Reaching for snacks often? Know what triggers cravings and how food choices are evolving

Are you frequently reaching out for unhealthy snacks? Did you wonder what drives these irresistible cravings? You may regard this silly temptation as lazy or a lack of willpower, but there’s actual biology which shapes the cravings for sugary, salty and fatty foods.

What is the psychology behind junk food temptation?

Dr (Miss) Sumit Grover, clinical psychologist and life coach, shared with HT Lifestyle the psychology behind junk food. According to her, cravings for junk food come from ancient survival instincts as the brain naturally seeks sugar, salt and fat for energy. But today, the food industry exploits this by creating ultra-processed foods that trigger dopamine and give instant comfort. Advertising further intensifies the urges.

If you are worried that you don’t have enough willpower, you have to understand that biology and emotional conditioning are also at play here. The psychologist added, “Indulging in unhealthy foods is not a matter of weak willpower; it’s a matter of complex interaction between brain chemistry, emotional regulation, and environmental conditioning.”

“Cravings also rise during stress, fatigue, or emotional distress as the individual craves such food for immediate relief or immediate gratification,” she highlighted, adding that this pattern of seeking comfort from these foods turns into a habit, where the brain begins to associate junk food with comfort.

How to change the attitude towards junk food?

To change the attitude towards junk food, as per the psychologist, one should start by identifying what triggers their cravings, which primarily are boredom, stress, loneliness, and body image issues.

She suggested that the mind can be ‘reprogrammed.’ Elaborating on this, Sumit said, “The mind can be reprogrammed by replacing unwanted food with wholesome but satiating food, for example, sweets with fruit or fried/baked food with grilled/baked food.”

A mindset shift is also required. “Reframing food as fuel, and not comfort, through cognitive-behavioural methods can be a sustainable, balanced shift in the thought process,” She added.

As pointed out before, emotional eating is one of the reasons for gravitating towards junk foods, as they bring joy. The psychologist noted that depression and eating disorders are rooted in low self-esteem and a need for control. Here, the control is gained by bingeing on food.

Sumit further explained why emotional eating ends up in a vicious cycle you can’t seem to get out of, “Food is used as a means of deflecting and regulating painful feelings such as sadness, emptiness, or loss for many people. Emotional eating will yield short-term respite with the release of ‘feel-good’ chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, but the relief will be temporary. Guilt or shame typically follows soon, and these can complicate the cycle of depression.” She highlighted that practices like CBT, mindfulness, journaling, or simply talking to someone trusted help to channel the emotions.

But all hope is not lost. In recent years, people have become more and more conscious about clean, mindful eating. While there may still be occasional indulgence, there’s a positive shift towards healthy eating. But here’s the catch: they are not giving up on taste either. People keep an eye out for foods that get the balance between nutrition and good taste right.

Dr Yashawant Kumar, founder and CEO, Benefic Nutrition, shared with us that right now we are entering an ‘era of healthy indulgence.’

As foodies are growing health-conscious, they are trying to strike a balance by opting for flavour-first nutrition. Dr Kumar explained, “Flavour-first nutrition is booming in India, blending traditional ingredients with global trends. Indians no longer see health and taste as opposites. They want laddoos with protein and chips with quinoa.”

Describing the evolution of the flavour-first nutrition trend, he said, “From 2015 onwards, we saw protein supplements become tastier with flavours like chocolate and vanilla. Then, startups proved healthy snacks could be delicious too. The pandemic pushed people towards immunity-boosting yet indulgent foods, and by 2023, with the International Year of Millets, mainstream brands joined in with millet chocolates, nutri bars and masala oats.”

Revealing the market stats, primarily millennials and Gen Z are the biggest drivers of this trend. Dr Kumar also pointed out popular options currently trending in the market, such as chocolate and vanilla flavours, jaggery-based bars, jeera protein chips, masala makhana and dark chocolate bites.

From relaxed yacht rides off Santa Barbara to dinner dates in Montreal and late-night dancing in Paris, the two seem to be comfortable with one another-and sources say things are getting serious.

Trudeau, 53, has endured a period of personal and professional change, following his separation from Sophie Grégoire in 2023 and his resignation as Prime Minister earlier this year. According to a source close to the former leader, Perry entered his life at a time when he was seeking renewal and stability. “Justin has faced a lot of upheaval in recent years,” the insider shared. “But Katy’s presence has truly lifted his spirits. He’s laughing again and feels more relaxed and happy.”

One political insider familiar with the couple described them as “very much a couple.” While their schedules are jam-packed, they make it a priority to carve out time for each other. “He goes the extra mile to be with her whenever possible,” says the source.

Tamannaah Bhatia’s fitness coach shares 3 ways to control your evening cravings

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

The urge to reach out for a snack is very tempting in the evening. These cravings can be overwhelming as one may go overboard and overeat unhealthy junk to get rid of hunger pangs. But if you are on a calorie-deficient plan or general weight loss journey, it may derail your goals.

Tamannaah Bhatia’s fitness trainer revealed how you can curb your cravings. (Picture credit: Instagram)

Addressing this common issue, Celebrity fitness coach Siddhartha Singh, who has worked with stars like Tamannaah Bhatia, shared 3 ways one can curb their evening hunger pangs.

ALSO READ: Fitness trainer reveals 5 things that made her weight loss journey easier: Walk a lot, fix sleep and more

Here are the three ways one can reduce cravings as suggested by the fitness coach:

1. Increase protein and fibre intake in nutrition

First up is to ensure your day’s nutrition is not falling short. This means you need to start by modifying your diet and adding two key essentials: protein and fibre.

The fitness coach explained about the value they bring to your life, “Number one, increase protein and fibre intake in your nutrition. Have more protein, have more fibre. This is going to keep you fuller for longer.”

2. Are you really hungry

The second point Siddhartha drew attention to was to understand the reasoning behind the cravings, and whether they are genuine or not.

“Ask yourself, are you craving because you are hungry? Or are your cravings because you are just bored or stressed? In those cases, think about standing up and walking around for ten minutes,” he said. “Even if you are in a small room, usually 99.9 per cent of the time after that ten-minute walk, you won’t be craving anything anymore.”

Recognising the difference between real hunger and emotional eating is the first step to controlling hunger pangs. You may be confusing your psychological hunger with a physiological one. As the fitness coach revealed, walking is one way to reduce the intensity of emotional hunger. Walking helps reduce stress, so after a good walk, you get better clarity.

3. Pre-planning

When you are hungry, you reach out for anything and everything nearby. But if you plan, you take control of the situation before the craving takes control of you. Often, one doesn’t think straight when they are hungry; logic and reasoning are the last things that come to mind when those hunger pangs hit hard.

Instead, the fitness coach suggested pre-planning. He explained, using his own experience as an example, “If you know, like me, that you are going to crave something at around 5:30 PM in the evening, my cravings are usually crunchy and sweet so I plan my snacks around something like a Greek Yoghurt bowl with some berries and maybe some granola in it. It’s going to give me high protein, it is going to be healthy, in my nutrition plan, and it is going to make sure my cravings are conquered.”

When you are planning ahead, you start to become more careful about what you eat, instead of impulsively scarfing down anything.

Song Name – Who Wants To Live Forever

Check out Who Wants To Live Forever Song Lyrics

There’s no time for us
There’s no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams
Yet slips away from us?

Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever?
Ooh

There’s no chance for us
It’s all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment
Set aside for us

Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever? Ooh
Who dares to love forever
Oh, when love must die?

But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today

Who wants to live forever?
Who wants to live forever?
Forever is our today

Who waits forever anyway?

Emraan Hashmi would give up on his diet for this succulent Delhi staple — recipe inside

by jummy84 October 30, 2025
written by jummy84

The true origins of the butter chicken may be contested enough to turn into a legal slip knot (literally). But for all contemporary practical purposes, the silken, succulent menu favourite has Delhi written all over it, much of the thanks for this going to the untouchable legacies of city hotspots like Gulati, Havemore and Moti Mahal to name a few.

Emraan Hashmi would ghost his diet for Delhi’s butter chicken — Chef Sanjeev Kapoor’s recipe (Photos: Instagram, Gulati)

Emraan Hashmi, who was recently in the capital to promote his upcoming film, Haq, also starring Yami Gautam, spilled a little secret. During the audience questions round for Stars In The City with Sonal Kalra, he admitted Delhi’s butter chicken to very much be the dish he’d cheat on his strict diet for.

If you’re looking to give him company in spirit, follow the recipe below.

Butter chicken

Ingredients: Boneless chicken (cut into 1/5 inch pieces) – 400gms, lemon juice – 1tbsp, Kashmiri red chilli powder – 1tsp, salt to taste, butter – 2tbsps; for the marinade — yoghurt 1/2 cup, ginger paste – 2tsps, garlic paste – 2tsps, Kashmiri red chilli powder – 1/2tsp, garam masala powder – 1/2tsp, salt to taste, mustard oil – 2tsps; for the makhni gravy — butter – 2tbps, green cardamoms – 2, cloves – 2, black peppercorns – 2 to 3, cinnamon – 1 inch, ginger paste – 1tsp, garlic paste – 1tsp, tomato puree – 1/2 cup, red chilli powder – 1/2tsp, salt to taste, sugar/honey – 2tbsps, kasoori methi – 1/2tsp, fresh cream – 1/2 cup

Method: Massage the chicken pieces with the lemon juice, chilli powder and salt and refrigerate for half an hour. Hang the curd in a muslin cloth for 10 to 15 minutes as you mix all the ingredients for the marinade. Massage this onto the chicken pieces and refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours. Once the meat is done marinating, pre-heat the oven to 200C and pop the pieces onto skewers. Cook this for 10 to 12 minutes followed by a generous basting of butter. Cook for 2 more minutes and take off heat.

For the makhni gravy, heat generous amounts of butter in a non-stick pan. Add all the spices and cook for 2 minutes; then go in with the ginger and garlic pastes and cook for 2 more minutes. Now add the tomato puree, red chilli powder, salt and half a cup of water. Bring this to a boil then drop the heat to a simmer for 10 minutes. Add the sugar or honey with the kasoori methi next, followed by the cooked chicken. Simmer for 5 more minutes then go in with the fresh cream in a generous swirl.

Serve piping hot with stretchy naan.

(recipe from Chef Sanjeev Kapoor)

So who’s still following through on their diet?

Speculation is rife that Smriti Irani’s television comeback, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2, might be nearing its end. Ever since reports surfaced suggesting the show could go off-air, fans have been eager for clarity. Actor Hiten Tejwani, who plays Karan in the series, recently addressed the rumours in an interview with India Forums.

Hiten clarified that while he has no confirmation about the show’s conclusion, it was always intended to be a limited series. “I have no idea about what’s happening because I’m not shooting regularly. If I were on set more often, I might have more updates. When we got the call for the project, it was mentioned that this wouldn’t be an infinite series like before. It was supposed to have a limited run,” he explained. Reports suggest the show might wrap up early next year, though there has been no official announcement from the makers or the channel.

Originally aired in the early 2000s, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi became a cultural phenomenon, turning Smriti Irani’s character Tulsi into a household name. The show’s 2025 reboot has once again captured attention for its nostalgic appeal, dramatic storylines, and return of familiar faces from the original cast.

Smriti Irani, who has been weaving socially relevant issues into the show’s narrative, used the cameo to spotlight the health of pregnant women and newborns. Calling it a “historic moment for Indian television,” Irani told CNBC-TV18, “For far too long, women’s and children’s health has remained on the margins of mainstream dialogue. This initiative marks the start of a Jan Andolan — a people’s movement of awareness and empathy.”

Doctor who survived stage 4 breast cancer shares 5 powerful foods that can help your body fight cancer: From berries to…

by jummy84 October 30, 2025

You’ve probably heard the phrase “you are what you eat,” but it’s more real than you think. The right foods can actually help your body ward off serious diseases. From colourful veggies to everyday kitchen staples, some ingredients are loaded with cancer-fighting compounds.

Dr Mussallem reveals that specific foods, including soy and berries, can combat cancer risks.(Pexels)

Dr Dawn Mussallem, a double board-certified physician at Mayo Clinic and a stage 4 breast cancer survivor, shared in an October 23 podcast with American author Mel Robbins the top five foods that can help your body fight cancer and promote long-term wellness. (Also read: Fortis Delhi gastroenterologist says this superfruit ‘is a blessing for your heart’ )

1. Berries

“Research on berries is so exciting, both for breast cancer prevention and for survivors,” says Dr Mussallem. “For every two servings a week, they can reduce the risk of breast cancer, and for survivors, lower the risk of dying from it by 25%.”

2. Purple sweet potatoes

“These purple sweet potatoes have about 150% more anthocyanins than berries,” she explains. “These powerful compounds help turn off tumour genes and activate tumour suppressor genes, essentially putting the brakes on cancer growth.”

3. Cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts)

“These are some of the most powerful vegetables when it comes to breast cancer,” Dr Mussallem says. “They contain an enzyme called myrosinase, which helps the body absorb their cancer-fighting nutrients more effectively. They also help transform estrogen into a form that doesn’t stimulate cell growth.”

4. Beans and other fibre-rich plant foods

“This is an amazing plant protein and you’re not just getting protein, you’re getting fibre,” she notes. “A massive study with 17 million person-years of data showed that fibre can reduce the risk of dying from any cause, heart disease, and even pancreatic cancer. Another review found that fibre can cut overall cancer risk by 22%.”

5. Soy and edamame

“There are very few foods that, if you ever got breast cancer, can actually reduce your risk of dying, and edamame is one of them,” says Dr Mussallem. “Soy is also protective for the prostate and may reduce the risk of lung cancer. The American Cancer Society’s 2022 report showed soy can lower the risk of breast cancer recurrence by 25%.”

Dr Mussallem concludes by reminding us that food truly is medicine. “All these colourful fruits and vegetables are full of phytonutrients that help the body heal. The body has such wisdom to repair itself, we just have to give it the right tools.”

For those who grew up listening to his music, the nights were filled with nostalgia and emotion. Enrique delivered a hit-packed setlist featuring classics like Bailamos, Escape, Hero, and Be With You, as the audience sang along to every lyric. During Hero, he paused mid-performance to let the crowd take over, smiling warmly and greeting fans with a heartfelt “Namaste.” The connection between the singer and his Indian fans was electric, transforming the arena into a sea of voices and memories.

In a surprise moment, Enrique playfully introduced the iconic beat of Panjabi MC’s “Mundian Tu Bach Ke Rahi”, sending the crowd into a frenzy before shifting smoothly into his next number. While his vocals occasionally showed the wear of time, his charisma, energy, and sincerity more than compensated. Sharing memories of his first India visit in 2004, Enrique’s reminiscence drew loud cheers from long-time followers.

The audience also included several Bollywood celebrities — among them Malaika Arora, Rakul Preet Singh, Jackky Bhagnani, Sonal Chauhan, and Pragya Jaiswal — all seen dancing and singing along to his timeless hits.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), breast cancer is the most common cancer globally and in women worldwide, with an estimated 2.3 million new cases diagnosed in 2022. Therefore, women need to be aware of some crucial signs and symptoms, as early detection can save lives.

‘Self-examination saves lives’

Dr Tanaya, an Oxford University-trained doctor, trainee gynaecologist, and embryologist, also known as Dr Cuterus on Instagram, shared a video on October 28 where she talked about the 5 signs of breast cancer no woman should ignore.

Sharing the video, Dr Tanya wrote, “October is breast cancer awareness month. So, this month, why not promise yourself to take good care of your breasts? Every month, a week after your period, be sure to examine your boobs. Look for lumps, skin changes, discharge, or any sudden changes – If something seems wrong, see a doctor, because remember, self-breast examination saves lives.”

5 signs of breast cancer

Dr Tanya stressed that women should take the time to examine themselves, because though everyone has heard of lumps, there are other signs also that tell you about breast cancer. Furthermore, she advised women always to examine themselves after 1 week of their period.

Here are 5 signs, as per Dr Tanya, that you should be aware of regarding breast cancer.

2. No sudden colour changes: There should not be any sudden colour changes in the skin, along with sudden redness and swelling.

3. No texture: Dr Tanya also stressed that there shouldn’t be any texture range on the skin of your breasts. In medical terms, it is known as the ‘peau d’orange’ sign, which is described as a skin texture change characterised by dimpling and thickening, resembling the skin of an orange.

4. No growth: Any new growth, lump, or any sudden changes in the nipples are alarming signs and should be checked by an expert.

5. Check your ABCs: Naming armpits, breasts, and collarbones as ABCs, Dr Tanya stressed that you should check your armpit and your collarbones for any lumps or sudden changes. “You should check your ABCs while examining yourself for breast cancer.
