Cardi B And More Honored At 2025 Billboard R&B Hip-Hop Power Players

Cardi B accepted the Impact Of The Year Award from Billboard’s Senior Director of R&B/Hip-Hop Carl Lamarre at Billboard’s R&B Hip-Hop Power Players 2025 event in New York City Thursday (Sept. 5). Her acceptance speech found her reminiscing on the influential women she aspired to be like as a young artist, as well as her desire to leave a lasting legacy.

“Hip-hop is a feeling. When I was growing up, I didn’t want to be the Shakiras, the J-Los, and the R&B artists; I wanted to be like Trina and Lil Kim. I wanted to be like them,” Cardi said. “I’m just so happy that I’m a part of something that I love. I always dreamed about this career — I just felt like with the environment that I was in, dreaming was dreaming. Reality crushes your dreams. So I’m happy that my career is the career that I always dreamed of.

“I want to be spoken about forever. We talk about all these hip-hop artists who came out 20 years ago and 30 years ago, and I want to be a part of that. I don’t want to be a moment. I want to be a legacy so I can die in peace one day and my kids can be like, ‘That’s my mama.’”

Other honorees included The Wu-Tang Clan, who accepted the Hip Hop Hall of Fame Award, and Leon Thomas, who took home the Breakthrough of the Year Award.

The event was held in concert with the release of Billboard’s annual R&B/Hip-Hop Power Players list, honoring executives throughout both genres, including Executive of the Year, TDE’s Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith.

Paul McCartney and Billie Eilish enjoy Oasis reunion tour in LA

Paul McCartney and Billie Eilish were among those attending the Oasis reunion tour stop in Los Angeles this weekend.

The North American leg of the Oasis Live ‘25 tour rolled into the Rose Bowl Stadium for the first of two sold-out shows last night (September 6), with a host of famous faces, including Vince Vaughn, Leonardo DiCaprio, Salma Hayek, Kristen Stewart, Metallica‘s James Hetfield, Finneas, Eilish and McCartney in attendance.

The latter can be seen in clips on social media filming while Noel Gallagher sang ‘Little By Little’, with many noting he was the only one in his section who stood up throughout. In a separate clip, fans approached him as he left the venue and asked what he thought of the show, to which he replied: “Fabulous”.

As far back as 2015, Noel had joked that if McCartney wrote their comeback single, he’d be willing to discuss a reunion. The same year, he walked back comments he made to MTV, where he said Oasis were bigger than The Beatles, which McCartney said was the biggest mistake of their career.

“I thought, ‘So many people have said that, and it’s the kiss of death,‘” he said at the time. “Be bigger than The Beatles, but don’t say it. The minute you say it, everything you do from then on is going to be looked at in the light of that statement.”

Both brothers revere McCartney, with Liam fondly recalling a now infamous interaction they’d had while speaking to NME in 2017.

“I’ve met him a few times he’s been absolutely a dream,” he said. “The last time was at the Royal Albert Hall. He goes, ‘Why are you always in a rush? Sit down, sit down’. I sit down and he goes, ‘Do you like margaritas?’ I said, ‘Yeah, but I had something before I come out, I don’t eat at this time of night’.

“He said, ‘They’re fuckin’ drinks, you stupid prick’. I thought he was offering me a pizza.”

A previous stop on the North American leg took them to New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, where they dedicated ‘Live Forever’ to the victims of the Minneapolis church shooting on the first night earlier this week.

Last Wednesday (August 27), a shooter targeted a group of people outside the Church of the Annunciation in Minneapolis before morning mass, killing two children and injuring eighteen others. The perpetrator then killed himself.

Oasis will next play dates in Pasadena and Mexico City before heading back for two extra shows at Wembley Stadium at the end of the month. They go on to play South Korea, Japan, Australia, Argentina, Chile and Brazil before the end of the year.

NME gave Oasis’ historic first comeback concert at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium a glowing five-star review, writing: “After a ‘90s heyday and an often maligned post-millennium era, this is Oasis redesigned for the 21st Century.”

“Playing before a pop-art-meets-psychedelia visual spectacular that never distracts but will look sick on a phone, they seem the quintessential stadium band playing the greatest hits of greatest hits.”

Noel also spoke recently about the “great” experience of being back on tour with his brother Liam, saying he had forgotten “how funny” he is, adding that he is “smashing it” and he is “proud of him”.

Bruce Springsteen and Donald Trump Both Attend U.S. Open Finals

Bruce Springsteen and Donald Trump Both Attend U.S. Open Finals

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Sworn enemies Bruce Springsteen and President Donald Trump were both on hand Sunday in New York City to watch the men’s finals at the U.S. Open. The outing marked the first time the singer and president had been in the same place since their public sparring earlier this summer.

The match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner was delayed nearly 30 minutes Sunday due to security measures that caused traffic issues because of Trump’s presence in the Rolex box, his arrival at Arthur Ashe Stadium drew boos. When the match finally did start, the venue was still less than half full because of the additional screening.

However, as the crowd started settling into their seats, TV cameras spotted Springsteen in attendance, sitting in a celeb-filled section along with Sting, Ben Stiller, and more:

Though Springsteen has been a vocal critic of Trump since he first ran for the presidency in 2015, he really seemed to draw the president’s ire when the songwriter blasted him at the inaugural date of his 2025 European tour.

While onstage, Springsteen took a moment out of his set to rail against Trump, calling the administration “corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous.”

Trump, obviously, reacted in a totally calm and normal way. “Springsteen is ‘dumb as a rock,’” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, “and couldn’t see what was going on, or could he (which is even worse!)? This dried out ‘prune’ of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that’s just ‘standard fare.’ Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!”

Still not over it, three days later, Trump took another shot at Springsteen in an even crazier post that also referenced Bono and Oprah Winfrey. “HOW MUCH DID KAMALA HARRIS PAY BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN FOR HIS POOR PERFORMANCE DURING HER CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT?” he wrote. “WHY DID HE ACCEPT THAT MONEY IF HE IS SUCH A FAN OF HERS? ISN’T THAT A MAJOR AND ILLEGAL CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION? WHAT ABOUT BEYONCÉ? …AND HOW MUCH WENT TO OPRAH, AND BONO??? I am going to call for a major investigation into this matter. Candidates aren’t allowed to pay for ENDORSEMENTS, which is what Kamala did, under the guise of paying for entertainment.”

Trending Stories

And perhaps, as everybody in the entire world except for Trump expected, the music community rallied behind Springsteen to show their support for him. Neil Young, Pearl Jam, Bono, Jason Isbell, and more all spoke out in solidarity with their friend in the days that followed.

In tennis lingo, I believe that would be a game, set, match.

Broadway’s ‘Cabaret’ Closes Early Amid Billy Porter’s Sepsis Diagnosis

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club is closing its doors earlier than planned following Billy Porter’s sudden departure from the production due to health concerns.

On Sunday (Sept. 7), producers of the Broadway revival announced that the 55-year-old Tony Award-winning actor and musician, who stars as the Emcee, is recovering from a “serious case” of sepsis, according to People. While Porter is expected to make a full recovery, doctors have advised him to rest.

“Billy was an extraordinary Emcee, bringing his signature passion and remarkable talent,” wrote producer Adam Speers of ATG Productions. “We wish Billy a speedy recovery and I look forward to working with him again in the very near future.”

As a result, the acclaimed revival of the John Kander and Fred Ebb musical — which began its Broadway run in April 2024 with Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin — will now conclude its engagement at New York City’s August Wilson Theatre on Sept. 21, nearly a month earlier than its originally scheduled closing date of Oct. 19.

Porter and actress-singer Marisha Wallace, who stars as Sally Bowles, joined the production on July 22 after a run in London’s West End.

In the Broadway show’s final weeks, the role of the Emcee will be performed in rotation by longtime alternates Marty Lauter and David Merino, with the performance schedule to be shared on Cabaret’s official social media channels.

Originally debuting on Broadway in 1966 and later adapted into the iconic 1972 film, Cabaret follows a group of characters navigating the final days of Weimar Germany, embracing the hedonistic, impoverished lifestyles of Berlin while ignoring the Nazi party’s rise to power.

Porter’s departure comes amid declining box office performance for the high-cost production. Grosses have dipped to around $500,000, with audience capacity falling below 70% in recent weeks, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

West Point Graduates Cancel Ceremony Honoring Tom Hanks

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

The West Point Association of Graduates has canceled a ceremony that was set to honor Tom Hanks with the Sylvanus Thayer Award, which recognizes an “outstanding citizen” whose career exemplifies the U.S Military Academy’s ideals of “Duty, Honor, Country,” according to The Washington Post.

In an email to faculty, Retired Army Col. Mark Bieger, president and chief executive officer of the Association, explained the decision as a desire to “focus on [the Academy’s] core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force.”

Hanks was announced as the 2025 recipient of the award in June. At the time, the Association highlighted the actor’s numerous portrayals of military figures in films such as Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, and Greyhound; his work as a producer on acclaimed series like Band of Brothers and The Pacific; and his long-standing advocacy for veterans, including leading a fundraising campaign for the National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

Related Video

“Tom Hanks has done more for the positive portrayal of the American service member, more for the care of the American veteran, their caregivers and their families, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other Americans,” Robert McDonald, former Secretary of Veterans Affairs and the Association’s board chairman, said when Hanks was first announced as the honoree.

The West Point Association of Graduates’ cancelation of the award comes amid a wave of controversial changes the Trump Administration has made to the US military. Since returning to office, Donald Trump has fired numerous top leaders, ordered reviews of the curriculums at academies like West Point, and just this week, he renamed the Department of Defense as the Department of War.

His son, Donald Trump Jr., celebrated the decision to strip Hanks of the award, writing on X: “Great to see [Secretary of War Pete Hegseth] holding the line for @realdonaldtrump to make the military strong again. West Point should be focused on training the next generation of war fighters, not celebrating woke leftwing celebrities with awards!!!”

2025 HBCU Fall Homecoming And Football Classic Schedule

by jummy84 September 7, 2025
written by jummy84

Every fall, the alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) make the trek to their respective alma maters to relish in their glory days. The week-long festivities often continue decades-old traditions, empower fundraising efforts, and celebrate the legacy of campuses big and small. Classics, significant matchups that exist outside of homecomings, are also a space to uplift the institutions through sport and community.

With growing eyes at programs such as Norfolk State University, as former NFL player Michael Vick enters his first season as head coach, or recent interest in Tuskegee University garnered by Love Island breakout star Olandria Carthan, HBCUs have spawned conversations on and off the field ahead of the season.

Still, the fact remains that with or without celebrity attention, HBCUs matter, and homecomings and classics are proof. So, start hydrating for undergrad-inspired partying, reconnecting with former classmates, and dusting off that school-spirited gear.

Read below for a schedule of HBCU classic football matchups and homecoming celebrations.

Alex Warren
British songwriter and guitarist Alex Warren will make his VMAs debut hot on the heels of releasing his debut album, You’ll Be Alright Kid. He’s among the nominees for Best New Artist and chances are he’ll perform the single “Ordinary,” which reached No. 1 on both the U.S. and UK charts this summer.

Bailey Zimmerman Featuring the Kid Laroi
Country artist Bailey Zimmerman and the Kid Laroi will hit the Extended Play Stage Presented by Doritos® to perform their collaborative single “Lost.”

Busta Rhymes

Conan Gray
Pop singer Conan Gray will take the VMAs stage for the first time, to play “Vodka Cranberry” from his new album, Wishbone.

Doja Cat
Doja Cat’s theatrical antics have made her a VMAs fixture. She performed “Been Like This” and “You Right” in 2021, and, in 2023, delivered a medley of the Scarlet singles “Attention,” “Paint the Town Red,” and “Demons.” Tonight, she’s set to give “Jealous Type,” the lead single from her forthcoming album, Vie, its live debut.

J Balvin
Thirteen-time nominee J Balvin will be joined by Juistin Quiles and Lenny Tavárez for the trio’s new song “Zun Zun,” and then he and DJ Snake will play their single “Noventa” live for the first time. The reggaeton superstar has brought his collaborative spirit to past VMAs with assists from Bad Bunny, in 2019, and Ryan Castro, in 2022.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham fuel fresh reunion rumours after sharing cryptic post

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham have fuelled fresh speculation about reunion rumours after sharing yet another cryptic post on social media.

  • READ MORE: Christine McVie, 1943-2022: an eternal songbird

Just weeks after confirming the rerelease of their 1973 album ‘Buckingham Nicks‘, which was teased in a similar fashion, the former Fleetwood Mac bandmates shared a joint Instagram post on Friday (September 5) featuring an old clip of the two onstage.

In the video, Nicks sings the opening lyrics of their 1973 track ‘Frozen Love’: “You may not be as strong as me, and I may not care to teach you.” She then trails off before laughing: “That’s all I remember.”

Their latest post was captioned: “We remember the rest now.”  If an official reunion were announced, it would also be the first time Nicks and Buckingham joined forces since Buckingham was fired from Fleetwood Mac in 2018.

The pair originally dated between 1972 and 1976 and would remain bandmates for over 40 years, though it was ultimately their acrimonious relationship that would lead to Buckingham’s departure.

Since Buckingham’s departure, Mick Fleetwood has said he wishes Buckingham and Nicks would “pal up a bit more” and “just say everything’s OK”. He also similarly admitted last year that “it’s no secret, it’s no tittle-tattle that there is a brick wall there emotionally. Stevie’s able to speak clearly about how she feels and doesn’t feel, as does Lindsey.”

“But I’ll say, personally, I would love to see a healing between them – and that doesn’t have to take the shape of a tour, necessarily,” he added.

However, shortly after Buckingham’s firing in 2018, Fleetwood told People that it was “all Stevie’s doing,” and that she “basically gave the band an ultimatum that either I had to go or she would go.”

Nicks would deny the accusations made by Fleetwood, clarifying: “I did not demand he be fired. Frankly, I fired myself. I proactively removed myself from the band and a situation I considered to be toxic to my well-being. I was done. If the band went on without me, so be it.”

The ‘Buckingham Nicks’ reissue will seemingly be the closest chance to a Fleetwood Mac reunion; a full reunion with the band currently appears to be unlikely due to Christine McVie’s passing in 2022. Nicks has said that without the late McVie, “there is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together.”

Elsewhere, Stevie Nicks has said she’s working on a new album, saying it was made up of “real stories, memories of mine, of fantastic men”.

At Historic Nirvana Exhibit Closing in Seattle, Fans Bid Farewell

by jummy84 September 7, 2025

It’s a perfectly dreary Saturday in Seattle as the morning rain has subsided and cooled off an unseasonably warm September. Earlier in the day, the doors of the Museum of Pop Culture, or MoPop as it’s colloquially called, opens its doors for what they know will be its busiest day in years. A month ago, the museum announced their unpopular decision to close its ever-popular Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses exhibit after 14 years, with a farewell gala planned for September 6.

Thousands of Nirvana fans made the pilgrimage Saturday to see many of the artifacts one last time: Kurt Cobain’s artworks, smashed and un-smashed guitars, stage-worn clothes, rare photographs, personal letters, the MTV Unplugged setlist, and more, all displayed in chronological order to tell the story of the band’s Aberdeen beginnings and punk rock escapism to their meteoric rise and sudden, tragic end.

The exhibit, which also shined a spotlight on the Pacific Northwest grunge movement that orbited around Nirvana — think Screaming Trees, Tad, Mudhoney, etc. — had resided at the Experience Music Project (EMP), and then the rebranded MoPop, in various forms for nearly 15 years, and was a constant draw for Seattle tourism, siphoning off foot traffic from the nearby Space Needle. Over 30 years after Cobain’s death, Nirvana remains as popular as ever, and have become not just the Pacific Northwest’s defining band, but perhaps the entire country’s. So, why is the exhibit now closing?

“It wasn’t really one thing, it was a number of things,” MoPop curator Jacob McMurray, who created the Nirvana exhibit, tells Rolling Stone a day before the closing ceremony. “An exhibition is a living, evolving creature. I wanted it to be very community-oriented. I wanted the primary sources to be telling the tale and kind of providing those objects. So there’s 20 different lenders to that show who provided different objects. We also have objects in our permanent collection that are in that exhibition as well. So there’s a bit of that, where lenders want their stuff back because they miss it, or because they want to sell stuff at auction or they have other ideas for other projects.

“The Nirvana exhibit has been up for longer than any other exhibit that we’ve ever had,” McMurray adds. “Let’s use it as an opportunity to recast our Seattle music story. Have an exhibit that still includes Nirvana and all of these other bands, but also as the opportunity to tell some broader, more inclusive stories.”

These Pacific Northwest stories extend outside of grunge: McMurray cited the city’s early hip-hop movement, glam rock band Ze Whiz Kids, and Portland’s the Kingsmen of “Louie Louie” fame as other artists that played a crucial role in the region’s musical history.

“What if we created an exhibit that told 15 to 20 vignette stories across time and genre that will always include [grunge] — the stuff that people really want to see as tourists or when you think of Seattle music — but where we’re able to constantly highlight these stories that were also very important, but maybe don’t get as much airplay.,” McMurray says. “Nirvana is part of MoPop’s DNA and will always be here, but as a museum, we also just want to tell different stories all of the time.”

McMurray’s personal favorite items in the exhibit: A handwritten letter that Melvins singer Buzz Osborne sent his friend Krist Novoselic forecasting that this Cobain kid “might have some kind of future in music,” as well as the reassembled remains of a guitar Cobain smashed at an Evergreen State College dorm show in 1988.

“Maybe there’s 50 people in the audience, and [Cobain] probably doesn’t have enough money to pay rent, much less buy another guitar, and for some reason, he smashes that guitar out of the spirit of punk rock nihilism,” McMurray says. “That idea that one, [Cobain] was so moved to do that, and then two, somebody in the audience was so fucking psyched about that that they grabbed that guitar and held onto it for like another 10 years before we acquired it.”

Longtime MoPop museum guide and resident music expert Neal Kosaly-Meyer, who on Saturday led the final two guided tours for a select number of fans, also pointed to the Osborne letter to Novoselic about Cobain as one of the items he’ll miss the most. “There’s that prophetic line at the end: ‘I think he might have some kind of future in music if he keeps at it.’ I think that’s beautiful,” Kosaly-Meyer says.

(This writer’s favorite items: The sacred text that is the printed MTV Unplugged set list housed behind plexiglass, and early photo proofs of the naked baby on the Nevermind cover with the handwritten note: “If anyone has a problem with his dick we can remove it.”)

In addition to one last walk through the exhibit, Saturday’s closing ceremony touted extracurricular activities like shirt screen-printing, zine-making, DJs spinning grunge classics, a theater showing Nirvana’s concert films and music videos, and a panel of Seattle area music folk — including McMurray, Sub Pop CEO Megan Jasper, and Recording Academy executive (and Seattle native) Jessica Toon — discussing the grunge era, the exhibit’s impact, and the museum’s future. What wasn’t on the lineup, however, was the biggest (and definitely tallest) surprise of the afternoon: An unannounced appearance by Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, who provided the opening remarks prior to the panel.

“I started to get involved with, it was EMP, Experience Music Project, then MoPop, and it was just a great place to keep my stuff,” Novoselic joked. “Like, ‘Why is this guitar under my bed? Or, ‘why am I playing this guitar at a gig when I’m going to lose it and it’s gonna get ripped off. These are basses I played with Nirvana.’ So I donated to the museum. ‘Here you go.’ And people enjoyed them.”

Novoselic added, “Just that thinking and foresight like, ‘This is a vault with certain conditioned air and certain fire suppression. Security, white gloves… this is a bass that I bought for like 300 bucks at a pawn shop, and now it’s this artifact. It’s priceless.”

Krist Novoselic at MoPop’s exhibit closing panel

Following the panel, Novoselic hung around to chat and take photos with every Nirvana-shirted adult and Cobain-looking teenager that approached him. Sidling up to the towering figure, I asked him how he felt about the exhibit coming to an end. “Grateful,” Novoselic said, and not because he’s getting his stuff back.

Trending Stories

“Grateful, because all this” — motioning to the still-packed theater, the dozens of fans waiting to meet him, the throngs of people still waiting on the hours-long line to walk the exhibit one last time — “just shows how much we meant to people.”

The exhibit spans just seven years, from 1988 to 1994. For the band, less than half that time was spent in the mainstream. One of the displays captured Cobain’s quote about why he chose the name Nirvana: “In Webster’s terms, ‘nirvana’ means freedom from pain, suffering, and the external world, and that’s pretty close to my definition of punk rock.” During his guided tour, Kosaly-Meyer extensively quoted Buddhist text about the meaning of nirvana. The astrophysicist Michio Kaku once described it more succinctly, “Never-ending, no beginning, no end.”
