Yellowstone’s Kevin Costner opens up on moving on from projects

by jummy84 September 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Now, as the actor fronts a new documentary series, he has spoken about the projects he wants to take on at this stage of his career, and about his “need to move on” from others.

“I’m willing to do anything where I feel like what I’m doing is for myself,” Costner said, in exclusive quotes provided to Radio Times. “It doesn’t have to be a Western, it could be something else. But when something is no longer interesting to me, or there’s some other reason that I need to move on, I’m willing to do that.

“I think you can write a short story and it can live forever. You can write a novel and it can live forever. You can make a short movie and it can live forever. It’s about how you’re telling it. It’s about if other people are going to be able to relate to it and move to it. That’s why there are certain books that continue to live with us, that we pass on to our children.

“I think the hope for me is that I can stay relevant; not only to myself, but to people who find my work. I can’t create work that I think is going to find them. I can only create work that when they do find it, it reflects what I was feeling and my sensibility. And hopefully they’re moved by it.”

Kevin Costner in Kevin Costner’s The West. Sky HISTORY

Since Costner left, the original series of Yellowstone has come to an end, with numerous spin-offs at different stages of development to carry on the franchise.

Costner made the comments as he fronts new eight-part documentary series Kevin Costner’s The West.

The series, which is executive produced by Costner along with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, is said to provide a “fresh look at the epic history of the American West by delving into the desperate struggle for the land itself – and how it still shapes the America we know today”.

Speaking about the documentary, Costner said that he feels exploring the history has helped to reaffirm the truth behind some of the Western films he has starred in, which have shied away from the “romanticised” version of the period.

“When we first started making Westerns, people fell in love with the imagery,” he said. “They couldn’t believe how big the country was and how beautiful it was. When we put music to it and we saw someone on a horse, we just wanted to continue to see that image.

“To look at a town, you didn’t really understand how the town came to be; you just saw that it was existing. You didn’t think about any of the hardships, so we just romanticised what we saw. We didn’t see the exploration and the confrontation, which was inch-by-inch and usually ended in blood.

“People didn’t really want to see that; the slaughter, fear and cultures clashing. People flinched when they saw that, but the romantic idea is one of heroism, which is a little more acceptable.”

Costner continued: “Everything that happened in Dances with Wolves or Open Range or Horizon actually happened out there. I didn’t make those stories up. There were interactions and they all have truth to them. They’re made up ideas, but those interactions happened a million times.

“The documentary serves to back up those kind of stories. There were slaves and there were captives in the West. We did mislead Native Americans for our own good – and we kept doing it, from one shore to the other shore. The Western movies that I did, in my mind, are true. They are honest. They are real. In some way, this documentary backs it all up.”

Kevin Costner’s The West will air from Monday 15th September at 9pm on Sky HISTORY and NOW. Find out more about how to sign up for Sky TV.

Adolescence’s Stephen Graham Wins Emmy for Limited Series Lead Actor

by jummy84 September 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Stephen Graham won the lead limited series actor Emmy on Sunday, recognizing his portrayal of Eddie Miller in Netflix’s “Adolescence,” which he co-created.

“This kind of thing doesn’t normally happen to a kid like me. I’m just a mixed-race kid from a block of flats in a place called Kirkby,” said Graham, who is of Swedish and Jamaican descent. “To be here today in front of my peers, and to be acknowledged by you, is the utmost humbling thing I could imagine my life, and it shows you that any dream is possible.”

Graham is best known for film roles including Guy Ritchie’s “Snatch” (2000) and Martin Scorsese’s “Gangs of New York” (2002). He also played Andrew “Combo” Gascoigne in the 2006 film “This Is England” and reprised the role in three sequel miniseries that aired in 2010, 2011 and 2015. His other credits include “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” two “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies and “The Irishman” as well as “Boardwalk Empire” on HBO and “Peaky Blinders” on BBC.

Also nominated for lead limited series actor were Colin Farrell for “The Penguin,” Jake Gyllenhaal for “Presumed Innocent,” Brian Tyree Henry for “Dope Thief” and Cooper Koch for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”

“Adolescence” earned Graham his first three Emmy nominations and wins. In addition to the acting award, he took home trophies for outstanding limited series and limited series writing.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Wins Emmy For Scripted Variety

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver Wins Emmy For Scripted Variety

by jummy84 September 15, 2025
written by jummy84

John Oliver once again beat Saturday Night Live.

HBO’s Last Week Tonight beat Lorne Michaels’ NBC show for the third straight year in the Outstanding Scripted Variety Series category.

It comes after the show, which launched on HBO in 2014, previously won seven consecutive times in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category.

John Oliver thanked HBO and his team as well as his family in an incredibly short speech, helping Nate Bargatze’s charity jar, designed to keep the speeches tight and donate money to the Boys and Girls Club of America. After Oliver’s speech, the counter went back to $99,000.

“F*ck you, Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you and you can add a f*ck to the swear jar as well,” he said before racing off the stage.

In 2023, the TV Academy shook up the categories last year, launching Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, alongside Outstanding Talk Series and moved Oliver into the former, going head-to-head with SNL, which had won the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series six years in a row starting in 2017.

It has been nominated for 73 Emmys and won 30. At the Creative Arts Emmys, though, it failed to win in directing, which went to The Late Show, and picture editing.

Oliver, who is contracted through to the end of the 2026 season, exec produces the series alongside Tim Carvell and Liz Stanton. It is produced by HBO in association with Peyance Productions and Avalon Television.

2025 Emmy Highlights: Winners and Major Moments

by jummy84 September 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Seth Rogen took the first Emmy of his two-decade career, winning the lead actor in a comedy prize for his role as purist studio chief Matt Remick in his Apple TV+ show The Studio, while Hacks star Jean Smart won lead actress in a comedy, her seventh Emmy of a long and illustrious career, as the 77th Emmy Awards kicked off in Los Angeles.”

“You honor me so much,” said Smart, as the Deborah Vance actress paid homage to her HBO show’s cast and crew. “Let’s be good to each other; let’s just be good to each other.” Smart has won the award all four seasons the mentor-protege comedy has been on the air.

Meawhile, Rogen won his first-ever Emmy after nine nominations. “I so could not wrap my head around this happening .. .I’ve never won anything in my life,” he said. Before this year, Rogen’s last notable win came for “Best Gut-Wrenching Performance” at the MTV Movie Awards a decade ago. Shortly after, veteran actress Katherine LaNasa also won her first-ever Emmy, a supporting actress in a drama prize for her role as a tartly wise head nurse on The Pitt.

An SNL-style cold open kicked off the Emmys with host Nate Bargatze playing a scientist inventing television and explaining to his assistants what the future of television will look like. (“What is streaming sir?” A new way for companies to lose money.”) The sketch also made the requisite joke about The Bear not being a comedy and noted that there will one day be “a world where the finest artists create stories of staggering beauty that millions of people will watch — on their phone while sitting on the toilet.”

Stephen Colbert introduced the first award of the night, for lead actor in a comedy, telling the audience “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring? Because I’ve got 200 very well-qualified candidates available tonight.” The recently canceled Late Show With Stephen Colbert is seeking its first-ever top Emmy for late night show, just eight months before it embarks on its last opening monologue.

Bargatze tried to incentivize shorter speeches by saying he’ll deduct from and add to a $100,000 donation to the Boys and Girls Club of America based on whether acceptance speeches went under or above 45 seconds. There was no penalty, though, for Jennifer Coolidge’s extended riff presenting lead actress in a comedy.

The night took on an early tone of gratitude. “I don’t know what to say. This is so nice. I appreciate you all,” Rogen said, before leaving the stage.

More to come.

Coldwater review: Andrew Lincoln-led psychological thriller will make you choke

by jummy84 September 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Life has a different plan though, with other men seemingly smelling the weakness in him, and making it their mission to make his life miserable. When John’s fight or flight response is triggered in a park, he runs for it, leaving a poor woman – and his own child, for that matter – in his dust as he belts it down the road. While he does later return to retrieve his daughter, the shock of the whole thing sparks him to keep running… all the way to rural Scotland.

With his family moving to the quaint and quiet village of Coldwater, it feels like a fresh start. Bible-bashing neighbours Tommy (Ewen Bremner) and Rebecca (Eve Myles) welcome them into their home and the community. While his sex life with Fiona has still hit a road block, it’s a start.

But then he runs into a local yob in an off-licence, and it all goes wrong again. No escaping the bad guys for John – they’re everywhere.

When said local yob, Angus, later turns violent with John during a run-in on a late-night jog, a chain of events leaves Angus dead, John a shrivelling wreck, and new best mate Tommy his guardian angel. At least, that’s what he thinks. Turns out his scariest bad guy comes with a wide grin, a woollen jumper, and a more-than-slight obsession with serial killers.

The incident triggers something in both Tommy and John alike, and soon the pair are in a battle of wits for control over the other. As Tommy, Ewan Bremner is deliciously creepy – played perfectly as the women around him pick up on it immediately, but with enough subtlety that men dismiss it as “just what he’s like”.

On the flip side, Andrew Lincoln is perfectly cast as John, a man emasculated from life and in need of some kind, ANY kind, of win. Most will know Lincoln as strong Walking Dead leading man, Rick Grimes, and you can sense that ability in John – he just can’t, or won’t, unlock it in himself, beaten down and depressed.

Psychological thrillers have a knack sometimes of falling into the trap of having their characters make stupid decisions or cliché moves – ”Don’t go to the police!” “Go down that dark garden path!” “Let’s open this spooky door” – but in Coldwater, writer David Ireland justifies everything down to the tiniest detail, backing the mousey John into a corner.

But it’s also why I love the women of the show, who make perfect partners for their male counterparts. Fiona is the breadwinner and strong-willed, not taking fools gladly and not easily deceived. Before anything even goes wrong, she doesn’t trust Tommy – and he can sense that, keeping him on edge. This trait also explains her growing frustration with her husband, who’s so willing to take someone’s lead it almost doesn’t matter who that someone is.

Indira Varma as Fiona in Coldwater, holding window blinds open to look through them.

Meanwhile Eve Myles’ is deliciously deceptive as the pastor who everyone adores. Warm and inviting to everyone, there’s a hidden side to everything she does that’s just waiting to come out – she’s not even Christian, openly admitting to Fiona being atheist. It just proves how good she is at lying, something that will come in handy down the line.

There’s certainly some gripes to have with Coldwater, every now and again doing something so wild it throws you out of the realistic world that’s been created, and sometimes edging over the thrilling-ridiculous line in the wrong direction. But it does pull itself back when it needs to, creating a show that is all too easy to want more of.

Coldwater is the kind of thriller that keeps you in a chokehold from the opening moments of the first episode, and refuses to let go until the end.

By the end of the series, you’ll be left struggling to breathe… and that’s just where creator David Ireland wants you.

Coldwater is available now on ITVX.

‘No Other Land’ Co-Director Basel Adra Says Home Raided by IDF

by jummy84 September 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Basel Adra, co-director of the 2025 Academy Award winner for Best Documentary Feature, “No Other Land,” has told the Associated Press that his home was raided by soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces September 13 following alleged settler violence in his West Bank village.

Giving an on-camera interview to the AP, Adra is clearly free and not currently being detained by Israeli forces as was feared by his co-director Yuval Abraham who tweeted his concern about the situation. “Happening now: Israeli army raiding the house of oscar winner Basel Adra after Israeli settlers attacked his village earlier and beat up his family member,” Abraham tweeted September 13. “Soldiers could try to abduct Basel into one of Israel’s prisons which are effectively torture sites.”

Medium shot of a man and woman riding together on a motorcycle; still from 'Saiyaara'

Adra was not abducted and remains free.

However, the concern that he might be detained by the IDF apparently influenced Adra’s decision not to return to his home yesterday. These incidents have occurred in the wake of co-director Hamdan Ballal being beaten up by Israeli settlers in the weeks after “No Other Land” won the Oscar in March. That resulted in controversy, with Abraham accusing the Academy of not publicly supporting Ballal, who indeed was not mentioned in their original statement supporting artistic freedom. The Academy ultimately apologized.

A similar situation seemed to be unfolding September 13. Adra told the AP, “Soldiers invade [his West Bank village] Al-Tuwani after settlers attacked us on agricultural land. They invaded my home here in the activist space and my home up where my wife and my nine month old daughter were alone. They were searching in the house, they took the phone of my wife. They prevented other family members like my sisters, like my father, to be with my wife in the home – they detained them in the street. Israel, I think, is trying to attack and to shut down any influencer or journalist who speaks up against the occupation. In Gaza we see they precisely killing journalists. I have many messages, one of them for the governments and world leaders to take serious actions to stop the genocide in Gaza, to stop the occupation, and to influence and implement the international law and force Israel, putting sanctions against it until they respect international law.”

Adra also claimed that his brother had been beaten up by settlers during the attack.

Julia Roberts, Sean Penn Host Screening for Oscar Contender ‘Manas’

by jummy84 September 14, 2025
written by jummy84

Sean Penn, Julia Roberts, and John and Nancy Ross hosted a screening of Marianna Brennand’s debut film “Manas” on Saturday in Los Angeles.

The film, one of those vying to be the Oscar contender for Brazil, was introduced by Roberts and Penn, who serves as an executive producer. The screening was followed by a Q&A with Brennand, the film’s director, writer and producer, and its star, Dira Paes.

Roberts told the audience: “I am so excited for what’s about to happen to everyone in this room because it happened to me and it will change you. This movie is life-affirming in such a sad and beautiful and magical way.”

Building on that sentiment, Penn reflected on the first time he encountered Brennand, recalling: “At the Cannes Film Festival this year, there was a Kering Foundation dinner, and a woman came up to the stage to accept the Emerging Talent Award. She gave a speech, and the authenticity of this person was the kind of power that could only make a great film.”

Brennand expressed her gratitude to her hosts: “Thank you, Sean, for seeing us, for recognizing the power of this story, and for speaking out… And Julia, thank you for empowering us with your presence here today. You both are immensely amplifying our voices.”

The film was born out of 10 years of research in the Amazon by Brennand, who began her career as a documentarian. It tells the story of Marcielle (Jamilli Correa), a 13-year-old from Marajó Island. Silenced in a society that ignores violence against women and children, she “confronts generational wounds and takes control of her destiny, forever altering her family’s fate,” according to a statement.

“Manas” won Brennand the best director award at Venice Days, the independent parallel section of the Venice Film Festival, and has collected a total 27 awards to date. The Brazilian film is one of six titles shortlisted to represent the country at the 2026 Academy Awards, with Penn, Academy Award winner Walter Salles, two-time Palme d’Or winners Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, and “I’m Still Here” producer Maria Carlota Bruno serving as executive producers.

On his decision to join as executive producer, Penn previously stated: “In the tradition last fulfilled by Walter Salles’s ‘I’m Still Here,’ Marianna Brennand’s film ‘Manas’ continues Brazil’s most enduring cinematic legacy. Films of striking social relevance that never fall to polemic or sensationalism, but instead so trustingly fulfill their characters’ plight and courage. ‘Manas’ is deeply emotional, stirring, and God forbid… important. I felt as if I had to put my skin back on after watching it.”
