50 years later, why the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald haunts us still – National

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

It was a shipwreck so notorious, it inspired what many critics and listeners agree is one of the greatest songs of all time — a song that helped solidify its legend.

Fifty years ago, on Nov. 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a brutal storm on Lake Superior while sailing from Superior, Wisc., to Detroit. The entire crew of 29 men died in the Canadian waters.

A year later, the disaster was immortalized by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot when he released “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” which became an unlikely hit single in 1976 and remains popular to this day as both a totem of culture in Canada and the source of online memes.

“There were about 6,000 commercial shipwrecks on the Great Lakes between 1825 and 1975. Everybody knows one, and it’s because of the song,” said John U. Bacon, author of the new book The Gales of November: The Untold Story of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

The scale of the wreck itself also makes it stand out, historians say.

The Edmund Fitzgerald remains the largest ship ever to sink in the Great Lakes, which was a particularly booming industrial region in the mid-20th century following the Second World War, when hundreds of commercial vessels ferried raw materials in-between booming port cities on both sides of the border every year.

Before it sank, the over-200-metre-long freighter spent 17 years carrying taconite ore, a low-grade iron, from Minnesota mines to steel mills in Detroit, Toledo and other ports.

FILE – The Edmund Fitzgerald in a 1959 file photo, with a crew of 28 to 30 men, was carrying a load of 26,216 tons of taconite pellets. (AP Photo, file).

Sailors on the Great Lakes have regularly had to contend with fierce weather, something with which residents in those cities are all too familiar. As Lightfoot’s song underscores with its repeated references to “the gales of November,” the month brings particularly strong storms.

“The Great Lakes are more dangerous than the Atlantic Ocean, and it’s not even close,” said Bacon, who talked to former Fitzgerald crew members as well as the families of over a dozen of the shipwreck’s victims for his book. “Those guys (former sailors) told me that again and again and again.”

Part of the reason is the combustible mix of incoming Arctic air with still-warm lake water and humidity left over from the summer months, experts say, as the seasons shift.

“It’s that clash in temperature that creates these strong Great Lakes storms,” Global News chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell said.

“These storms cut from the Gulf of Mexico in the south right up into the Great Lakes, and that can lead to a very low barometric pressure and rather intense winds and waves in November.”

The 1975 storm that sank the Edmund was particularly intense, Farnell noted, with near-hurricane force winds of over 100 km/h and waves as high as 11 metres.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had one at at that level,” he said.

That shared experience of intense weather is part of what has bound people together on both the Canadian and American sides of the lakes, said Dan Rose, the collections coordinator at the Great Lakes Museum in Kingston, Ont.

Story continues below advertisement

He specifically pointed to the so-called White Hurricane of 1913, which struck around the exact same time of early November and hit the region with powerful blizzards, killing more than 250 people and blanketing cities from Toronto to Cleveland with snow.

“I think there’s just something that is so unifying about enduring conditions that are that treacherous and that trying, and being able to look across the water at our neighbours and say, ‘Geez, isn’t it great that we were able to bear down and endure these trials and tribulations?” he said.

“It really drives home how unifying it is to just face things head on and work together to solve a problem.”

That bond was only reinforced by the Edmund Fitzgerald disaster and the shared love of Lightfoot’s song, Rose and other historians said.

The Edmund Fitzgerald’s legacy also endures with the improvements to shipping safety and weather tracking on the Great Lakes spurred by the investigations into the sinking.

That’s also partially due to Lightfoot, whose song Bacon said “embarrassed” the shipping industry into action.

Farnell said forecasters can now see major storms approaching days or even weeks in advance, giving shippers plenty of warning. Ship captains are also less willing to venture into heavy storms just to make it to port on time, and have more advanced navigation and location beacons onboard in case disaster strikes.

To this day, not a single commercial freighter has sunk in the Great Lakes since the  Edmund Fitzgerald.

Yet historians still make a point to honour those past shipwrecks.

“We use the sinking of the Fitzgerald to bring attention to all the other sailors who have lost their lives on the Great Lakes,” said Billy Wall-Winkel, field curator of the Detroit Historical Society, which hosted several events and exhibitions to mark the 50th anniversary of the wreck leading up to Monday’s annual Lost Mariners Remembrance.

“We want to celebrate the people who built the country, rather than just the people who designed it or paid for it.”

Lightfoot’s song still endures

The harrowing story of the Fitzgerald is only part of why Lightfoot’s song continues to endure today for both Canadian and American listeners.

Story continues below advertisement

At nearly six minutes and with no chorus, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” relies on a repeating, circular melody that allows Lightfoot to lay out the history of the Great Lakes and that one fateful night in great detail.

“It’s mesmerizing,” said Maria Virginia Acuña, a music history and musicology professor at the University of Victoria who primarily studies early modern musical theatre, and who listened to the song for the first time after being asked to discuss it for this story.

“It’s soothing, but it’s also sad and tragic, like a lament … but the repetition captivates us and turns this historical event into something much more accessible and universal.”

Acuña, who grew up in Argentina, said her Canadian-born husband told her “how important this (song) is and how it’s a big part of our culture.”

The song, which hit number two on the Billboard 100 and number one in Canada in 1976, was given another boost of popularity after Lightfoot’s death in 2023. The artist himself said it was the song he was most proud of.

“It has a timeless quality to it,” Acuña said. “And I think like with all music, we take songs at different moments in our lives and they acquire new meanings.”

In the past few years, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” has inspired countless memes on TikTok, Reddit and Instagram. The “gales of November” lyric in particular has been used to refer to everything from the overwhelming power of nature to seasonal depression to the lengths one will go to get to a girlfriend’s house, connecting a new generation of listeners to the iconic story and song.

Story continues below advertisement

People online have also marveled that the wreck happened a relatively short time ago, instead of the 1800s or early 20th century — or even that it happened at all.

“It not just Gen Z — even boomers have said they had no idea,” said Bacon, who added he’s not surprised why the story of theEdmund Fitzgerald continues to attract new generations of listeners and readers.

“I think it’s also something just truly fundamental and elemental about human nature. Humans in a boat fighting the elements for their lives has captivated us since Noah’s Ark. So that’s not new, and we’re still fascinated.”

Gordon Ramsay has foul-mouthed response to suggestion of weightloss jab-friendly menus

by jummy84 November 10, 2025

10 November 2025

Gordon Ramsay has insisted there is “no way” he’ll be creating new menus to stop dieting diners feel like “fat f****”.

Gordon Ramsay isn’t changing his menus

The outspoken chef has no plans to follow the likes of Heston Blumenthal, who introduced a “mindful experience” reduced portion menu at his restaurant the Fat Duck in September to cater to those using weightloss medications.

He fumed to the Sunday Times: “That is absolute bulls***. There’s no f****** way we’re giving in to the Mounjaro jab …

“The problem is with them [the diners] for eating too much in the first f****** place!

“There’s no way that we’re coming in with an Ozempic tasting menu to make you feel like less of a fat f*** by 10.30 in the evening.”

Gordon – who has Megan, 27, twins Jack and Holly, 25, Tilly, 24, Oscar, six, and Jesse, two, with wife Tana – believes in the importance of self-discipline.

He said: “The older you get in this industry, you feel the downside of not getting the balance right.

“You can get sucked in, it gets too much and it destroys you, so I’ve always kept that incredible discipline of having a foot in each camp. I have to find time and space to balance out and recalibrate.”

And Gordon think the demands of modern diners make the industry much harder than it used to be.

He said: “[I get] incredibly p***** off with the boring philosophers who go, ‘Well in my day it was much harder’. No, it wasn’t.

“Coeliacs, dietary requirements … there’s so many demands now from customers; we were never faced with that kind of complication 20 to 30 years ago”.

In the summer, the 59-year-old star revealed he had undergone surgery to have a cancerous growth removed from his face, but he has now admitted he only spoke out to put paid to any speculation he’d had a facelift.

Praised for sharing the photo of himself with a plaster on his jawline to raise awareness, he admitted that hadn’t been his intention, but he simply wanted to avoid the sort of scrutiny Simon Cowell has faced over his appearance.

He said: “That f****** plaster was the size of a book cover, so I had to come clean.”

Gordon noted the incident “was a scare” but is grateful it was “dealt with immediately”.

We Can Tell You How to Get to Sesame Street—and More Secrets

‘Sesame Street’ Addresses Hacker Sharing “Disgusting” Posts on Elmo’s Account

Guess what? We can finally tell you how to get, how to get to Sesame Street.

After 56 years on air, the iconic children’s series—that made its debut on Nov. 10, 1969—is still one of the most beloved TV shows, by children and adults.

After debuting on national public television provider PBS, Sesame Street made household names out of Jim Henson‘s beloved Muppets such as Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert, Ernie, Mr. Snuffleupagus and more. Plus, it helped educate children about letters, numbers and, over time, more serious subject matters, like death, divorce and drug addiction.

All these years (and more than 4,700 episodes!) later, the show is as popular as ever, with a reported 100 percent brand recognition globally, airing in 180 countries.

But did you know one state actually banned the series, which moved from PBS to HBO in 2015? And that two Muppets were retired after sparking controversy?

Oh, and that Kermit the Frog actually exited the show after just one season? It really isn’t easy being green.

Rod Wave Arrested on Fir*arm & Dr#g Charges in Atlanta the Same Day He Earned His 1st Grammy Nod

Rod Wave was arrested in Georgia on dr*g and weapon charges on the same day he received his first-ever Grammy nomination, according to Fulton County jail records and a statement from his attorneys. The 27-year-old rapper, whose real name is Rodarius Green, was taken into custody in Atlanta on Nov. 7, 2025, and booked into the Fulton County Jail. He was released the following day after posting an $8,000 bond.

Jail records show Green is facing four charges: possession of a fire#rm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit a felony, reckless driving, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance — one listed as Schedule II and one as Schedule V.

In a statement to multiple outlets, Green’s legal team criticized the circumstances of the arrest, saying the rapper “was unjustly profiled and unlawfully arrested in Atlanta.” They alleged the arresting officer is part of the Atlanta Police Department’s Crime Suppression Unit, which they described as “a group known for its aggressive tactics and emphasis on high arrest numbers rather than genuine public safety.” The attorneys further called the arrest “a quota-driven approach” and said they intend to challenge it.

The arrest came just hours after Rod Wave earned his first Grammy nomination — in the category Best Song Written for Visual Media for the track “Sinners,” from the 2025 film of the same name. Despite his legal issues, he is still scheduled to launch “The Redemption Experience Tour” in December, beginning in Los Angeles.

This is the rapper’s third arrest in Georgia in 2025, following earlier incidents in May and June, though his attorneys have previously maintained his innocence in those cases.

bitchy | Kim Kardashian didn’t pass the California Bar exam, she plans to retake it

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Months ago, we learned that Kim Kardashian had completed her “law studies” course. Not to be confused with actual law school – Kim does not have a JD (Juris Doctor) degree, she has what amounts to a certificate of completion for her makeshift law studies. Still, that certificate was enough to get her a place to take the California Bar Exam, which she did about two months ago. She just got the results back in recent days. She did not pass. Which isn’t a huge surprise, considering Kim was literally just talking about how she used ChatGPT for “legal advice” on her law exams.

Kim Kardashian says she’s “not a lawyer yet.” Months after taking the California bar exam on July 29 and July 30, the SKIMS founder and reality star, 45, revealed her results on Saturday, Nov. 8.

In a candid Instagram Stories post, Kim shared that she failed to pass the exam — but is still determined to achieve her goal.

“Well…I’m not a lawyer yet, I just play a very well-dressed one on TV,” she wrote. “Six years into this law journey, and I’m still all in until I pass the bar. No shortcuts, no giving up – just more studying and even more determination.”

“Thank you to everyone who has supported and encouraged me along the way so far. Failing short isn’t failure – it’s fuel. I was so close to passing the exam and that only motivated me even more. Let’s go!” she added.

Given just twice per year, the California bar exam consists of five one-hour essay questions, one 90-minute performance test and 200 multiple-choice questions.

According to the California State Bar’s website, approximately 16,000 people take the exam each year. The two-day test is rigorous, with a pass rate of 63.6% for those who took the exam in February.

[From People]

For some reason, I always had the belief that the California Bar was “easier” compared to some other states’ bar exams. Isn’t New York’s Bar notoriously difficult? Let me look it up… while New York’s Bar exam is supposed to be really tough, California actually has the hardest exam, at least according to Google. So… Kim flunked a hard test after cheating and using AI on some of her law-studies tests. It is what it is. The only nice thing I’ll say is that it’s good that she’s not dissuaded – she’ll probably keep retaking the Bar until she passes. Study harder next time, Kim!

King Harris Honors Son In Heartfelt Instagram Post

Just a few days ago, King Harris got real emotional on Instagram. In a sweet post, he called his son King Jr. his “savior, best friend, EVERYTHING.” In a heartfelt post, he reflected on how fast time flies and opened up about being locked up just a month before KJ’s birthday last year. Jail records show King was arrested in Dunwoody, Georgia, for failure to appear in court over 2022 driving-related charges after a police officer discovered a warrant following a near-accident.

King’s post didn’t hold back, sharing how being locked up made him think about his family. “I remember getting locked up a month before you was born and in the cell thinking bout if you and your mama are ok… you are who I stayed strong for,” he wrote. King also added that KJ made him from a “boy to a man.” He also reminded fans he’s still the dad, setting boundaries while promising to teach his son life lessons and “tuff love” along the way.

The Best Casino Scenes in Movies – Hollywood Life

by jummy84 November 10, 2025
written by jummy84

Hollywood films include some iconic casino scenes, spanning a wide number of different movie genres. Setting a film in a casino is nostalgic, timeless, and creates a great environment for viewers to enjoy an unfolding plot.

Let’s review the best casino scenes in movies. These are not ranked in any particular order, but each scene deserves to be mentioned for its enduring impact and memorable moments.

Players looking to make their own moments playing the latest online casino games can claim the Golden Nugget online casino promo code. Qualify for $1,000 in casino credits via a lossback reward and 500 bonus spins. Play over 1,000 unique table games and slots after unlocking this online casino promo code as a newly registered customer at Golden Nugget today.

The James Bond movies have a casino reference in several titles, so this is an appropriate place to start. Specifically, the Macau Casino dragon pit scene from “Skyfall”. The cinematography of the dragon pit is alluring.

“Casino Royale”, a James Bond film released in 2006, includes the poker showdown scene. Bond squares off against Le Chiffre, the movie’s antagonist, playing a poker game in Montenegro. It’s a pivotal point of the plot in the film, as Bond attempts to win the pot, forcing his opponent to join MI6 protection in exchange for valuable information.

George Clooney’s iconic movie, “Ocean’s Eleven”, is a film that focuses its plot on a casino heist. Fans are given access to each phase of the heist’s plan, with plenty of suspense inserted to elevate its intensity. Danny Ocean, played by Clooney, sets out to rob three different casinos for $150 million alongside 11 other associates.

Robert De Niro stars in “Casino”, a movie released 30 years ago that also features other A-list actors, including Joe Pesci. In the film, De Niro’s character gets into a confrontation with a player who defies his request to leave the casino, forcing security to act accordingly.

Zach Galifinakis’ character in “The Hangover” leans on his mathematical ability to win several table games in Las Vegas, earning a massive payday at the casino. In the scene, numbers float across the screen, physically capturing Galifinakis’ rare and lucrative skillset, unbeknownst to the bachelor party.

That scene in The Hangover paid tribute to Dustin Hoffman’s character in “Rain Man” from the 1980s. Tom Cruise starred alongside Hoffman, whose autism allowed him to read numbers and win by card counting in blackjack.

Edward Norton and Matt Damon starred in the movie “Rounders.” Released in 1998, these two protagonists attempt to win big money by traveling around to win high-stakes poker to alleviate debt. The best scene is at the end, when Mike, Damon’s character, winds up beating Teddy “KGB” by baiting him to go all-in before the final hand.

Casinos are a prominent setting in Hollywood films and movies. Now that online casino gaming is taking off, it’s only fitting to pay tribute to some of these iconic casino scenes in pop culture lore.

Stellan Skarsgard refuses to give parenting advice to his kids

10 November 2025

Father-of-eight Stellan Skarsgard refuses to give parenting advice to his kids because it’s “very dangerous”.

Stellan Skarsgard has opened up about parenting

The Dune star, 74, is dad to six grown-up children – Alexander, 49, Gustaf, 44, Sam, 43, Bill, 35, Eija, 33, and Valter, 29 – with his first wife My Skarsgard as well as Ossian, 16, and Kolbjorn, 13, with his second wife Megan Everett and he is also now a grandfather but he’s adamant he won’t be passing on any of his wisdom about raising families.

He told PEOPLE: “I haven’t given them [his kids] any advice at all because it is very dangerous to do.

“Because if they listen to my advice and they’re successful, it’s because of me, and if they listen to my advice and they’re not successful, it’s my fault. So it’s a lose-lose situation.”

He added of his children: “Watching the characters and seeing how different they are. Even if they have the same genes, it’s amazing how different they are.

“All my eight kids, they’re very different too. There are some things in common, but they all have personalities.”

Four of Stellan’s older children have followed him into the acting industry and his two youngest boys are also keen on forging careers in Hollywood with Kolbjorn recently making his acting debut in 2022 miniseries Clark.

However, Stellan previously admitted the youngster has been given a tough time over his famous family connections by bullies at school who branded him a “nepo baby”.

Stellan told Vulture: “My 13-year-old, Kolbjörn, the youngest, suffers from that. “When his pals at school call him nepo baby, he gets so sad. He doesn’t have any friends at school.

“He gets isolated. Cruel kids – or cruel and ignorant. They love it on the internet. But it is such a bulls*** thing. Because nobody would hire you, at least not for anything good, if you’re not good enough.”

He went on to insist his kids have benefitted from his passion for his work, adding: “Your work is you to such a big extent. It’s not like being an accountant.

“If you’re a painter, if you’re a musician, you go to work with you and your own material. Combining that with family life is hard.

“But if you become a really good father and you are at home more than you want to be, then suddenly you reduce yourself …

“You’ve become some other person. It’s like you would think differently. You would act differently. You need your creative art. It’s your stimuli.

“And you are more fun to the kids when you come home and tell them a story that you can’t tell them if you haven’t been stimulated. I’m trying to defend myself now.”
