KPop Demon Hunters Perform ‘Golden’ on ‘Fallon’

The singing voices behind Huntr/x, the fictional K-pop girl group in the wildly popular, animated Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters, took The Tonight Show stage on Tuesday night for Ejae, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami’s first-ever live performance together.

The trio sang their hit single, “Golden,” and also joined host Jimmy Fallon on the couch for an interview. The vibrant performance kicked off with an animated intro before the trio took the stage to showcase the soaring track.

In the animated musical fantasy film, Ejae, Nuna and Rei Ami sing for the roles of Rumi, Mira and Zoey, respectively. (Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo voice the character’s spoken lines.) The movie follows the K-pop sensation as they moonlight as the mystical destroyers of an invisible demon realm and are soon faced with their biggest battle yet when rival band, Saja Boys, turn out to be demons intent on stealing Huntr/x fans.

During their interview with Fallon, the singers reflected on the phenomenon of the film and their recent appearance on Saturday Night Live, calling the opportunity “so insane.” They also shared how amazing it’s been to get emotional responses from both viewers and themselves.

“This movie has affected all us so much on an emotional level,” Nuna told Fallon. “I’m emotionally constipated, so I take a very, very long time to process my emotions. But I guess I was due for a cry the day of the premiere because literally five minutes into the film I’m, like, bawling my eyes out. And it’s weird because the thing that got me was seeing kimbap, which is a Korean food, it’s like a Korean rice roll, animated on screen.”

Following its premiere, KPop Demon Hunters’ skyrocketed to take the title of the Netflix’s most-watched animated film ever. Meanwhile, its soundtrack reached Number One on the Billboard 200, while “Golden” which has enjoyed eight weeks at Number One on the Billboard Hot 100. The album features a high energy score composed by Marcelo Zarvos and K-pop tracks produced by the likes of Teddy Park, Lindgren, Stephen Kirk, and Ian Eisendrath.

EJAE and Mark Sonnenblick, two of the songwriters among the impressive roster of collaborators, spoke to Rolling Stone in August about why the soundtrack has resonated with fans. “I don’t know if Mark knows this, but when I wrote ‘Golden,’ I was going through a hard time. I actually cried singing the demo, because it resonated with me so much,” said EJAE, the singing voice of Rumi, who opened up about her own experience in the K-pop world. “Maybe that’s why ‘Golden’ is ‘going up up up.’ Because everyone’s going through a hard time. And they want to feel hope.”

Earlier this summer, Netflix confirmed plans to submit “Golden” for consideration in the Best Original Song category at the 98th Academy Awards.

Molly Tuttle Dives Headfirst Into Entertaining Country Pop » PopMatters

So Long Little Miss Sunshine

Molly Tuttle

Nonesuch

15 August 2025

On singer Molly Tuttle’s newest album, So Long Little Miss Sunshine, the country rising star is letting bluegrass take a bit of a backseat this time. A light, infectiously optimistic collection of songs, primarily fitting snugly within the cozy confines of country pop, Tuttle‘s latest album allows her to flex her musical muscles beyond bluegrass and the folksy Americana of her previous work.

Tuttle, who’s widely credited with bringing bluegrass closer to the mainstream following her Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 2023 alongside musicians like Samara Joy and Anitta, grew up on bluegrass in the Palo Alto area. While the San Francisco Bay Area might not be the most obvious place of origin for bluegrass’s ingénue in residence, Tuttle’s Northern California roots creep through the Appalachian overgrowth of the genre, evident in influences like the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane.

Tuttle grew up on bluegrass, joining her family’s band, the Tuttles, with AJ Lee when she was just 15 years old. When we asked Tuttle what it felt like to have been recognized as one of the greats in a genre she grew up on, she told us, “It’s an amazing feeling. When I see my name placed with this new generation of bluegrass musicians, it’s such a cool feeling. Ever since I was eight years old and picked up a guitar, it’s been a dream of mine to make my life centered around music. It’s just so cool that this music has had this resurgence and reached this new fan group. There are so many more people here now, and it’s great to see the music is rising.”

Although flavors of Tuttle’s bluegrass roots are evident in So Long Little Miss Sunshine, the album represents a definite departure from Tuttle’s previous work. Being that bluegrass is a very “tradition-minded” genre, we asked Tuttle how she decides when to push the boundaries of the genre a bit and when to honor its more “traditional” aspects. Tuttle tells us it’s a fine line she has to walk. Elements of her trademark guitar picking and bluegrass flair shine through on some tracks.

Still, Tuttle wanted to create something that felt wholly “her” and not necessarily centered around the structures of a more traditional bluegrass album. Tracks like “Rosalee”, a spunky bluegrass ballad, would be right at home in Tuttle’s older work, like her Grammy-winning album Crooked Tree, while others, like the lead single ‘That’s Gonna Leave a Mark”, feel like they could be plucked right from the airwaves of country pop radio.

By giving herself a bit more freedom with production design, many of the confines Tuttle was accustomed to working within seemed to slip away, allowing for more rip-roaring live performances with heavy drumlines punctuated by more traditional bluegrass-sounding tracks. Moving away from the more storytelling, folksy aspects of bluegrass, Tuttle could break away and tell her own story in a way that felt authentic to both her and the music that influenced her.

In an Instagram post promoting the record’s release, Tuttle encouraged listeners to experience the tracks in the order in which they appear on the album (a foregone art lost to streaming and shuffle play supremacy). Of how she chose to order the LP, Tuttle said it was arranged both thematically and sonically. Tracks near the end of the album, like “No Regrets”, hark on notions of acceptance and moving on, while songs like “Story of My So Called Life” show Tuttle reflecting on the blank page, deciding where her music will take her next.

The Grammy-winning singer notes, “Kicking it off with a song like ‘Everything Burns’ that’s kind of dark and restless starts off the arc of the album with a bang. There were just certain interludes we came up with to weave the songs together. Certain things happen at the end of songs that weave into the next one. It was really fun to record the album this way. We were pretty diligent about going in with the track order and recording to work out those interludes.”

Smack in the middle of the album, a cover of Swedish pop duo Icona Pop‘s 2012 hit “I Love It” makes a surprise appearance. On her decision to include the cover, Tuttle said, “It came about in a very funny and random way. I had just heard that song, and it popped back into my head. Probably because of Charli XCX blowing up. We were in the studio doing pre-production and coincidentally Jake Joyce [her producer] said, ‘I really wanna do a cover of that song, but make it really spacey and kind of trippy.’”

Molly Tuttle went home and learned the song that night, recording it the next day in an hour. By the time the album was nearing completion and Joyce sent her a tracklist, she’d almost forgotten they’d recorded it. While a Swedish pop song more than a decade old might seem incongruous to an upbeat collection of country tracks, the song seamlessly slips into the rhythm of the album, almost entirely disguised by Tuttle’s stripped-down and more melodic iteration of the track.

With much of So Long Little Miss Sunshine harkening to the act of letting go, we asked Tuttle if there were any themes in music she felt she was ready to say “so long” to. “I feel like musically I don’t know what I’d like to let go of, except for feeling like kind of a fraud in a way. Since I’m not from the South, sometimes I feel like I have a little bit of imposter syndrome. But I feel like for me I want to move forward to a more expansive vision of who I am as an artist, which I think I did a little more on this record, and I’m excited for whatever I do next because I feel like I’ve gotten a clearer vision of who I am and where I’m going.”

With bluegrass having a definitive geographic association, we asked Molly Tuttle how location influenced this album. The country singer told us that while the Bay Area still very much feels like home to her, Nashville (where she’s lived for the last decade) left its mark on this album more than it has on any of her past work.

For all its love of freedom and family, bluegrass (and country more broadly) finds itself in a precarious position as unbridled patriotism moves from “love of country” to often bordering on fascistic nationalism. With much of country music being co-opted by conservatism, we asked Tuttle if the political climate has changed her relationship to the genre.

“I do feel like, for me as a woman in this male-dominated industry. It was hard for me to find my voice within that. There was a shift I noticed in my early 20s. When I moved to Nashville, people became more curious about ‘What is it like for a woman in the music industry?’ and people weren’t really asking those questions.”

Jimmy Kimmel Challenges Aziz Ansari Over Saudi Arabia Comedy Festival

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Aziz Ansari was among the comedians who recently traveled to Saudi Arabia to perform at the controversial Riyadh Comedy Festival, a decision that raised eyebrows and prompted questions from Jimmy Kimmel.

Ansari appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, October 6th, to promote his feature directorial debut, Good Fortune. Toward the end of the interview, Kimmel took the opportunity to ask Ansari about his choice to perform at the festival.

“People are questioning why you would go over there and take their money to perform in front of these people,” Kimmel commented. “This is something that’s become a big part of the news because people, a lot of comedians especially, are very upset because the people who paid the comedians to come to this are not good people. It’s a pretty brutal regime. They’ve done a lot of horrible, horrible things… I’m curious as to why you decided to do that.”

Ansari noted that “it’s something I put a lot of thought into” before deciding to accept the invitation.

“I have an aunt that lived there for a while, and I talked to her about this, and she said, you know, there’s people over there that don’t agree with the stuff that the government’s doing, and to ascribe like the worst behavior of the government onto those people, that’s not fair,” Ansari explained. “Just like there’s people in America that don’t agree with the things the government is doing, right?”

Kimmel continued to press Ansari, saying that while the American government is doing “horrible things,” he called out the Saudi government for extreme atrocities, saying, “They murdered a journalist,” in reference to the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi in 2018, adding that “these are not good people over there.”

“I was just there to do a show for the people, and I talked to my wife about this before I went, and she said, you know, whenever there’s repressive societies like this, they try to keep things out, whether it’s rock and roll music, or, blue jeans, because it makes people curious about outside ideas, outside values,” Ansari said. “And this is a very young country, like half the country is under the age of 25, and things can really change. And to me, a comedy festival felt like something that’s pushing things to be more open and to push a dialogue. You kind of have to make a choice of whether you’re going to isolate or engage.”

Later on in the interview, Ansari shared that after accepting the invitation to perform, he decided that part of his fee would go towards “causes that support free press and human rights,” specifying Reporters Without Borders and Human Rights Watch.

“It’s a complicated issue, but I felt like it was something that was pushing things in the right direction, I hope,” Ansari added. Watch the full interview below.

Bill Burr, who also appeared at the festival, used his podcast to defend the decision, calling it a “great” experience, and concluding that the people there are “just like us.”

Dave Chappelle declared that “it’s easier to talk here (in Saudi Arabia) than it is in America” during his set at the festival.

Lesbian comic Jessica Kirson apologized for performing at the event, while Louis C.K. has defended his decision to appear.

Other comedians who performed at the Riyadh Comedy Festival include Sebastian Maniscalco, Kevin Hart, Chris Tucker, Pete Davidson, and Whitney Cummings.

Christian Finnegan Is on a Mission to Introduce New Music to Old(er) People

by jummy84 October 8, 2025
written by jummy84

“There’s really only two things you can count on in this world: songs and dogs. Those are the two things that never will let you down.”

This is the central belief of comedian and lifelong music fan Christian Finnegan. However, he also knows the “songs” half of this equation is complicated by one of life’s nigh-guarantees: The older you get, the harder it is to keep up with new music. “Obviously there are tactile reasons why someone my age—uh, 52—might not be absorbing a lot of music,” admits Finnegan, “They have children, jobs, lives—it just isn’t part of their weekly practice to seek things out. But sometimes they also just feel that there’s just so much out there, where do you even start?”

To combat that, Finnegan started a bi-weekly-ish Substack titled New Music For Olds. In each of the 86 newsletters he’s put out since 2022, Finnegan finds and recommends at least three artists who are probably/hopefully new to casual music fans. However, what separates his picks from, say, an established site’s new release list is that Finnegan then puts what he likes about each artist into terms that his (and—full disclosure—my own) fellow Generation Xers can understand.

For example, he sells recent pick “Andromeda” by Preoccupations with “that romantic-but-jittery sound that would fit snugly into an early episode of 120 Minutes, sandwiched between the Church and Peter Murphy.” Each write-up also gets a Voltage ranking (think volume; the Precoccupations gets a 6), a Pairing Suggestion (think activity; here it’s “Eyes closed, swaying in a vaguely rhythmic fashion”), and a final meme-like visual punchline (this one ending with MTV’s Dave Kendall in jean shorts). All together, the recommendations are succinct, clear, and funny, like when you’d talk music with friends back in college.

“That’s the spirit I’ve tried to bring to the newsletter. This isn’t me going through a bio of every artist, and it’s not me trying to throw in as many rock writer cliches— you know, ‘shimmering guitars’ and all that stuff that drives me batshit,” chuckles Finnegan. His goal is to talk about music the way he and his friends would’ve when driving around in high school, looking for the feelings it creates and what sticks out. “And if that means, ‘oh, I like this song because it reminds me of my third grade gym teacher,’ then that’s fine,” he continues. “That’s the way people experience music in their actual lives. Sometimes it’s, ‘I really love the way the vocals are stacked,’ or ‘I really love that guitar tone.’ But sometimes it’s like, ‘Oh my God, this sounds like something you’d hear at an amusement park when you were a kid.’”

But how does he actually discover the music he shares? Turns out there wasn’t much for Finnegan to demystify: “It’s not really any more laborious than just going through the new release section and just clicking on stuff.” That’s right. While Finnegan does also follow certain music writers he likes on social media, the majority of what he recommends comes from sampling new releases on Apple Music. “We live now in an endless food court of music. There’s no barrier for entry for just clicking on an album because, ‘This cover looks interesting,’ or ‘So and so told me they enjoyed this.’ I’m just gonna click on it and if I don’t like it in 90 seconds, I move on with my life.” And to all the busy people asking when he does this, Finnegan goes back to the second thing you can always count on: “Having a dog helps. Like, dog walks are great for that.”

(Credit: Mindy Tucker)(Credit: Mindy Tucker)
(Credit: Mindy Tucker)

His one note: Go in without the pressure of hearing what is cool or important. He explains, “I tell friends of mine who ask about this that if you’re trying to be aware of what’s cool, then you’re always going to be frustrated. Because the stuff that’s cool is not for you and you liking it will make it less cool.” Instead, Finnegan’s mantra is: “If I stick to what feels good between my ears, that’s a much better metric than, ‘What am I supposed to be listening to right now?’”

While this sampling process wasn’t possible back in the days of hitting Tower Records on a Tuesday, Finnegan also feels streaming services are part of the problem in finding new music. “The algorithms trap you,” he says. “They know what you want. They feed you. It’s kind of like you have crappy frozen turkey burgers in your freezer. They’re there, you know what they are, so when you get hungry, you simply say, ‘Screw it. I’m just going to eat another turkey burger.’”

(Credit: Mindy Tucker)(Credit: Mindy Tucker)
(Credit: Mindy Tucker)

Instead, Finnegan’s eating well these days, consistently finding new artists to love. Some of his recent faves—whom he admits, “If you’re under 30, you’re probably well aware of them”—are Magdalena Bay (“They’re retro, contemporary, and futuristic at the same time”), Die Spitz (“They have this song called “Throw Yourself to the Sword,” which I’ve probably listened to about 40,000 times this week.”), and the Beths (“Not just their songs, which I love, but I love how much they all seem to like each other.”).

But on top of the music, writing New Music For Olds brings Finnegan joy. It allows him to write the niche music jokes he never gets to make in his stand-up set, even though he does concede to having the goal of “I always wanted to be like the Nada Surf of comedy, those people who feel like they have exactly the career they’re trying to have.” Listening to new music also lets him feel “Younger, alive, engaged,” as his brain makes new connections, forms new paths. It’s a feeling that he hopes to share with his readers, saying, “I promise that your life—for that next week or two when you find a song or an album that you really love—will have that new car smell that is increasingly rare as you get older.”

United States Department of Homeland Security Responds to Anti-ICE Lyrics in Zach Bryan Song Snippet

by jummy84 October 8, 2025

On Friday, October 3, Zach Bryan posted a snippet of an unreleased song on his Instagram with the caption “the fading of the red white and blue.” “I heard the cops came/Cocky motherfuckers, ain’t they?”, Bryan sings on the track, which according to Stereogum is titled “Bad News.” “And ICE is gonna come bust down your door/Try to build a house that no one builds no more/But I got a telephone/Kids are scared and all alone.”

Now Bryan’s lyrics have drawn the ire of the federal government—a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly common. Earlier today (October 7), Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary of public affairs for the United States Department of Homeland Security, told TMZ that Bryan should “stick to ‘Pink Skies,’” referencing a song from his 2024 album The Great American Bar Scene. Pitchfork has reached out to representatives for Bryan for comment.

Under the second Trump administration, the United States Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency has been conducting raids and mass deportations in cities across the U.S. Following the news that Bad Bunny, who is Puerto Rican, would perform the halftime show at Super Bowl LX next year, DHS adviser and President Donald J. Trump’s 2024 campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said that ICE agents would be present at the event.

I know what I made

by jummy84 October 8, 2025

Taylor Swift has addressed the criticism she’s received for her latest album, ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ – see what she had to say below.

Swift released her 12th studio album ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ on Friday (October 3), the follow-up to last year’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’. Since then, fans have been vocal about their thoughts on the album – with some calling it “her best album” and the return of “pop perfection”, and others declaring it “the worst Taylor Swift album yet” and “boring and basic”.

In a new chat with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Swift has addressed the criticism she’s received for the album. “I welcome the chaos,” she began. “The rule of show business is if it’s the first week of my album release, and you are saying either my name or my album title, you’re helping.”

She continued: “I have a lot of respect for people’s subjective opinions on art — I’m not the art police. Everybody is allowed to feel exactly how they want and what our goal is as entertainers is to be a mirror. Oftentimes an album is a really, really wild way to look at yourself — what you’re going through in your life is gonna affect whether you relate to the music I’m putting out at any given moment.”

“What I often love seeing my fans say is ‘I used to be someone who didn’t like relate to Reputation, and now that I’ve been through some other things in my life, that’s my favourite album.’ Or ‘I used to be a Fearless girlie, now I’m obsessed with Evermore.’ I’m playing for keeps. I have such an eye on legacy when I’m making my music — I know what I made, I know I adore it. I know that on the theme of what the Showgirl is, all of this is part of it.”

Elsewhere during the chat, Swift said of the album when comparing it to last year’s ‘The Tortured Poets Department’: “This album by personality was a funnier album. The character attributes I was highlighting in that writing process were much more serious and sensitive and introspective, and oftentimes more earnest and stoic — the characteristics of a poet.”

Swift continued: “This one was like, showgirls are mischievous, fun, scandalous, sexy, fun, flirty, hilarious … I’m so proud of this song craft. I’m so proud of these melodies and these lyrics and these stories, and going in and out of character and kind of playing with your style speak.”

“Making this album was really something I’ve been wanting to do for my entire career, because I have always wanted to have fun in this type of way,” she told Lowe. “To have fun, to exhibit mischief and be flirty, and fun, and make jokes, and get to have that side of my personality. That’s a huge part of my personality.”

The singer has denied she will quit music upon getting married to her fiancée Travis Kelce, playfully adding that it was “shockingly offensive” to suggest so. Speaking to Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2, she said: “I’m really right now just like really stoked about the idea that I get to marry this person. I’m gonna think about that and then I’m gonna put out this album and then I’m gonna think about other things after that.”

For now, the singer has ruled out touring off the back of her record-breaking Eras tour, adding: “I’m gonna be really honest with you. I am so tired, like when I think about doing it again. Because I would want to do it really well again, you know?”

She has also turned down playing the Super Bowl Halftime Show, denying to Jimmy Fallon that the rejection was over footage rights. “This has nothing to do with Travis,” Swift reasoned. “He would love for me to do it, but I’m just too locked in.”

Taylor Swift

She has also recently said that she used to fear that her songwriting would “dry up” if she were ever in a happy relationship. “What if writing is directly tied to my torment and pain?” she said. “And it turns out, that’s not the case at all, and we just were catching lightning in a bottle with this record.”

NME gave ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ three stars, writing: “To seek escapism is not a sin, but the best pop music makes the personal feel like life or death. ‘Speak Now’, ‘Reputation’,  ‘Folklore’: her greatest works could be genuinely transformative. For the first time, ‘The Life Of A Showgirl’ sees Swift not catalysed into artistic growth by love, but merely comfortably secured by it.”

Only Fuerza Regida’s JOP could pull together the biggest stars in both hip-hop and música mexicana for one festival. On Tuesday, the Fuerza frontman unveiled the lineup for the second annual Don’t Fall in Love Fest — headlined by Fuerza Regida and Future — set for Nov. 22 in San Bernardino, California.

On the Mexican music front, heavyweights Banda MS and Los Tucanes de Tijuana will perform, along with newer stars Oscar Maydon, Netón Vega, Banda Machos, Clave Especial, Chuyin, and Victor Mendivil.

Repping the rap and hip-hop world will be Future, Chief Keef, Saweetie, Baby Bash, Snow Tha Product, and Peysoh.

Chicano stars Lil’ Rob and MC Magic, along with Mexican bands Mi Banda el Mexicano and Banda Machos, round out the lineup. J.I Bandz and Kingmostwanted will represent the local San Bernardino rap scene.

“Don’t Fall in Love Fest is back, and we’re coming back with full force,” said JOP in a press release. “Neton, Future, Chief Keef, Banda MS, música mexicana meets rap across two stages. No one has done anything like this before, and after last year’s success, we can’t wait for fans to come celebrate the music, the culture, and the energy with us.”

Festival passes are on sale now. General admission entry costs $263, GA+ entry starts at $393, and VIP tickets will cost fans $688 each.

This year, the fest — hosted by JOP’s Street Mob Records and Bobby Dee Presents — will expand to two full-production stages and a club dome with DJs and “state-of-the-art sound and lighting” late into the evening.

A portion of the festival profits will support charitable initiatives, including immigration legal assistance for the Latin community, according to a press release.

Last year, JOP hosted the fest fo the first time, bringing along artists such as Lil Baby, Xavi, Luis R Conriquez, Los Ángeles Azules, and Kodak Black to San Bernardino.

ShopBillboard especially loves the Nightmare Before Christmas offering, given it’s the most on-theme calendar of all four we’ve picked. You’ve got your familiar faces like Jack Skellington, along with timid little Sally and the loveable ghost dog Zero. The Marvel-themed calendar is also a hit, especially with comic book fans. Every hero from Captain America to Spiderman is decked out in proper Christmas attire, ready to fight crime and keep the city safe, snow or shine. If you’re not into opening up these calendars one by one, you can also use the little accompanying figures as stocking stuffers or situated atop a cake.

Funko has created a slew of themed Advent calendars, all available on Amazon. While some of them aren’t currently on sale, they’re still worth a splurge, especially if you have little ones you want to impress this holiday season. These calendars are both interactive and decorative, the best of both worlds.

These figures are classified as Bitty Pops, a subsection of Funko Pop figures that are miniature. Don’t let their size fool you; these figures are extremely expressive and colorful, making any space they’re placed in come alive. Funko sells these miniatures beyond their Advent calendars, sometimes solo, other times in packs with miniature display sets.
