NFL predictions: Ndamukong Suh picks Super Bowl contenders, dark horses, MVP and players to watch

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Both the Eagles and Chiefs are among the teams expected to get back to the big game but who are the other sides to watch? Who will end the season as MVP? Which defensive and offensive players will stand out? And who are the dark horses?

To answer all those questions, RadioTimes.com sat down with NFL legend and Sky Sports pundit Ndamukong Suh to get his predictions for the season ahead.

Ndamukong Suh’s NFL 2025 predictions

Super Bowl contenders

“I think there are going to be a lot of teams that have an opportunity to win. I think the strongest conference will be the NFC but there are a couple of teams I think have an opportunity to get to the Super Bowl.

“I have to mention the Kansas City Chiefs. I would also say the Detroit Lions. I think the Washington Commanders as well. And of course, the Philadelphia Eagles seem like they’re rebuilding every single year to make that hard push to get into the Super Bowl.

“Those are my kind of top four teams as of right now that I think have a legit chance to get there as of right now.”

Dark horses

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, in white, blue and orange NFL uniform, hands off the American football to running back D'Andre Swift, with Bears and Kansas City Chiefs players in the background.

“I’ve just got a good feeling about my dark horses being the Chicago Bears. I think Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams are going to find a way to create havoc in that black and blue division of the NFC North.

“Ultimately, I mean, it’s fair game for anybody and everybody. Everybody is at 00:00 today. We’ll see after week one how things shape up but even then. I mean, it’s so early in the season. The season, honestly, hasn’t even started yet.”

MVP

Baltimore Ravens Lamar Jackson, in purple and black NFL uniform, prepares to throw an American football.

“My MVP for this year is Lamar Jackson. And the reason I’m picking him is I believe he and the Baltimore Ravens understand this is kind of a ‘put up or shut up’ year.

“He’s going to have to have an MVP season to be able to dethrone the two nemeses of his career – Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs – to win that Conference (the AFC) and go from there.”

Defensive player to watch

Green Bay Packers Micah Parsons, in a yellow hat and a green, yellow and blue jumper, gestures as he speaks in front of a Green Bay Packers sponsors board.

“The player I’m most excited to watch outside of my defensive tackles? That would have to be Micah Parsons.

“I think as long as he stays healthy, you’re going to see a Green Bay Packers defence that is built around him to have success. I feel like they made that trade as their next version of Reggie White to come in and take them to a Super Bowl and have an opportunity to go and win it.”

Offensive player to watch

Saquon Barkley, in green and white NFL uniform, celebrates with his Philadelphia Eagles teammates in the end zone.

“The non-quarterback to stand out this year? It’s a tough one. I mean, I think my easy answer would be Saquon Barkley. I think he back doors his successful season.

“He may not have a record-breaking year, but he’s still going to be a massive force to be dealt with. He’s obviously the linchpin and cornerstone of the Philadelphia Eagles team and offence.”

How to watch NFL on TV

NFL TV rights will be divided between Sky Sports, NFL Game Pass via DAZN and free-to-air channel 5 in 2025.

Sky Sports boasts the first pick for the 6pm and 9pm game slots each Sunday, as well as up to three more games on any given Sunday.

‘Ice Road Truckers’ to Return for Season 12 on History Channel After 8-Year Break

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Just as summer is coming to an end, the History Channel’s chilliest reality series is coming back to the small screen.

On Wednesday, September 3, it was revealed that Ice Road Truckers will return with brand new episodes this October after eight years off the air. Created, executive produced, and narrated by Thom Beers, the series debuted on the History Channel in 2007 and ran for 11 seasons until going on an indefinite hiatus in 2017.

Season 12 will see the return of stars Todd Dewey and Lisa Kelly, as well as feature a new group of rookie truck drivers. The series will continue to follow the drivers as they face dangerous conditions while working to transport supplies to remote areas across Canada and Alaska.

“From its original series premiere in 2007 to a several years long hiatus, the fearless truckers return like never before to the treacherous terrain of icy roads and frozen lakes in Northern Canada delivering crucial supplies and necessities to isolated communities,” reads a Wednesday press release. “With a winter window shorter than ever and no time to waste, these drivers risk everything to haul in a lifeline of goods while chasing big paydays before the opportunity melts away under their chained tires.”

Kelly originally starred on Seasons 3 through 5 of Ice Road Truckers before returning for Season 7 in 2013. Dewey, for his part, joined the show during Season 7 and continued to appear on the series through Season 11 with Kelly.

“The timing couldn’t be better to bring back a beloved series that once resonated with our viewers for over a decade,” Eli Lehrer, Executive Vice President and Head of Programming for the History Channel, said in a Wednesday press release statement. “We’re pleased to have this new season of Ice Road Truckers be a co-production with our Canadian partners at Corus Entertainment as this season ventures into a new era of storytelling for the series that infuses fresh energy and new challenges while honoring its rich legacy.”

Former cast member Alex Debogorski was the only person to appear on all 11 seasons of the show. Hugh Rowland appeared on Seasons 1 through 8 of the show, while Season 11 also featured Art Burke, Reno Ward, Steph Custance, and Mark Kohaykewych.

The Ice Road Truckers community faced tragedy in 2016, as Darrell Ward — who appeared on Season 6 through 10 — died in a plane crash at the age of 52. Multiple outlets reported at the time that Ward was flying from the Great American Truck Show in Dallas to Missoula, Montana, to film a pilot of a show about the recovery of plane wrecks.

Original Productions and Eagle Vision produce Ice Road Truckers for the History Channel and Corus Entertainment. Jeff Hasler, Brian Lovett, Meredith Prunkard, and Patrick Costello serve as executive producers for Original Productions, while Kyle Irving, Lisa Meeches, and Rebecca Gibson executive produce for Eagle Vision. Lehrer, Mary E. Donahue, and Alex Hicks also serve as executive producers for the History Channel.

Palestine-Set ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ Is Talk of Venice

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Rarely does a Venice film get a standing ovation at its press conference, but in advance of its world premiere at the 82nd Venice Film Festival, “The Voice of Hind Rajab” has already received a glowing reception from filmgoers and critics on the Lido.

The latest film from Oscar-nominated Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania is a dramatization of what happened when Red Crescent volunteers attempted to speed their way through a mountain of bureaucratic obstacles in January 2024 to save six-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, who was trapped inside a car in northern Gaza with several dead relatives who had been wiped out by the Israeli Defense Force.

The Voice of Hind Rajab

Prior to the question and answer portion of the press conference, star Saja Kilani read a statement on behalf of “The Voice of Hind Rajab” cast and crew that noted: “‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ does not need our defense. This film is not an opinion or a fantasy. It is anchored in truth. Hind’s story carries the weight of an entire people. Her voice is one amongst tens of thousands of children that were killed in Gaza in the last two years alone.”

She added, “Behind every number is a story that never got to be told. Hind’s story is about a child crying out, ‘Save me.’ And the real question is, how have we let a child beg for life? No one can live in peace while even one child is forced to plead for survival.” (You can read the full statement below.)

Ben Hania, who has covered several Middle Eastern and North African conflicts in both her narrative work (“The Man Who Sold His Skin”) and her non-fiction work (“Four Daughters”) said, “When I heard the first time the voice of Hind Rajab, there was something more than her voice. It was the very voice of Gaza asking for help, and nobody could answer.” That, and a “strong desire, and the feeling of anger and helplessness gave birth to this movie.”

Producer Nadim Cheikhrouha shared that he and Ben Hania were actually getting ready to make a different film before they heard the story of Rajab. Both thought, “We can’t stay just watching what’s happening and do some other stuff. We need to do this movie, and we need to do it quickly,” said the producer. “We had this feeling of emergency.”

Joaquin Phoenix, James Wilson, Rooney Mara, Andrea Romeio, Amer Hlehel, Clara Khoury, Nadim Cheikhrouha, Kaouther Ben Hania, Saja Kilani, Motaz Malhees and Odessa Rae attend the 'The Voice Of Hind Rajab' red carpet during the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on September 03, 2025 in Venice, Italy.

The pair were able to go into production with only a few partners, though the list of producers for “The Voice of Hind Rajab” now includes Brad Pitt and his company Plan B Entertainment, as well as Oscar-winning directors Jonathan Glazer and Alfonso Cuarón, and couple Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara. “The fact that all those names joined the movie means something,” said Ben Hania. “I never in my life thought that could be possible. So I’m very grateful for their support.”

Listening to the stars of “The Voice of Hind Rajab” talk about the film, the prevailing sentiment was clear. “It’s not a film for us. It was really a duty to go and do this,” said Amer Hlehel. “We needed that film to express ourselves as actors and artists.” Kilani added, “Usually with a film, you create a character, you build this narrative in your head, but this film, there was no acting.”

A key choice Ben Hania made in order to capture authentic responses from her actors was to not let them listen to the real-life voice recordings of Rajab that are used in the film until they were on set shooting each scene. “It’s one thing to read the script and to know exactly what she said, and we rehearsed that, but it’s a whole different aspect when you hear her voice,” said Kilani.

“There were a lot of tears, and also the team was in tears. Everybody. We were in a very small and closed set, and everyone was engaged,” said actress Clara Khoury. “The whole film set, because of the cause, because of what’s happening in Gaza and the genocide, the ongoing genocide that is not stopping yet.”

Actor Motaz Malhees, who plays the Red Crescent volunteer who is the first to speak to Rajab, shared that he felt a deeply personal connection to her story, having lived in the West Bank as a child. “It wasn’t easy. I felt like I died a thousand times hearing Hind’s voice. From the first moment, it just sent me back to my childhood. So it wasn’t a new thing for me. It’s a life I lived,” he said. “There were two times where I couldn’t keep filming. I had a panic attack, and I had the support from everyone also. It was hard, but it’s a responsibility for me.”

Anticipating certain criticisms of the film, which dramatizes a true story, Ben Hania said, “When you amplify the voice of Palestinians, you are always personally accused of being exploitative, and it’s another way to silence you.” But her hope is that “things should change. We’ve seen that the narrative all around the world that those dying in Gaza are collateral damage in media. And I think this is so dehumanizing, and that’s why cinema art and every kind of expression is very important to give those people a voice and a face.”

“The Voice of Hind Rajab” has already been chosen as Tunisia’s submission for Best International Feature, and has been pegged as the new frontrunner for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Should it find an even bigger platform, its actors might be recognized in the awards fray as well, with Malhees, Kilani, Hlehel, and Khoury being campaigned for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress, respectively, and Ben Hania to be recognized in various categories, as she also wrote the film.

Read the full statement from “The Voice of Hind Rajab” cast and crew below:

“On behalf of all of us actors, and in the name of the entire team, we ask, isn’t it enough? Enough of the mass killing, the starvation, the dehumanization, the destruction, the ongoing occupation. ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ does not need our defense. This film is not an opinion or a fantasy. It is anchored in truth. Hind’s story carries the weight of an entire people. Her voice is one amongst 10s of 1000s of children that were killed in Gaza in the last two years alone. It is the voice of every daughter and every son with the right to live, to dream, to exist in dignity, yet all of it was stolen in front of unblinking eyes, and these are only the voices we know. Behind every number is a story that never got to be told. Hind’s story is about a child crying out, ‘Save me.’ And the real question is, how have we let a child beg for life? No one can live in peace while even one child is forced to plead for survival. Let Hind Rajab’s voice echo around the world. Let it remind you of the silence that has been built around Gaza. Let it name the genocide that silence protects and let it pierce the word enough, not tomorrow, not someday, now. For justice, for the sake of humanity, for the future of every child. Enough.”

“The Voice of Hind Rajab” premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. It is currently seeking U.S. distribution.

Thomas Schumacher to Depart Disney Theatrical Group

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Thomas Schumacher, a leading force in growing Disney Theatrical Group into one of the most successful and influential theater producers on Broadway and around the world, will step down as DTG’s chief creative officer at the end of this month after a decades-long tenure at the company.

The move was announced in a studio-wide memo sent Sept. 3 by Alan Bergman, the co-chairman of Disney Entertainment. After Schumacher’s departure, DTG will be led by managing director Andrew Flatt and executive producer Anne Quart, two longtime company veterans who have worked closely with Schumacher for some 20 years.

After his Disney exit, Schumacher “will continue shaping the face of the global theatrical landscape as a behind-the-scenes force focused on the next generation of artists and audiences,” Bergman said in his memo. He’ll also work as a consultant for DTG in the wake of the transition.

Schumacher initially joined Disney Animation as a producer on the 1990 movie sequel “The Rescuers Down Under,” at a time when the conglom’s animation arm was beginning its resurgence with megahits including “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” — all three of which the company has adapted into internationally successful stage properties. Schumacher was eventually named president of Disney Animation in 1999 before shifting duties to focus solely on the oversight of Disney Theatrical in 2002.

Launching in 1994 with the Broadway adaptation of “Beauty and the Beast,” Disney’s theatrical division — which Schumacher has run for 26 of its 31 years in existence — has produced 10 Broadway titles in total including three of the 15 longest-running shows in Broadway history (“The Lion King,” “Aladdin” and “Beauty”). The company’s stage productions have been seen by more than 240 million theatergoers worldwide, according to Disney stats, and won 20 Tony Awards. Over the years, DTG’s 30 global stagings of the 1998 Tony winner “The Lion King” have played a key role in establishing the Disney IP as the top-grossing title in any medium.

Disney Theatrical and its family-friendly productions were also integral components in Times Square’s transformation from de-facto red light district into the tourist-trafficked, all-ages nexus that it is today. Along the way, the popularity of Disney shows has helped draw an ever-increasing stream of family theatergoers to Broadway (where attendance hit 14.7 million for the 2024-25 season, up more than 60% from the 1994-95 season when “Beauty” opened). Meanwhile, the enduring revenue streams generated by Disney’s stage successes have encouraged a growing number of other Hollywood studios and IP holders to give Broadway a try.

During his time at the helm of DTG, Schumacher also won over an insular Broadway community that was initially skeptical of a corporate studio’s incursion into the theater district. He went on to serve as the chairman of the board of the Broadway League, and is currently on the League’s Tony Administration Committee.

In his memo, Bergman added that Schumacher also “has grown Disney on Ice, pioneered sensory-friendly Broadway shows, and developed an expansive program to enable schools to produce Disney musicals on their own stages. He has been a tireless supporter, advocate, and leader of the theatre community, playing a key role in turning Broadway’s lights back on during the unprecedented pandemic shutdown. It’s a truly remarkable record.”

Schumacher said in a statement, “Thirty-eight years ago when Peter Schneider at Disney Animation asked me to produce ‘The Rescuers Down Under,’ I had no idea it would lead to four decades working with some of the most exceptional creative artists in the world — both in animation and theatre. I’m proud that Disney Theatrical will be in the extraordinarily capable hands of Andrew Flatt and Anne Quart, with whom I’ve worked for over 20 years. I can’t wait to see how they lead this peerless organization forward.”

As noted in Bergman’s memo, DTG leaders Flatt and Quart will continue to report to Cathleen Taff, Disney’s president of production, franchise management and theatrical distribution.

Disney Theatrical currently counts two long-running Broadway titles — “The Lion King” and “Aladdin” — among its 21 productions now running around the world. DTG’s next major musical outing, “The Greatest Showman,” is gearing up for a world premiere in the U.K. in the spring.

Set in Victorian England, 1859, Mārama is the story of a young Māori woman’s fight to reclaim her identity and indigenous culture. When she is mysteriously summoned from New Zealand to North Yorkshire, she uncovers her horrific colonial heritage and is compelled to confront and destroy the titled Englishman who devastated her family.

The movie features Māori actor Ariāna Osborne (Madam) in the lead role alongside British actors Toby Stephens (Black Sails) and Umi Myers (Bob Marley: One Love), as well as New Zealanders Erroll Shand (Savage) and Jordan Mooney (The Bluff).

The acquisition agreement, which encompasses all North American distribution rights, was negotiated by the Dark Sky Films acquisition team and producers Sharlene George and Rouzie Hassanova. The former is a veteran genre presence while newcomer Watermelon is known for releasing From Ground Zero and working on The Voice Of Hind Rajab.

The film will be released in North American theaters in the first quarter of 2026. International sales at TIFF are being handled by Franziska McCray. Dark Sky and Watermelon are both owned by MPI Media Group.

Pic is produced by Sharlene George (Taumanu), CEO and Founding Partner of international production company The Sweetshop.  The film’s other producers are Rickylee Russell-Waipuka (Taumanu), Rouzie Hassanova (Radiogram) with Paraone Gloyne as Pou Tiaki Reo & Tikanga (Māori Language & Culture Producer).  Executive producers include Victoria Dabbs, Gal Greenspan for Sweetshop Entertainment, Jill Macnab and Phil Bremner for Vendetta Films.

The film was developed with support from Te Tumu Whakaata Taonga/The New Zealand Film Commission, imagineNATIVE, The Black List, Toronto I.F.F., Zurich I.F.F., and the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

Badie Ali, co-CEO of Dark Sky Films and Watermelon Pictures commented: “Taratoa Stappard has crafted a visually stunning, emotionally resonant film that redefines what gothic horror can be. We’re proud to champion Indigenous storytelling and bring this powerful, culturally rooted work to North American audiences.”

“Mārama is an Indigenous-led production in every sense,” added producer Sharlene George. “It’s a film that not only challenges conventions, but also puts Indigenous voices and worldviews at the heart of its storytelling.”

Writer-director Taratoa Stappard said: “Mārama is the first of my planned trilogy of Māori gothic horror stories about colonising violence being met with Indigenous retribution. I can’t wait to share my film with the world.”

Noah Hawley Breaks Down Morrow’s Mission, ‘Alien’ Parallels, and More (Exclusive)

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Alien: Earth, Season 1 Episode 5, “In Space, No One…”]

Alien: Earth took us back in time (and into space) mere days before the USCSS Maginot’s intended arrival date on the planet in the show’s riveting fifth installment, “In Space, No One…” which pays homage, not just in title, to Ridley Scott‘s 1979 film that started it all.

Written and directed by series creator Noah Hawley, Alien: Earth‘s latest episode tracks the events that led to the crash-landing of the USCSS Magino, as seen in the premiere episode, through Morrow’s (Babou Ceesay) eyes. As a security officer, the cyborg is alerted to a death aboard the ship caused by a breach in the containment of the species they’re transporting.

But as the events play out, Morrow realizes that sabotage is at play, and he begins to look at everyone suspiciously, including interim captain Zaveri (Richa Moorjani), who steps up after the ship’s captain dies. Still, the cyborg maintains his control and calm, even eliciting a curious comment from crewmate Rahim (Amir Boutros), who wonders how the cyborg doesn’t break a sweat despite the stress.

Realizing that navigation has also been lost, meaning the only potential outcome is a crash-landing, Morrow seeks answers and discovers a crew member has been tasked by Prodigy, Boy Kavalier’s (Samuel Blenkin) corp, to commandeer the ship and cargo. In other words, the seemingly random crash-landing had been orchestrated all along by the barefoot billionaire.

Patrick Brown / FX

And as Morrow roots out the sabatour, the creatures aboard are running amok, reducing the crew count drastically. When Morrow devises a plan to meet at the bridge, he decides that to preserve the cargo and deliver it to Weyland-Yutani, only he is needed to survive, and so he welds the door shut, leaving Zaveri to be massacred by the Xenomorph.

As he works to square away his tasks before closing himself in the emergency landing space, the calm and cool Morrow finally breaks a sweat. Is it due to the pressure of a 65-year-long mission during which he tragically lost his daughter? Hawley answers that question and many more, including which new species should scare viewers the most, in the Q&A below.

This episode pays homage to the story told in 1979’s Alien, but this time around, Morrow is at the center of it all. What made you want to reimagine this story, and what is driving Morrow to complete this mission?

Noah Hawley: I love the reversals for an audience in whom you’re rooting for, and who you’re rooting against. And I think those are some of the most meaningful moments as a viewer because it really is an active process that you go through. I remember in Season 2 of Fargo, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst, and they’re up against this Gerhardt family, and you think, “Well, I don’t care who they send, I’m rooting for Jesse and Kirsten.” And then they send the kid with cerebral palsy who wants to prove he’s a man. And the audience goes, “Well, hold on. I don’t want anything bad to happen to him.”

I think we’re trained to root for violence as a solution to a problem, and I always want the audience to have to wrestle with it a little bit and to look and to go, well, look at Morrow’s side of it. I mean, he has this mission he’s been tasked with, and he lost his ship. It was boarded, and they’ve stolen from him, and he’s the protagonist in his story, and his ethics are not our ethics, necessarily, but he’s not wrong on some level. When he says to Slightly, “If you took something from me, how is it wrong for me to take it back?”

The biggest reveal in this episode is that Prodigy had infiltrated Weyland-Yutani’s USCSS Maginot with the intent to sabotage their mission. Does Morrow’s drive to go after Prodigy and Kavalier stem from wanting to give purpose to the time he lost with his daughter?

No, I think he articulates it in the third hour when he says, “I’ve been gone 65 years, this is my life’s work, and if I’ve lost this, then what was the point of those last 65 years?” And clearly, he made some choices. He sealed the door so that [Zaveri] couldn’t get in. I mean, he made these choices that are meaningful if you actually get the ends that justify the means. But if you don’t, then you just have the stuff that you did, and you have nothing to show for it.

This mostly contained episode builds up to an outcome we already knew. How did you approach that as a director and writer of the installment?

Well, you have to invest in all those people and think about how hard that is, to introduce this crew in 51 minutes, distinct and specific individuals whom you have feelings about. And then we’re also introducing and solving a sabotage mystery, and we’re playing out all these creature stories. So, on some level, why I wanted to do it was my mission overall was to try to turn Alien into something new. But if someone was going to get to also do classic Alien, I wanted that to be me. Right? I wanted to go, “I see what you did, Sir Ridley, and I see what you did, Mr. Cameron and Mr. Fincher, and here I am. Here’s my best effort at it.”

What’s interesting is that Morrow is technically in Ripley’s (Sigourney Weaver) shoes in this scenario, but he keeps his cool to the point that the crew questions why he isn’t sweating… until he is.

Then there’s that moment when Clem (Tom Moya) runs up and says something big, and you see for the first time Morrow doesn’t know what to do, everything is out of control. And that moment is everything to me. And Babou played it so brilliantly, but then he takes charge. There’s a moment she obviously can’t recover from that moment for herself, but he does, and that’s why he survives.

In that final sequence aboard the USCSS Maginot, Morrow does begin to sweat. Is that a result of several different factors or merely the encroaching Xenomorph?

It’s a level of complexity. We all face it, right? You’re trying to get dinner on the table, there’s a flood in the bathroom, the cat’s throwing up in the other room. There’s a certain moment where you’re just like, I literally don’t know what to do right now. I don’t know which fire to put out. I don’t know what to do. Obviously, the stakes here are a lot higher, but I do think we all reach a moment where it’s just one thing too many, and he’s literally been carrying this crew; their priorities are weird, he’s got a drug addict for a doctor, it’s the island of misfit toys that’s on this ship. He’s been like, I’m going to get us through, and then at a certain point, he realizes I can get me through, I can’t get anybody else through, especially if they’re not going to help.

Babou Ceesay’s real-life daughter plays Morrow’s daughter in this episode’s flashback, and your son appeared alongside you earlier this season. What was it like incorporating real family members into the series, and how did that lend itself to more authentic moments onscreen?

It’s only fair for him to get his kid onscreen, too. This is how I make things. I make things by hand and to the point of yeah, I record music for the show and my son asked if there was something for him, and I thought, well yeah, I can put him in, but he’s not one of the lost boys, so he could be the young Hermit, but I’m not going to write scenes for it. I was planning to shoot this flashback piece, and so I’d need a father and a mother, and I thought, there’s just going to be day players, and the best way to get any kind of performance out of him is to just get down on the floor and do it with him. And it was really meaningful for me personally, because, of course, that was two years ago. The difference between a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old is… he’s a different kid now, right?

And so for Babou, in that moment, I thought, we’ve all come all this way. He’s moved his family across the earth. Why wouldn’t I give him that lifelong memory and connection with his own child? That’s immortalized on film. I think that too often we look at these shows as some calculated act written by a cash register or something, but this is five years of my life. This is a very personal document for me,

We’ve known the Xenomorph for years, but you’ve introduced several new species into the Alien world with this series. Is there one we should be most terrified of?

Well, I think people are rightly focusing on the eye simply because it clearly has a larger agenda. And as you see, as the season goes on, this may not just be a parasite or a predator. This may be a rival. And I think that’s really interesting.

Prop Store’s  Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction Sells Dark Side

There has to be a truly exceptional reason to get anyone, including anyone on the IndieWire staff, to walk into the Times Square Planet Hollywood at 10 a.m. on a Tuesday. In fairness, Planet Hollywoods do tend to have fun movie memorabilia or replica props as part of their decor; the restaurant’s themed focus on filmmaking from the ‘90s onwards has, in its own way, raised an awareness of production design and costumes as items of value and not just souvenirs for cast and crew.

But on this particular Tuesday at 10 a.m., the third floor of New York’s Planet Hollywood had millions of dollars worth of film rarities displayed under museum-grade glass, with glossy catalogues authenticating the provenance of an original stormtrooper helmet, a belt and bullwhip used in “The Last Crusade,” Picard’s Ressikan Flute from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode “The Inner Light,” and the lightsaber used in Darth Vader’s dueling sequences (and therefore wielded by the late, legendary fight coordinator Bob Anderson) in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Return of the Jedi.”

'Dead Man's Wire'

Darth Vader, Indiana Jones, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard certainly constitute a “return to office” exception.

The Planet Hollywood display was presented by Prop Store which, since 1998, has been an auction house specifically for film and television memorabilia; the company runs live auctions of over 1,000 lots three times a year. They’re always trying to spread the word beyond their coterie of regular collectors, but it says something for them to be so hyped that they’re willing to hand-carry lightsabers and stick “Men in Black” neuralyzers in an overhead compartment on the flight from LA to New York to market their September 4-6 live auction.

What’s striking about Prop Store’s work — at least to this civilian IndieWire staffer who has never won a live auction bid on eBay — is just how methodically each item is documented and vetted, even sometimes restored. Staff do what COO Brandon Alinger called “screen matches,” where they go through films frame-by-frame in 4K (or even higher resolutions) in order to spot individual scratches and characteristics of props, and separate the genuine articles from inauthentic replicas (and the odd Halloween mask).

The Darth Vader combat lightsaber, for instance, was X-rayed in order to determine that the steel rod, which was used for fight sequences (the sinister red “light” and sound effects were added in after the fact, of course) was indeed assembled in the correct way. The catalogues detailing all of Prop Store’s work are full of pull quotes from the filmmakers, stills from the films, references to other props and inspirations, in addition to meticulous photos of each prop available to bid on. It all looks identical to the material one would find in a fine art auction.

Just like the art world, Alinger told IndieWire that the company does have a lot of “regulars” who are consistently interested in film memorabilia as a whole, or in specific genres/franchises. Occasionally, museums will work with benefactors to put up bids for their collections. But they’re always trying to reach more fans.

The allure of movies and the consolidation of Internet fandoms had deepened the value of the marquee franchise and blockbuster items Prop Store tends to auction. While Alinger would expect items from the original “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” films to be highly prized — they’ve had 40-50 years to appreciate — newer franchise items are just as sought-after, “especially Marvel,” Alinger said.

No doubt there is a cinema and cultural studies thesis to be written about why that is; but it is sufficient for this article’s purposes to say that it’s a mindfuck to stare at a weathered, metal cylinder with a rod sticking out, its black paint slightly peeling, and know that you’re looking at something someone is about to spend possibly millions of dollars to own.

But one also thinks of Ralph McQuarrie, who did the original concept work on the lightsabers, or “Star Wars” set designer and prop maker Roger Christian, and how they must feel, knowing their work has gone on to become, as Alinger put it, “the Ruby Slippers” of their generation of cinema.

George Lucas is probably fine. But Alinger has never seen fans so excited for something.

“Out of anything we’ve handled here at Prop Store, I would say that lightsaber has the potential to reach the highest sale price. But it’s also generated the most response, the most interest from fans,” Alinger said. “We’ve had so many people reaching out to us and saying, ‘I can’t believe you have this,’ or people want to come and attend these in-person previews like the one we’re at now. It’s just something that people have gotten very excited about.”

It will likely be later in the first day of the live auction, sometime on September 4, when Darth Vader’s dueling lightsaber will go up onto the virtual block. Anyone can sign up to bid or simply to watch Prop Store’s live auctions, which take place at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.
