What You Should Know About Lemon Law – Hollywood Life

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

Buying your long-awaited dream vehicle can be the occasion for anticipation and a rush of excitement. Maybe it’s a car you’ve yearned for since you turned sixteen. Maybe it’s a car your favorite Hollywood celebrity drives, or used to drive. In either case, the day of that purchase is an exciting time.

However, in the weeks after your purchase, your dream vehicle could be  unexpectedly defective. A car is not an insignificant investment, and drivers deserve protection from an unaware purchase of a faulty vehicle. That is why lemon laws exist, and why you might need a lemon law attorney in Los Angeles.

Understanding Lemon Law

Owning a “lemon” vehicle can be frustrating; its defects may keep you from enjoying it, driving it safely, or reselling it. Fortunately for drivers, California passed the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act in 1975 to hold manufacturers accountable for the quality of their goods and to protect buyers.

State lemon laws like this one provide remedies (such as repair, vehicle repurchase, or replacement) to you if you’ve purchased a vehicle that, through no fault of your own, doesn’t work as advertised. There are stipulations to be aware of. The vehicle’s defect has to impair your use of it or detract from its safety or market value. The defect also needs to appear after a specific mileage after purchase. The lemon law typically applies after several failed attempts to repair the vehicle.

Lemon laws vary by state, and California has some of the strongest consumer protections. As long as the car is under warranty, California law covers both new and used vehicles up to 18 months or 18,000 miles after purchase. Replacement and full refund are potential remedies.

However, states like New York provide separate levels of remedy for new and various categories of used vehicles. Some states, like Alabama and Colorado, exclude RVs. The Kelley Blue Book offers this resource, where you can quickly check the lemon laws for each state. Some experts warn, however, that many state lemon laws haven’t been updated to account adequately for electric vehicles. Make sure to check your local law.

What to Do If You Think You Have a Lemon

Buying a lemon may be more common than you think. According to Cal Matters, 15,000 vehicle lemon law cases were filed in California in 2022, and 22,000 in 2023. And in L.A. County, 10% of all civil lawsuits are currently lemon law cases. While it won’t necessarily happen to you, as well, it could. If you think your new ride might be a lemon, here are the steps you need to take.

First, make sure to keep documentation of all repairs to the vehicle and of all your communications with the dealer or the manufacturer. You will need these to establish a timeline and to show that there have been unsuccessful attempts to repair your vehicle.

Second, if your car remains an unrepaired lemon and you do decide to take action, notify the dealer or manufacturer in writing. When you are preparing that letter, that may be a good time to seek arbitration or legal help.

An experienced lemon law attorney can help you file a lemon law claim against the manufacturer. An attorney can look at your repair order history and discuss with you whether you have standing. (Celebrities even sometimes take proactive steps, like keeping a lemon law attorney on retainer, to ensure their classic and vintage car purchases go smoothly.)

Why Lemon Laws Matter

“A car is one of the largest purchases most consumers make in their lifetimes, often sinking them deep into debt,” write the authors of the Lemon Index (CARS Foundation, 2022). The report goes on to add that in 2021’s fourth quarter, the average car loan in the U.S. was $39,721. Consequently, “many consumers are not in a position to pour more money into unexpected repairs after purchasing a new or recently used vehicle.”

Lemon laws provide peace of mind for drivers who might otherwise have little recourse after purchasing a vehicle that proves unsafe or otherwise undrivable. And because these laws require accountability of manufacturers, they may help fewer lemons hit the market.

When you are preparing to buy a vehicle, especially a new vehicle, take a few moments to research the lemon laws in your state. Find out what kind of legal coverage your potential purchase has. After all, buying a car should give you more freedom, not more frustration, and your local lemon law can help keep it that way.

Adam Saunders in Coming-of-Middle-Age Comedy ‘Re-Election’ Trailer

“Now he’s older, not necessarily wiser.” Ain’t that the truth. Picturehouse has revealed the official trailer for an indie comedy film titled Re-Election, a sort of modern riff on the 1999 comedy classic Election. It’s set for release in October starting at limited theaters and with more screens before it’s on VOD. Desperate to re-discover the mojo he lost as a teenager, a disappointed middle-aged man re-enrolls in high school in order to run for class president again. But after 30 years, things have changed a bit. Of course, Gen Z rules now. A nostalgic coming-of-middle-age comedy from director-writer-producer Adam Saunders – this also stars Saunders as Jimmy, along with Tony Danza, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Kym Whitley, and Rizwan Manji. This also reminds me of the Adam Sandler 90s classic Billy Madison, but it looks like a whole different story here. “Re-Election is a throwback comedy that audiences need & will enjoy this fall,” they say. Vote Jimmy!

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Adam Saunders’ indie film Re-Election, direct from YouTube:

Re-Election Film Poster

High school haunts everyone, in one way or another. For Jimmy Bauer (Adam Saunders), it was losing the race for class president during his senior year back in 1995, which caused him to drop out. He’s now a 40-something underdog stuck working in a memorabilia store owned by his dad Stanislaw (co-starring TV comedy icon Tony Danza). So Jimmy decides to go back to school for his missing class credits — and win the election he’s sure will make his life right. But after 30 years, things have changed a bit, and with the help of his new Gen-Alpha friend Noa & former classmate-turned-girlfriend Ama, Jimmy learns that it’s not how we start a journey that matters — it’s how we finish it. Re-Election is both written and directed by American producer / filmmaker Adam Saunders, making his second feature film after directing Dotty & Soul previously. Produced by Erika Hampson, Mac Hendrickson, & Saunders. Picturehouse will release the Re-Election film in select US theaters starting October 10th, 2025 coming up this fall. Anyone into this?

What You Should Know – Hollywood Life

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

The popularity of TikTok, Instagram reels, podcasts, video essays, and other similar projects has inspired many creators to enter the public arena with their own content. The desire to stand out among other content creators often sends people looking for unique music to include in their videos to give them a distinctive brand.

These content creators must be cautious in their selection. Using copyrighted music can result in a costly copyright strike or demonitization, so content creators often look for copyright-free music or royalty-free music. People often confuse the two, which can be detrimental to creators who make content for a living and people who just upload fun videos on occasion.

To avoid confusion that could lead to copyright strikes, legal issues, and licensing fees, it’s important to understand the distinction between these two types of music.

Understanding Copyright Basics

Copyright protects creators and gives them the exclusive right to determine how their original work is used. Original works are art, books, films, music, and software. Once a work is created, it is copyrighted automatically.

Another person cannot use copyrighted material without permission. This includes creating new works based on the original, distributing the original, displaying it, performing or reproducing it.

Copyright protects creativity so creators can benefit and control their original works. Copyright law also sets an expiration for copyright and has limits on the copyright, such as fair use.

Copyright infringement can be costly. In one year, 70.6% of the copyright offenses involved infringements amounting to $1 million or less, with the average around $229,302. [United States Sentencing Commission, 2021]

Even powerful companies can be sued for copyright infringement, though these cases are often difficult to prove.

Copyright-Free in the Public Domain

Copyright-free original works are no longer protected by copyright and can be used by anyone. The creator no longer needs to grant permission, receive payment, or be credited. This happens when an original work enters the public domain because the copyright has expired.

In 2025, thousands of original works passed into the public domain, including books by William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, and many more. Popular characters Popeye and Buck Rogers also became public domain. [Duke University, 2025]

Musical compositions from before 1929 are now in the public domain. Sound recordings have a different rule, and those before 1923 are no longer copyrighted. Though a song’s composition may be in the public domain, the recording of that song may still be copyrighted.

Royalty Free Music and Clear Usage Rights

Royalty-free music is different in that permission for use is granted after a one-time fee. Sometimes this fee is free, depending on the source of the music. The free grants the rights to use the music track under certain conditions, and the purchaser doesn’t have to pay ongoing royalties or licensing fees. Sometimes attribution is required for use.

It is important for content creators to understand that royalty-free music is still under the protection of copyright, and the creator still retains all their rights. This makes royalty-free music a good choice for content creators who make podcasts, long-form videos, games, and so forth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can copyright-free music be used in commercial projects?

Copyright-free music can be used in commercial projects once it is verified that the music is in the public domain. It is best to check for any attribution requirements before proceeding with its use.

Q2: Does royalty-free music require attribution?

Though this isn’t common, the specific license agreement associated with the one-time fee should be reviewed to make sure the user complies.

Q3: How can it be verified that music is truly copyright-free?

To verify music is copyright-free, the user should use due diligence to check various sources to verify publication dates, and can also check with the United States Copyright Office database.

Q4: What will happen if copyrighted music is used without permission?

If copyrighted music is used without the creator’s permission, the user is risking copyright strikes, monetization loss, and possible litigation.

Inspiring Doc ‘Memphis to the Mountain’ Trailer About a Climbing Trip

“Not everyone’s going to be able to make it up.” Hulu has unveiled the official trailer for Memphis to the Mountain, a new three-part documentary series – now streaming on Hulu as of this weekend. An inspiring story about how rock climbing can actually change lives. The project was inspired by & born from Memphis Rox, a nonprofit climbing gym / community center founded by Tom Shadyac and Chris Dean, which has served as a beacon of hope and opportunity in South Memphis (check it out here). Known as one of the most underserved communities in the country, South Memphis is a neighborhood with roots in Black American history and culture—home to Stax Records, the birthplace of Aretha Franklin, and the final pulpit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., where he delivered his iconic “Mountaintop” speech a day before his assassination. Memphis to the Mountain captures a bold, cinematic expedition in which a handful of young climbers from Memphis Rox embark on a life-changing journey to climb a big rock wall on Mt. Kenya in Africa—leaving behind daily adversity to scale new literal and metaphorical heights in the world of elite mountaineering. This is actually a really moving story to tell and confirms how rock climbing is more than just a fun sport.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Zachary Barr’s doc Memphis to the Mountain, from YouTube:

Memphis to the Mountain follows a determined group of young climbers from one of South Memphis’s most overlooked and hard-edged neighborhoods—where climbing is virtually unknown—as they set out to conquer a 16,000-foot rock tower on Mt. Kenya. Over the course of a year, they must endure grueling preparation, training alongside some of the sport’s most renowned figures, including Alex Honnold and Philip Henderson. Battling thin air, raw fear, and the limits of their own endurance, they come to realize that the hardest climb isn’t the mountain—it’s transforming who you believe you can be. A story of grit, transformation, and the unshakable power of reaching beyond what you thought possible. Memphis to the Mountain is directed by filmmaker Zachary Barr, director of the doc film Black Ice and many Reel Rock films as well. Made by Sender Films & Shady Acres Entertainment. Exec produced by Tom Shadyac, Kelley L. Carter, Jason Aidoo, Peter Mortimer, & Zachary Barr. Hulu will debut the Memphis to the Mountain doc series streaming on Hulu starting September 5th, 2025 – it’s available to watch now. Anyone interested?

“We feel we decide our own fates, but we don’t.” Oscilloscope Labs has unveiled the official US trailer for a intriguing documentary film called Mistress Dispeller, which originally premiered at last year’s Venice Film Festival. It also played at tons of other fests, including Toronto, Zurich, Chicago, & Hot Springs, and will hit US theaters this October. Desperate to save her marriage, a woman in China hires a professional to go undercover and help break up her husband’s affair in an attempt to save her marriage. An intriguing look at a new industry in China featuring a woman known as “Mistress Dispeller” about couples who want to try & stay married. With strikingly intimate access, Mistress Dispeller follows this unfolding family drama from all corners of a love triangle. The production team followed different couples and love triangles for 3 years until they found one that stayed through to the end without withdrawing their consent. It looks much more profound than it sounds, not really criticizing the infidelity as much as exploring why marriages fail & how people can work on fixing their issues, whatever they may be. The poster art is also quite lovely – view below.

Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Elizabeth Lo’s film Mistress Dispeller, direct from YouTube:
