry Hart song. It’s so funny and absolutely heartbreaking and poignant and witty and irreverent and lewd. So I started looking at that first monologue as the lyrics to the song. Rick [Linklater] was going to be Rodgers. Rick was going to write the music and build it and make sure it was sculpted right, and make sure it was presented right.”

Nailing this performance was about words. “This guy doesn’t walk and talk like me, so it’s voice and speech,” said Hawke. “He speaks in complete sentences. He speaks with clear ideas. It always has to be the perfect word choice. It had to have the language.”

But it was also movement and body language. Hart was short, with a hideous combover. “I grew my hair really long and then shaved the middle so that I could do the combover,” said Hawke, who is just under six feet. “A combover is about the most unflattering look that men have ever come up with. So what happens immediately is your own self-esteem drops, because everybody starts looking at you, talking to you differently. We did all these old school stagecraft tricks to make me smaller.”

They built a trench in the floor and he bent his legs inside wide pants. “When you do a scene with Margaret Qualley when you’re a foot shorter than her, is different than being two inches taller than her, because she doesn’t take it seriously.”

Luckily, Hawke had a decade to get used to the movie. Linklater gave it to him when he was in his early 40s and said, “when you’re old enough, we’re going do it.” They’d get together every couple of years and do a reading of the screenplay, Hawke said, “and we’d prune it and tweak it and talk about it.”

The actor didn’t feel any anxiety about it until just before shooting in Ireland. “Then I realized that this movie was going to put Rick and me up against the wall of our talent,” he said. “The bullseye in this movie is so small. There’s so many ways to go wrong. One room, real time. Larry Hart is dying.”

Also, the movie was filmed fast. “Rick had to be incredibly decisive and clear,” said Hawke. “We didn’t have a big budget, no budget, but luckily, we didn’t need one. We needed ideas and great actors. I knew if the guy playing Rodgers wasn’t phenomenal, the movie wouldn’t work. That was the biggest challenge.”

In just a few quick scenes during the after party, the movie establishes the relationship between these former partners who are both grieving the breakup. “There’s a certain Lennon-McCartney to Rodgers and Hart,” said Hawke. “For these two people who are that creative together for that long. It’s a high level of intimacy.”

But Rodgers is moving forward, while Hart is descending into alcohol. Hawke had long admired Scott, who also comes from theater. Qualley does not, but they all rehearsed the hell out of it and it all came together.

Next up: Sterlin Harjo’s FX series “The Lowdown,” in which Hawke plays a renegade truth-teller. “I got to have this character built for me by this brilliant young man,” said Hawke. “And I had so much fun.”
