It Established South Korea’s Fashion Identity. Now, Wooyoungmi Is Ready for More

It’s a fall evening in Seoul, and a small group of Korean dancers dressed in traditional black and white robes are clanging brass gongs and chanting at the entrance to Wooyoungmi’s sleek new flagship. The crowd follows the procession through the imposing front doors and upstairs to a large space, where, on a table surrounded by pyramids of glossy persimmons, sits an offering of a pig’s head.

As the music crescendos, a line of guests offer up envelopes of money, which they place into the swine’s open mouth before bowing. A common ritual in Korea known as gosa, it is held to cleanse bad vibes and bring good fortune to new ventures. The occasion is timely: this is Wooyoungmi’s first standalone store in Seoul, and the onset of a retail strategy the label is betting on.

South Korea’s first global menswear brand

Youngmi Woo, the brand’s owner and founder, knows that fortune doesn’t come easy. A cool and collected 66-year-old, known in the industry as “Madame Woo”, she glides through the crowd in a sharply tailored black suit and large sunglasses. As CEO of Solid Corporation, which owns Wooyoungmi and its more conservative brother, Solid Homme, she is in charge of one of South Korea’s most powerful fashion houses.

Founded in 1998 as Korea’s first designer menswear brand, Solid Homme paved the way for Wooyoungmi, which launched in 2002 and became the first Korean label to show at Paris Fashion Week. The brand operates two stores in Paris, is sold across 24 countries with 70 stockists, and employs 150 people globally. In 2024, Solid Corporation reported revenues of €72 million, and sales for Wooyoungmi have shown steady annual growth of approximately 10% to 20% over the past few years.

Located in Itaewon, formerly home to US army barracks and now a cosmopolitan enclave, the new store’s location is part of a wider retail strategy to assert influence at home. “During the pandemic, I realized the need to have a place where you can physically and directly engage with the customers,” Madame Woo says, speaking from her expansive office in Gangnam. While Wooyoungmi shares space with Solid Homme at the aforementioned Seoul store, this is the first time the label (which also sells womenswear) will be merchandised alone in Seoul. Madame Woo sees it as an opportunity for the brand to shore up its identity there.

I Went Halves on My Engagement Ring—And It Felt Completely Romantic

Last weekend, my partner and I got engaged. (Eek! Yay! Champagne bottle emoji!) Getting engaged is something we’ve been talking about doing for a while—yes, I knew it was coming. And I’m glad I did, because it meant I could book a manicure and plan my ‘fit. It also meant I could help choose the ring. We settled on a truly stunning (IMO) vintage emerald and diamond ring from Rock N’ Rose. And when it came to making the purchase, it seemed only natural that we would split the bill.

When I tell people that my partner and I decided to go halves on my engagement ring, it tends to elicit a wide range of responses: a raised, suspicious eyebrow. An “Oh, that’s… interesting.” Maybe even a thinly veiled look of pity.

It’s not that I expect absolutely everyone to go halvsies. Obviously, many women may not want to—and that’s fine! But I’m always a little surprised by these reactions. I had assumed that splitting the cost of the ring was something a lot of us modern women might be doing. It felt fair, feminist; a symbol of our partnership rather than a reminder of some kind of outdated gendered imbalance.

After all, things have moved on quite a lot when it comes to equality in male-female romantic relationships in the UK. For one thing, it has become the norm for both men and women to work. Research from ClearScore suggests that most couples are making an effort to contribute equally when it comes to finances: 40% of couples split their bills proportionately to income, while 51% split everything 50/50. Admittedly, there is still a long way to go when it comes to the division of labour, with women reportedly doing 36 hours of household tasks per week, while men do an average of 25. Nevertheless, this is an improvement on the zero hours that (many) men were doing 50 years ago.

However, despite this general push to make heterosexual coupledom more equal, surprisingly few couples make the same decision to go halves when it comes to the engagement ring. According to a 2023 study, 94% of partners who did the proposing paid for the engagement ring in full, and only 2% of couples reportedly decided to split the cost of the ring.

Then again, the more I think about it, these stats kind of check out. My algorithm (which has cottoned on to the fact that I’m getting engaged) is filled with a surprising number of young women who seem to believe pretty fervently that the ring should be something that the man and only the man pays for. And, even more strange, the general line of thinking seems to be: the bigger the ring he can buy, the better the man.

The Best Red Pumps to Buy If You’re Tired of Black Heels

I think we’ve been lied to about simple black pumps. Yes, they’re a classic. Yes, they’ll never go out of style. But they aren’t the only thing you can wear if you want to elevate an outfit. Actually, I think sometimes a black heel can make things look a little too serious and buttoned up.

Recently, I’ve been trying to expand my heel collection, as I actually don’t own that many. They intimidate me! But I’ve been really drawn to red pumps. I love how dramatic a pop of red is. It’s a sexy color that instantly adds oomph, especially if you’re wearing something simple but want it to feel right for a night out.

And Lily-Rose Depp has been innovating in the red-pump space for years now. Honestly, she’s the person who first put me on to the look. Depp often opts for a red ballet pump from the French brand Repetto, and it looks incredible with her standard uniform of dainty white dresses and white T-shirts with jeans. Move over, red lipstick; this is the only way I’m adding a pop of red to my outfits from here on out.
