Lyrical Media New CEO: Jonathan Faust

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Lyrical Media has brought on The North Road Company exec Jonathan Faust as its new chief financial officer.

In his position, Faust will oversee Lyrical’s financing workflow across film, television, video games, animation, graphic novels and venture investing. Per Lyrical, Faust “will play a key role in evaluating and sourcing new opportunities, building out new strategic verticals, supporting Lyrical’s financial planning and operations, and managing ongoing projects and investments in conjunction with the company’s leadership.”

Most recently, Faust served as vice president of business development and operations at Peter Chernin’s The North Road Company, where he co-led growth initiatives and strategic planning across the company’s portfolio. Prior to that role, Faust was director of financial planning and analysis at North Road. Faust has previously held executive role at Words + Pictures and Skydance Media.

Founded by CEO Alexander Black in 2021, Lyrical Media’s upcoming slate of films and TV series includes Adam Wingard’s “Onslaught” and Michael Sarnoski’s “The Death of Robin Hood” starring Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer, and Bill Skarsgård, both of which will be distributed by A24, and Neon co-production “The Young People,” directed by Osgood Perkins and starring Lola Tung and Nico Parker, as well as adaptations of Emily Henry’s “Funny Story,” Brynne Weaver’s “Butcher & Blackbird,” and Lauren Roberts’ “Powerless.”

In addition to its robust film and TV slate, Lyrical Media recently launched Lyrical Games, a new privately funded game publisher with a commitment to empowering creators of high-quality indie games.

“Jonathan brings a rare combination of strategic insight, operational expertise, and deep knowledge of media finance that will be critical as we continue to expand our multi-platform vision,” Black said. “He’s exactly the kind of leader we need to help us scale responsibly while maintaining the creative agility that sets Lyrical apart. I’m thrilled to have him on board as we continue to grow and push the boundaries of storytelling across film, television, games, and beyond.”

“I’ve always admired Lyrical’s ability to back bold, original voices and bring them to the screen with real scale,” Faust added. “My goal is to ensure financial strategies, partnerships, and infrastructure are all aligned so the team can keep taking big swings and delivering stories that surprise and resonate with audiences across every platform. Joining Lyrical now is a unique opportunity to build on what they’ve already achieved and help fuel the next chapter of ambitious, creator-driven storytelling.”

Antigravity Academy Screenwriters Camp Year 3 Opens Submissions In October

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: Antigravity Academy, the production company of Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Carlos López Estrada (Raya and the Last Dragon, Blindspotting), will be offering a third edition of its flagship Screenwriters Camp, a program that helps first-time feature filmmakers from the U.S. and Canada develop their debut projects, under the mentorship of industry veterans.

Launched in 2023, with the intention to create new pathways for artists who have historically lacked access to traditional industry networks, the program kicks off with a week-long intensive next May and will then see writers go through several months of continued development of their works through additional drafts, virtual sessions, and a dedicated period of industry exposure.

Abiram Brizuela, former Director of Artist Community at the Sundance Institute, is once again leading the program, with support from Unapologetic Projects co-CEO Chris Quintos Cathcart. The camp will be produced by Antigravity’s Head of Production, Valerie Bush, with creative development led by Antigravity founder López Estrada, Antigravity Head of Film & TV, Holly Stanton, and screenwriter Anna Moskowitz.

Applications for the 2026 Antigravity Academy Screenwriters Camp will open on October 13th and close on November 3rd. Only filmmakers with no previously produced feature films will be considered. All applicants must be over 18 and able to attend an in-person intensive from May 27th to June 1st, 2026, at a private resort in Lake Arrowhead, California. All travel and lodging expenses will be covered by Antigravity Academy.

In a statement to Deadline, Antigravity’s Brizuela and López Estrada said, “Our company was built with the mission of supporting the next generation of great storytellers, and it fills us with pride to see fellows from our first two cohorts already shining within our industry. We can’t wait to continue meeting the filmmakers who will be responsible for telling the most necessary stories of tomorrow.”

Antigravity’s first produced project, Dìdi (弟弟), written and directed by Sean Wang, premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and won the Audience Award as well the Special Jury Award-Ensemble. The film was acquired by Focus Features and later went on to win two Independent Spirit Awards.

2025 participants in the company’s Screenwriters Camp included Alex Bush (Thaw), Alexander Chard (Fire Over the Hills), Bobby Herrera (Pink Casa), Emma Van Slyck and Tommy Tang (Dead Language), JP Bradham (Egg Bound), and Monisha Dadlani (The Fiddler). The inaugural cohort included A.J. Riggins (Look at Toine), Alexandra Qin (Thirstygirl), Andrés Perez-Duarte (The Last Supper), Carrie Carusone (Somebody Said Nobody), Jay Pendarvis Jr. (Brother’s Keeper), and SM Goldberger (Your Heart Is a Hummingbird).

Streaming Ratings Aug 25-31, 2025

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters has set several records over its pop culture-dominating run in the summer. What it hadn’t done previously was lead the overall rankings on Nielsen’s streaming charts.

Emphasis on “hadn’t”: In the final week of August, the movie took over the No. 1 overall spot with its highest weekly viewing total to date in the United States, 1.12 billion minutes. It marked the movie’s 11th straight appearance in the Nielsen rankings, extending a record for a streaming original film that it set a week earlier.

Another movie, The Thursday Murder Club, came in second overall for Aug. 25-31 with 1.03 billion viewing minutes. That narrowly beat Netflix’s YA series My Life With the Walter Boys, which recorded 987 million minutes of viewing for the week of its season two premiere.

Wednesday ceded the No. 1 overall spot it had held for the previous three weeks, dropping to fifth place with 870 million minutes. It will likely move back up in the next set of rankings as Netflix released the second half of the season on Sept. 3. Netflix also had the No. 4 title with docuseries Katrina: Come Hell or High Water (911 million minutes).

The Summer I Turned Pretty hit another high for Prime Video with 717 million minutes of watch time as it entered the home stretch of its third season. Marvel’s movie Thunderbolts (702 million minutes) also cracked the overall top 10 the week of its streaming premiere on Disney+.

Nielsen’s streaming ratings cover viewing on TV sets only and don’t include minutes watched on computers or mobile devices. The ratings only measure U.S. audiences, not those in other countries. The top streaming titles for Aug. 25-31, 2025 are below.

Every Major ‘Blue Bloods’ Cast Exit, Explained

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

While other TV procedurals struggled with cast turnover, the Blue Bloods roster stayed relatively consistent for its 14-season run: Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Len Cariou, and Tom Selleck played Reagan family members from the CBS drama’s 2010 start to its 2024 end. (And now Wahlberg is filming the spinoff Boston Blue, hitting CBS on Friday, October 17, at 10/9c.)

That said, some of the Reagans’ colleagues and family members came and went on Blue Bloods. Below, see every series regular who left the show early, plus the major recurring actors who exited before the curtain call.

Ida Lupino's 'The Hard Way,' Now on Blu-ray, Is a Career Best

Ida Lupino’s ‘The Hard Way,’ Now on Blu-ray, Is a Career Best

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

When Ida Lupino was working as an actress under contract to Warner Bros. in the 1940s, she joked that she was “the poor man’s Bette Davis,” partly because she tended to be offered parts that Davis had rejected.

Lupino might have been unhappy with the caliber of many of her roles — she was suspended by studio head Jack Warner after refusing assignments in “King’s Row” and “Juke Girl” — but her sojourn at Warner Bros. yielded a memorable body of work that has aged far better than those of many of Lupino’s contemporaries.

That’s largely thanks to Lupino’s collaborations with two great — and still somewhat underrated — Warner contract directors, Raoul Walsh and Vincent Sherman. Walsh and Sherman both recognized Lupino’s superior intellect and resistance to unearned sentimentality. They figured out how to showcase her edgy sensibility in a series of powerful, uncompromising films: “They Live By Night,” “High Sierra,” and “The Man I Love” for Walsh; “The Hard Way” and “In Our Time” for Sherman.

Taken together, these movies, along with later projects like Nicolas Ray’s “On Dangerous Ground” and Don Siegel’s “Private Hell 36,” make a case for Lupino as the quintessential noir heroine — not necessarily a femme fatale, but a performer whose combination of weary cynicism, razor-sharp intelligence, and deeply buried vulnerability perfectly expressed the contradictions and anxieties of America in a time of war and its aftermath. There was something so bleak and hopeless about Lupino’s onscreen presence that even movies one wouldn’t traditionally classify as film noir became noir simply by virtue of Lupino appearing in them.

“The Hard Way” is a case in point. Its story, in which Lupino plays a kind of stage mother (the actress she’s managing is actually her little sister) who manipulates everyone in her path to get her and her sibling out of their miserable life in a polluted coal mining town, is essentially an old-fashioned show business melodrama. Yet Lupino brings such intensity and anger to her performance that the film’s register shifts into something far darker — so dark, in fact, that a prologue and epilogue Jack Warner insisted be added to make the movie more glamorous focus on a suicide attempt!

Typically, Lupino didn’t want the part (another of Bette Davis’ cast-offs) when it was offered to her, and according to Sherman’s memoir “Studio Affairs,” she never got over her lack of faith in the movie. (“This picture is going to stink, and I’m going to stink in it,” she told the director.) To make matters worse for Sherman, author Irwin Shaw, who wrote the underlying source material, opposed Sherman directing the picture — he wanted William Wyler or Howard Hawks.

Sherman soldiered on — even as Jack Warner told him no one wanted to see a movie about “dirty people in the coal mines” — and directed Lupino to the performance of her career. As Helen Chernen, an unhappily married woman stuck in a miserable town with a husband she hates and a little sister with seemingly unattainable dreams, Lupino oozes resentment, frustration, and smug superiority. Yet without ever downplaying her character’s many off-putting qualities or forcing any kind of sentiment, she subtly conveys the disillusionment and disenfranchisement that led her to go dark — it’s an extraordinarily complex portrayal.

Lupino is aided considerably by Sherman’s expressive visual style, in which Helen’s surroundings seem to be physical manifestations of her neuroses; the early scenes set in the coal mining town are particularly effective and oppressive, with Sherman and cinematographer James Wong Howe smothering the characters in a smoggy haze. Once Helen gets her little sister Katie (Joan Leslie) to Broadway, the visuals become more glamorous and the editing snappier — courtesy of some dazzling montages cut by Lupino’s future “Private Hell 36” director Don Siegel — but the darkness in Lupino and the other characters not only remains, it gets even more scabrous.

The tension between show business glitz and a persistent undercurrent of backstabbing betrayal (nearly everyone in the movie seems to have malicious intentions at one point or another, and even the most “positive” characters work against the interests of people they love out of insecurity) is just one of the many productive oppositions at work throughout the movie, and an example of why Sherman was such a deft Hollywood craftsman.

Throughout “The Hard Way,” Sherman finds ways to serve the demands of his corporate overlords without softening his material; the aforementioned prologue and epilogue are a perfect example. When Warner said it took too long for Lupino to enter her glamorous phase in the narrative, Sherman added a framing device in which a suicidal Lupino narrated the tale from a hospital bed. In a literal sense, the scenes give Warner what he asked for: Lupino in makeup, looking more like a movie star than in her dingy coal mining town scenes. Yet by adding the suicide component, Sherman makes the movie even more grim and cynical than it already was, turning a studio edict into an artistic benefit.

“The Hard Way” is newly available on Blu-ray from Warner Archive, and it’s yet another of that label’s exquisite presentations (they also put out a must-see edition of the Lupino-Walsh classic “The Man I Love”). Aside from providing a chance to see Sherman and Howe’s lustrous images in an immaculate transfer, the disc reminds us what a truly great actress Lupino was.

In recent years she has been exalted for her pioneering work as a director on searing noir classics like “Outrage” (1950) and “The Hitch-hiker” (1953), as she should be — her status as one of the few women directing personal, powerful features during Hollywood’s classical studio era has been correctly recognized by cinephile admirers like Allison Anders and Martin Scorsese as something worth celebrating.

However, Lupino’s elevated status as an auteur has diverted attention away from her equally impressive work in front of the camera — she’s not often thought of as being on the same level as more famous Warner contract actresses, such as Joan Crawford, Olivia de Havilland, and Lauren Bacall. She should be, and “The Hard Way” proves it. Lupino was no “poor man’s Bette Davis.” She was a star whose talents were every bit as formidable as those of her better-known peer.

“The Hard Way” is now available on Blu-ray from Warner Archive.

Sundance Best Director Winner Valeria Hofmann Snags Spanish ICAA Grant

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Madrid-based Amore Cine, founded by Paz Lázaro, Juan Pablo Félix and Edson Sidonie, has boarded “Dæmon,” the debut feature of Chile’s Valeria Hofmann, who snagged best director for short “AliEN0089” at Sundance 2023. It joins Chile’s Maquina, launched last year at the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Described as a body-horror techno-romance best encapsulated by its logline “In a world where you can print DNA at home, why not print your own boyfriend?” the drama dwells on the same themes of digital intimacy, grief and transformation that Hofmann explored in her short, which also scored best film at the world’s leadig short film fest, Clermont-Ferrand, in its Labo competition, among other accolades.

Set in the Chilean coastal town of Valparaíso, it follows Liz, a solitary content moderator who finds unexpected intimacy in a virtual lover. But when she learns he’s not just code but a consciousness trapped within her computer, obsession takes root. As reality and simulation begin to collapse into each other, Liz becomes consumed with building him a physical form using a bioprinter that runs on blood — even if it means risking her own humanity.

The project clinched first place in Spain’s ICAA Selective Grant, outshining more than 400 submissions and cementing its position as one of the more highly anticipated Latin American–European co-productions in development.

With the ICAA production grant secured, “Dæmon” has returned to San Sebastián’s industry platform this year, and is aiming to start principal photography in 2026. The producers are actively seeking additional international partners.

“This project brings together everything we believe in: a director with an urgent and singular voice that is going to leave everyone on the edge of their cinema seats, a genre film that takes the stakes to a whole new level, along an international reach and a creative and strategic collaboration between Amore and Maquina that is already visionary and fun,” said Amore Cine’s Lázaro, who added: “We are very thankful the ICAA selection team has scored the film the highest in the already extremely talented and competitive pool of excellent filmmakers in Spain.”

“From the very beginning, ‘Dæmon’ captivated us with Valeria Hofmann’s audacious and deeply personal female gaze breaking into genre cinema. Supporting a debut of such ambition alongside this wonderful team of producers has been truly exciting, each one bringing an energy that makes the project grow in an organic and inspiring way” said Úrsula Budnik, co-founder of Maquina alongside Augusto Matte and Fernando Bascuñán.

She added: “We are especially thrilled to have sealed this co-production with Amore and to join forces with Paz Lázaro, whose vision and talent we deeply admire. For me, this journey is also about amplifying a new voice that dares to transform not only narratives, but also how we imagine women leading the future of cinema.”

Launched in San Sebastian last year, Maquina brings together the partners’ respective companies, Horamágica, Deptford Film and Planta Producciones, in a bid to pool their resources and bolster Chile’s standing in the international co-production arena.

Founded in Madrid in 2023, Amore Cine is known for its strong Ibero-American focus. Its early productions have already earned major recognition, including “The Message” by Iván Fund, which snagged the Silver Bear Jury Prize at this year’s Berlinale.

Tom Cruise Was 1st Call for Chad Powers Prosthetic Advice

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

Tom Cruise is always in Glen Powell‘s corner.

After Powell booked the role of Chad Powers in his upcoming Hulu show of the same name and realized how crucial it was to get the prosthetic makeup right, he says his first instinct was to call up his pal Cruise. In the six-episode series, based on Eli Manning’s ESPN spoof video, Powell plays disgraced quarterback Russ Holliday, who goes uncover as Chad Powers to get a second chance at playing football. Cruise also went through a big physical transformation with the help of special effects makeup for his role as Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder.

“Tom was extremely helpful in helping to not go down the wrong path in terms of the prosthetics,” Powell tells The Hollywood Reporter. “He was, as is with a lot in my life, he was my first call (laughs) where I was like, OK, you know, very early on we were breaking the show, I was like, ‘OK, how do you actually get away with this?’ Because Les Grossman is an iconic character, and a very three-dimensional character.”

Powell continued, “I definitely always use him as a resource. He’s kind of played every character in the book. So on the prosthetics, he really kind of pointed us in the right direction to make sure he was really gonna work. Because if you don’t buy the fact that the world believes that this is a real human, the whole experiment falls apart. So yeah, we thank TC for that.”

Ever since the two met to work on 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, Cruise has become a mentor to Powell. In a May 2024 cover story with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell noted that when he auditioned for the film and didn’t get the part of Rooster, Cruise convinced him to play Hangman by explaining how he selects great projects and then makes the roles great. The advice earned its way into Powell’s “icon wisdom” journal.

Additionally, when Powell was promoting the 2023 rom-com, Anyone But You, with co-star Sydney Sweeney, rumors of an on-set romance appeared on gossip sites. Powell leaned into the advice Cruise had shared with him. “I kept coming back to something that Cruise had said, which was, ‘The world’s going to become really loud, and it’s your decision how much you turn up or down the volume.’”

Like Cruise does for his projects, Powell is also executive producing Chad Powers. He also co-created the series with Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). Eli and Peyton Manning also serve as exec producers, among others. Perry Mattfeld, Steve Zahn, Quentin Plair, Frankie A. Rodriguez, Wynn Everett, Clayne Crawford, Xavier Mills, Colton Ryan and Toby Huss round out its cast.

Chad Powers drops on the streamer on Sep. 30 with two episodes. New episodes will premiere on Tuesdays for the remaining four weeks.

Five rookies who will decide the Ryder Cup 2025 – and what their teammates think of them

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

The performance of rookies is a key factor at any Ryder Cup but given the general wisdom is that this could be the tightest contest in years, it is no stretch to suggest that the five first-timers will decide who is celebrating on Sunday.

But who are the Team Europe and Team USA rookies? And what do their respective teammates think of them?

Team Europe

Rasmus Højgaard

Rasmus Højgaard. Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images Photo by Andrew Redington/Getty Images

It speaks to the continuity of Team Europe that the only change from their victory two years ago sees rookie Rasmus Højgaard replace his twin Nicolai.

The 24-year-old is the youngest player at the Ryder Cup 2025 but has more experience than most debutants. The Dane was part of the team in Rome, where he drove his brother and vice-captain Thomas Bjorn’s buggy – a move that now looks something of a masterstroke.

Højgaard, who earned his place by finishing fifth in the European qualification standings, is the lowest player on the World Rankings (58) outside LIV Golf star John Rahm. He’s long off the tee, which should suit Bethpage Black, but his short game and inconsistent putting are a concern.

Already a five-time winner on the DP World Tour, the Team Europe rookie has sky-high potential and will likely be paired with one of their veterans on Friday or Saturday. That could well be Shane Lowry, who outlined his faith in him when he offered Højgaard some advice ahead of his debut.

Speaking on ‘Why Golf’ podcast, Lowry said: “Just be himself. Don’t try and be anyone else, just be yourself. No matter how you are feeling, everyone else is feeling like that too. No matter how nervous you feel on the first tee, the guy standing beside you is feeling that too.

“You have to remember that is the reason you play golf and this is what it is all for.”

Team USA

JJ Spaun

JJ Spaun may well be pinching himself on the first tee at Bethpage Black. The Californian lost his PGA Tour card in 2021 and considered retirement last year after a poor start to the season but has enjoyed a meteoric rise in 2025, which included winning the US Open with a 64-foot birdie putt on the 18th green and finishing second in the Team USA qualification standings.

He has climbed from 115th to sixth in the World Rankings this season on the back of his sparkling approach play, which is among the best on the PGA Tour, and the resilience that comes with being a long-time journeyman before reaching recent heights.

At 35, Spaun knows his game inside out but has admitted that he never believed he would play in a Ryder Cup – a mindset that could prove to be a blessing or a curse when the pressure really cranks up. Still, he has the backing of his compatriots and, in particular, Justin Thomas.

He revaled: “I’ve talked to JT quite a bit, and he’s like, ‘You earned your spot on this team; don’t feel like this is a handout or a pick. You have a major that a lot of us are very jealous of, and you deserve to be on this team.’

“I think hearing that has helped me feel like I fit in more as a core player than a rookie that is just trying to make some sort of impact. So I think that’s huge for my confidence.”

Russell Henley

Russell Henley, in white, red and blue striped Team USA golf gear and a white cap, smiles as he walks next to Scottie Scheffler.

It’s not hard to see why Russell Henley flies under the radar – he is understated, he doesn’t hit bombs or have a particularly aesthetic swing – but 10 top-10 finishes this year, including two at majors and a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational have seen him rise to third in the World Rankings and establish himself as one of the most consistent golfers on the planet.

Bethpage Black’s length could be an issue for him as, while accurate, he is the shortest hitter on Team USA and at the 45th Ryder Cup.

Henley has team match play experience, having proved a successful partner to Scottie Scheffler during last year’s President’s Cup triumph, and it would be no surprise to see him paired with the World No. 1 again this weekend.

The 36-year-old, the oldest player on Team USA despite being a rookie, may not strike fear into the hearts of the Europeans but his consistency could make him a key player for captain Keegan Bradley, who feels he is made for the Ryder Cup.

Bradley said: “I saw firsthand what Russell is capable of in team match play at last year’s Presidents Cup. He is a fierce competitor and built to shine on the Ryder Cup stage. I am pumped to have him as a member of our team and know he will bring his best in September.”

Ben Griffin

What a year it has been for Ben Griffin. Four years on from quitting golf to work for a mortgage company, the 29-year-old was named among Keegan Bradley’s captain’s picks on the back of a brilliant breakthrough season.

Griffin has claimed his first two PGA Tour wins among 11 top 10 finishes to rise to 11th in the World Rankings and fifth on Data Golf‘s strokes gained index – the metric many feel is the best way to measure golfing performance.

What he lacks in distance off the tee, ‘Benny Booms’ makes up for with his scintillating short game and aggressive mindset, which could make him a handful for Team Europe.

Griffin is hard to miss due to his aviator-style sunglasses, which has worn since midway through last year due to seeing ‘floaters’ after having laser eye surgery to save his sight.

He has a big supporter in World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who waxed lyrical about his Team USA teammate after edging him out at the Procore Championship earlier this month.

Scheffler said: “I think Ben (Griffin) always had the belief that he was going to be out here. I don’t know if he was an accountant or (loan mortgage officer) for that long.

“When you talk to Ben. He’s a guy that has a lot of confidence, he’s got a lot of self-belief. That’s what we love about him being a part of our Ryder Cup team.

He added: “I was fortunate to be the winner this week, but (Griffin’s) going to bounce back. I’m excited that he’s going to be on my team in a couple weeks. I’m excited that I don’t have to play against him.”

No player will be more popular with the Bethpage Black crowd than Cameron Young. Not only was the New Yorker born less than 60 miles from the course, he also won the New York State Open there in 2015 – becoming the first amateur to do so.

One of Team USA’s captain’s picks, Young battled his way into Keegan Bradley’s thinking courtesy of a late-season surge. He has had six top-ten finishes since the end of June, including his first PGA Tour title at Wyndham Championship last month and a tied fourth-place finish at the US Open earlier this summer.

The 28-year-old is one of the best putters in the game at the moment – ranking fifth for strokes gained putting on the PGA Tour – and that could see him sent out in the foursomes on both Friday and Saturday, perhaps alongside fellow aggressive big-hitter Bryson DeChambeau.

Young is known as a fairly reserved player but Team USA teammate Collin Morikawa is hoping that the passion of the Ryder Cup could unlock a fire inside him.

“I would love to see Cam Young just throw a massive fist pump in someone’s face,” he said. “I would love it. I mean, home state, home crowd, red, white and blue, played on the Junior Ryder Cup.

“He’s a fiery competitor. I’ve known Cam for a long time. He’s been very stoic, right. We’re deep competitors. Whether you see that or not through the TV or through watching us play, he wants to whoop some butt.

“Yeah, I would love to see a nice little putter raise, undercut, fist-pump.”
