Jimmy Kimmel Writers React to ABC Show Return After Charlie Kirk Joke

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

After ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week following the host’s remarks about the murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, even those who have been part of Kimmel’s inner circle were unsure that the show would ever return.

“I’m truly shocked,” Ned Rice, a former writer for the late night program, tells The Hollywood Reporter about its planned return to the air Tuesday. “I would have bet a lot of money that this was over. After saying you’re suspended, I didn’t think everybody could make nice and [decide,] ‘Let’s try again.’”

Kimmel, a frequent target of President Donald Trump‘s ire for his quips lambasting the administration, commented during his Sept. 15 episode that MAGA Republicans were focused on distancing themselves from Kirk’s alleged murderer, Tyler Robinson. After FCC chairman Brendan Carr fanned the flames of dissension during an appearance on Benny Johnson’s podcast — leading TV affiliate conglomerates Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group to threaten to pull the show in their markets — ABC announced Wednesday that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be suspended indefinitely.

The show’s Tuesday return was presaged by a firestorm of pushback, ranging from protests at the Disney studio lot to viral social media posts from Hollywood figures encouraging others to cancel their subscriptions to such Disney-backed streaming services as Disney+ and Hulu. Even former Disney CEO Michael Eisner voiced concern over the suspension.

Among those protesting at Disney was Joe Strazzullo, a Kimmel writer for six years before his exit in 2021. “As a WGA member, I know the importance of solidarity,” Strazzullo tells THR about why he was compelled to make his voice heard. “We’re used to fighting back against bullies. Bullies are the reason many of us became comedy writers. I’m thrilled my friends at Jimmy Kimmel Live! are headed back to work.”

Although Kimmel’s supporters have heralded the return as a victory for freedom of expression, the fact remains that broadcast late night programs are perceived as increasingly less financially viable amid dwindling ratings. Over the summer, CBS’ Late Show With Stephen Colbert was the first of the current core group of late night shows to get canceled, which spurred speculation about the axing being politically motivated ahead of the recently completed merger between Paramount and Skydance Media.

Rice has plenty of experience with the late night landscape, having written for numerous titles, including Bill Maher’s Real Time and Politically Incorrect, Jay Leno’s Tonight Show and Craig Ferguson’s Late Late Show. “People just don’t watch those shows anymore,” admits Rice, who last wrote for Kimmel in 2009. “So I thought this was a convenient way of ABC unloading Jimmy. It killed two birds, you might say. [Tuesday’s] show is going to be pretty hot. That will be a real television moment, for sure.”

Of course, not everyone who might want to watch Kimmel’s return will get a chance to see it, as Nexstar and Sinclair will not air the show, making it dark on roughly a quarter of ABC stations. Assesses one former Kimmel writer, who asked to remain anonymous: “The Tonight Show premiered 71 years ago. [Since then,] late night has told jokes about 13 presidents, and only one has tried to take down all of late night.” The scribe adds about Sinclair’s politically conservative leanings, “People can just google Sinclair and see what they’re about.”

As for Kimmel’s future, his ABC contract expires in May, and he has previously hinted at looming retirement. For now, Rice expects the host to deliver the same barbs that he always has — “It would be crazy to try to change now” — but still worries about a cultural landscape losing its ability to poke at those with power.

“Americans love topical humor,” he says about late night TV. “We love to hear jokes about the president, about celebrities and so on. Something will have to replace it.”

The Hack producer on why he isn’t expecting another Mr Bates response

In comparison, the phone-hacking scandal is one that many people will have some awareness of, having been the subject of a large volume of mainstream media reports as well as the Leveson Inquiry.

Yet even The Hack screenwriter Jack Thorne confessed to not understanding the true meaning of the story until setting out to write this dramatisation, which stars David Tennant, Robert Carlyle and Mr Bates himself, Toby Jones.

Speaking to RadioTimes.com at The Hack’s launch event, producer Spence candidly said: “You can’t hope for another event like Mr Bates.

“Mr Bates was a coming together of many different factors, and also it was about ordinary working people being treated abhorrently,” he continued.

David Tennant and Robert Carlyle star in The Hack ITV

He added: “I think that’s an easier thing for people to tap into emotionally than what this is, which is a story of corporate and personal abuse of power and the courage it takes to investigate and stand up against that.”

Spence conceded that while he doesn’t expect The Hack “to make the entire country angry” as Mr Bates vs The Post Office did, he and his team can’t deny that they “still dream a little of it”.

Still, he reflected: “You can’t ask for the performance of Mr Bates to be repeated.”

At a Q&A following a screening of the first two episodes, The Hack writer Thorne shared that his perception of the phone-hacking scandal – and its importance – changed fundamentally after researching the details for his scripts.

“My assumption was that the drama was in the journalists behaving badly, whereas actually, it’s in the response of the world to this story being broken by these brave people,” he explained.

“I don’t think it was a complicity – I don’t think there’s anything as structured as complicity involved in this – but there was a complacency [from journalists and politicians].”

He added: “There was a complacency in how people were prepared to look at themselves and look at their relationships. And trying to understand that felt like a very urgent task, and one that I was very, very keen to be involved in.”

The Hack premieres on ITV1 and ITVX on Wednesday 24th September 2025.

Top 10 Hit the Stage in Part 1 of Finale

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

America’s Got Talent is wrapping up its milestone 20th season with a two-night finale event.

The final 10 contestants took to the stage to prove they have what it takes to win during the first half of the Season 20 finale on Tuesday, September 23. While judges Simon Cowell, Sofía Vergara, Howie Mandel and Mel B. will share their thoughts on the Top 10 during the episode, it will be up to America to decide which act will take home the $1 million prize.

Viewers can vote up to 10 times for their favorite performers online or via the AGT or NBC mobile apps. Results will be announced during on the show’s Wednesday, September 24, episode, which will see the final 10 acts perform alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

Scroll below to see everything that went down during Part 1 of AGT‘s two-part Season 20 finale!

Jessica Sanchez

Sanchez said she was “ready to be a star” after appearing on Season 1 of AGT. After some ups and downs in the music industry, she came back to the show better than ever and made it to the Season 20 finale, all while pregnant. Hoping to win the season with her unborn daughter, Sanchez belted out an impressive rendition of Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga‘s “Die With a Smile.”

Sanchez scored a standing ovation from all four judges, with Vergara calling her performance “perfection.” Mel B. praised Sanchez’s vocals as “flawless,” while Mandel dubbed the first act of the night as the “best” act of the night. Cowell, meanwhile, highlighted how Sanchez’s AGT journey highlighted the power of believing in yourself.

LightWire

The group headed into the finale with extra motivation — and pressure — after experiencing a technical malfunction during their Semifinals performance. After earning a Golden Buzzer earlier in the season, the troupe sought to prove that they are a million dollar act with another captivating performance, using special effects and dance to tell a moving story.

Cowell said he “got quite emotional” watching the act, praising the group for their talent on and off the AGT stage. He even went so far as saying the group deserved to win the competition. Mel B. enjoyed the act despite feeling it was “similar” to last week.

Mama Duke

Mama Duke noted that a Golden Buzzer from Mel B. felt like a “full circle moment,” as she looked up to the singer growing up. The rapper wanted to deliver a million dollar finale performance, and did just that with a motivational and uplifting original song.

Mel B. said she would be “first one” to buy front row tickets to a Mama Duke concert and praised her “realness.” Mandel also appreciated her authenticity, while Vergara loved her uniqueness and creativity. Cowell, for his part, said he enjoyed getting to know Mama Duke throughout the AGT season. “Whatever happens, this is an incredible launch pad for whatever you really want,” he added.

Sirca Marea

The trapeze duo have put a lot of hard work into their AGT journey, and have even lived out of their van throughout the competition. The pair lived up to their title as one of the series’ best acrobatic acts with a jaw-dropping, high-flying finale performance full of risky moves and flips. Like their Semifinals routine, Sirca Marea also incorporated several impressive blindfolded tricks.

Mandel’s criticism of the routine feeling “repetitive” was overshadowed by thunderous applause from the audience. Mel B. called the performance “seamless,” while Vergara called it “breathtaking.” Cowell, who gave the pair a standing ovation, said, “That was the best, genuinely, I have ever seen. … That was like an 11 out of 10.”

Micah Palace

Palace went from being frustrated about his musical future to living out his dreams on the NBC competition series. Motivated by a letter from his mom, the aspiring rapper lit up the AGT stage with an energetic song featuring both English and Spanish lyrics.

Vergara called Palace’s performance a “party,” while Cowell said he was “so happy” for the young musician. Handing out some more criticism, Mandel said he preferred Palace’s previous performances to his finale act. Cowell called Mel B.’s comments reminding Palace to act kind to the show’s crew “out of order,” stating he’s only been “really polite and sweet to everyone.”

Leo High School Choir

After securing the last spot in the Finals, the Chicago choir felt inspired heading into the season’s second-to-last episode. Led by choir director, LaDonna Hill, the students (some of whom have since begun college), got the crowd clapping along to their performance of The Script’s “Hall of Fame.”

Mel B. gushed over the group, stating that they’ve “delivered time and time again.” Cowell praised the choir’s ability to “make people feel great,” while Mandel said the act was a “winning, wonderful vibe.” Vergara declared, “You’re the coolest choir that has ever been here on AGT.”

Chris Turner

Turner recalled how he took a “massive risk” pursuing his dream of performing. Once again creating an on-the-spot rap featuring lyric suggestions from the judges and the audience, Turner performed an impressive — and hilarious — song mentioning everything from tampons to baby elephants to Jamaica to Mandel himself. As an added twist, the tempo increased every time Turner completed a rap about a given topic.

For Cowell, Turner could be the act to win the season. Mel B. found herself “lost for words” at Turner’s “raw talent,” and Vergara said she would be “very happy” if he won. Mandel, meanwhile, declared, “You just solidified yourself $1 million.”

Jourdan Blue

Blue said he felt like a “different person” from his AGT audition heading into the finale. Taking Cowell’s Semifinals criticism to “do something unexpected” for his next performance, Blue performed a powerful rendition of “Golden” from the film KPop Demon Hunters. The cherry on top? His parents were there supporting him in the audience.

“It’s over!” Mandel yelled, adding, “I believe you won!” Cowell also loved Blue’s “very smart” song choice, agreeing that he could win the season. Mel B. and Vergara also had nothing but praise for Blue’s latest cover.

Team Recycled

Being on AGT felt like being in the Olympics for the dance troupe. With their Finals performance, the 40-plus-member group wowed the audience and the judges with their grand routing set across both the stage and the auditorium.

For Mandel, the group lived up to the Golden Buzzer he gave them, while Cowell dubbed the performance “spectacular.” Mel B. thought the act was “genius” despite including some “recycled” dance moves, and Vergara thought they were the best they have ever been.

NBC

Steve Ray Ladson

Ladson has come a long way from a small town to the AGT. Chasing his dreams — and a Golden Buzzer from Vergara — led him to the show’s finale. Performing in front of his family, Ladson got his audience doing the “rodeo” with his energetic country rock song. He even showed off banjo skills and vocal chops on a mini stage directly in front of the judges.

“You are already a superstar,” Vergara exclaimed, while Mel B. added, “I’ve never seen an artist like this on AGT that has so much individuality, that sticks in his lane, and knows who he is as a true artist.” Cowell said now is Ladson’s “moment,” and Mandel called his performance a “winning song.”

‘Chief of War’ Finale Battle Scene Explained by Cinematographer

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

The “Chief of War” finale, Episode 9 on the Apple TV+ series, is called “The Black Desert.” And director Jason Momoa does not hold back when it comes to just how “black” and “desert”-like that setting is for the show’s climactic, 30-plus-minute battle between the forces of Hawaii and Maui.

The clash sees Cliff Curtis’ spurned chieftain Keōua, now high on his own supply as the chosen of the volcano Gods, on the one side; then, Kaina Makua’s reluctant, good-hearted king Kamehameha, and Jason Momoa’s vengeful chief of war Ka’iana on the other. The massive armies square up on a desolate lava field, which is not exactly the kind of place you’d want to fight with very sharp spears and minimal padding.

Protestors outside 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' following ABC's indefinite suspension of the program at Hollywood Blvd on September 18, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

It’s also not necessarily the kind of place you’d want to drag a film crew for eight days of shooting intense crowd and stunt sequences. But series cinematographer Matthew Chuang told IndieWire the location the “Chief of War” team found was simply undeniable as the place for the battle where the Kingdom of Hawaii truly came into being.

“We were scouting possible locations for this, and we came across this lava field — this huge lava field on a cliff by the side of the water. I don’t know if you’ve ever been on a lava field before, but it’s like walking on the moon,” Chuang said. “It’s so jagged, and the ground has these peaks and cracks, and it’s really sharp. If you put your hand on the lava, you could cut yourself.”

It took the location scouting team about 30 minutes to walk into the spot around Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park where they would eventually film, in fact, because the ground was so sharp. But Momoa especially pushed for them to find solutions to work and get power to the location safely, so that the show could visually underscore the importance of the battle in Hawaiian history. “He wanted to shoot that on Hawaiian land, you know?” Chuang said. “So they got geologists to come in and looked [at the location], with production, at how we could get our gear in there, and they kind of made it possible.”

With geological information about the safest places to film and how to get gear in and out, though, Chuang and Momoa still had to test a lot of camera and, especially, lighting equipment to ensure that they could withstand the marathon, all-day, and into-night battle sequence. Chuang made the correct story decision for the show to embrace a naturalistic style overall, building frames that continually envelop the characters within the landscape or set them starkly against it. But it meant that during the battle shoot, the production had to really divide and conquer in order to get the coverage they needed.

“We had five units going at the same time. Jason brought in [the other ‘Chief of War’ directors] Brian Mendoza and Justin Chon to help him direct certain sequences. We sectioned off the lava field for different areas to have the forces stand off, then colliding, then a section for certain characters to use, and we split it off that way,” Chuang said. “It was a huge undertaking.”

Momoa, who leads Kamehameha’s forces from the front, had to balance spearing and pummelling his way through Keōua’s army on camera with coordinating other units following other characters through the bloody scrum. You’d expect this to require a huge amount of planning and communication between the camera and stunt teams, and it did. But, reflecting on the experience, Chuang was struck by how getting the scale of the battle right took a full-court press from the entire “Chief of War” crew.

“It was all planned out, but at the same time, incredibly crazy. Everyone on the crew, from costumes to makeup to stunts, were all happening all along the same time. All the PAs and transport — everyone needed to come together to make this possible.  Sometimes, we would start at 3 in the morning and prep at night. Then, as the sun was coming up, we’d start shooting all those sequences.”

The brutality of the black desert is a big part of what makes the sequence feel so visually distinct; it sharpens as the light changes, then grows dark and fiery and almost infernal as night falls, and as the combatants have to wail at each other by the glow of lava coming forth from the Earth. Chuang said that when it comes to the lava-work, visual texture allows the camera and the action to breathe a bit — to not need the kind of shaky-cam or quick movement that forces a sense of intensity. Instead, it comes from the environment and the actors onscreen.

It’s a visual approach Momoa responded to even before Chuang got the job. “The key [to shooting the lava] is to have fog and smoke and atmosphere to light. One of my biggest influences in general is this photographer, Todd Hido. His stuff is this quiet, moody, memory-based work. When I was talking to Jason about coming to shoot the show, we’d just met for the first time over Zoom, and I mentioned Todd. He was like, ‘Oh, I love Todd! He’s a friend.’” Chuang said.

Todd Hido was not the only friend of the show on “Chief of War.” Just as the Apple TV+ series was gearing up to shoot the Episode 9 battle sequences, Mokuʻāweoweo, the summit caldera of Mauna Loa, erupted for the first time since 1984. The production needed to halt for a day to make sure the air quality was safe and it would be safe to film.

“We went out there and started scouting anyway, and it was actually a really great prep day because everyone could get there and settle. But yeah, that volcano hadn’t exploded in like 40 or 50 years, and then the day that we finished [shooting], it stopped erupting,” Chuang said. “Jason and the Hawaiians thought it was a sign from the Gods, like a blessing, you know? So that was really amazing.”

Australia Taps ‘Wolves Always Come at Night’ for Oscar Race

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Australia has chosen Gabrielle Brady‘s climate-focused drama “The Wolves Always Come at Night” as its contender for the best international feature film category at the 2026 Oscars.

The Mongolian-language film, which combines documentary filmmaking techniques with narrative storytelling, centers on herders forced from their land by increasingly destructive weather patterns. Real-life herders Davaasuren Dagvasuren and Otgonzaya Dashzeveg star in the film while also serving as co-writers alongside Brady.

Australian selection committee members unanimously backed the choice, with a spokesperson noting: “The Australian selection committee are unanimous in their recommendation and extremely pleased to put forward ‘The Wolves Always Come at Night’ as Australia’s official submission to the Academy Awards. A striking and original portrait of a family deeply affected by climate change and its devastating effects on their traditional way of life, cultural values and homeland. A significant and brilliantly crafted feature film that everyone in the committee regarded as requisite cinema viewing.”

Brady’s sophomore feature following “Island of the Hungry Ghosts” has built considerable momentum on the festival circuit since its Toronto Film Festival debut in the Platform Competition. The film subsequently screened at several international festivals including London, Zurich, IDFA, San Francisco International, True/False, and Sydney.

The filmmaker said: “My hope is that our film brings audiences closely into the lives of Davaa and Zaya, who face the sudden upheaval of climate displacement, but who also find ways to resist in the face of irreversible change. As our world confronts the growing reality of climate migration, sharing this story on a global stage fills me and our whole team with immense hope and pride.”

The film’s subjects added: “We are very proud that the film has been selected in this way. We hope this will lead to more people to understand the great changes happening in our pastures and landscapes now – with global warming deeply affecting us, and so many others around the world.”

The production represents an unusual three-way international collaboration between Germany, Australia, and Mongolia – reportedly the first of its kind. Rita Walsh (“The Assistant,” “Buoyancy”) produced alongside Chromosom Film’s Julia Niethammer and Guru Media’s Ariunaa Tserenpil.

Screen Australia provided the primary production funding, supplemented by private investment from WeirAnderson Films and Storming Donkey Productions. Additional support came from broadcasters BBC Storyville and SWR Arte, plus distributor Madman Films. Cinephil is handling international sales.

The producing team said: “Our beautiful international collaboration was a deeply important and enriching experience for all of us. Now, being selected by the Australian committee is a hugely special moment for our film team from Australia, but also for all of our team in Mongolia, Germany, Colombia, the U.K., and the U.S. It is such an honor to compete alongside so many other outstanding films.”

The selection continues Australia’s nearly three-decade participation in the international feature category, dating back to 1996. Previous Australian submissions have included indigenous-language films “Ten Canoes” (2006), the shortlisted “Samson and Delilah” (2009), “The Rocket” (2013), and Oscar-nominated “Tanna” (2016).

Brady’s film will also compete in the documentary feature category.

The Oscar international feature shortlist will be announced on Dec. 16 and the final five nominees will be announced on Jan. 22.

How Long Can Nexstar & Sinclair Keep Jimmy Kimmel Sidelined?

by jummy84 September 24, 2025
written by jummy84

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is returning to ABC, but not in about one-quarter of U.S. households. Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair have said they still are not going to air the late-night show on their stations.

Between the two major station owners, the ban will affect viewers in dozens of markets, including sizable ones like Washington, D.C., Seattle, St. Louis and Portland, OR.

Those are some pretty large holes in the clearance map for a show that has pulled in $70 million in 2025 to date in advertising revenue, according to ad tracking firm iSpot. Its promotional value for Disney‘s studio and streaming operations is also being diminished during both the show itself and its commercial breaks, with vertical promotions of Disney titles accounting for about 12% of ad time. The media giant, having taken some lumps from viewers and Hollywood during the nearly week-long crisis, will now be taking a harder look at its options with Sinclair and Nexstar.

Kimmel’s future on the groups’ airwaves, which entered a limbo state after he joked about Republicans’ reaction to conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s shooting death, depends to some extent on the tenor of his post-suspension comments and the reaction to them. President Trump’s war on the media and his attack-dog FCC Chairman, Brendan Carr, have created a situation without precedent, making predicting anything a hazardous prospect.

Nevertheless, the path from here will still be shaped by a legal and business framework established long before the streaming era. Disney, Nexstar and Sinclair have declined to say anything other than carefully worded, limited statements. In search of answers to a handful of key questions about the Kimmel affair, Deadline spoke with a number of stakeholders in local television. Here are some of the mains Qs and As:

How long could the standoff last?

Even if it’s only a few days, the industry could be in fairly uncharted territory given the sheer volume of the holdouts. (For comparison with one notable past flash point, it’s worth recalling that when Ellen DeGeneres’ character came out as gay on the sitcom Ellen in 1997, only one ABC affiliate, in Birmingham, AL, refused to air the show despite widespread controversy.)

“It depends how crazy it gets,” one veteran broadcast executive told Deadline in assessing how long it could go. “It depends who fights the first legal battle and whether ABC wants to go after them in some way, shape or form, how aggressive they want to get. ABC  will turn the other cheek for a while until they don’t want to turn the other cheek anymore.”

Kirk’s memorial last Sunday, which was widely televised and included notable comments from the slain activist’s widow, Erica Kirk. “Once she said she forgave the killer, she sent a unifying message,” the exec continued. “She was the most important person in there.”

Carr’s exuberance (including his open threats against Disney and his gleeful Office-meme-sharing stance on social media) landed awkwardly with some prominent Republicans, including Senators Rand Paul and Ted Cruz. The fact that it is not a strictly partisan issue could ultimately help persuade Sinclair and Nexstar to quietly backtrack. “They’ve scored their points,” one local station staffer said. “How are they going to tell GMs who need audience to keep standing on principle?”

Could the affiliate agreements between the stations and ABC help force a resolution?

The agreements, which typically last three years, include a set of provisions for both stations and networks. “Normally, the local station has rights to pre-empt up to a certain amount of times, unless it’s a national emergency,” the broadcast exec said. If the stations exceed that number, they lose rights to air that show and the network can shift the show and its affiliated station elsewhere in a given market.

Can ABC use high-profile programming like sports or major unscripted shows as leverage and threaten to pull it if Nexstar or Sinclair don’t budge on Kimmel?

Affiliate agreements prevent networks from cherry-picking certain shows to use as leverage. One key weapon in most companies’ arsenals in disputes with affiliates is the NFL. While ABC doesn’t have as much of the top-viewed league as rivals CBS, NBC and Fox, it simulcast ESPN’s Monday Night Football as well as key NBA and college football telecasts. And in February 2027, Disney has rights to the Super Bowl, which will strengthen its hand, even if only in the next round of affiliate deal negotiations.

Veterans of the local TV trenches note one particular pocket of revenue is certainly not far from the minds of those locked in this dispute: digital retransmission consent dollars. Traditional pay-TV operators like cable and satellite companies are covered by affiliate deals that create close to a 50-50 split when its comes to retransmission consent fees. Digital fees, however – a growing bucket thanks to streaming bundles like YouTube TV – are controlled by the national networks and are not shared with stations.

“This is such a dysfunctional relationship,” one station group alum says of relations between networks and affiliates. At 8 million subscribers, YouTube TV is now larger than nearly all cable and satellite operators. “You would think with that growth, the idea would be to work together so that everyone can make money. Instead they screw affiliates over and just hand money to talent or to the NFL.”

Couldn’t ABC just shift Kimmel to a different station in the same market?

They could try, and as mentioned above there could be a way to enforce agreements in order to change the channel, but doing do is a time-consuming and tricky process. ABC did shuffle its Miami affiliate this year, parting ways with a station owned by billionaire Warren Buffett after failing to reach terms. But doing so in larger numbers across the country would run up against the very trend that helped motivate Nexstar and Sinclair to yank Kimmel in the first place: consolidation. Both companies have pending deals in front of the FCC, meaning they wanted to make a show of complying with the wishes of agency chairman Brendan Carr and President Trump.

Those same forces, which have allowed a wave of M&A deals to create “super groups” over the past decade mean that ABC would be unlikely to find available independent stations, particularly in smaller markets. And if an available one were owned by Tegna, which has a proposed $6.2 billion merger agreement with Nexstar, it is highly unlikely that Tegna station would pick up Kimmel.

It’s 2025 – couldn’t ABC just put Kimmel on YouTube or ABC.com for free, or move it behind the pay wall on Hulu?

There’s some logic to that kind of move, but it would provoke other local affiliates who have stuck by the show. As streaming has become ubiquitous, major media companies like Disney have repeatedly Those relationships between affiliates and networks explains why shows don’t stream on the same night they air on pay-TV, but instead the next day.

Disney, remember, has its own pay-TV bundle, Hulu + Live TV, but is prevented from favoring it for strategic purposes. Those limitations were revealed during a carriage fight between Disney and Spectrum parent Charter Communications in 2023. Even at the peak of that fight, Disney never told viewers to subscribe to Hulu + Live TV for fear of getting sued by other operators.

When streaming was in its infancy, network parents experimented with permitting live streams of shows also airing on networks. Today, networks don’t want to give consumers even more reason not to subscribe to pay-TV. Of course, exiting late-night altogether, as CBS is doing with Stephen Colbert’s Late Show exit next May, is a distinct possibility for ABC and Disney. “While the show is still on, though, why would you want to do without all those markets?” asks one exec. “And why would they want to do without the show, given that it will still out-rate local news at that hour?”

Lynette Rice contributed to this story.

‘Baywatch’ Reboot Coming to Fox in 2026-27

by jummy84 September 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Fox is putting Baywatch back on patrol.

The network has placed a series order for an update of the lifeguard drama, a staple of syndicated TV in the 1990s. The new Baywatch is set to air 12 episodes in the 2026-27 season and comes from Fox Entertainment and Fremantle, which holds the rights to the original series.

Matt Nix (Burn Notice, CBS’ True Lies) will serve as showunner on the new series and executive produce with Baywatch creators Michael Berk, Greg Bonann and Doug Schwartz, as well as Dante Di Loreto.

“In its first run, Baywatch defined an entire era of beach life and elevated lifeguards to an iconic status. Now, with our partners at Fremantle, this television juggernaut is set for a modern-day comeback,” Fox Television Network president Michael Thorn said in a statement. “Together, Fox and Fremantle, along with Matt Nix and original co-creator Greg Bonann, will bring the California dream to a whole new generation of fans with fresh stories, rising stars and all the spectacle that make the Baywatch franchise a global sensation.”

Baywatch premiered as an NBC movie in 1989 and aired one season on the network in 1989-90 before moving into syndication for the rest of its run. The series starred David Hasselhoff as the head of a team of lifeguards in Southern California (and later Hawaii). Over its 11 seasons, the cast also featured Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Parker Stevenson, Nicole Eggert, David Charvet, Carmen Electra and Jason Momoa, among others.

“Baywatch has always been a treasured asset in Fremantle’s portfolio and remains one of the most iconic series in television history globally,” said Christian Vesper, CEO global drama at Fremantle. “We have found the perfect partners in Fox to help us maintain this legacy. With Matt Nix at the helm, we are in great hands, as he excels at telling engaging and entertaining stories. Our goal is to reconnect with existing fans while also introducing a new generation to the world of these famous lifeguards.”

Fox’s description of the new Baywatch will feature “all the adrenaline-fueled rescues, tangled relationships, complicated chemistry and beachside heroics that defined the original — now with an entirely new cast, contemporary trappings, tensions and challenges, and a renewed mission to protect Southern California’s shoreline.”

Fox aired another lifeguard series, the Hawaii-set Rescue: Hi-Surf, last season, but the show was canceled in May.

The original series also spawned a spinoff, Baywatch Nights, in which Hasselhoff’s character, Mitch Buchanon, joins his friend Garner Ellerbee (Gregory Alan Williams) in a private detective agency. Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron starred in a 2017 movie adaptation, and a Hulu docuseries last year featured interviews with a number of alumni.

Who is MAFS UK 2025 bride Leigh? Age, job and relationship status explained

Viewers will have to tune in further to see how the couple’s wedding day fares, but in the meantime, why not get to know a little more about Leigh?

Read on for everything you need to know about Married at First Sight UK 2025 bride Leigh.

Who is Leigh on Married at First Sight UK?

Leigh. Matt Monfredi / Channel 4

Age: 30

Job: NHS clinical coder

From: Romford

Instagram: @leighharrisx

Leigh is a 30-year-old NHS clinical coder from Romford who loves getting glam and dressed up. But that mustn’t fool people, as she has a passionate feisty side and is not afraid to speak her mind when challenged.

She has been single for around a year and hates the traditional dating game, refusing to download the dating apps. Leigh was previously engaged and was left heartbroken and lost all of her confidence.

But now, she is more confident than ever before, and is serious about finding long-lasting love and ready to find her happily ever after.

What has Leigh said about her relationship with Leah on Married at First Sight UK?

Leigh hasn’t publicly commented on her relationship with Leah at the time of writing, but E4 did provide an exclusive look at their wedding and it all seems like it might be an awkward one.

During a first look at the couple posing for wedding photos, Leigh seemed slightly reluctant to pose for photos with her new bride.

When asked to come in closer for the photo, Leigh said: “No, it’s a bit much.” And when asked if they could kiss on the cheek, Leigh responded: “No, it’s even weirder… You’ve asked five times now, no.”

However this didn’t seem to deter Leah as she laughed and told the cameras: “Leigh has definitely got a fiery side.”

Married at First Sight UK continues on Tuesday 23rd September at 9pm on E4.

First Look at Robert Carlyle as Sherlock Holmes in Season 2 Trailer

For those wondering how Watson would reveal that Sherlock Holmes is alive since Robert Carlyle was cast in the recurring role, well, TV Insider’s exclusive debut of the Season 2 trailer ahead of the October 13 premiere appears to do just that!

“Everything changes, Dr. Watson. Everything,” someone says as we watch Dr. John Watson (Morris Chestnut) leave Laila (Tika Sumpter) in bed. He then finds someone raiding his fridge. “My dear Watson,” Sherlock Holmes greets him to his surprise.

Watson began with the presumed death of the iconic detective, Watson’s best friend, at Reichenbach Falls when he faced off with the villain Moriarty (Randall Park). But over the course of the first season, Moriarty was revealed to be alive, messed with Watson’s work, and, ultimately, died due to the doctor’s actions. Since there hadn’t been a body, the major question had been whether Sherlock survived as well. Now, we have the answer.

CBS

The trailer, which you can watch above, offers a look at Watson’s work as “the world’s greatest doctective,” more from Sherlock, and Watson’s ex-wife Mary (Rochelle Aytes) insisting, “You push boundaries. This is what you do.” Is that related to her mother?

Watson is kicking off its second season with Mary’s mother the patient in the premiere. “A Son in the Oven.” Watson and his fellows take her on as their patient when she accidentally poisons herself while suffering from a rare form of dementia that’s progressing with impossible speed.

“She is suffering from a mysterious and fast progressing form of dementia, believing that she is 25 years old and pregnant with her first child,” executive producer Craig Sweeny told us for our Fall Preview.

As for Watson‘s version of the dynamic between the doctor and Sherlock Holmes, that, now, “is a work in progress,” according to Chestnut. The two are also equals, with Watson having more time under his belt as a detective with his medical cases, as we saw in Season 1.

“Morris is so commanding in the role of Watson that I stopped worrying about the character sharing the spotlight with Sherlock Holmes,” Sweeny shared.

He also teased that Sherlock “very much has his own agenda,” which will have him “dropping in and out of Watson’s life in Pittsburgh. Holmes doesn’t share [everything] with Watson at first, and the parts he does share leaves Watson a little unsettled.”

What do you think of the first look at Robert Carlyle as Sherlock Holmes? What are you hoping to see this season on the CBS drama? Let us know in the comments section below.

'The Hand That Rocks the Cradle' Trailer: Maika Monroe in Remake

‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ Trailer: Maika Monroe in Remake

by jummy84 September 23, 2025
written by jummy84

Over the course of her career, Maika Monroe has emerged as one of our most reliable modern scream queens. Between “The Guest,” “It Follows,” “Watcher,” “Greta,” “Villains,” “Longlegs,” “Tau,” and many more, when you see her name in horror movie credits, you can usually bet that Monroe will be the blood-soaked final girl we’re all cheering for to the bitter end.

So that makes it all the more interesting that, for her next horror feature, a remake of Curtis Hanson’s 1992 horror hit “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” (which starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra), Monroe is this time playing the baddie. Per the film‘s official synopsis: “Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Caitlin Morales, an upscale suburban mom who brings a new nanny, Polly Murphy (Maika Monroe), into her home, only to discover she is not the person she claims to be.”

'The Bride!'

If you’ve seen Hanson’s film or are at all familiar with its concept, you know that the nanny isn’t our sympathetic heroine here. She’s the one doing the rocking (of all kinds! physically, mentally, and emotionally!) and upending the lives of a seemingly nice and normal suburban family. What a delicious twist for Monroe.

The remake, directed by “Huesera: The Bone Woman” filmmaker Michelle Garza Cervera will arrive on Hulu just in time for Halloween. It also stars Raúl Castillo, Martin Starr, Mileiah Vega, Riki Lindhome, and Shannon Cochran, and is written by Micah Bloomberg based on a screenplay by Amanda Silver. The producers are Michael Schaefer, Mike LaRocca, and Ted Field, and the executive producers are Michael Napoliello, Maria Frisk, and Seth William Meier.

“The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” will start streaming on Hulu on Wednesday, October 22. Check out the film’s first trailer below.
