The just over 32-minute, nine-song set will be released Friday, and it’s not nearly as loud as the New Orleans’ jazzman’s eye-popping wardrobe. The stripped-down, mostly acoustic arrangements create a chill vibe. Simplicity somehow only intensifies the songs’ swing and sway.

Batiste pairs lyrics about devotion, values, angels and ecology with music that mixes folk and funk, gospel and the blues. The range is such that Batiste even plays a little fiddle and mandolin, but he shines brightest on two songs featuring his solo piano.

The first is a wonderful duet with Randy Newman, another piano man with New Orleans roots, who in recent years has been slowed by health issues and kept a low profile. They cover Doc Pomus’ “Lonely Avenue,” and Newman’s legendarily froggy tenor provides a comical contrast to Batiste’s vocal sheen. “I could die, I could die, I could die,” Newman sings. “It sounds like I’m dying.”

Also stellar is “Maybe,” a ballad filled with thick chords and questions about the big picture. “Or maybe we should all just take a collective pause,” Batiste sings, before launching into a keyboard exploration worthy of Jelly Roll Morton.

The bouncy “Lean on My Love” draws from Prince, Sly Stone and the Spinners as Batiste sings in unison with Andra Day. The equally buoyant title cut rhymes “money” and “dummy” in a strummy sing-along that includes backing vocals by the Womack Sisters, granddaughters of soul singer Sam Cooke.

“Pinnacle” chooses a similar tempo to kick up Delta dust around a delightful word salad. “Hop scotch/Double Dutchie jumping rope/Twistin’ it and ya wobble it/And let it go,” he sings on one verse.

Batiste’s gospel influences are most evident on the closing reggae tune “Angels” and the ballad “Do It All Again,” a love song that could be interpreted as secular or spiritual.

“When I’m happy, it’s your shine,” Batiste sings. As always, he makes joy sound genuine.

Coolie producer approaches Madras HC to challenge Rajinikanth film’s A certificate from CBFC for ‘celebrating violence’

After watching Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie, many were surprised why the film was awarded an A certificate.

The producer of Coolie, Sun TV Network Limited’s Sun Pictures, has approached the Madras High Court to challenge the A certificate granted to the Rajinikanth film by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). A report by The Hindu states that the producer was ‘shocked’ upon receiving an email from the certification board that their film ‘celebrated violence’.

Coolie is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and stars Rajinikanth in the lead role.

The A certificate given to Coolie meant that people under 18 could not watch the film in theatres. The production firm filed a civil miscellaneous appeal against the CBFC’s decision. It was pointed out that anyone who applies for a film certification can appeal before the tribunal within 30 days. Coolie was released in theatres on 14 August with an A certificate, and the film’s producers chose to release it before challenging the certification.

In the grounds of appeal, Sun Pictures had said that it produced Coolie to celebrate Rajinikanth completing 50 years in cinema and that the film had become a ‘mega blockbuster’. However, when they applied for the CBFC certification on 28 July, they claimed that they received a response on 31 July that the movie was ‘celebrating violence’ and would hence be given an A certificate. A revising committee also issued an A certificate for the film on 4 August.

Sun Pictures also questioned the CBFC for giving a U/A certificate for movies like Yash-starrer KGF and Vijay-starrer Beast, as those films had more violence than Coolie did.

Cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and YouTuber-actor Dhanashree Verma finalised their divorce earlier this year, bringing an end to their five-year marriage. While Chahal has spoken about the split in several interviews, Verma had remained silent until now. In a candid conversation, she described the court proceedings as “emotional” and expressed her shock over Chahal’s much-discussed “T-shirt stunt” outside the court, where he was spotted wearing a tee that read: “Be your own sugar daddy.”

Speaking to Humans of Bombay, Dhanashree recalled, “I genuinely feel that the day it actually happened, it was very emotional for me and my family. I still remember when I was standing there and the verdict was about to be given, even though you are so mentally prepared that it is going to happen, it was still so emotional. I literally started howling and crying in front of everybody. I cannot even express what I was feeling at that point of time.”

She added that she was unaware of Chahal’s T-shirt until later. “He walked out first, that whole thing happened with the T-shirt and media, and I wasn’t aware about it because I was still inside. I got out from the back gate because I was not liking that. It was just very sad, you don’t want cameras all over your face. Humko kuch nahi bataana tha, I was wearing normal t-shirt and jeans. I sat in the car, my best friend was there with me, and we were still trying to grasp our breath. It was that shaky moment, especially when you know people will blame you only.”

Dhanashree admitted she had anticipated being blamed even before the divorce was finalized. “Even before I knew about this T-shirt stunt, we were aware that people were going to hold me responsible for the divorce. In your head, you just want to move forward once it’s over. Until I took out my phone and saw it, I didn’t want to believe it. Ye sach mein isne aisa kiya? In that one second, I was like—it’s over. Why should I cry? Somewhere I felt bad, questioning myself—main kyu ro rahi thi? For this? That was the motivation I needed: I just had to laugh it out. In fact, that helped me. Everybody saw me in the courthouse… the way I was howling and crying. In moments like that, everything just flashes through your mind.”

When told that Chahal’s podcast remarks sounded like a final message to her, she quipped, “Arre bhai, WhatsApp kardeta!”

Chahal, meanwhile, had earlier defended his choice of T-shirt in a podcast with Raj Shamani. “I just felt like I wanted to give one message and I did that. Because something had happened from the other end… I didn’t want to do it earlier but then something happened and I decided, now everyone can go to hell, I will do what I want,” he said.

The couple filed for divorce in February 2024, with proceedings concluding this year. Following the split, Dhanashree faced intense trolling online, including allegations of infidelity, while Chahal has since been linked to content creator RJ Mahvash.

I would get paid about 10% of the salary of my male co-actor. It (pay parity) is large, substantially large. And so many women still deal with that. I’m sure I will too if I worked with a male co-actor now in Bollywood. My generation of female actors have definitely asked for equal pay. We’ve asked, but we’ve not got it. I thought it was absolutely okay to sit for hours and hours on set, while my male co-actor just took his own time, and decided whenever he wanted to show up on set is when we would shoot.”

Priyanka further reminisced about her earlier days in Bollywood, where she was body-shamed for her skintone. The Heads of State actress said, “I was called ‘black cat’ and ‘dusky’. I mean, what does dusky even mean in a country where we are literally all brown? I thought I was not pretty enough; I thought I had to work a lot harder, even though I thought I was probably a little bit more talented than my fellow actors who were light skinned. But I thought that was right because it was so normalised.”

She continued, “Of course, that comes from our colonial past. It’s not even been 100 years since we shed the British Raj, so we still hold on to it., I think. But it is up to our generation to be able to cut those ties and change it so that the next generation doesn’t inherit the equality placed on light skin,” she added.

I worked with acting coaches and dialect coaches. I did auditions, got rejected, cried, then went back for another one. I did the hustle that I needed to do to make it in any new industry. It was a humbling experience. I think maybe I have built a certain amount of credibility, and so I’m doing interesting work. We’ll see if that is accepted or not. It’s really hard to be South Asian and Indian in Hollywood. There’s still a long way to go,” she concluded.
