Moments when Hollywood felt like a real-life casino floor – Hollywood Life

Casinos can be magnetic. The noise, the lights, the rush of playing for high stakes all go into creating a powerful, dreamy atmosphere. You see it over and over in movies: Hollywood produces hundreds of movies every year, many of them featuring casinos.

The sets go from bustling to deserted as the actors walk in, but the scenes are all familiar; for a while, you forget you’re watching a movie. You find yourself in there with them, sweating over chips and a possible win.

Casino Royale and learning how to play

The first thing audiences learned when Daniel Craig took a seat at a high-stakes poker table in Casino Royale wasn’t the importance of chomping on a toothpick during a hand – it was that Daniel Craig could really play poker. Every moment in those scenes had a sharp focus: the lights on the faces of players, the sound of a hand of cards being shuffled, the subtlety of Craig’s own performance.

It was a lesson on what being in that room might really feel like. The bets, the sweating, the watching and waiting – it was all there, a sort of secret movie trivia, revealing how Hollywood got it so right.

It’s popular for the same reason that live casinos are often some of the most popular establishments on review sites like AskGamblers – being able to truly immerse yourself in the casino environment, whether that be in real-life, in a game or in a movie, is something that many people crave.

Ocean’s Eleven and glamour on display

The casinos in the Ocean’s Eleven remake were built to make you want to be there. They didn’t just show audiences gambling on slot machines and blackjack tables: they showed the ins and outs, the best places to sit, the people who could play and those who were only in it for the pretty lights.

Steven Soderbergh staged each shot with a sense of style that could make the average viewer feel like they could be in the middle of that scene, dealing cards and watching stacks of chips multiply. It’s a feeling of rushing from one table to the next, of knowing a high-roller’s bluff, of smiling at security guards and walking out the door.

Rounders and the heartbeat of the game

Casino movies aren’t all big, flashy moments. Sometimes, the most important actions are small and urgent – the sound of breathing a little too loudly, the stakes seeming to rest in the flick of one card. Rounders made underground poker feel like the action was happening in every moment, like the outcome of one hand could shape everything.

Matt Damon and John Malkovich were quiet, controlled (or uncontrolled) in the head-to-head of their underground poker game. The camera focused closely on their faces, on the hands moving stacks of chips, on the creaking leather of a player shifting in their chair.

Rain Man and the nuances of risk

It’s one of the most memorable casino scenes in any movie, but it’s not about risk at all. Rain Man doesn’t follow the high rollers, the shell games or the casino dealers. It follows Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman, who, when they make their way onto the blackjack floor, do so with a calm confidence.

The scene has a stillness and quiet that is only amplified by the dealers and other players at the tables not seeming to want to watch, while also knowing they have to. The game is moving along in clinical efficiency, but even while you know the odds, you know that risk is here, too.

Uncut Gems and edge-of-your-seat gambling

Uncut Gems, from brothers Josh and Benny Safdie, only visits a casino for a short time, but it really nails it. Adam Sandler’s Howard Ratner was on the edge of everything in the movie, which extended to his gambling scenes in a house casino. Shots are tight, edges blurred by the noise of overlapping phone calls and conversations, and the game unfolds at an unstoppable pace.

It feels almost desperate, a way of punctuating the film’s themes. Gambling can be glamorous, but it can be raw and ugly too, too close to destruction for comfort.

It’s about the feel, and less about the shine

What these Hollywood casino scenes have in common is that they don’t just recreate what casinos look like; they also capture what they feel like. Movies evoke those same jangled nerves, that frenetic overload, those impossible decisions, but in scenes surrounding more than just a game.

They have stakes, and their characters have faces, histories, dreams and failures that take a seat at the blackjack table, right alongside the chips they’re playing with. They draw you in, because in that moment, it could be you in that seat, with everything on the line, not knowing how the next hand will be dealt.

All in on the drama

Gambling in a casino is already a bit cinematic, and Hollywood knows it. The high rollers, the villains, the jingles and the flashing lights – gambling scenes in movies can be both fantasy and authentic, each a bet the audience has made, in different ways. For every edge-of-your-seat scene that has viewers biting their nails, there are dozens of others meant to dazzle and distract.

The best of them make the latter feel like the former, holding the attention of the room and the audience as everything in the story hinges on the outcome of a game.

Guillermo del Toro insists his version of Frankenstein is not a warning about AI

Guillermo del Toro insists his forthcoming film Frankenstein is not a warning about artificial intelligence.

Guillermo del Toro insists his forthcoming film Frankenstein is not a warning about artificial intelligence

The 60-year-old director – whose earlier work The Shape of Water won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2017 – addressed questions about AI at the film’s official press conference on Saturday (30.08.25) afternoon ahead of its world premiere, when his $120 million monster movie, starring Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac will debut in competition for the festival’s top prize.

Revealing his new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel is about humanity, imperfection and power rather than technology, Guillermo said: “It’s not intended as a metaphor for that (the dangers of AI.)

“We live in a time of terror and intimidation, certainly.

“And there’s no more urgent task than to remain, in a time where everything is pushing towards a bipolar understanding of our humanity.

“The movie tries to show imperfect characters and the right we have to remain imperfect, and the right we have to understand each other under the most oppressive circumstances.”

He added with a smile: “I’m not afraid of artificial intelligence. I’m afraid of natural stupidity.”

In the new version of Frankenstein, Jacob plays the creature locked in conflict with his creator Victor Frankenstein, played by Oscar.

Guillermo added he imagined the film not as a conventional horror story but as a layered family drama. He said: “I’ve been following the creature since I was a kid.

“I waited for the movie to be done in the right conditions, both creatively in terms of achieving the scope to make it different, and to make it at a scale that you could reconstruct the whole world. I’m in postpartum depression now that it’s finished.”

Jacob was asked at the same event who in society he views as monstrous.

He answered: “Men in suits.”

Guillermo interjected: “Very well tailored (suits.)”

Oscar was also at the event and recalled his first conversations with Guillermo about taking the role of Victor.

He said: “I can’t believe that I’m here right now. I can’t believe we got to this place from two years ago, sitting at (Guillermo’s) table eating Cuban pork and talking about our fathers and our lives, to him saying, ‘I want you to be Victor,’ then not really being sure if it was true or if I was just dreaming. It just seemed like such a pinnacle.”

Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber are taking their romance courtside.

Indeed, the couple stepped out for a PDA-packed outing at The League X Blem basketball tournament event, which the Grammy winner cohosted, in Los Angeles.

In photos from the Aug. 28 event, the two—who tied the knot in September 2018—could be seen enjoying the action from the sidelines while cuddling up and sipping on some drinks. They were even spotted sharing a few kisses during the big game.

For the occasion, the Rhode Beauty founder donned a white T-shirt, black leather jacket, wide-legged jeans, black flip-flops and a pair of chic oval glasses. Meanwhile, the “Daisies” singer sported a blue Skylrk jersey with a white tank underneath, red pants with black stripes and a striped beanie.

Justin and Hailey’s latest outing comes one week after they celebrated their son Jack Blues Bieber’s first birthday.

Alongside a few heartwarming photos of her and her baby boy shared to Instagram Aug. 22, Hailey wrote, “1 year of you my beautiful boy. Happy 1st Birthday Jack Blues, you are joy personified.”

bitchy | People: ‘With Love, Meghan’ is better when Duchess Meghan is in student-mode

by jummy84 August 30, 2025
written by jummy84

The British media’s predictable hate-fest for With Love, Meghan hasn’t really hit this time around. Neither did that one dumb Hollywood Reporter “review.” The people “critiquing” WLM are not watching or writing about WLM in good faith, and in the British media’s case, they’ve had a vested interest in screaming, crying and throwing up about Meghan for the past eight years. That’s their whole business model. I think we, as fans, push back as much as we can and we obviously all enjoy WLM. I do think there’s room to make a few critiques in good faith though. Not even critiques, just suggestions about what parts of WLM work better than others, and our hopes for a few smaller changes if and when there’s a season 3, 4, 5, etc. People Mag actually noted something I mentioned in the first season, which is that WLM is better when Meghan is learning a new skill or learning how to cook something she’s never cooked before. I agree!!

What makes With Love, Meghan season 2 work? For me, it’s simple: Meghan Markle is in student mode.

In the latest offering from her Netflix series, the Duchess of Sussex, 44, signs up not as the expert, but as the learner — the sous chef, the assistant, the one rolling up her sleeves and saying, teach me your ways. We saw glimpses of this last season, when Chef Roy Choi showed her how to fry chicken, or farm-to-table pioneer Alice Waters guided her through washing lettuce. But this time, it’s the throughline of the series, and it helps elevate the show.

My favorite moments are the ones where you can practically see the A+ flash across her face when an expert approves of something she’s made. A green juice they liked, a piece of sourdough that impressed them — she boldly cooked and baked for masters in their craft, and they loved it. There’s an eagerness to meet her guests where they are, to make them feel seen. Just watch Samin Nosrat, author of Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, react to Meghan making her lavashak, a traditional Iranian fruit leather: “No one has ever made this for me other than my grandmother…Thank you.” You can feel Meghan’s pride.

It’s striking to someone who once occupied the world’s largest stage to light up simply because she nailed the butter or nailed the bread.

[From People]

This is absolutely true, and I think it’s because in those episodes, Meghan is standing in for the audience and we’re all learning how to cook a vegan curry or a bread salad or Korean chicken wings. It feels like we’re learning something together. That being said, I love the cutaways of Meghan cooking or crafting something by herself and explaining in a simple way what she’s doing. That is better than Meghan teaching someone how to do something, honestly. The “Meghan as student” episodes also work because she’s not starting at zero – she’s a home cook with a lot of experience, and so the cooking lessons don’t feel dumbed-down. It feels like she’s a sous chef to someone more experienced. Those are my favorite episodes – the ones with Roy Choi, Samin Nosrat, Ramon Velazquez, Jay Shetty and Radhi Devlukia, and especially the Clare Smyth episode.

Dad Talks Viral Arrest & Shares Message From Rapper

by jummy84 August 30, 2025
written by jummy84

Lil Nas X has been riding that ‘Old Town Road’ for years. From taking the world by storm to breaking records left and right. But now, his dad, Robert Stafford, is opening up about his son’s recent headline-making moment, making us wonder: after all the fame and the wild ride, can he keep riding, or is it time for a new path? Now, his father wants to clear the air and set the record straight.

Lil Nas X’s Dad Opens Up About His Son’s Arrest

Now, his father, Robert Stafford, is speaking out — and he’s opening up on his son’s “breakdown.” In an interview with The Times, Stafford painted a heartbreaking picture of a young star buckling under the weight of fame, personal trauma, and family pressure. “That’s not even him,” Stafford said after watching the viral footage.

“I went to visit him in jail and as soon as I walked through that door, I couldn’t do anything but cry,” Stafford revealed. “To see my baby boy on the other side of that glass. We shed tears with each other for a minute. And, I had to tell him that ‘what you’re going through is normal’.” He also told the rapper, “We all have breakdowns every now and then, but the difference is, yours get played out in the public eye.”

What Does His Father Really Think Is Going On?

Stafford also revealed the emotional toll of watching his son struggle to care for a mother battling addiction. In 2021, Hill’s mom was seen begging for food in Atlanta — a moment that went viral and clearly hit home. Despite Hill’s attempts to help, Stafford says she’s resisted rehab, and that pain still haunts him. “That can weigh heavily on your heart,” he said. And, while the world may have judged the arrest clip quickly, his father reminds us that being famous means even your darkest moments get turned into spectacle.

“For a 26-year-old to have to deal with what he’s dealing with — to be a breadwinner for a lot of people, the inability to change his mother’s situation and the pressure he puts on himself,” Stafford said of what Lil Nas X may be facing internally.

Why Exactly Is Lil Nas X Making Headlines?

Montero Hill, better known to the world as Lil Nas X, was once crowned the future of pop after the record-breaking success of ‘Old Town Road.’ But recently, the 26-year-old was arrested in Los Angeles after being found wandering the streets almost naked — just underwear and cowboy boots. And, he was reportedly in distress. Authorities say he injured a police officer during the encounter. Furthermore, he was hospitalized for a suspected overdose shortly after the incident.

Hill now faces three felony battery charges and one felony count of resisting an officer, with a possible sentence of up to five years if convicted. He’s currently out on a $75,000 bond and ordered to attend drug treatment.

“When I went to visit, he asked me to say, ‘Tell everybody I’m sorry they saw me like that.’ Even in that moment, he was apologizing to people for something he was going through,” his father said.

Coco Gauff has already achieved what most athletes only dream of—and she’s still just getting started. At only 21 years old, the tennis phenom has climbed the ranks to become one of the sport’s brightest stars, all while keeping a grounded perspective. “Sometimes my dad will say, ‘You can afford to treat yourself.’ But I come from a middle-class family, so even the necessary things, like flights and hotel rooms, still seem a lot to me,” she told The Guardian in an interview ahead of the 2023 Wimbledon tournament.

Since making headlines as a teen sensation at Wimbledon, Gauff has continued to deliver on the court, winning her first Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open and earning praise from tennis legends like Chris Evert, who predicted, “She’s going to win a Grand Slam… it’s going to happen for her eventually.”

That prediction has already come true—and now, Coco shows no signs of slowing down. Here’s what to know about the champion reshaping the future of tennis below.

Coco Gauff Is a Professional Tennis Player

Born on March 13, 2004, Cori “Coco” Grauff grew up in Atlanta. She became interested in Tennis at age four after watching Serena Williams win the Australian Open in 2009. She began playing at age six, and at age seven, her family moved to Delray Beach, Florida, where she could have better training opportunities. Coco credits winning the “Little Mo” eight-and-under nationals as when she knew she wanted to be a tennis player when she grew up. “I loved tennis,” she said in 2020, per The Guardian. “I was so-so about it in the beginning because when I was younger, I didn’t want to practice at all. I just wanted to play with my friends. When I turned eight, that was when I played ‘Little Mo’ and after that, I decided to do that for the rest of my life.”

She Is Following in Serena Williams’ Footsteps

In 2017, Coco listed her favorite players in the following order: “Serena, Venus [Williams], Madison Keys, and Sloan Stephens,” she said, per ESPN. Coco met first met Serena at the “Little Mo” tournament in New York, and they met again in 2015 during the shooting of a Delta commercial in West Palm Beach. “It was fun, a great experience,” Cori said to ESPN. “She has always been my favorite player. I got to hit some serves to her. I also met her in Nice, France [at the Patrick Mouratoglou training facility].”4

At age ten, Coco began training at France’s Mouratoglou Academy, run by Serena’s longtime coach. The training seemed to pay off. In 2014, she won the USTA Clay Court National 12-under title. At the time, she was 10 years, 3 months old, the youngest champion in history.

Coco Had a Breakout in 2019

Coco turned pro in 2018 and made her WTA debut at the Miami Open, per ESPN. She won her first match before losing in the second round. Her big breakout came the following year. After losing in straight sets in the second round of qualifying at the French Open, Coco secured a spot in Wimbledon after her application for a wildcard entry was approved. She surged through qualifying and defeated Venus Williams before ultimately losing in the fourth round to eventual champion, Simona Halep. “I wouldn’t be here without you,” Coco told Venus following her Wimbledon victory. Venus had already had four grand slam wins under her belt before Coco was born in 2004.

The run resulted in Coco being ranked No. 141 in the world. She continued her success at the 2019 US Open, reaching the third round where she was defeated by the world No. 1 and defending champion, Naomi Osaka.

…And Won Her First WTA Singles Title at Age 15

After making a splash at Wimbledon and the US Open, it wasn’t long before Coco claimed her first WTA victory. She won the 2019 Linz Open in Austria, defeating Jelena Ostapenko in the finale. She was 15 at the time. She won her second WTA tournament in May 2021, claiming the Emilia-Romagna Open after defeating Wang Qiang in two straight sets.

In 2022, she made it all the way to the final of the French Open. She fell to Iga Świątek in two straight sets.

She Uses Her Platform to Spread a Message

Coco has used her fame and celebrity status to speak out on social justice, particularly the countless number of Black men and women killed by police in America. “Wimbledon has given me an opportunity to raise money and raise awareness for other things and I’m glad that I was able to,” she told The Guardian. “With every match I win, I seem to get more and more people following me, so that’s good. And that means more and more awareness of subjects I care about. I always wanted to not just be a tennis player.”

“Lately, younger people are leading movements, and I guess the world has to get used to it because we’re used to older people telling us what to do,” she added. “My generation has just decided it was time to speak up on our own about things. I do follow the [climate] movement a lot, and I’m learning about ways we can better change, at least my lifestyle and the way my family lives.”

Emma Heming Willis can’t wait to go on tour to promote her book about caregiving

The model, 47, had been looking after her ailing husband Bruce Willis, 70, since he was diagnosed with dementia in 2023 and this week announced he had been moved to a separate home to receive professional help.

She has since been trolled for allowing the move while promoting herself as a caregiver.

But she has hit back at critics on Instagram, with her page revealing she can’t wait to go on her book tour to promote her upcoming book The Unexpected Road.

The book will tell of her path to becoming Bruce’s caregiver and she will give her first talk to promote the book on 8 September.

Emma wrote in what is her latest Instagram post: “One month out from taking The Unexpected Journey on the road, and I’m so excited to share with you the dates and places I’ll be.

“What I’m most looking forward to is being in a room with other caregivers. “That was one of the many reasons I wrote this book, to build deeper connection with those walking this path alongside me and my family.

“I hope to see you there and I can’t wait to connect in person. (Blue heart emoji.)

“Tour stops and details are in my bio or at emmahemingwillis.com under the “book” section. (Book emoji.) #theunexpectedjourney #caregiversupport #booktour.”

Emma hit back at trolls by saying she is being “judged quickly and unfairly” for the way she has been caring for Bruce.

She recently said it was the “hardest decision” to have him moved to a separate home where he now lives with a full-time care team.

Emma is bringing up their daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, and said on Instagram: “Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”

She added: “Too often, caregivers are judged quickly and unfairly by those who haven’t lived this journey or stood on the front lines of it.

“Sharing openly may invite opinions, but more importantly, it creates connection and validation for those actually navigating the realities of caregiving every day.”

Her book on caregiving is coming out on 9 September, and she says in a synopsis of the tome: “Caring for yourself while caring for someone else is one of the hardest, most heartbreaking challenges you’ll ever face. It’s easy to lose your sense of self.

“Through my own experience and insights from leading experts, I want to help care partners feel less alone, better prepared, and empowered to navigate this journey with strength and support. When you care for yourself first, you’re better able to care for your person.

“This isn’t just about surviving – it’s about finding connection, resilience, and even moments of joy along the way. You don’t have to do this alone.”

Gordon Ramsay is giving insight into his health battle.

Alongside a pair of photos that show a line of stitches running from the bottom of his ear to his jaw, which he later covered with a bandage, the British celebrity chef shared that he recently underwent a procedure to treat skin cancer.

“Grateful and so appreciative for the incredible team at The Skin Associates and their fast reactive work on removing this Basal Cell Carcinoma,” Gordon wrote on Instagram Aug. 30. “Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend.”

Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight, per the Mayo Clinic, which often appears as a slightly transparent bump on the skin.

“I promise you it’s not a face lift,” the 54-year-old continued. “I’d need a refund…”

And while the Kitchen Nightmares star—who shares kids Megan, 27, Jack, 25, Holly, 25, Matilda, 23, Oscar, 6, and Jesse, 21 months, with wife Tana Ramsay—has been keeping an optimistic and humorous outlook on the situation, his friends and family expressed their support in the comments.
