Les Mis to host 40th anniversary gala with Alfie Boe and Michael Ball

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Guests will include ex-Jean Valjeans Alfie Boe and Michael Ball alongside Patti LuPone, Carrie Hope Fletcher and star of the Les Mis movie Samantha Barks.

The company of nearly 100 performers will be giving an in-concert version of the show’s soundtrack, similarly to the previous 25th and 30th anniversary runs.

All proceeds from the gala will go to UK food charities The Felix Project and UKHarvest, which work to rescue and redistribute healthy food to families in London.

Following the announcement, the show’s long-time producer Cameron Mackintosh said: “It is an extraordinary feeling to be celebrating our 40th Anniversary of Les Misérables on London’s Shaftesbury Avenue.

Les Mis. Deen Van Meer

“Having staged several of our other milestone performances in iconic venues like the Royal Albert Hall for our 10th or the o2 Arena for our 25th, I wanted to bring this special celebration home back to its roots.

“Unlike any other musical in history, Les Misérables has continuously triumphed in, not one, but two different and equally successful stagings of the musical, a hugely successful Oscar-winning movie, and spectacular staged concerts in both vast arenas and theatres around the world.

“Victor Hugo’s creation has proved to have no bounds, continuing to reach new corners of the Earth, playing to different races in their own languages, swept along by Boublil and Schönberg’s inspirational musical score. The reaction of the audience, wherever they are on the planet, is always uplifting; just as Victor Hugo hoped it would be when he first published the novel in 1845.”

Tickets for the gala will go on sale this Friday, but you can already get tickets to the show’s special anniversary performances taking place from 8th September to 3rd November.

When is the Les Misérables 40th anniversary gala?

The gala will take place on Les Mis’s actual anniversary of 8th October, and will be held at London’s Sondheim Theatre.

Who is confirmed for the Les Misérables 40th anniversary gala?

A company of nearly 100 performers will perform at the 40th anniversary gala. Including West End and Broadway legends Patti LuPone, Michael Ball, Alfie Boe, Samantha Barks, and Carrie Hope Fletcher.

Not to mention, returning faces Matt Lucas, Frances Ruffelle, Gerónimo Rauch, Jeremy Secomb and Bonnie Langford.

How to get tickets to the Les Misérables 40th anniversary gala

Pre-sale tickets will go live at 11am on Friday 19th September for anyone who has already signed up at Delfont Mackintosh Theatres – this sign-up closes at 4pm on Thursday 18th September.

General sale tickets will go live at 1pm on Friday 19th September.

For this one-off performance, at least 500 tickets (approximately half of the house) will be available for £25 to £250.

Carys Zeta Douglas, the only daughter of big screen royalty Michael Douglas, 80, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, 55, was spotted at W Magazine and Bloomingdale’s New York Fashion Week celebration at Eleven Madison Park Restaurant on September 11, 2025, marking the recent college grad’s first major public appearance without her doting parents by her side. The 22-year-old was largely kept out of the spotlight by her family while growing up, spending part of her childhood abroad in Bermuda, and later in upstate New York, rather than in Hollywood

Carys, who strongly resembles her Academy Award-winning mother, attended the event seemingly solo; also present at the party were celebs from Gabrielle Union to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Jane Fonda Says ‘I Can’t Stop Crying,’ & More

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Tributes are pouring in for Robert Redford, the great actor, director, and Sundance Film Festival founder who died September 16 at the age of 89. One of the most moving comes from his costar Jane Fonda, who appeared in five movies with him: 1960’s “Tall Story” (Redford’s first movie — he went uncredited), 1966’s “The Chase,” 1967’s “Barefoot in the Park,” 1979’s “The Electric Horseman,” and 2017’s “Our Souls at Night.”

In a statement provided to IndieWire, Fonda said, “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”

Ozzy Osbourne

The Sundance Institute said in a statement about its founder, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our founder and friend Robert Redford. Bob’s vision of a space and a platform for independent voices launched a movement that, over four decades later, has inspired generations of artists and redefined cinema in the U.S. and around the world. Beyond his enormous contributions to culture at large, we will miss his generosity, clarity of purpose, curiosity, rebellious spirit, and his love for the creative process. We are humbled to be among the stewards of his remarkable legacy, which will continue to guide the Institute in perpetuity.”

Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, told IndieWire in a statement, “In addition to being a titanic acting and directing talent, as an early board member of the Sundance Institute, I saw first-hand the Sundance Kid’s passionate commitment to indie film and young artists.   Robert Redford truly gave back. The entire scope of American film would have been much poorer without him. An amazing legacy of an amazing man.”

Other tributes came from Marlee Matlin, who recognized on X the incredible impact that Redford’s Sundance Film Festival had on allowing smaller human dramas to flourish. “Our film, CODA, came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance. And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed. RIP Robert.”

Colman Domingo wrote on X, “With love and admiration. Thank you Mr. Redford for your everlasting impact. Will be felt for generations.”

Aryna Sabalenka on Celebration Plans, Dobel Tequila and Tennis Rivals

by jummy84 September 16, 2025

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Variety may receive an affiliate commission.

Two weeks ago at Flushing Meadows, Aryna Sabalenka defended her U.S. Open title with a straight-sets win over Amanda Anisimova to claim her fourth Grand Slam trophy and second in New York. The final, which lasted just over 90 minutes, hinged on Sabalenka’s steadiness under pressure. For the Belarusian athlete, who had fallen short earlier this year in the finals of both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, the win reinforced her reputation as the most dominant hard court player on tour.

“I remember the moment I entered the stadium for the first time — it just immediately brought me back to last year’s finals and the moment of winning” Sabalenka tells me at the St. Regis in New York City, one day into the U.S Open tournament, and one week before winning her fourth Grand Slam. “It was just such a good vibes and I really want to replicate that and to experience that feeling again.”

Of course, we now know she successfully manifested another win — becoming the first woman since Serena Williams to win back-to-back U.S. Opens and solidifying her world No. 1 ranking. Before any of this, though, we’re sitting across from each other in the storied hotel’s grand ballroom, sipping a “Margaryna” cocktail she created in partnership with Dobel Tequila, only fantasizing about how she would celebrate a U.S Open win.

Maestro Dobel Diamante Tequila

While drinking and partying is not a part of the lifestyle for any professional athlete, Sabalenka says there’s no beverage she enjoys more than tequila when celebrating the end to a long tournament run. So, it was only fitting that ahead of the U.S Open, she would partner with the Mexican spirits brand, which she says is one of the only tequilas that doesn’t give her a hangover.

“I remember one day I tried Dobel And the next day I didn’t feel like I had had anything the night before.” she says. “I was like, ‘Oh, that’s really good.’

So, how will she celebrate her US. Open win? Next year, she plans to go back to Greece and rent a huge boat and to travel across the islands. “It’s so beautiful, so clean,” she says. “And DJs on the beach clubs, they always play really cool music. You’re always having fun there. And the food — oh my God — the food is amazing.”

Below, Sabalenka talks to Variety about her celebration plans, Dobel Tequila campaign, on-court rivalries and tennis fashion:

How did this partnership come about?

I love tequila and I feel like Dobel is really the smoothest one. I really feel great the next day because before if I would go out and have a drink the next day, I was still hungover. And I remember one day I tried Dobel and the next day I didn’t feel like I had had anything the night before. And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s really good. What if I met the team and just got some free stuff? Just to my house whenever I have a moment to have fun with the friends. And then we just came to the partnership and it’s been really amazing and fun. And we came up with ‘Margaryna, which is obviously Dobel and then we mix it with tropical olive oil which makes it healthier and a different flavor but so good. I love a margarita.

What is your relationship with alcohol and partying given your strict schedule?

There’s not much time where we can just go out and have fun. I just had a little vacation after Wimbledon for a week. So there I could allow myself to have little drinks. And I love certain drinks and sometimes I get tired of having the same one. So whenever I feel like trying something else, I always ask, ‘Whatever alcohol you have it in it, can you just switch it out for tequila?’ And they would always pour Dobel instead of whatever. And they always taste great. And whenever I have something to celebrate, like a title or after the tournament,  I allow myself to drink a little bit. So it’s not that much because we always stay disciplined and are very strict to the schedule. And there are not many opportunities to have fun. But drinking in celebration is the best because then you’re like, ‘Oh, whatever. I’ll have it all’ and you just go for it the next day.

Where do you like to travel when you have the rare time off?

Of course, Athens, Mykonos. But next year, we are planning to rent a huge boat, staying in a boat and going around the islands. So I feel like Greece is the best place. It’s so beautiful, so clean. And DJs on the beach clubs, they always play really cool music, you’re always having fun there. And the food, oh my God, the food is amazing.

What is your pre-match ritual?

The day before the match, you take it easy. You just like one hit in the middle of the day and then a treatment and then just chilling in the room watching some Netflix, trying to go to bed. I try to go to bed not that early but not later than 12. Usually it’s like 11. Sometimes I struggle to fall asleep. And on the next day, I always like to go to my favorite breakfast places. Also it depends on the time of the match. If it’s like 7 p.m., I take it easy and I enjoy my time. And then the moment I get into the car, going inside, this is the moment where I  switch off, and I start getting into that match mode. And sometimes I like to put my headphones on and just listen to the music and think about whatever to motivate myself. And then we go inside, we warm up, we stay with the team, we have our lunch and then it’s time to rock and roll.

Do you have a specific song or playlist you listen to before a match?

It’s always different. It’s a seasonal thing. If I get tired of something, then I switch it to another type of music. But  right now, since I’ve been to Mykonos and I love this DJ vibe, I just go for a ‘We Are the People’ remix, and I just keep the radio on Spotify and it’s just a really cool mix of music. Or I just go to a Coldplay playlist. It’s always different, I’m not the person who’s going to listen to one artist all the time.

How do you deal with your tennis rivalries?

Rivalries are such a huge part of of tennis culture. I think I love it. I think that’s what’s what pushes me to get better. And I remember, since a very young age, having this rivalry situation would always push  me to go and work harder and do better and become better. So I love it, it’s a good push for me to keep working hard and trying to become better than another one and it’s always a process of learning and getting better. That’s why I love sports because you always compete with someone, you have to take it as as a good thing.

Tennis fashion has become so much more ubiquitous over the past couple of years. Have you seen any trends on the court or in the stands you’re specifically loving or hating?

I actually love to see that tennis is so fashionable and every other brand is doing some sort of collaboration with tennis. So honestly, I love it so much. And I love to see that. There’s no such thing in fashion as ‘Oh it’s bad or it’s good.’ I feel like everyone has a different point of view on fashion, and everyone loves different things. It’s cool for sport to get bigger, to bring more people in the sport, more interest in the sport and it’s good for us at the end of the day. So far, whatever I’m seeing, I’ve loved it. I think it’s cool, people getting creative and doing collaborations and every brand does it in their own way. So I love to see that and it makes our sport, our life, more popular and bigger and we are more seen for what we do. I think it’s so cool.

What Did John Oliver, Hannah Einbinder Say When Bleeped at Emmys 2025

What Did John Oliver, Hannah Einbinder Say When Bleeped at Emmys 2025

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

For an awards show hosted by clean comedian Nate Bargatze, who avoids using foul language in his stand-up sets, the 2025 Emmys featured a surprisingly high number of f-bombs.

The CBS telecast of Sunday night’s awards ceremony had its sound cut out multiple times for home viewers as a number of winners peppered their acceptance speeches with curse words.

At one point, Bargatze even joked, he was going to start a swear jar.

So what did those bleeped winners say? Read on to find out.

Hannah Einbinder

The Hacks star won best supporting actress in a comedy, her first Emmy for her work in the fourth season of the Max series, and ended her speech with some pointed political remarks. While her “free Palestine” cry is getting attention, prior to that she also declared “Fuck ICE,” calling out the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency that’s been particularly active during Donald Trump’s second term, as the president has pushed for massive deportations of suspected illegal immigrants.

John Oliver

The Last Week Tonight host continued his Emmys winning streak, nabbing his third consecutive trophy in the scripted variety series category after his HBO show was recategorized. When he took the stage to accept his award, Oliver spoke fast, seemingly in an attempt to get his full speech within the allotted time, after Bargatze had declared that long speeches would deduct money from a charitable donation to the Boys and Girls Club.

“Fuck you, Nate Bargatze, that is a lot of money for you!” Oliver said, as he neared the end of his remarks. “And you can add a ‘fuck’ to the swear jar as well.”

Erin Doherty

The Adolescence actress, who won for best supporting actress in a limited series, praised her award-winning colleagues Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham and her family members before thanking the Television Academy, saying to the awards organization, “you’re all fucking stunning.”

Seth Rogen

Rogen won multiple awards on Sunday night, but it was when he won his final prize of best comedy series for The Studio that he colorfully expressed his regret for taking so much money away from Bargatze’s donation (not to worry, the host announced at the end of the show that the organization would receive a $350,000 donation after all).

After sharing his gratitude for all of the love shown to The Studio, Rogen joked, “If anyone else wants to say something, we’re already in debt. We fucked over the Boys and Girls, so.”

Industry season 4 release window for US confirmed by HBO

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Bloys also said that he would “love to see that show and those performers break through” when speaking about Industry, reflecting on the fact it has yet to get major awards recognition in the US.

In the UK, it has been more successful, with star Marisa Abela winning a Leading Actress BAFTA for her role as Yasmin.

The UK release date for the season has yet to be confirmed, but based on the schedules for previous runs we’d imagine all of the episodes will arrive at once after they have finished airing in the US. This means they are likely to be added to BBC iPlayer some time in March or April next year.

Ken Leung as Eric Tao in Industry. BBC/Bad Wolf Productions/HBO/Simon Ridgway

Industry season 4 is set to be a very different season. The end of season 3 which saw Pierpoint’s London trading floor close, and the central characters scattered.

Harper was last seen starting a fund which she planned to run from New York, Eric was jobless, Yasmin was set to marry Sir Henry Muck and Rishi was left in a very perilous situation indeed.

The new run will feature a host of new characters, played by the likes of Max Minghella, Kiernan Shipka, Jack Farthing, Toheeb Jimoh, Amy James-Kelly, Kal Penn, Charlie Heaton and Claire Forlani.

Meanwhile, original star Harry Lawtey won’t be returning due to scheduling conflicts. His character Robert Spearing started a new role at a psilocybin start-up at the end of season 3, but we won’t be following his journey in that new position in season 4.

Beyond that, not much is known about the new episodes.

Earlier this year, Kenny star Conor MacNeill was asked whether his character would be returning to which he said: “Kenny’s gone from Pierpoint – at the end of season 3, Pierpoint is gone itself. I don’t know is the God’s honest truth. It felt very explosive.”

Industry seasons 1-3 are on BBC iPlayer in the UK. The drama airs on HBO in the US.

The Ed Gein Story' Premiere Date, Cast, and More Details

The Ed Gein Story’ Premiere Date, Cast, and More Details

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan are following up again on the success of their 2022 miniseries Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which was originally conceived as a limited series but returned with an acclaimed second installment in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Season 3 centers on Ed Gein, set to be portrayed by Charlie Hunnam, an infamous serial killer whose story inspired some of Hollywood’s biggest horror films.

When will Monster Season 3 premiere?

The exact premiere date for Monster: The Ed Gein Story is October 3 on Netflix.

Who stars in Monster: The Ed Gein Story?

Joining Hunnam is Laurie Metcalf, who will portray his on-screen mother, Augusta Gein. Suzanna Son also stars as Adeline Watkins, Gein’s former romantic partner. Tom Hollander will play Alfred Hitchcock, and Olivia Williams will portray Alma Reville. Additional cast members include Vicky Krieps as Ilse Koch, Olivia Williams as Alma Reville, Lesley Manville as Bernice Worden, Joey Pollari as Anthony Perkins, Charlie Hall as Deputy Worden, Tyler Jacob Moore as Sheriffy Schley, Mimi Kennedy as Dr. Mildred Newman, Will Brill as Tobe Hooper, and Robin Weigert as Enid Watkins.

Is there a trailer for Monster: The Ed Gein Story?

Yes. Netflix dropped the full trailer for the series on September 15, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. With the chilling tagline, “You’re the one that can’t look away,” the trailer shows Hunnam seemingly addressing the viewer directly while leading them through the most nightmarish moments of Gein’s atrocities. Watch the trailer above.

The first teaser for the series was released on September 4, showing an investigator searching through Ed Gein’s home to find fragments of skin scattered throughout. It featured the first glimpse of Hunnam as Gein.

What is Monster Season 3 about?

The synopsis for Monster: The Ed Gein Story reads as follows: “Serial killer. Grave robber. Psycho. In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm – hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare. Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, Gein’s perverse crimes birthed a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades. From Psycho to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Silence of the Lambs, Gein’s macabre legacy gave birth to fictional monsters born in his image and ignited a cultural obsession with the criminally deviant. Ed Gein didn’t just influence a genre — he became the blueprint for modern horror.”

“Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s groundbreaking anthology series returns with its third, most harrowing installment yet,” the synopsis continues. “Monster: The Ed Gein Story tells the story of how one simple man in Plainfield, Wisconsin, became history’s most singular ghoul. He revealed to the world the most horrific truth of all — that monsters aren’t born, they’re made…by us.”

Who was Ed Gein?

Gein was born and raised in Wisconsin, where he endured a toxic household. According to Britannica, his father was an alcoholic, and his mother was verbally abusive. Although his older brother often stood up for him, Ed remained deeply attached to his mother and her religious beliefs. Throughout the 1940s, the family was further torn apart by the tragic deaths of each member, shattering Ed.

According to Biography, Gein became a recluse but continued to work odd jobs to support himself. As residents of Plainfield began to disappear, he became a suspect. Eventually, Gein solved the mystery for them by confessing to two murders during questioning.

Gein’s actions shook up the small town, earning him the nicknames, “Butcher of Plainfield,” “Plainfield Ghoul,” and the “Grandfather of Gore.” Though he was eventually found guilty of murder and later died from cancer in 1984, his gravesite has become a tourist attraction, and his various appearances in the media have kept him alive.

Why did Murphy and Brennan choose Gein?

With so many serial killers to choose from, it begs the question: Why Gein? In an interview with Collider, Murphy shared some insights into the team’s decision-making process, speaking on how influential Gein has been to the horror genre. In addition to Psycho, Murphy noted his impact on films like The Silence of the Lambs, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and American Psycho.

The title, The Original Monster, also revealed by Murphy in the interview, suggests this season will broaden its scope and focus not only on the circumstances surrounding Gein’s crimes, but also the role of the entertainment industry in immortalizing him. Given the series’ previous criticisms, this could be the angle it needs for continued success.

HBO Max Continues Asia Pacific Expansion With 14-Market Launch

by jummy84 September 16, 2025
written by jummy84

Warner Bros. Discovery is accelerating its international streaming push with HBO Max‘s expansion into 14 additional Asia Pacific territories set for Oct. 15.

The rollout will bring the premium streamer to Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Macau, Mongolia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, among other territories, marking another significant milestone in the platform’s aggressive global expansion strategy.

The launch timing aligns strategically with HBO’s upcoming original series “IT: Welcome to Derry,” which premieres Oct. 27. The Stephen King-inspired drama features an ensemble cast led by Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, James Remar, Stephen Rider, Madeleine Stowe, Rudy Mancuso, and Bill Skarsgård. Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs developed the series, which expands the horror universe Muschietti established in his “IT” film duology.

“Following successful launches in Australia and Europe earlier this year, the global expansion of HBO Max continues to bring unparalleled entertainment to more fans across the world,” said JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery. “By the end of the year, HBO Max will be available in more than 100 markets, with more to come in 2026, including major launches in Germany, Italy and the U.K.”

The service will showcase Warner Bros. Discovery’s portfolio spanning HBO’s prestige programming, blockbuster franchises like “Harry Potter” and DC Universe properties, plus content from Cartoon Network and various lifestyle networks including Discovery, TLC, Food Network, ID and HGTV.

New subscribers will access recent theatrical releases including “Superman,” “Sinners” and “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” alongside HBO’s flagship series “House of the Dragon,” “The Last of Us,” “The Penguin,” and “The Pitt.”

The platform will also feature upcoming originals “The Paper” and “MobLand,” reality programming like “Gold Rush,” “Deadliest Catch,” and “90 Day Fiancé,” plus animated favorites spanning “Adventure Time,” “We Bare Bears,” “Tom and Jerry,” “Looney Tunes,” and “The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball.”
