Terence Stamp, U.K. actor who played General Zod in early Superman films, dies at 87 – National

by jummy84 August 20, 2025
written by jummy84

Terence Stamp, the British actor who often played the role of a complex villain, including that of General Zod in the early Superman films, has died. He was 87.

His death on Sunday was disclosed in a death notice published online, prompting a wave of tributes from and an array of fans and those close to him within the industry, including the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, or BAFTA.

The London-born Stamp started his film career with 1962’s seafaring Billy Budd, for which he earned Oscar and BAFTA award nominations.

His six decades in the business were peppered with highlights, including his touching portrayal of the trans Bernadette in 1994’s The Adventure of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the second of his two BAFTA nominations.

But it will be his portrayal of the bearded Zod in 1978’s Superman and its sequel Superman II two years later that most people associate with Stamp. As the Kryptonian arch enemy to Christopher Reeve’s Man of Steel, Stamp introduced a darker, charming and vulnerable — more human — element to the franchise, one that’s been replicated in countless superhero movies ever since.

Edgar Wright, who directed Stamp in his final feature film, 2021’s Last Night in Soho, remembered the actor in an Instagram post as “kind, funny, and endlessly fascinating.”

“The closer the camera moved, the more hypnotic his presence became. In close-up, his unblinking gaze locked in so powerfully that the effect was extraordinary. Terence was a true movie star: the camera loved him, and he loved it right back,” Wright said.

Bill Duke, who starred with Stamp in director Steven Soderbergh’s 1999 crime drama The Limey, said he was “deeply saddened” to hear of his death.

“He brought a rare intensity to the screen, but off-screen he carried himself with warmth, grace, and generosity,” he said on Facebook.

Stamp started his acting career on stage in the late 1950s, where he acted in repertory theatre and met Michael Caine, who was five years older than himself. The pair lived together in a flat in central London while looking for their big break.

He got his break with Billy Budd and Stamp embarked on a career that would see him in the early 1960s be part of the “angry young men” movement that was introducing an element of social realism into British moviemaking.

That was perhaps most notable in the 1965 adaptation of John Fowles’ creepy debut novel The Collector, where he played the awkward and lonely Freddie Clegg, who kidnapped Samantha Eggar’s Miranda Grey in a warped attempt to win her love. It was a performance that would earn the young Stamp, fresh off his Oscar nomination, the best actor award at that year’s Cannes Film Festival.

While part of that 1960s British movement, Stamp learned from some of the most seasoned actors from the classical era, including Laurence Olivier.

“I worked with Olivier briefly on my second movie (1962’s Term of Trial),” Stamp recalled in an interview with the AP in 2013. “And he said to me, ‘You should always study your voice.’” Stamp then segued into a spot-on Olivier impersonation, continuing, “‘Because, as you get older, your looks go, but your voice will become empowered.’”

His career took a bit of a hiatus from the late 1960s after he missed out on the role of James Bond to replace Sean Connery, that included a years-long stint in India and which saw him embrace a more holistic approach to his self.

It was the unexpected role of General Zod that brought him back to the limelight. He played John Tunstall in 1988’s Young Guns, the Galactic Republic leader in 1999’s Star Wars prequel The Phantom Menace, appeared in the comedies Yes Man and Get Smart in 2008 and delivered voice performances in the video games Halo 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Born in London’s East End on July 22, 1938, Stamp lived a colourful life, particularly during the 1960s when he had a string of romances, including with actress Julie Christie and model Jean Shrimpton. He married 29-year-old Elizabeth O’Rourke in 2002 at the age of 64 but the couple divorced six years later. Stamp did not have any children.

Stamp retained his looks as the years ticked by, his natural handsomeness hardened by a more grizzled look.

He generally sought to keep his standards high — to a point.

“I don’t do crappy movies, unless I haven’t got the rent,” he said.

Paul Walter Hauser feels 'alone' in Hollywood

Paul Walter Hauser feels ‘alone’ in Hollywood

by jummy84 August 20, 2025

20 August 2025

Paul Walter Hauser feels “very alone” in Hollywood.

Paul Walter Hauser feels more at home in wrestling than Hollywood

The 38-year-old actor – who is also a professional wrestler – has opened up about the different sides to his personality, and how it has positioned him as something of an outsider among other celebrities, whereas he feels more at home around his colleagues in the wrestling world.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’m a way better actor than I am a wrestler, but I just… I don’t know, when I walk into a wrestling arena and there’s a bunch of nerdy fans with signs and autograph stuff, and I feel like one of them.

“Whereas, when I’m at a Hollywood function or a premiere, it feels like that awkward high school thing [where] there’s a bunch of pretty people who are saying all the right things, and I’m the only one who wants to truly be some sort of unleashed version of themselves, and I feel very alone in that for some reason.”

Paul pointed out that his life choices and beliefs are at the root of his feelings

He added: “I’m an outspoken Jesus guy, but I also can’t stand Donald Trump.

“I no longer live in LA. I am obsessed with professional wrestling, and I’ve made somewhat of a career out of that.

“In a weird way, I almost feel like I fit in the wrestling world more than I do in Hollywood.”

The Fantastic Four: First Steps star explained how those feelings of otherness inspire his creative choices as she makes sure to only pick worthwhile projects.

He said: “There’s so much I haven’t done that I want to do desperately. Kevin Costner offered me a part in Horizon, but it was one line of dialogue and the character had nothing to them. “I don’t need to be a piece of furniture in anybody’s movie. I love Kevin Costner, and I want to work with him, and it’d be an honor, but I also want to do something good.

“The same thing with Luca Guadagnino, [who] offered me [a role] to play the tennis judge during the big matches in Challengers.”

While the latter was also tempting, he compared the role and his ambitions to being “too hungry to eat garnish and pretend it’s a meal”.

He argued: “I would rather hold out for the right thing.

“On the day I’m just going to be all hungry, and then I’m going to look stupid and then I’m going to feel awkward. In Hollywood, I don’t feel like I fit in at all.”

After which, she continued, “‘Mommy was in jail for a long time, and she was very sad. But then one day, Mommy proved that she was innocent and she got to go home, and then she met your daddy and had you and happily ever after.'”

Mo’Nique Slams Tyler Perry For Destroying Her Career + Claims ‘You Cost My Family Millions’ & Demands Public Apology

Mo’Nique is doubling down on her long-running feud with Tyler Perry, calling him out for what she says was a career-damaging falsehood.

Speaking on “Outlaws with TS Madison,” the Oscar-winning actress alleged Perry told “a lie” that derailed her livelihood. “And that lie cost me 12 years of my career,” she said.

Referring to Perry as “one of the biggest entertainers in the world,” Mo’Nique emphasized the emotional and financial toll his actions had on her.

“Tyler Perry, you cost my family millions and millions and millions of dollars,” she declared. “Until he fixes it, I will not stop.”

She called for Perry to publicly acknowledge his role, citing how he allegedly admitted during a private phone call that he regretted how he treated her.

“You publicly shamed me. So now you have to publicly fix it,” Mo’Nique insisted.

She also compared his behavior to that of Harvey Weinstein, accusing Perry of having a “God complex.”

If you recall, Mo has long accused Tyler or labeling her difficult to work with, leading to missed career opportunities.

Do you think these two will ever make amends?

The Evolution of Sunglasses in Pop Culture – Hollywood Life

by jummy84 August 20, 2025
written by jummy84

In a world where fashion trends come and go, certain accessories transcend time, becoming symbols of style, status, and cultural identity. Sunglasses, particularly iconic brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley, have evolved from mere functional items to powerful fashion statements. Over the years, sunglasses have become more than just a tool for shielding your eyes from the sun, they are now an integral part of how we express ourselves, our lifestyle, and our values.

For those looking to add a touch of timeless style to their look, you can shop Ray Ban sunglasses at Jomashop.com, a brand synonymous with classic design and cultural influence.

The Rise of Sunglasses in Pop Culture

The journey of sunglasses from practical eye protection to cultural icons began in the early 20th century. Initially, sunglasses were primarily designed for practical purposes, protecting the eyes from harsh sunlight and dust. But by the mid-20th century, they began to transcend their functional role, becoming a hallmark of style and a symbol of cool. The shift began with the rise of Hollywood, where stars like Audrey Hepburn and James Dean wore sunglasses not only to protect their eyes but also to shield their identity from the prying public. This marked the beginning of sunglasses being seen as more than just an accessory, they became a part of the persona of the stars.

As cinema evolved, so did the role of sunglasses in storytelling. In the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, Tom Cruise’s character, Maverick, sported Ray-Ban Aviators, making them synonymous with cool, rebellious energy. This product placement was one of the first of its kind to elevate a pair of sunglasses into a cultural phenomenon. The success of the film led to a surge in Ray-Ban sales, with the brand reporting a 40% increase in 1986 alone.

Sunglasses, especially from brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley, became synonymous with rebellion, individuality, and effortless cool. They were no longer just fashion accessories, they were markers of identity and resistance to societal norms.

Sunglasses as Symbols of Identity

Sunglasses, over the years, have become much more than just a fashion statement, they are a reflection of personal identity. What you wear can reveal a lot about who you are, and sunglasses have been one of the most accessible ways for individuals to express their personality, values, and lifestyle. This is especially true for celebrity culture, where sunglasses have often served as a tool to craft and enhance an image.

For example, in the 1960s and 1970s, Ray-Ban’s Wayfarers became an emblem of the counterculture movement, reflecting an era of rebellion and freedom. Musicians like Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and many others in the rock and roll scene embraced Ray-Ban’s iconic styles, giving the brand its reputation for being the choice of creative and rebellious minds. Similarly, Oakley sunglasses gained popularity in the 1980s due to their association with athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. Their functional design and distinct aesthetic made them the go-to choice for those who valued performance as much as style.

Sunglasses have also become symbols of success and achievement, particularly in cultures where material items are often linked to personal milestones. A watch, a car, and yes, sunglasses, have long been the symbols that define a certain level of success and the pride that comes with it. Whether it’s a gift from a loved one or a personal purchase to mark a significant achievement, sunglasses are more than just accessories, they are reflective of personal growth and the stories we carry with us.

If you’re looking for a bold, reliable pair of sunglasses that speak to both function and fashion, buy Oakley sunglasses at Jomashop.com to find an array of styles that blend performance and cutting-edge design.

The Intersection of Fashion and Function

What makes sunglasses so unique is their ability to merge both function and fashion. Unlike many fashion accessories, sunglasses have a clear utilitarian purpose: protecting the eyes from the sun’s harmful UV rays. However, over the years, their role has shifted from simply being a functional item to becoming a crucial element of personal style.

Ray-Ban and Oakley are two brands that have skillfully combined both aspects, offering eyewear that is not only stylish but also built to last. The Oakley brand, for example, is known for its innovative materials and cutting-edge design, making it a favorite among athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. Their sunglasses are designed to withstand the harshest elements while ensuring superior comfort and performance.

Ray-Ban, on the other hand, has perfected the art of timeless design, with its signature aviators, Wayfarers, and round frames that have never gone out of style. Their designs have endured decades of trends, remaining as relevant today as they were when they first became iconic.

Sunglasses are no longer just a practical item but a statement piece, one that blends technology, fashion, and functionality seamlessly.

Celebrity Endorsements and Cultural Impact

The relationship between celebrities and sunglasses cannot be understated. Celebrities have always played a pivotal role in shaping fashion trends, and sunglasses are no exception. From Audrey Hepburn’s classic look in Breakfast at Tiffany’s to Brad Pitt’s sunglasses in Fight Club, sunglasses have often been part of the iconic image that these stars project.

In recent years, celebrities like Rihanna, Julia Fox, and Beyoncé have all been seen sporting oversized sunglasses, vintage styles, and unique frames, further pushing the boundaries of what sunglasses can represent. These stars influence fashion and make sunglasses not just a practical item but a cultural statement. For example, Julia Fox recently made waves by pairing oversized Oakley sunglasses with her fashion-forward looks, further cementing the brand’s place in contemporary style.

Such endorsements have helped shape the public’s perception of sunglasses as more than just a way to protect your eyes. They are a way to express confidence, creativity, and a strong sense of individuality. Sunglasses, especially from brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley, have become integral parts of a celebrity’s overall style.

The Future of Sunglasses in Pop Culture

As we move further into the digital age, sunglasses continue to evolve, both in style and function. The next wave of sunglasses is not only focused on style but also integrates smart technology, providing users with enhanced functionality. For example, augmented reality (AR) glasses and smart eyewear are becoming increasingly popular, allowing people to access information while still being stylish.

Brands like Oakley are at the forefront of this innovation, collaborating with tech companies to develop eyewear that blends seamlessly with our digital lives. As the lines between fashion and technology continue to blur, sunglasses are likely to remain a central part of our cultural identity, influencing how we see the world and how we are seen by others.

Additionally, as sustainability becomes an ever-growing concern in the fashion industry, the next generation of sunglasses will likely see an increased focus on eco-friendly materials and practices. Consumers are now more conscious of the environmental impact of their purchases, and sunglasses brands will need to adapt to this shift by offering more sustainable options without sacrificing style.

From their humble beginnings as practical eye protection to their iconic status as cultural symbols, sunglasses have undergone a remarkable transformation. Today, brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley not only define what’s cool but have also shaped pop culture and style. Whether you are drawn to the classic look of Ray-Ban or the performance-oriented style of Oakley, sunglasses remain a powerful accessory that speaks to personal identity and cultural pride.

For more insights into the cultural history and impact of sunglasses, explore this comprehensive timeline provided by Google Arts & Culture: The Evolution of Sunglasses. Matthew Perry death: ‘Ketamine Queen’ to plead guilty to selling fatal dose – National

by jummy84 August 20, 2025
written by jummy84

A woman known as the “Ketamine Queen,” charged with selling Matthew Perry the drug that killed him, agreed to plead guilty Monday.

Jasveen Sangha becomes the fifth and final defendant charged in the overdose death of the Friends star to strike a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. Having initially pleaded not guilty, her change of plea means she’ll avoid a trial that had been planned for August.

Prosecutors had cast Sangha as a prolific drug dealer who was known to her customers as the “Ketamine Queen,” using the term often in press releases and court documents and even including it in the official name of the case.

A federal indictment charged Sangha with one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine, one count of maintaining a drug-involved premises, one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, one count of possession with intent to distribute ketamine and five counts of distribution of ketamine.

Sangha will officially change her plea to guilty at an upcoming hearing, where sentencing will be scheduled, prosecutors said. She could get up to 45 years in prison. An email sent to Sangha’s lawyers seeking comment was not immediately answered.

She and Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who signed his own plea deal June 16, had been the primary targets of the investigation. Three other defendants — Dr. Mark Chavez, Kenneth Iwamasa and Erik Fleming — agreed to plead guilty last year in exchange for their cooperation, which included statements implicating Sangha and Plasencia.

Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles home by Iwamasa, his assistant, on Oct. 28, 2023. The medical examiner ruled that ketamine, typically used as a surgical anesthetic, was the primary cause of death.

The actor had been using the drug through his regular doctor as a legal, but off-label, treatment for depression, which has become increasingly common. Perry, 54, sought more ketamine than his doctor would give him. He began getting it from Plasencia about a month before his death, then started getting still more from Sangha about two weeks before his death, prosecutors said.

Perry and Iwamasa found Sangha through Perry’s friend Fleming. In their plea agreements, both men described the subsequent deals in detail.

Fleming messaged Iwamasa saying Sangha’s ketamine was “unmarked but it’s amazing,” according to court documents. Fleming texted Iwamasa that she only deals “with high end and celebs. If it were not great stuff she’d lose her business.”

With the two men acting as middlemen, Perry bought large amounts of ketamine from Sangha, including 25 vials for $6,000 in cash four days before his death. That purchase included the doses that killed Perry, prosecutors said.

On the day of Perry’s death, Sangha told Fleming they should delete all the messages they had sent each other, according to her indictment.

Her home in North Hollywood, California, was raided in March 2024 by Drug Enforcement Administration agents who found large amounts of methamphetamines and ketamine, according to an affidavit from an agent. She was indicted that June, arrested that August and has been held in jail since.

None of the defendants have yet been sentenced.

Perry struggled with addiction for years, dating back to his time on Friends, when he became one of the biggest stars of his generation as Chandler Bing. He starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004 on NBC’s mega-hit series.

Aubrey Plaza describes grief as ‘a giant ocean of awfulness’ following suicide of husband Jeff Baena

by jummy84 August 20, 2025

20 August 2025

Aubrey Plaza has described her grief as “a giant ocean of awfulness” following the death of her estranged husband, Jeff Baena.

Jeff Baena died by suicide in January and every day has been a ‘struggle’ since for his estranged wife Aubrey Plaza

The screenwriter and director took his own life on January 3, aged 47, with his body discovered at his home in Los Angeles, California, by his dog walker.

Plaza – who had separated from Baena in September 2024 – admits every day is a “struggle” as she continues to mourn the painful loss seven months on.

Asked how she is doing by her Parks and Recreation co-star Amy Poehler on her Good Hang podcast, she said: “Right in this very, very present moment, I feel happy to be with you. Overall, I’m here and I’m functioning. I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think I’m okay, but it’s like a daily struggle, obviously.”

She continued: “This is a really dumb analogy and it was kind of a joke at a certain point, but I actually mean it. Did you see that movie The Gorge? It’s like [an] alien movie or something with Miles Teller. In the movie, there’s like a cliff on one side and there’s a cliff on the other side, then there’s gorge in between and it’s filled with all these like monster people that are trying to get them.

“I swear when I watched it, I was like that feels like what my grief is like … or what grief could be like.

“At all times there’s like a giant ocean of awfulness, that’s like right there and I can see it. Sometimes I just want to dive into it, and just like be in it. Then sometimes I just look at it, and sometimes I try to get away from it. But, it’s always there.”

Breaking her silence on his death three days later, Plaza had said in a statement given to People: “This is an unimaginable tragedy.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support.

“Please respect our privacy during this time.”

Inside The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox and More True Crime TV Dramas

However, Knox says the Hulu show goes beyond the final verdict.

“This series is not just a courtroom drama that ends when Amanda Knox gets out of prison,” the 38-year-old explained to The Hollywood Reporter in an Aug. 18 video. “That’s typically how you see these stories told. This story is really anchored in the long consequences of the trauma that happened in the courtroom and how a person rebuilds their life and rebuilds their faith in humanity by taking risks. There’s a story of me, Amanda, taking a big risk to have faith and trust in people again and the benefits of that and the costs of that.”

Teaming up with Monica Lewinsky—another public figure quite familiar with being at the center of a media storm—Knox was eager to share that piece of her journey.

“That’s why it’s so important to show the afterwards,” she added. “Once you’ve been labeled and diminished and buried as a human being, how do you emerge as a person who is more complex and has more value than what society gave you credit for?”

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox premieres on Hulu Aug. 20. However, it’s hardly the first true crime case to inspire a based-on-real-events story. Check out the other IRL dramas that became must-see TV.
