Deep Cut Friday: ‘Cash Car Star’ by the Smashing Pumpkins

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Each week, SPIN digs into the catalogs of great artists and highlights songs you might not know for our Deep Cut Friday series.

The last few years of the Smashing Pumpkins’ ’90s run were a little chaotic. Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was fired and then rehired, and bassist D’arcy Wretzky permanently left the band. Frontman Billy Corgan envisioned another epic double album as a grand farewell record. But Virgin Records, stung by low sales for 1998’s Adore, only agreed to release a single-disc version of Machina/The Machines of God in February 2000.

As the year wound down, Corgan decided to go out with a bang, assembling the extra music Virgin declined to release as Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music. Corgan had 25 vinyl copies pressed up and given away to friends and fans with instructions to share the music on the internet, and the album existed for decades only as a beloved bootleg. Machina II opens with a couple of uptempo rockers including “Cash Car Star,” featuring lyrics that seemed pointedly disillusioned with show business.

The band reunited in 2006 and have released many new albums since then, but for many years a proper release of Machina II remained elusive. And then this month Smashing Pumpkins released Machina – Aranea Alba Edition, a massive 80-song box set featuring an expanded version of both albums. The Machina II songs “Speed Kills,” “Let Me Give the World To You,” and “Real Love” have appeared on reissues and compilations over the years. But the new box set offers the first retail release of most of the songs on the album, albeit in a very expensive limited edition package ($395), including “Cash Car Star,” which the band performed on television multiple times.

“Cash Car Star” made its live debut in October 1998, when Smashing Pumpkins opened for Kiss at Dodger Stadium for a Halloween special broadcast on the Fox network.

Two years later, in between the black market release of Machina II and the band’s farewell shows in Chicago, the band made one last television appearance, playing “Cash Car Star” on The Tonight Show. Host Jay Leno walked over to banter with Corgan afterwards, asking why the band was breaking up. “Comedy doesn’t pay, Jay,” Corgan deadpanned. “You’ll be back, you guys will be back,” said Leno, who’d later have his own struggles with gracefully leaving the spotlight.

Three more essential Smashing Pumpkins deep album cuts:

“Hummer”

Siamese Dream is more purely a guitar album than the Smashing Pumpkins records that would follow it. But the “Hummer” intro is one of the album’s more unusual moments, a distorted loop of Corgan playing sitar that producer Butch Vig chopped up on the same Akai S 1000 sampler that he’d go on to use for many of Garbage’s early songs.

“Starla”

1994’s Pisces Iscariot is one of the most impressive rarities compilations in the alternative rock canon, full of great songs that somehow didn’t make the cut for the band’s early albums. The 11-minute “Starla,” originally released on the B-side of the “I Am One” single, climaxes with arguably Corgan’s most transcendent guitar solo.

“Here is No Why”

The tuneful Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness highlight “Here is No Why” is sandwiched between the band’s heaviest hits, “Zero” and “Bullet With Butterfly Wings.”

Tyrese Gibson Booked On Animal Cruelty Charge, Releases Statement

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Earlier this month, a tragic incident occurred involving Tyrese‘s four cane corso dogs and allegedly killing a neighbor’s Cavalier King Charles spaniel in their Atlanta neighborhood. After a warrant was issued last Monday (Sept. 22) for Gibson’s arrest, the “Sweet Lady” singer has now chosen to turn himself.

According to NBC, jail records show Gibson was was booked on a charge of cruelty to animals and released on bond. Records show neighbors said four cane corso dogs were seen running through the neighborhood on Sept. 18 and killed a neighbor’s 5-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel named Henry.

The police report states security footage showed Gibson’s four cane corsos running toward Henry’s home. Henry’s owner said he let his dog out into his yard after 10 p.m. to use the bathroom and found him dead in the driveway five minutes later. On the same evening of the attack, a woman called animal control to report that four cane corsos were at her door and she needed to be escorted to her vehicle, per NBC.

The report also stated that Gibson “admitted that he believes his dogs killed Henry and that he knows it’s been an ongoing issue over the past few months with his dogs getting out.” On Sept. 22, animal control went to the Fast & Furious actor’s home to have him surrender the four dogs, but he refused over the phone and said he needed a few days to figure out his next steps. They returned to his residence the following day with a search warrant, but Tyrese and the dogs were not there.

The official statement from Gabe Banks of Banks Weaver Law Firm, Gibson’s legal counsel, reads as follows:

“Earlier this morning, Mr. Tyrese Gibson voluntarily turned himself in to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office to answer the misdemeanor warrant. Earlier this week (Tuesday), Mr. Gibson’s legal team worked with prosecutors and successfully secured a consent bond for his immediate release. He has now been processed and released. Despite what others might say, throughout this entire process Mr. Gibson has cooperated fully with legal authorities and will continue to do so until this matter is resolved. Mr. Gibson once again wants to extend his deepest condolences to the family who lost their dog and respectfully asks for privacy and understanding as this matter is handled through the appropriate legal channels.”

In a statement posted to Gibson’s Instagram account before his booking, Banks shared his client “accepts full responsibility for his dogs.” The statement also explained Tyrese made the decision to get his cane corsos because he felt he needed protection from “stalkers randomly showing up at his home,” and the dogs have never viciously attacked anyone until this recent incident.

Gabe Banks of Banks Weaver Law Firm wrote, “Since the day he learned of this tragedy, Mr. Gibson has been actively trying to reach out to the family directly to express his sorrow and condolences. He knows nothing can undo their loss, but he wants them to know he is truly heartbroken.”

Tyrese, in his own quote, concluded with, “I had no idea I would ever wake up to this nightmare, and I know the family must feel the same way. To them, please know that my heart is broken for you. I am praying for your healing and for your beloved pet, who never deserved this. I remain committed to facing this matter with honesty, responsibility, and compassion.”

NBC states that Fulton County police captain said Gibson had received a warning on Sept. 7 because his dogs were seen running through the neighborhood more than five times over the past few months. In Tyrese’s statement, he shared his decision to rehome his two adult dogs and their three puppies “in safe and loving homes” because the liability of keeping them “was simply too great.”

Louis C.K. defends Riyadh Comedy Festival appearance, while Jessica Kirson apologises for playing

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Louis C.K. has defended playing at the Riyadh Comedy Festival, while fellow comedian Jessica Kirson has apologised for her appearance.

The controversial event is being held in the Saudi Arabian capital and also included on the line-up are Dave Chappelle, Bill Burr, Aziz Ansari, Jimmy Carr, Pete Davidson, Kevin Hart, Jim Jefferies and Chris Tucker.

The festival has been criticised by groups such as Human Rights Watch as being an example of the Saudi government attempting to whitewash its human rights abuses and position itself as a venue for major international cultural events.

Other comedians such as Marc Maron, Shane Gillis and Zach Woods have also hit out at their peers for playing at the festival, with Maron quipping, “You know, ‘from the folks that brought you 9/11, two weeks of laughter in the desert. Don’t miss it!’”

“I mean, the same guy that’s going to pay them is the same guy that paid that guy to bonesaw Jamal Khashoggi and put him in a fucking suitcase,” he said, referring to the dissident Saudi journalist that was murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018. “But don’t let that stop the yucks, it’s gonna be a good time,” he added.

Now, Louis C.K. has spoken about playing the festival on Real Time With Bill Maher. “When I’m talking to the other comedians who have been there, they’ve been really surprised by what’s going on,” C.K. said “There’s a woman who’s a lesbian and Jewish, who did a show there, and she got a standing ovation. So, there’s stuff going on that’s unexpected in this thing. People have been playing Saudi Arabia for years. Comedians have been going and playing Arab countries. There was a film festival there recently, it’s kind of opened up. But I’ve always said no to Arab countries.”

He continued: “And when this came up, they said there’s only two restrictions – their religion and their government, I don’t have jokes about those two things. It used to be when I got offers from places like that, there would be a long list, and I’d just say, ‘No, I don’t need that.’ But when I heard it’s opening, I thought, that’s awfully interesting. That just feels like a good opportunity. And I just feel like comedy is a great way to get in and start talking.”

Kirson, on the other hand, has offered an apology for playing the event. The stand-up, who is openly lesbian, told The Hollywood Reporter: “I hoped that this could help LGBTQ+ people in Saudi Arabia feel seen and valued. I am grateful that I was able to do precisely that – to my knowledge, I am the first openly gay comic to talk about it on stage in Saudi Arabia. I received messages from attendees sharing how much it meant to them to participate in a gay-affirming event. At the same time, I deeply regret participating under the auspices of the Saudi government.”

She added: “Most importantly, I am deeply sorry to all the fans and followers I have hurt or disappointed.”

Bill Burr recently defended playing at the event, telling the Monday Morning Podcast: ““The royals loved the show. Everyone was happy. The people that were doing the festival were thrilled. The comedians that I’ve been talking to are saying, ‘Dude, you can feel [the audience] wanted it. They want to see real stand-up comedy.’ It was a mind-blowing experience. Definitely top three experiences I’ve had. I think it’s going to lead to a lot of positive things.”

Kristi Noem Says ICE Will Be ‘All Over’ Super Bowl

Kristi Noem Says ICE Will Be ‘All Over’ Super Bowl

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Kristi Noem, the secretary of homeland security, confirmed what President Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said earlier in the week: U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents will be attending the Super Bowl on Feb. 8. The event will feature Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny as the halftime show headliner.

In a recent The Benny Show video, Noem told right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson that ICE will be “all over” the 2026 Super Bowl.

“I have the responsibility for making sure everybody goes to the Super Bowl, has the opportunity to enjoy it and to leave, and that’s what America’s about,” Noem said in the clip. “So yeah, we’ll be all over that place. We’re going to enforce the law.”

Noem continued: “So, I think people should not be coming to the Super Bowl unless they’re law-abiding Americans who love this country.”

When asked if she had “any message to the NFL” regarding the organization naming Bad Bunny as its Super Bowl halftime performer, Noem said, “Well, they suck and we’ll win, and God will bless us and we’ll stand and be proud of ourselves at the end of the day, and they won’t be able to sleep at night because they don’t know what they believe. And they’re so weak, we’ll fix it.”

Earlier in the week, Lewandowski spoke to Johnson as well. He told the podcaster when asked if ICE would be at the big game, “There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else,” Lewandowski said. “We will find you, we will apprehend you, we will put you in a detention facility, and we will deport you.”

Others in the president’s MAGA base also unsurprisingly had meltdowns when it was announced the Puerto Rican superstar would headline the Super Bowl halftime show.

Before Bad Bunny was revealed as the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show star, the musician told i-D why his upcoming Debí Tirar Más Fotos world tour does not include dates in the continental United States. The artist said the Trump administration’s recent mass deportations targeting Latinos informed the decision.

“There were many reasons why I didn’t show up in the U.S., and none of them were out of hate — I’ve performed there many times,” Bad Bunny said. “All of [the shows] have been successful. All of them have been magnificent.”

Trending Stories

The singer, a vocal critic of Trump’s agenda, added: “But there was the issue of — like, fucking ICE could be outside [my concert]. And it’s something that we were talking about and very concerned about.”

Bad Bunny is set to host Saturday Night Live’s Season 51 premiere tonight, which features musical guest Doja Cat.

Taylor Swift ‘Life of a Showgirl’ Acoustic Songs Added on CD Variants

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Any Taylor Swift fans chanting “more!” after the release of The Life of a Showgirl‘s 12 tracks on Friday (Oct. 3) were in for a little surprise Saturday night (Oct. 4). Swift dropped four new CD variants of her latest album, each featuring two acoustic tracks not found on the standard version of Showgirl.

See latest videos, charts and news

Now available in “limited quantities” on Swift’s official webstore, the CDs are described as having “brand new production by Max Martin, Shellback and Taylor Swift and newly recorded vocals by Taylor Swift.”

Fans can order the the limited-release CDs over a 24-hour period, through 7 p.m. ET Sunday — “while supplies last.” Each CD is priced at $7.99, and features cover art that’s different from that on the standard release. (Those who made it to a screening of The Release Party of a Showgirl in movie theaters this weekend will recognize the imagery.)

“File this under ‘save your best for the finale’… I think my favorite moments from the tour were the acoustic surprises. So I went back into the studio with Max and Shellback to record acoustic/unplugged versions of a few of the Showgirl songs with brand new vocals and production! Cannot WAIT for you to hear,” Swift wrote in an Instagram post promoting the CDs.

For those who share Swift’s love of acoustic versions of songs, here’s the breakdown of the four new The Life of a Showgirl options and what’s available on them (beyond the set’s original tracklist):

• Life Is a Song Acoustic Version with “Opalite (Life Is a Song Acoustic Version)” and “Ruin the Friendship (My Advice Version)”

• Dressing Room Rehearsal Version with “Wi$h Li$t (Settled Down Acoustic Version)” and “The Life of a Showgirl (Dressing Room Rehearsal Acoustic Version)”

• Alone in My Tower Acoustic Version with “The Fate of Ophelia (Alone in My Tower Acoustic Version)” and “Eldest Daughter (Now You’re Home Acoustic Version)”

• So Glamorous Cabaret Version with “Elizabeth Taylor (So Glamorous Cabaret Version)” and Elizabeth Taylor (Original Songwriting Voice Memo)

As Billboard revealed earlier on Saturday, initial first-day sales reports from data tracking firm Luminate say Swift sold 2.7 million copies in traditional album sales (physical and digital purchases) across all versions of the The Life of a Showgirl album available on its first day of release, Oct. 3. This means that in its first day alone, Showgirl‘s already seen the second-largest sales week for an album in the modern era — since Luminate began electronically tracking data in 1991. Only Adele has tracked a larger sales week since then, with 3.378 million copies of 25 sold within the first week of its release in 2015.

Telepathic Fish: Trawling the Early ‘90s Ambient Underground

Various Artists

Fundamental Frequencies

5 September 2025

It was 1992, and England had a hangover. The Happy Mondays had bankrupted Factory Records, the Stone Roses had disappeared, and the KLF summed it all up at the Brit Awards when they shot blanks into the audience and announced, “The KLF have now left the music business.” The glow sticks had cracked and leaked. Madchester and the rave phase were evolving into something entirely different. Looking to decorate their cultural comedown with new sines and wonders, partygoers sought spacey sounds and calmer frequencies. Enter Telepathic Fish, an ambient scene lovingly chronicled in Telepathic Fish: Trawling the Early ’90s Ambient Underground, a new release from Fundamental Frequencies.

Telepathic Fish is a curious collection, seeing as it doesn’t document a specific label or artist but rather a small sonic scene that organically emerged in 1992. It’s a friendly tale of fortuity, with random roommates uniting their shared interests to create the eponymous events in South London. David Vallade, Mario Aguera, Kevin Foakes, and the late Chantal Passamonte (also known as Mira Calix) found themselves living together at 102 Grove Vale, London SE22. When the friends began throwing parties under the collective name Openmind, they didn’t immediately realize how deftly they had tapped into the countercultural zeitgeist, like oracles of auricles.

Their parties included a “chill out room”, covered in mattresses and awash in UV lights, in which ambient techno flooded the atmosphere. Soon, that electronic ambience became the leading player, not just a supporting act, in a series of so-called “Telepathic Fish” shindigs. Openmind and various DJs (including Richard D. James of Aphex Twin fame) would select songs for these house parties, and the most representative and essential tracks from the time make up this ten-song ambient album. It’s obviously deeply personal to the compilers of this mix, and even if that intimate connection to the music doesn’t really come across (with Telepathic Fish achingly emanating a “you had to be there” vibe), it’s nonetheless a cleverly curated selection of chilled-out electronica.

Trawling the Early ’90s Ambient Underground features tracks from Nightmares on Wax, Spacetime Continuum, Global Communication, and Caustic Window, as well as remixes of songs by Keiichi Suzuki, Tranquility Bass, Barbarella, and others from the time. Perfectly sequenced, one would be forgiven for assuming that several of these tracks came from a single artist, so cohesive is the project’s vision (especially the first half). It’s rarely repetitive, though, with each tune reflecting a different aural facet of the scene, from silly synth squiggles to epic washes of waveforms.

The Barbarella remix is a phenomenal introduction, setting the sumptuous, warm tone of Telepathic Fish. Far from the icier, somewhat aloof sounds of certain contemporaneous electronic acts, the opening tunes are wholly inviting and accessible despite their length and musical complexity. With more than half the songs running eight minutes or longer, the album effortlessly immerses listeners in its wondrous, often playful sci-fi world. Insides’ “Skinned Clean” is perhaps the most beat-driven tune, and a great one at that, but danceable percussion isn’t missed on other lustrous tracks.

While a natural extension of the first six songs, the second half of Telepathic Fish is more musically diverse. After the somewhat aimless, 14-minute “Satellite Serenade (Trans Asian Express Mix)”, the record’s only real misstep, Telepathic Fish ends strongly with three unforgettable tracks. Tranquility Bass’ “Cantamilla (Bomb Pop)” magically combines a spry, funky rhythm with Arabic layali and a catchy vocal sample; it feels like the ancestor of so many less memorable songs on generic “world music” compilations.

The album ends on a startlingly beautiful note with the radical No-Man remix “Days in the Trees (Reich)”, which features heartwarming minimalist accompaniment to a memorable moment from the brilliant series Twin Peaks, in which the character Donna Hayward vividly recounts a sweet girlhood memory. The song feels like a sly thesis statement for all of Telepathic Fish, a record of a gorgeous memory from the early 1990s.

The accompanying booklet is informative but also a treasure trove of imagery from the era. It collects pictures of the many bespoke artifacts created by the roommates and their friends, working within myriad mediums, “from spray-painted stencils and badges to stamps and stickers, ink-jet printers, photocopiers and fax machines, collage and early 3D computer art”, as the booklet notes. In retrospect, Openmind and their Telepathic Fish parties seem like the electronic descendants of Andy Warhol’s multimedia art studio, The Factory, with a ragtag assemblage of eccentric creatives building off each other to create a thriving space where art and music became a collective experience.

Considering how much of an ecstatic event the Telepathic Fish parties were, it’s admittedly mildly melancholic to listen to Telepathic Fish: Trawling the Early ’90s Ambient Underground on one’s own, as a private headspace alone between headphones. However, the inspirational DIY narrative of its hip and happy happenstance, so thoughtfully documented and recalled by this delightful mix and beautiful booklet, might just galvanize some burgeoning bohemians to create their own scene and perhaps host tomorrow’s parties.

Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl Sells 2.7 Million Copies in First 24 Hours

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl is off to a record-breaking start, selling 2.7 million copies on its first day in the US. Already, Swift has secured the second-biggest sales week of the modern era — since Luminate began electronically tracking data in 1991 — trailing only Adele’s 25, which moved 3.378 million copies in its first week back in 2015 (per Billboard).

Of that total, 1.2 million came from vinyl sales alone, setting a new record and surpassing the benchmark Swift herself established with The Tortured Poets Department, which sold 859,000 vinyl copies in its 2024 debut week.

At least some of The Life of a Showgirl’s commercial success can be attributed to the sheer number of variants Swift released. At last count, there were at least 28 different versions of the album — including four newly announced editions featuring exclusive acoustic bonus tracks.

Trent Reznor Cancels Composer-Focused Future Ruins Fest

by jummy84 October 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ first Future Ruins festival, which was to take place Nov. 8 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center and spotlight world-class film and TV composers, has been canceled.

In a note on the event’s web site, organizers said, “unfortunately Future Ruins will not move forward this year. The reality is, due to a number of logistical challenges and complications, we feel we cannot provide the experience that’s defined what this event was always intended to be. Rather than compromise, we’re choosing to re-think and re-evaluate. Meanwhile, we are sorry for any inconvenience and appreciate all the interest and support. Refunds will be automatically issued and ticket holders will receive an email with more information.”

The stacked lineup was to have included Cristobal Tapia de Veer (Babygirl, Smile, The White Lotus), Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow (Ex Machina, Civil War), Danny Elfman (Batman, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Claudio Simonetti’s Goblin (Suspiria, Profondo Rosso/Deep Red, Dawn of the Dead), Hildur Guðnadóttir (Joker, Chernobyl, A Haunting in Venice), a performance of Howard Shore’s score of David Cronenberg’s Crash, Isobel Waller-Bridge (Munich: The Edge of War, Emma., Black Mirror), John Carpenter (Halloween, They Live, The Thing), Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein (Stranger Things, Lost in the Night), Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh (The Life Aquatic, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore), Questlove presenting the score works of Curtis Mayfield, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Candyman, Master, Telemarketers), Tamar-kali (Mudbound, Shirley, The Assistant), Terence Blanchard (BlacKkKlansman, Malcolm X, Inside Man) and Hauschka (All Quiet on the Western Front, Conclave, Lion).

“It’s about giving people who are, literally, the best in the world at taking audiences on an emotional ride via music the opportunity to tell new stories in an interesting live setting,” Reznor said when the fest was announced.

Having just announced a 2026 extension of their acclaimed Peel It Back tour, Nine Inch Nails just debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with their score for the upcoming movie Tron: Ares.

Government Shutdown Continues For Third Day As Layoffs Loom

Government Shutdown Continues For Third Day As Layoffs Loom

by jummy84 October 4, 2025
written by jummy84

The U.S. government is now three days into a shutdown as Republican and Democratic lawmakers remain deadlocked over a federal budget, according to reports. Roughly 750,000 employees of the federal workforce are expected to be put on unpaid leave, while some government services have been temporarily suspended.

The shutdown stems from a failure to pass a spending bill before Oct. 1, as Republicans control both chambers of Congress, but lacked the 60 votes needed in the Senate — giving Democrats negotiating power. Dems are now currently pushing for an extension of expiring tax credits that make health insurance more affordable, a reversal of cuts to Medicaid, and protections for federal health agencies.

A “stopgap bill” passed by the House failed to advance in the Senate, leaving essential services like Social Security and Medicare payments, border protection, ICE operations, air-traffic control, and in-hospital medical care running as usual, though in some cases without pay.

Non-essential employees and federal contractors are facing furloughs, while services like food assistance, federally funded pre-schools, national parks, museums, and research at agencies like the CDC and NIH may be delayed or paused.

President Donald Trump framed the shutdown as an opportunity to make further government cuts. “We’ll be laying off a lot of people,” he said on last week (Sept. 30), the day before the shutdown began. He also posted on Truth Social, “I have a meeting today with Russ Vought, he of PROJECT 2025 Fame, to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent.”

Both parties have blamed each other for the hold up, with House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticizing the White House and pointing out Trump directly. “Donald Trump continues to hide behind deepfake videos since the meeting in the Oval Office on Monday,” he said. “And it’s reasonable for the American people to wonder, what’s going on? Why is there no presidential leadership?”

Efforts to avoid the shutdown included a Sept. 29 meeting between Trump and congressional leaders, but “little progress was made, and both sides appeared to dig deeper into their positions,” according to reports.

How long the shutdown lasts will depend on whether Republicans and Democrats can reach a compromise.

According to CBS News, Republicans could negotiate healthcare extensions demanded by Democrats, or Democrats may eventually give in to reopening the government. This marks the first government shutdown in nearly seven years. The last major closure in 2018 lasted 35 days and was triggered by disputes over border wall funding.
