Mumbai orthopaedic surgeon Dr Manan Vora reveals how long you need to walk to burn off popular comfort foods like samosas, gulab jamun, pizza and chole bhature.

We all love indulging in our favourite comfort foods like samosas, gulab jamuns, or a plate of chole bhature, but have you ever wondered how much walking it actually takes to burn them off? Dr Manan Vora, orthopaedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist based in Mumbai, breaks down in his October 31 Instagram post, the calorie count of some of India’s most-loved foods and how long you’d need to walk to balance them out. (Also read: Apollo hospital orthopaedic surgeon with 28+ years of experience explains ‘why your knees hurt while climbing stairs’ )

Dr. Vora reveals calories in popular snacks and walking time to burn them off.

How much walking does it take to burn a samosa or slice of pizza

Dr Vora began his post by saying, “How much walking does it actually take to burn your favourite foods?” He then listed some of India’s most-loved comfort foods and the time it would take to burn them through walking.

“1 samosa or vada pav has about 250 calories, that’s around 50 minutes of walking,” he explained. “One slice of pizza equals roughly 285 calories, which takes close to an hour of walking.”

How to burn off chole bhature or gulab jamun

If you’re snacking on a packet of chips, Dr Vora noted that it adds up to “about 300 calories, you’d need a little over an hour of walking.” For those with a sweet tooth, “1 gulab jamun has 180 calories, which means around 35 minutes of walking,” he added. And the heaviest indulgence on the list? “One plate of chole bhature packs around 600 calories, you’d need to walk for almost 2 hours.”

However, Dr Vora made sure to emphasise that fitness isn’t about deprivation. “You don’t need to avoid these foods. Enjoy them occasionally and balance it with movement,” he wrote. “That’s how you stay fit without giving up what you love.”

Nutritionist reveals if ground flaxseeds are better: ‘Whole flaxseeds are very healthy, but…’

by jummy84 November 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Flaxseeds are one of the superfoods which have grown to become a wellness favourite lately. Whether they are added to smoothies or sprinkled over salads, this seed has earned a good reputation.

Flaxseeds are of two types: Ground and whole. (Picture credit: Shutterstock)

But are you taking the right kind of flaxseeds? This seed can be consumed in two forms: whole and ground. Whole flaxseeds come with a hard outer shell, while ground flaxseeds are usually crushed into a fine powder.

ALSO READ: Nutritionist shares what to eat before and during your periods to reduce bloating: Flaxseeds, dark chocolate and more

Nutritionist Deepshikha Jain, MSc Global Public Health Nutrition, UK and national diabetes educator, shared in an October 29 Instagram post about the key differences between these two forms of flaxseeds, and which one should you ideally consume for better nutrients.

Whole flaxseeds

According to the nutritionist, when you eat whole flaxseeds, your body cannot properly break them down.

“Flax seeds are very healthy, but when you are consuming whole flaxseed, they have a very hard outer covering, and that makes it harder for your body to digest and absorb the nutrients, making the flaxseeds just pass through your intestine and your body without getting absorbed,” she elaborated.

What does this mean? Your digestive system, because of the harder outer shell, cannot access the nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, fibre inside. Then the flaxseed remains undigested and passes through your intestine and comes out in stool. In other words, you don’t get much of the health benefits.

Ground flaxseeds

However, as per the nutritionist, if you remove the hard coating by grinding the flaxseed, which is how ground flaxseeds are prepared, then there are better advantages.

“When you ground the flax seeds, this will actually break the hard outer covering, making the nutrients more easily available for the body, hence giving you all the health benefits,” Deepshika said, highlighting the value of ground flaxseeds and the increased nutritional absorption in the absence of the outer coating.

“So it is always better to consume ground flaxseeds over whole flaxseeds if you want to get all the health benefits,” she recommends.

So what is the takeaway? While there isn’t any risk in choosing one form over the other, the difference lies in the wasted health potential if you stick to whole flaxseeds. Because of the interference of the hard coating, the body cannot extract all the nutrients, so they go unused. Next time, before you add flaxseeds to your smoothie bowl, consider grinding them up and sprinkling them for better nutrient absorption.

Pranit More’s Bigg Boss 19 Eviction: Health Issues Take Center Stage! | Glamsham.com

In a shocking turn of events, this weekend’s episode of Bigg Boss 19 aired with the news of one of its favorite comedians, Pranit More, leaving the show. The audience was excited to see who would get eliminated on October 31, 2025. But as a surprise, instead of the usual elimination, it got announced that Pranit had been taken to the hospital after his health started deteriorating inside the house.

Sources close to the show revealed that the makers had initially decided to suspend the eviction process and focus on Pranit’s medical needs. The doctors suggested immediate attention be given, and the production team has been getting him properly treated. Though the initial plan was to shift him to a secret room — as is sometimes done in the Bigg Boss format — his condition reportedly did not permit him to continue, hence his official elimination from the reality show.

Since the news broke, fans of the comedian have inundated social media platforms with emotional messages and well-wishes, praying for his recovery. Several fans were disappointed with his untimely exit and termed Pranit one of the most entertaining and genuine contestants this season. Pranit’s humor, cheerful personality, and camaraderie with housemates had made him a fan favorite since the show’s premiere.

Though neither Bigg Boss nor the channel has issued any statement regarding his health condition, sources close to the production have confirmed that he is receiving proper medical treatment and will recover soon.

Eating oats for breakfast every day? Dietitian says eating too much oatmeal can cause gas and bloating

Eating oats for breakfast every day? Dietitian says eating too much oatmeal can cause gas and bloating

by jummy84 November 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Oatmeal makes a filling and high-fiber breakfast, there’s no doubt. But if you have made a habit of eating just oats every morning, it may be time to bring variety on the plate. Oats are a type of cereal grain that taste great with milk, fruits, seeds and nuts, but eating them every day may come with its side effects for certain people.

Here’s why eating oats every day may not be good.(Adobe Stock)

Is it good to eat oats every morning?

Here are five reasons to consider changing your breakfast routine, according to Dr Pavithra N Raj, Chief Dietitian at Manipal Hospital.

1. Gluten sensitivity

Are oats entirely gluten-free? Oats do not contain gluten, but they are often processed in factories that also process grains containing gluten, such as wheat, barley, and rye. People can accidentally pick up gluten through cross-contamination. This is a problem for anyone with celiac disease or gluten sensitivities. “People with these conditions should choose certified gluten-free oats to reduce the risk of adverse reactions,” Dr Pavithra N Raj, Dietitian, tells Health Shots. Eating non-certified oats can often lead to discomfort, inflammation, and other health issues. If you are sensitive to gluten, talk to a healthcare professional before adding oats to your diet.

2. Flatulence and digestive distress

Oats are known for their high fiber content, which is good for digestion. However, if you’re not used to eating a lot of fibre, consuming too much oatmeal can cause gas and bloating. “Instead of making oats a daily choice, it’s better to increase your fiber intake gradually. Start with small portions and see how your body responds,” says the dietitian. This way, you can enjoy the benefits of oats without experiencing uncomfortable side effects from suddenly eating too much fibre.

3. Mineral absorption issues

Oats have phytic acid, which can block your body from absorbing important minerals like calcium, iron, and zinc. If you eat oats for breakfast regularly, it may not be beneficial for your overall nutrient intake. “Soaking or fermenting your oats before cooking can reduce their phytic acid levels,” shares Dr Pavithra. This helps your body absorb more nutrients. However, it does make your morning routine a bit more complicated. It takes extra time to prepare a quick oats breakfast.

4. Weight gain

Oats can help with weight management, but overeating can cause weight gain. “They contain 379 calories per 100 grams, so it’s easy to lose track of how much you eat, especially with large bowls of fruit,” says the expert. To manage your calorie intake, pay attention to your portion sizes. Instead of filling a big bowl each morning, try mixing in other breakfast options, such as smoothies, yoghurt parfaits, or veggie omelettes.

5. Nutrient deficiency

Oats are a healthy food, but they do not give you all the nutrients your body needs. If you only eat oats for breakfast, you may miss out on important nutrients. Dr Pavithra points out: “While oats are high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, it is important to have a variety of foods for well-rounded nutrition.” Including fruits, vegetables, and proteins can make your breakfast more balanced.

Are oats healthy to eat every day?

Oats have many health benefits, but it’s important to eat them in moderation. Try including oats 2-3 times a week, rather than every day. This way, you can enjoy their benefits without experiencing any downsides. Here are some key health benefits of oats:

  1. Packed with essential nutrients: Oats are packed with nutrients. They contain a significant amount of fibre, iron, B vitamins, and important minerals. This makes them a great addition to a healthy diet.
  2. Promote heart health: Oats can help lower harmful cholesterol levels, making them a heart-healthy choice when eaten in moderation. The soluble fibre beta-glucans in oats are especially beneficial for improving heart health.
  3. Sustain energy levels: “Oats give you steady energy because they contain complex carbohydrates. This makes them a good choice for breakfast, especially if you need lasting energy during busy mornings”, says the expert.
  4. Assist with blood sugar control: Oats have a low glycemic index, which helps maintain steady blood sugar levels. This is especially important for individuals who are at risk of developing diabetes.
  5. Boost digestive health: Oats are rich in soluble fibre, particularly beta-glucans, which can help enhance digestive health. This fibre supports regular bowel movements and helps prevent constipation.

What is the best way to eat oats for breakfast?

To enjoy oats without going overboard, use a balanced approach. You can enjoy overnight oats a few times a week by mixing them with yoghurt, chia seeds, and colourful fruits. On other days, try smoothies or vegetable-packed egg dishes for a healthier option.

The couple exchanged rings on October 31, 2025, in a private yet grand ceremony attended by close friends and family members. Sharing the joyous news on social media, Sirish wrote, “I’m finally & happily engaged to the love of my life, Nayanika!”

The pair looked radiant as they celebrated their special day. Sirish opted for an elegant white ethnic outfit, while Nayanika stunned in a classic red saree, embodying traditional charm. The event was a star-studded affair with members of the Allu–Konidela family in attendance, including Chiranjeevi, Ram Charan, Allu Arjun, and other close relatives.

Allu Arjun’s wife Sneha Reddy and their daughter Allu Arha also drew attention with their stylish appearances — Sneha in a lavender gown and little Arha looking adorable in a pink dress as she accompanied her mother.

Though the couple has always kept their relationship private, Sirish had hinted at their union earlier this year on the birth anniversary of his late grandfather, Allu Ramalingaiah, when he shared a heartfelt post about his engagement.

While details about Nayanika remain limited, reports suggest that she hails from Hyderabad and belongs to an affluent business family. The two are said to have been in love for some time before making their relationship official.

On the work front, Sirish was last seen in the 2024 fantasy action film Buddy, directed by Sam Anton. The Telugu remake of the Tamil hit Teddy starred Sirish as a pilot entangled in a supernatural mystery involving a woman’s soul trapped in a teddy bear. The film earned praise for its unique premise and emotional storytelling.

Neurosurgeon with 33 years of experience shares 4 reasons why you should give up the habit of complaining

by jummy84 November 1, 2025
written by jummy84

Do you crib often? Complaining about little things that don’t go your way. You may think, after all, what’s wrong about blowing off some steam? Whether it is traffic or latest situationship ghosting you, venting it out feels like a release. But going on and keep ranting about them again and again, over time, may make you lean towards pessimism more, and train your brain to stay unhappy.

Change your habit of complaining; otherwise, your perception changes for the worse. (Picture credit: Freepik)

ALSO READ: Neurosurgeon with 33 years of experience explains why you can’t sleep even when tired, shares 4 tips to rest better

Dr Prashant Katakol, a neurosurgeon with over 33 years of experience, shared in an Instagram video, posted on October 30, about why one shouldn’t complain all the time, suggesting reasons based in neuroscience.

1. Rewiring the brain for misery

“When you are complaining, you are rewiring your brain for misery,” Dr Katakol said. Neuroplasticity ensures that every complaint strengthens pessimism in you. Soon, good things stop getting even registered.”

This means when you keep complaining, pushing a tunnel vision on negative things, then your brain starts to get used to it. Neurplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and adapt, strengthens those negative thought patterns. Then, over time, it becomes second nature for the brain to spot the problems first, rather than feeling grateful or noticing good things.

2. Flooding body with stress hormones

When you complain, you put your body in a state of stress, activating all the stress hormones. Prolonged state of stress negatively affects both the physiological and psychological systems.

The neurosurgeon stressed,“Number two, you flood your body with stress hormones by complaining. This wrecks your mood, your focus and your immunity.”

In other words, even for trivial matters, when you complain, your body reacts as if you are under threat, releasing cortisol.

3. Starts to see only problems, not possibilities

Complaining all the time gives way to a cynical attitude where you keep expecting the worst outcomes and disasters. Dr Katakol said, “The brain trains itself to see only problems and not possibilities.”

When you regularly complain, the thinking patterns shift. You focus on what’s wrong and internalise a negative perception. Soon, what happens is you stop noticing the solutions, opportunities or silver lining as your entire focus is on the problem: why it happened rather than how it can be solved.

4. Shrinks brain

Turns out it also physically changes the shape of the brain? Dr Katakol added, “Chronic negativity shrinks the hippocampal cortex. The consequences are slower learning, weaker memory and less resilience.”

Solution

What is the way forward? According to the neurosurgeon, one needs to start ‘labelling’ it. “Practice awareness. When you notice yourself complaining, label it out loud, that I am complaining. This single act will drastically reduce your habit. Lesser the complaining, greater is the joy, it is as simple as that,” he said.

This means when one starts complaining, they don’t even realise that they are complaining. Chronic complaining becomes an instinct. But awareness helps you to respond with a more logical approach rather than irritation. Instead of being quick to express frustration, consider calling yourself out, which would help to interrupt the pessimistic loop you may fall into. Instead of getting irritated over it, reconsider if it’s actually worth losing your cool over it.

Manipal Hospital neurologist reveals why strokes can happen even to healthy people

Manipal Hospital neurologist reveals why strokes can happen even to healthy people

by jummy84 October 31, 2025
written by jummy84

Sometimes, despite any health issues, a major medical emergency like a stroke can strike. You may be doing everything right, or at least it may appear so, but still, you are at risk. To understand more about the hidden triggers that go unnoticed, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Satwant Sachdeva, senior consultant- neurology, Manipal Hospital, Patiala, who revealed that there are hidden culprits that quietly raise the risk of stroke in seemingly healthy individuals.

Brain stroke symptoms in women can be subtle and different from the classic signs. Here are some key signs to watch out for. (Freepik)

ALSO READ: Neurologist shares the 3S that silently increase your stroke risk

Describing how stroke occurs, he said, “A stroke strikes when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, reducing the amounts of oxygen and other essential nutrients that the brain needs.”

Among the many risk factors, hypertension and diabetes are well established. The neurologist added, “Hypertension and diabetes are two common culprits that lead to strokes, but hidden culprits like stress, dehydration, and genetic factors may also play a significant role.”

But there are some less obvious, hidden triggers which can quietly damage the body and slowly push one towards developing a stroke without showing any clear warning signs. So while the health parameters may look fine on paper, there are some silent factors which may be working in the background, increasing your stroke risks significantly.

Hidden triggers for stroke

Stress is one of the hidden triggers of stroke. (Picture credit: Shutterstock)
Stress is one of the hidden triggers of stroke. (Picture credit: Shutterstock)

Elaborating on the lesser-known causes, Dr Sachdeva explained, “Chronic stress and insufficient sleep increase levels of cortisol, which can damage blood vessels and lead to increased blood pressure.” While you are regularly stressed, your body stays in the state of stress, producing stress hormone, cortisol, which weakens your blood vessels, making your blood pressure rise and subsequently increasing the risk of a stroke.

The next trigger is dehydration. As if you are dehydrated, the neurologist revealed that the blood gets thicker and one becomes vulnerable to clotting. “Dehydration can make blood thicker and more susceptible to clotting,” he said.

Unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, crash dieting or excessive exercise, according to Dr Sachdeva, may also cause a stroke.

5 preventive measures for stroke

Strokes can be prevented with the help of a few simple lifestyle changes. The neurologist recommended these:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink enough water throughout the day to maintain healthy blood flow.
  2. Monitor Heart Health: Get regular check-ups to detect conditions like atrial fibrillation early.
  3. Know Your Family History: If strokes or clotting disorders run in your family, talk to your doctor about preventive screening.
  4. Adopt a Balanced Lifestyle: Avoid smoking and crash diets; instead, focus on moderation, nutritious food, and regular physical activity.
  5. Exercise Regularly: At least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days helps keep blood vessels healthy.

One of the reasons stroke is an emergency is that the initial signs are ignored. Dr Sachedva said, “Strokes usually begin quietly and with noticeable signs that can easily be ignored. A headache, sudden weakness or fatigue may seem benign, but they can all be the body signalling an urgent note.” He drew attention to how these warning signs often overlap with common issues like stress or exhaustion. Then they are often dismissed, until it’s too late.
