Robert Redford was and always will be one of the most respected actors and filmmakers, but his priority was his children and family. The late All Is Lost actor, who died at 89 in September 2025, welcomed several kids during his first marriage, and few of them followed in his footsteps by building their own careers in TV and film.

Learn more about the Robert’s children below as we look back on his life and career.

How Many Kids Did Robert Redford Have?

Robert had four children with his first wife, Lola Van Wagenen. However, their first child, Scott Redford, died when he was just 2 1/2 months old from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), a.k.a “crib death.” SIDS is when a baby, usually within the first year of birth, suddenly dies.

David James, who also went by James Redford, died when he was 58 in 2020 from bile duct cancer.

By the end of his life, Robert had two surviving children: Shauna and Amy.

Scott Anthony Redford

Scott was born on September 1, 1959. He was Robert and Lola’s first child. Unfortunately, he died just two months after his birth from sudden infant death syndrome. He was buried in Provo, Utah, where his late father lived during his final years.

Shauna Jean Redford

Shauna was the second child of Robert and Lola. Born on November 15, 1960, Shauna is now a painter and is married to a journalist named Eric Schlosser.

David James Redford

David James followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a filmmaker and environmentalist. He focused on documentaries and attended Robert’s alma mater, the University of Colorado Boulder to study creative writing and filmmaking. He later obtained a master’s degree in literature from Northwestern University.

Before dying in 2020 from bile duct cancer, David James earned screenwriting credits for films, including Cowboy Up and Skinwalkers. He made his directorial debut with Spin. He had also undergone two liver transplants in his life to manage primary sclerosing cholangitis: a disease that affects the gallbladder and liver.

Amy Hart Redford

Like her dad, Amy became an actor and a filmmaker. She attended San Francisco State University to study Drama/Theatre Arts before going to Robert’s alma mater, University of Colorado Boulder, then LAMDA in England to focus on theatre.

Amy has appeared in countless films and television shows, including Maid in Manhattan, This Revolution, Sunshine Cleaning, The Last Confederate: The Story of Robert Adams, The Understudy, Sex and the City, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and The Sopranos.

After establishing herself as an actress, Amy started directing movies, such as The Guitar.

Leighton Meester and Adam Brody’s 2025 Emmys Prep Was Full of Laugh Attacks, Tunes, and Skincare

Everybody wants this glow-up! Leighton Meester and Adam Brody turned heads at the 2025 Emmy Awards at Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, California on Sept. 14, but before the couple hit the red carpet, they indulged in pre-show rituals that set the tone for the night.

Celebrity makeup artist Bethany McCarty and groomer Kim Verbeck shared all the behind-the-scenes details on the pair’s prep with ET, which was equal parts fun and equal parts glam.

Maya Dehlin Spach/WireImage

Before the actor and actress slipped into their coordinating Prada ensembles, with Brody in a pale blue suit and Meester in a baby pink gown, the beauty pros perfected radiant looks for the duo.

“With Leighton, we used the Bubble cleanser, layered serums, cream, and eye cream for a fresh, dewy base,” McCarty explains. …If we have time, I’ll do some light lymphatic drainage massage while applying cream to de-puff and wake up circulation. If not, I keep the application gentle but intentional.”

For Brody, the approach was just as thoughtful. “I always like to start with the cleanest skin possible and then move into the most moisturized,” Verbeck shares. “After applying the Enhanse Super Moisture, I use a couple massage techniques to get rid of tension and add some lymphatic drainage.”

Their meticulous pre-show routines ensured both stars shined on and off camera.

“Good skin prep is everything. It keeps makeup seamless, fresh, and youthful without any heaviness or creasing,” McCarty says. “The better the skin looks, the less makeup you need.”

Verbeck adds, “The entire grooming process is usually around 30-40 minutes and ultimately, I get the skin to a matte finish for the event.”

Once their luminous skin was set, the Gossip Girl went on to fully embrace a retro prom aesthetic.

“Leighton’s ’60s inspired gown alongside Adam’s tux led us to a classic cat eye, rosy cheeks, a matte lip, a hint of shimmer to echo her dress, and a soft nod to Brigitte Bardot with her hair,” McCarty shares.

And the energy in the room was just as vibrant as their get-ups.

“It’s always a fun vibe with our whole crew,” Verbeck dishes. “There’s always music playing and we’re all making each other laugh and having good conversation.”

McCarty continues, “It honestly feels like playing dress-up with a friend. We have at least one major laughing attack, catch up about life and our kids, and just have fun.”

Freaky Teaser Trailer for Horror Film ‘Dolly’ About a Monstrous Figure

“Whatchu think – you can just do whatever you want now?!” Blue Finch Films has unveiled the first look teaser trailer for a scary, unsettling new horror film playing at genre festivals this year. From director Rod Blackhurst (of Blood for Dust), Dolly is a freaky horror film about a “monstrous figure” that is screening at both Fantastic Fest & the Sitges Film Festival this fall. A young woman, Macy, fights for survival after being abducted by a deranged, monster-like figure who wants to raise Macy as their child. A daring blend of New French Extremity and 1970s American horror. This “chilling folk-horor tale” features Fabianne Therese, Seann William Scott, Ethan Suplee, Kate Cobb, and the “transmasc wrestler” Max the Impaler. FF adds this juicy tidbit: “Nothing is ever quite as it seems, except of course for the absolutely goopy practical effects in this lo-fi throwback to the isolated murder families of The Hills Have Eyes and the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Director Rod Blackhurst combines his clear inspiration with a uniquely demented point of view, building on his previous work.” Sounds gnarly! And the footage is just as frightening & weird.

Here’s the first teaser trailer for Rod Blackhurst’s horror film Dolly, direct from YouTube:

Dolly Horror Teaser

Dolly Horror Teaser

From Fantastic Fest: “Chase and Macy drop off Chase’s daughter, Evy, and then hike to a nearby overlook where he plans to propose. Those plans are soon forgotten when they discover a weird ‘art installation’ of many dirty, broken dolls. Unfortunately the dolls are actually more of an altar to the victims of Dolly—a violent, hulking, child-like person in a tattered dress and a porcelain doll mask—who arrives to bury the decapitated corpse of their latest plaything. While they have little interest in Chase outside of violence, Macy catches their eye and is taken home to become their newest doll. With the help of a voice in the walls, Macy quickly realizes she must navigate her captor’s delusions and family trauma to have any hope of surviving the nightmare and the filthy house she finds herself in. Of course that means playing her role of a doll—including diaper changes and feedings—until she can find the right moment to make her move.” 🎀

Dolly is directed by American filmmaker Rod Blackhurst, director of the films Here Alone, Amanda Knox, Blood for Dust, and The Tennessee 11 previously, plus many short films & other projects. The screenplay is written by Brandon Weavil and Rod Blackhurst. Produced by Joseph C. Grano, Noah Lang, Bryce McGuire, Ross O’Connor, Esteban Sanchez, Isaiah Smallman, Betty Tong, and Rod Blackhurst. The film is premiering soon at Fantastic Fest 2025 in Austin, TX later this month and also at the Sitges Film Festival after that. No other release dates are set yet – stay tuned for more updates on this movie. Who wants to watch this horror?

“We are, all of us, drawn to monsters… We flirt with death to prove we’re truly alive. And if we can’t stop, then that small fire we lit might just burn the whole house down… with us still inside.” One helluva quote to start with! Netflix has revealed a first look teaser trailer for a new series titled The Beast in Me, a crime thriller following a woman investigating her neighbor. This is set to launch on Netflix in November this fall. From the creators of “Homeland” comes another tricky new series. Author Aggie Wiggs, grieving her the loss of her son, finds new purpose unraveling the mystery behind neighbor Nile Sheldon’s vanished wife and his suspicious dealings. At once horrified and fascinated by this man, Aggie finds herself compulsively hunting for the truth – chasing his demons while fleeing her own – in a game of cat & mouse that might turn deadly. Interesting… Starring Claire Danes, Matthew Rhys, Brittany Snow, & Natalie Morales. Also with Jonathan Banks, David Lyons, Tim Guinee, Hettienne Park, Deidre O’Connell, Aleyse Shannon, Will Brill, Kate Burton, Bill Irwin, Amir Arison, Julie Ann Emery. This looks compelling! Lots of secrets hidden within.

Here’s the teaser for Gabe Rotter & Howard Gordon’s series The Beast in Me, from Netflix’s YouTube:

“The title of the series comes from a Johnny Cash song — but it’s not as simple as it might initially seem. It really is about all of our complicity. Whether it’s Monica Lewinsky or Amanda Knox or Nile Jarvis or whatever, sometimes we are quick to make assumptions. But when we are forced to look at it from another angle, do we have the humility and the compassion to listen and to revise the narrative?” –Showrunner Howard Gordon

The Beast in Me Series Teaser

The Beast in Me Series Teaser

Since the tragic death of her young son, acclaimed author Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes) has receded from public life, unable to write, a ghost of her former self. She finds an unlikely subject for a new book when the house next door is bought by Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), a famed and formidable real estate mogul who was once the prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance. At once horrified and fascinated by this man, Aggie finds herself compulsively hunting for the truth – chasing his demons while fleeing her own – in a game of cat & mouse that might turn deadly. The Beast in Me is created by writer Gabe Rotter (of “The X-Files”). It’s showrun & co-written by Howard Gordon (of “The X-Files”, “Homeland”, “24”). With writing by Gabe Rotter, Erika Sheffer, C.A. Johnson, Daniel Pearle, Ali Liebegott, Mike Skerrett, & Gordon. With episodes directed by filmmaker Antonio Campos (Afterschool, Simon Killer, Christine, The Devil All the Time, “The Staircase”). Made by 20th Television. Executive produced by Daniel Pearle, Conan O’Brien, Jeff Ross, David Kissinger, Caroline Baron, Jodie Foster, Howard Gordon, Gabe Rotter, Claire Danes, Antonio Campos. Netflix will debut The Beast in Me streaming on Netflix starting November 13th, 2025 this fall.

Margot Robbie is one of Hollywood’s most popular names. Long before starring in the 2023 box office giant Barbie, the Australia native made a name for herself as an actress and producer. It’s been two years since she graced the big screen, and she’s been busy raising her child, whom she welcomed with husband Tom Ackerley in late 2024. So, why do people think she attended the 2025 Emmys? Find out what we know here.

How to Watch the 2025 Emmys Now

The 2025 Emmy Awards are currently streaming on Paramount+ for those who missed the live broadcast.

Was Margot Robbie Nominated for an Emmy in 2025?

No, Margot was not nominated for an Emmy Award because she did not star in nor produce any of the Emmy-nominated TV series. Her latest television show, Sirens, premiered in May 2025, and could potentially be nominated for an Emmy at next year’s awards ceremony.

Was Margot Robbie at the 2025 Emmys?

No, despite some confusion among fans, Margot did not attend the 2025 Emmy Awards. Two days before the ceremony took place in Los Angeles, the Aussie was in London to promote her new film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. The UK premiere was held at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, and she visited BBC Radio One to discuss the new movie. Margot was spotted walking into the radio show in a Chanel outfit.

Why Do People Think Margot Robbie Was at the Emmys?

It’s unclear why quite a few on the internet thought that Margot attended the 2025 Emmys, but since she’s one of the world’s most renowned actors, people likely hoped to get another glamorous sighting of the Barbie star.

After all, Margot made quite the fashion statement on the red carpet at the London premiere of A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. She wore a completely sheer beaded dress.

Has Margot Robbie Ever Won an Emmy?

No — though Margot is one of the most lauded actors in the film business, she has not won an Emmy Award yet. The I, Tonya, star is mostly known for her performances in feature-length films. However, she got her start on the small screen in the Australian soap opera Neighbours, playing the role of Donna Freedman. She then appeared in Pan Am as Laura Cameron.

“What exactly do you do for a living?” He makes movies! Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced that they’re releasing a brand new Blu-ray box set this fall. It’s called the Luc Besson 9-Film Collection, featuring for HD copies of the first 9 movies made by French filmmaker Luc Besson. All nine are on Blu-ray though only 6 of the films are 4K Ultra HD. Many of these are bonafide classics – The Fifth Element is one of my all-time favorites! Though I have to say, after these first nine I think his filmmaking took a downward turn and he hasn’t made anything as incredible on this level again since 2005. The 9-film collection includes Luc Besson’s: Le Dernier Combat, Subway, The Big Blue, La Femme Nikita, Atlantis, Léon: The Professional, The Fifth Element, The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc, and Angel-A. Many of his movies from this era were either sci-fi or fantastical or over-the-top with an action thriller premise. “Be one of the first to bring home this one-of-a-kind gift set honoring the visionary French filmmaker, Luc Besson. Including 9 of his most celebrated works, don’t miss out on this must-own collection.” Sony also cut a trailer feature footage from these 9 movies and you know what – it is an thrilling recap. Take a look below.

The Luc Besson 9-Film Collection

Explore 9 of his films within the limited edition Luc Besson 9-Movie Collection (1983 – 2005). Each film is presented in high def, with six films also presented in full 4K resolution! The nine films in the Luc Besson Collection include Le Dernier Combat (1983), Subway (1985), The Big Blue 🐬 (1988), La Femme Nikita (1990), Atlantis (1991), Léon: The Professional (1994), The Fifth Element (1997), The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), and Angel-A (2005)—with many films making their long-awaited high-def disc debut and including several new 4K restorations! Packaged within a coffee table-worthy sleek outer box that opens to showcase the films inside, the set also includes hours of in-depth looks behind the scenes, new cast and crew interviews and more!” Sony Pictures’ Luc Besson 9-Film Collection Blu-ray box set will be out on November 11th, 2025. Who Are the Youngest Female & Male Emmy Winners in History? – Hollywood Life

The Emmy Awards honor those whose performances and contributions to a television series made a huge impact. From comedies to dramas, the annual awards ceremony unites the TV industry. And now that 15-year-old Owen Cooper just became the youngest male to ever win an Emmy, we’re looking back at who was the youngest female to do the same.

How Long Have the Emmys Been Around?

The first Emmy Award ever handed out was in 1949. Therefore, as of 2025, the Emmys have been a tradition for more than 75 years.

Who Is the Youngest Female Emmy Winner?

Roxana Zal is still the youngest female — and person — to ever win an Emmy. She took home the award in 1984 for her performance in Something About Amelia.

The Malibu, California, native began acting when she was just 11 and went on to appear in the films Table for Five and Testament. From the 1990s to the early 2000s, Roxana appeared in the television shows Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, The Pretender and NCIS. Shortly thereafter, she retired from acting and went into fashion design.

Roxana’s role in Something About Amelia was a tough one for her. During a 1986 interview with the Los Angeles Times, she said it was difficult to separate her performance and reality. In the film, she portrayed a victim of child molestation.

Just because people were wondering-

Roxana Zal is the youngest female winner, and remains the youngest acting winner overall, winning in 1984 for Something About Amelia. She was fourteen at the time! https://t.co/ONOyJUKv37 pic.twitter.com/HdM8EbUkgn

“I found myself going home depressed and drained. I never went to work happy once,” Roxana recalled. “I could never be happy; I always had to be upset.”

However, the then-teenage star pointed out she was “happy that [she] helped people,” recalling the letters that she received from actual victims of child abuse.

“I was happy that I helped people,” she told the publication. “It made me feel so good. Many people wrote to me and said that they might not have gone to get help if it hadn’t been for me.”

Who Is the Youngest Male Emmy Winner?

Owen Cooper became the youngest male to ever take home an Emmy Award in September 2025. He won for his chilling performance in Adolescence.

“When I started these drama classes a couple of years back, I didn’t expect to even be in the United States, never mind here,” Owen began in his speech after calling it a “surreal” experience. “I think tonight proves if you listen, and you focus and you step out your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life.”

The young actor pointed out, “Who cares if you get embarrassed? Anything can be possible.”

“I was nothing about three years ago, [and] I’m here now,” he added, before thanking his family, castmates and the crew behind Adolescence. “It may have my name on this award, but it really belongs to the people behind the camera.”

Owen will appear in the upcoming film adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Venice 2025 Recap – 8 Outstanding Films to Watch From the Festival

by Alex Billington
September 15, 2025

“What I want to test is not so complex…” Each year, I am lucky for the opportunity to return to the splendid city of Venice in Northern Italy to attend the Venice Film Festival and catch the latest films premiering there. This year’s festival was much better than the previous year (my recap of 2024 here) and I’ve listed the 8 best films of the festival below. This was my ninth year returning to Venice, and I’m always glad to be back, no matter how many terrific films I get to see (or bad films I have to sit through anyway). In total, I watched around 30 films at Venice this year, with many of them ending up being pretty good (phew!). The finest films of the fest were two majestically cinematic works of art by female filmmakers: The Testament of Ann Lee and Silent Friend. I would’ve been so happy with either winning the Golden Lion, but instead they ended up giving it to Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother – one of the worst films I have seen all year. Oh well, it happens. Instead, I want to highlight my favorites from Venice 2025. I always do my best to watch as many films as I can, hoping to find any hidden gems and breakout hits amidst the global selection.

As always, I keep my Letterboxd page updated with screenings and comments daily. And I have also been posting thoughts, photos, and more updates on my main Twitter account @firstshowing during the fest. And I’ve been writing reviews for a number of the films, already published over the last few weeks. Digging into the 2025 selection, more deserve to be mentioned here. Straight Circle is a superb debut by director Oscar Hudson with wildly creative filmmaking; Werner Herzog’s Ghost Elephants doc is a compelling tale of scientists & conservation; Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia is a great conversation-starter film; Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice was a let down for me but I’m happy everyone else is loving it; Mark Obenhaus & Laura Poitras’ doc Cover-Up is an awesome tribute to a fearless journalist but doesn’t go far enough (still good though). Finally – The Voice of Hind Rajab is a vitally important story, about how horrible things are in Palestine, but I don’t think the filmmaking is that interesting & it didn’t deserve to win the top prize. I’m always up for chatting about any of the films from the fest, even the ones I didn’t like can be discussed further anytime. There’s so much to talk about with each one. As for the ones I’m raving about — here we go.

Below are my Top 8 films from the 2025 Venice Film Festival; these are the films that I enjoyed the most, or those that I couldn’t stop thinking about, and I hope everyone else gives them a look, too. My favorites:

Silent Friend – Directed by Ildikó Enyedi

Venice - Silent Friend

This is MY Golden Lion winner. The best film of the 2025 Venice Film Festival – hands down. I am still thinking about how breathtaking it was sitting in the Sala Darsena cinema watching this unravel. Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi is back with her first feature film in four years. Silent Friend is a film featuring three intertwined stories all based around a big, humble, magnificent ginkgo tree (hundreds of years old) in the middle of a garden in a university in Germany (it’s all real – this was filmed at Marburg University). The three stories are set at different times throughout the 1900s (and one in 2020 during Covid-19 lockdowns) but they all connect in a fascinating way exploring: are trees & plants sentient? Are they interacting with & observing us the same as we are observing them? Can we study this and prove this with real data? The cast is wonderful, with the highlights being Tony Leung as a researcher working alone on campus; along with students including Luna Wedler, Enzo Brumm, and Marlene Burow. The score by Gábor Keresztes & Kristóf Kelemen is exceptionally powerful & emotional. This is a kind of film that will be discovered & loved by more and more people over time. And they’ll all come to appreciate how remarkable it is and how it really does make you believe that plants are actually as live as we are and capable of communication, too. 🌳

The Testament of Ann Lee – Directed by Mona Fastvold

Venice - The Testament of Ann Lee

I was not expecting to be this AMAZED by this film. Wow is the word. The Testament of Ann Lee comes to Venice hot on the heels of last year’s The Brutalist (my #1 film of Venice 2024) because it involves the same team – co-written again by the husband & wife duo Brady Corbet & Mona Fastvold; it was also shot on film, and also features another all-timer score by Daniel Blumberg, and also tells an epic story from the past. Aside from those details, the films couldn’t be more unlike – though it is still just as brilliant as The Brutalist in many of its own unique ways. It’s a one-of-a-kind musical! The singing, the dancing, the vibes of the whole thing are extraordinary! It’s not really about religion, as many viewers believe, it’s really about a woman figuring out a way to escape the oppressive patriarchy of her time by inventing her own religion. It’s not just about a cult, it’s about a woman inventing and sticking to her dogma in order to envision a better life for her and anyone who wants to join. Amanda Seyfried is phenomenal in this – delivering a glorious best-of-this-decade performance for the ages. Don’t miss this magical cinematic creation! It’s truly stunning.

A House of Dynamite – Directed by Kathryn Bigelow

Venice - A House of Dynamite

Tick, tock… What would you do – what would anyone do – if you learned that there was a nuclear missile on its way towards America and there’s now only 20 minutes until it impacts. And you must decide how to respond. Send more nukes back? They don’t even know who fired it! This extraordinarily tense, sweaty palms film is one of the most thrilling experiences I’ve had at the movies this year. It’s unbearably nerve-wracking watching these three different scenarios and many different people within the US government & military figure out what to do when they discover this missile is on the way. Kathryn Bigelow is back after years with her brand new feature film that elevates the tension from The Hurt Locker to the most extreme levels. This is properly scary cinema. It’s scary thinking about all the implications of this really happening since the attention to detail is exceptional (and it’s not about America – it’s about any country responding to a nuke). It’s also scary watching these various government officials scramble, in good and bad ways, to make careful decisions that might just result in humanity’s annihilation. Seriously incredible. Suspenseful filmmaking firing on all cylinders! A must watch film (and one to discuss endlessly) when it opens this fall.

Human Resource – Directed by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit

Venice - Human Resource

I caught up with this Thai film right at the end of the festival and instantly earned a spot on my Best of the Fest list. Mostly for the filmmaking above all else. Directed by Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit this plays like Thailand’s Ruben Östlund with a dash Roy Andersson. It’s a bleak, melancholic film about how horrible it is to live in the corporate, capitalist system most people are trapped in all over this planet nowadays – following one young Thai woman who works in the HR department. To be honest, it’s hard to recommend because you have to appreciate the extraordinarily dark humor hidden within the bleakness of this film. The director’s decision to let certain shots linger felt so powerful in a “we’re all so screwed” way that might not connect with every viewer. I wrote in my glowing review: “This is clever filmmaking. It’s extremely dark, yet exceptionally sharp, in its perfectly depicted sly criticism of the what-are-we-even-doing-anymore hell we all live in nowadays. I doubt it’ll wake anyone up from the delusions they’re living in. I doubt it’ll suddenly cause the world to stop being so obsessed with capitalism & corporations. But it totally slays anyway.” Yep.

Frankenstein – Directed by Guillermo del Toro

Venice - Frankenstein

Guillermo is back! Retelling the macabre story of Dr. Victor Frankenstein! I loved this movie. I can’t even fully explain why – I was completely swept away in Guillermo del Toro’s storytelling and visuals and sets and over-saturated cinematic style. From the moment it starts, I was locked in. Guillermo re-imagines this classic tale, focusing more on the emotional storytelling, eventually getting to the most endearing part of the film – the scenes where Jacob Elordi as “The Creature”, the creation of Dr. Frankenstein, runs off on his own and “grows up” in the woods where he learns about his life and who he really is. His performance is exceptional, much more complex than a bumbling monster who can barely speak. He’s matched by Oscar Isaac co-starring as Victor, though his story is much different and takes him down other paths (which may not be as engaging for every viewer). I’ll be raving about this movie for a long time. From my full review: “I can’t wait to watch it again… Del Toro’s Frankenstein is a cinematic triumph. It represents his growth as a filmmaker and exemplifies his storytelling prowess. Much like Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpieces, I can sense every storyboard, every decision that led to every single shot working as wonderfully as it does on screen.”

After the Hunt – Directed by Luca Guadagnino

Venice - After the Hunt

Easily the most controversial film at the festival this year. But I don’t know why? I was more shaken up and taken aback by Luca Guadagnino’s After the Hunt than any of the three other Luca Guadagnino movies that played at Venice in the past few years: Suspiria (2018), Bones and All (2022), and Queer (2024). This one is better than those films. Yes, it absolutely is. The negative reviews are being extra harsh because most of them didn’t quite understand the film. It’s exceptionally dense. The screenplay (written by Nora Garrett / not by Guadagnino) is a complex, philosophy-inspired, intellectual breakdown of the #MeToo movement as it relates to universities and campus life. There is a strong point it’s making, it’s not a “whodunit” mystery as advertised, it’s really about denial and how quick everyone is to make assumptions about people. I stated in my full review: it’s “meticulously crafted, entrancing and harrowing to watch” and it “will grow on people with time.” I also wrote an editorial inspired by the misreadings of this film entitled “The Big Question at Venice 2025: Are People Understanding the Films?” because this one really deserves a second look – or even a third – to understand what it’s really saying. I believe Guadagnino is still as terrific of a filmmaker as ever.

Calle Málaga – Directed by Maryam Touzani

Venice - Calle Málaga

This one has been stuck on my mind since the moment it was over. What a beautiful, beautiful film! From acclaimed Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani (also of the very lovely The Blue Caftan from just a few years ago) comes a film set in the city of Tangier, following an elderly Spanish woman named Maria who lives there. She lives in a gorgeous large apartment on a street she knows better than anything. One day her daughter shows up and forces her to sell her home to help with issues back in Spain. But Maria fights back. This is film a bright, beautiful tale of an older woman becoming a badass fighting for her home while uniting her community. Just delightful. Starring beloved Spanish actress Carmen Maura in such a deeply layered, vibrant role as Maria. This should’ve been in the Main Competition at Venice! It’s THAT good. It’s as tender and wholesome and soft as any film can be, while showing how fierce an old woman can be. I was constantly impressed watching with how every moment is handled with such care and authenticity. What a stellar film.

The Tale of Silyan – Directed by Tamara Kotevska

Venice - The Tale of Silyan

One of the best documentaries of 2025! A wonderful, vivid, moving cinematic experience! I am still in awe thinking about the cinematography from this film. How did they get these shots?! How is every single shot so perfect?! Following her Oscar-nominated work on the film Honeyland (from 2019), North Macedonian filmmaker Tamara Kotevska returns with her second feature called The Tale of Silyan. That title is a reference to a fable recited in the film. It’s actually about a farmer family in the European country of North Macedonia as well as the incredible white storks that live in their town. They are everywhere. And they’re such funny creatures! They clap their beaks behind their heads to make noise and communicate. And this remarkable story follows the relationship between an older farmer and a white stork. It’s very touching and uplifting! And unlike so many other eco thriller films recently, this one actually has an invigorating message of hope, a reminder we can return to nature and stop destroying the planet and make things better again. It is possible. Seek out this magnificent doc and watch it on the BIG SCREEN! It’s an unforgettable experience.

Recapping the 2025 Venice Film Festival experience, I would say it was a solid year. Many good films, not as many bad films, much better selection than the previous year (which was a let down). There are at least two or three films that have earned a spot on my all-time favorites list (as mentioned above). Plenty of others I cannot wait for them to open in theaters, for audiences to dig into them and watch them and discuss them. One of the most exciting trends at Venice 2025: women made many of the best films at the fest! So many top notch films made by female filmmakers stood out over all the men this year: The Testament of Ann Lee (dir. Mona Fastvold), Silent Friend (dir. Ildikó Enyedi), 100 Nights of Hero (dir. Julia Jackman), The Voice of Hind Rajab (dir. Kaouther Ben Hania), Cover-Up (co-dir. Laura Poitras), Calle Málaga (dir. Maryam Touzani), The Tale of Silyan (dir. Tamara Kotevska), and Girl (dir. Shu Qi). The only other big question at the festival this year is how they missed getting two major films that played at Telluride & TIFF. Specifically: Hamnet, considering Chloe Zhao already won the Golden Lion back in 2020 for Nomadland; and Rental Family, considering they played The Whale with Brendan Fraser and this would’ve been lovely to share as well. But they can’t show everything! I’m just happy the Venice selection was as exciting and engaging as I was hoping for this year. I’m always ready to discover more cinema each & every year in Venice and beyond.

And that’s all for Venice 2025 (aka #Venezia82), wrapping up our news from the fest. As already covered before, Jim Jarmusch’s film strangely won the Golden Lion award – view the full list of 2025 awards winners here. My coverage is finished now with this list of favorites and final thoughts on the films this year. I’m still looking forward to returning to Venice again in 2026, always an especially invigorating time watching new films there. Ready to discover the latest exciting work from wherever it might be from all around the world.

Joe Burrow’s 2025 season has been dealt a major blow. The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, who has been one of the NFL’s brightest young stars since being drafted first overall in 2020, is now facing surgery following his latest injury. The news has fans across the league concerned about how long the Pro Bowl QB will be sidelined, and what it means for the Bengals’ playoff hopes.

With recovery time still being evaluated, all eyes are on Burrow’s status and his road back to the field. Find out more below.

Who Is Joe Burrow?

Burrow is the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals, taken No. 1 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft out of LSU, where he led the team to a national championship. Known for his poise, accuracy, and leadership, he had a breakout season in 2024, earning NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors and ranking among the league’s top passers before this injury.

What Happened to Joe Burrow?

During Week 2 of the 2025 season, in a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Burrow suffered a left toe injury in the second quarter after being sacked by Arik Armstead. He was helped off the field, seen using crutches and a boot. Backup QB Jake Browning came in and led the Bengals to a 31–27 win, but Burrow did not return.

What Is Joe Burrow’s Injury and Why Does He Need Surgery?

The injury has been diagnosed as a severe case of turf toe with significant ligament damage in the big toe joint, a hyperextension injury that requires surgical intervention. The severity makes rest alone insufficient for full recovery, so Burrow is expected to undergo surgery to repair the damage.

Former New England Patriots safety and three-time Super Bowl champion Devin McCourty, now an analyst for NBC’s Football Night in America, weighed in on Burrow’s situation.

“I think for Joe Burrow, the worst thing that happened to him… is that he’s a Cincinnati Bengal… I hate the way this Bengals organization has built this team,” McCourty said, criticizing the franchise for not doing enough to protect their star QB.

How Long Will Joe Burrow Be Out?

Burrow is expected to be sidelined for at least three months following surgery. That timeline suggests he could miss a large portion of the regular season, with the possibility of a return late in the year (potentially December), depending on recovery.
