Tessa Thompson on Hedda: “Embodying My Character Made Me Interrogate Myself”

Actress Tessa Thompson takes the lead in the film Hedda, a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s 1891 classic Hedda Gabler, and also serves as a producer on the film. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the adaptation brings a contemporary lens to the original play and introduces a distinctly queer interpretation. During a global press conference, Thompson reflected on her decade-long creative partnership with DaCosta and spoke about revisiting Hedda Gabler for today’s audience.


About her Relationship with Nia DaCosta

Director Nia and Tessa’s working dynamic evolved over time. Tessa explained, “I first met her at the Sundance Film Labs. She wanted to make her first feature called Little Woods and I was there just donating my time. I didn’t think that we would go on to make a film together. And that began our collaboration, 10 years ago. When she first told me that she wanted to work on an adaptation of Hedda Gabler, I didn’t imagine that she meant she wanted me to play Hedda. It’s a character that’s captivated me. But I didn’t understand what the sort of cinematic imperative was to retell it in this time. And it was only when I read her first draft, I really understood what she wanted to do with it, which is to take it apart and put it back together.”
About the Challenges She Faced as an Actor and Producer
Making the Hedda Gabler adaptation wasn’t easy. The Hollywood writers’ strike made things extra difficult. Tessa said, “Two days before we began shooting, the strike happened (Hollywood strike). And we thought it would just be a couple of weeks, and it ended up being a double strike, which lasted for some time. One of the challenges was to keep it afloat. We had already moved into this incredible estate, and we had wallpapered the place, and brought in a lot of lacquer. Another challenge was to convince our collaborators and the homeowners to keep the house dressed, because otherwise we probably wouldn’t have been able to make the movie. Those were the productional challenges.”

Not just this, but Thompson faced certain challenges as an actor as well, including getting into the dress for her character, which she feels was not kind to her body. She continued, “It was challenging to gain an understanding of the piece. I did that by watching every adaptation I could get my hand on, reading all of the different translations of the work, and trying to understand architecturally why this a piece that has captivated us for so long. Wearing that dress – the boning and construction of 1950s silhouettes, which are not the kindest to a body, was also challenging. But what’s inherent in the design is the idea that Hedda Gabler is confined and constricted, not just by her time but by her choices.”

Playing Hedda Changed Tessa’s Own Persona
Hedda is smart and calculative, a bit different from Thompson, who calls herself naive. But playing this character did have an impact on her. She explained, “I am a bit naive. Even though we work in an industry where you can sometimes feel those dynamics in the rooms we occupy, I try to ignore that and just relate to people as people, not for what they do or what they can do for me. I’ve always been a bit allergic to that way of moving through the world. But I think embodying a woman who isn’t afraid of that kind of manipulation made me interrogate myself.”
Tessa’s Initial Reaction To Nia DaCosta’s Adaptation of 130-Year-Old Material

Adapting a 130-year-old material also meant that they had to be careful about placing it in the modern context so that it finds relatability. Thompson elaborated, “Something that really struck me was obviously this huge fundamental change that Nia’s made by making a character who’s typically a man, Eilert Lovborg, into Eileen Lovborg It makes the piece queer in a way that the original piece isn’t. It also gives Hedda a real foil. Another woman who’s in the world and making very different choices. Our piece wants to explore pathways to personhood and gaining agency over one’s life. In the original piece, you have Hedda saying, “For once, I want to be in control of a man’s destiny.”  And I think in our piece, you see a woman struggling with trying to be in control of her own. Those struggles, even the ones that Eileen are facing of trying to be taken seriously in spaces that are male dominated, is something that I understand.”

Putting Hedda Into A Modern Context

The Thor: Ragnarok actress added, “We exist now in a time where there’s so much positivity around sisterhood or women in relation to each other and I am grateful for that. And this is a woman [Hedda] isn’t necessarily interested in that. She acts out of jealousy and envy. The idea of a woman being quite jealous of another woman and acting out on does not have a lot of grace in the world that we live in now, which I appreciate. But if these feelings are left unchecked, and we don’t allow ourselves to sit with those feelings, we actually cut off parts of ourselves that are important. That was something interesting to unpack through playing her.  And something that I’m really interested in modern audiences to engage with.”

“Weird Al” Yankovic has announced a massive expansion to this year’s Bigger & Weirder Tour. The parody musician will continue the trek in 2026 with an additional 90 stops throughout North America, including in cities such as Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas, Austin, Kansas City, Milwaukee, and more. As on the previous leg of the Bigger & Weirder Tour, the singer Puddles Pity Party will support. See the full roster of dates below.

The Bigger & Weirder Tour kicked off this past June in Las Vegas and wrapped in September in Nashville, with stops in over 60 cities. Earlier this year, Yankovic starred in the Ayo Edebiri–directed music video for Clairo’s “Terrapin,” from her 2024 album Charm, in which he acted as a stand-in for Clairo. Yankovic released his most recent studio album, Mandatory Fun, in 2014.

The Game Awards 2025 take place on 11th December 2025, with the show being broadcast live from Los Angeles.

In a surprising confession on Kaun Banega Crorepati 17, actor Manoj Bajpayee revealed that Amitabh Bachchan once gave him a serious scare, “killed me,” in his words, while filming a stunt nearly 85 feet high. Hearing that, Manoj said he panicked even more. “I was already very scared,” he told Big B, according to the promo. “Aur phir aapne kaha, ‘Sach mein ghar pe mere khabar kar dena’.”

The tension in the moment was not just physical: Manoj joked that the whole sequence felt like a “planned mission” to terrify him. “The whole thing was planned — to take me up there, to prank me,” he said.

Bajpayee didn’t sugarcoat how intense the moment was. “Inhone meri jaan le li thi,” he said — “he took my life.” His raw honesty and humor won laughs from fellow guests Jaideep Ahlawat and Sharib Hashmi, but the underlying sentiment was serious.

Sombr announces last minute, intimate London KOKO show

Sombr has announced details of a last minute, intimate gig at London’s KOKO.

The new show will take place later this week, and comes fresh off the singer-songwriter making his debut performance on Saturday Night Live, and securing Grammy Award nomination in the coveted Best New Artist category.

Set to take place at KOKO in Camden, the gig will be a one-off show, held on Friday (November 21).

It comes as a warm-up to the UK and European tour dates Sombre has planned for 2026, which will see him play in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Italy and more throughout February and March, before heading back to the UK for shows in London, Manchester, Birmingham and more.

The second group of the Top 9 artists hit the stage in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on the Sunday, November 16, episode of The Road. This week, five singers performed a cover song and an original song while opening up for Keith Urban, with his audiences rating the performances on their phones afterwards.

At the end of the night, Urban and Blake Shelton revealed the top-rated performer, and then they decided who would be going home out of the bottom two. One singer took a big risk by singing a powerful cover song, but it ended up coming back to haunt her.

Channing Wilson

After being in the Top 3 in Week 1 and finishing at the top of his group in Week 2, Channing Wilson knew he had to keep the momentum going. He performed “The Weatherman” as his cover, and Urban noted, “He’s so relatable. As soon as he starts talking, I like him immediately.”

For his original song, he sang “Gettin’ Out of My Mind,” which he described as a “honkey tonk and boot-stompin’ kind of song.” Urban said it was a “great choice” and that Channing “played to the room perfectly. Shelton added, “I want him to keep going!”

Shelton also noted that this show could finally be Channing’s big break, at which point, Urban pointed out, “If Jelly Roll can win Best New Artist at 39…”

Billie Jo Jones

Billie Jo Jones’ confidence was at an all-time low after her last performance in Dallas, Texas. This week, she was still fighting the illness that’s been plaguing her throughout the competition.

Still, she came to the stage with a powerhouse vocal cover, singing Martina McBride‘s “Broken Wing.” Her original song was called “Whose Tequila Are You Drinkin’?” Shelton said, “I thought she did good. My only critique would be that she followed Channing, and that’s a tough task.”

Briana Adams’ cover song choice of “I Will Always Love You” by Dolly Parton was “concerning” for tour manager Gretchen Wilson, who admitted that she wasn’t sure it was a risk that would pay off.

However, Urban said he “liked” the performance, although he later noted, “I wouldn’t choose it as my cover in a rowdy bar.” Shelton admitted, “I sit here a million times and say, ‘Why don’t they do a song that everybody knows,’ and of course everybody knows ‘I Will Always Love You,’ but just … something about that felt like … she overshot it a little.”

Briana’s original song was called “Belle of the Beer Bash,” which had the crowd holding their drinks up in the air. “She was pretty good,” Urban said. “I don’t know what she could’ve done differently.”

Adam Sanders sang “Heads Carolina, Tails California” for his cover, which Urban said was a “good choice.” Wilson pointed out that Adam has “a lot of confidence, as far as stage presence, vocal ability, song writing ability,” but added that he’s “only showing us one kind of side” with his performances.

He changed it up a bit with his cover, singing a power ballad called “Burning Roses” instead of a more up-tempo song. “That was a good combination,” Urban confirmed. “His voice was suited to the original. That’s his spot right there. The cover didn’t suit him vocally, but it was a good choice. The crowd loved it. He can work a crowd.”

Shelton agreed, adding, “That guy … he should be a politician.”

Closing out the show was Britnee Kellogg, who began her set with a cover of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”

“Britnee’s one of those vocalists where you don’t realize how powerful she can really be because she’s sort of soft spoken, then all of a sudden she hits these notes when she gets up there that are really incredible,” Shelton raved.

Britnee’s original was a personal tune called “She’s Come a Long Way,” and Urban said, “Britnee did great. That’s a really hard cover, and then her original connected to that audience.”

Who went home on The Road Episode 5?

After the show, Urban revealed that Channing once again received the highest rating of the night. Unfortunately, Billie Jo and Briana were in the bottom two. The guys ultimately decided to eliminated Briana.

“You both sounded really incredible,” Shelton confirmed. “For us, we feel like from the connection that was had here tonight on stage, Billie Jo was the one we’re going to move forward to next week.”

Briana admitted that she “figured as much” and acknowledged that her cover song choice was a “gamble.” Although she got emotional, she added, “Thank you so much for this opportunity. I got to come here and be unapologetically myself.”

Adam, Channing, Billie Jo, and Britnee will be joining Cassidy Daniels, Jenny Tolman, and Cody Hibbard in the next city: Tulsa, Oklahoma!

There are a myriad of ways in which young designers can stand out online in our social media age, but nothing comes close to coming face-to-face with a pantheon of fashion leaders. That is the promise of the LVMH Prize, which puts emerging talent in front of designers like Phoebe Philo, Jonathan Anderson, Maria Grazia Chiuri, and more. Today, applications for the 2026 edition of the competition are officially open.

The LVMH Prize has changed the trajectory of many designer hopefuls over the years, including Simon Porte Jacquemus, Grace Wales Bonner, and Steven Stokey-Daley. “We don’t want to just buy clothes today; we want to support people who are sending a message to the world,” said Silvia Venturini Fendi, a judge of the Prize, at last year’s final. Chiuri, who is now officially headed to Fendi and is also a juror, added, “There’s the creativity, but then the idea of what they want to build for the future, the perspective of their brand. They were all interesting, very different, but you feel that all the brands had a personal story.”

“Let’s go get your sister!” Check out this funky & colorful official trailer for the peculiar French animated film titled Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds, directed by Benoît Chieux. This actually opened in the US last year thanks to GKids – and originally premiered back in 2023 at the Annecy Film Festival. However, I’m just now catching up with it and it looks crazy cool. Especially for animation geeks. “A psychedelic fairy tale years in the making comes from the imagination of director Benoît Chieux. With captivating creatures and a vibrant Seussian world, Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds is a kaleidoscopic fantasy adventure bursting with charm and wonder.” Juliette and her sister Carmen are transported to the Kingdom of Winds after finding an enchanted book. They are also transformed into cats. Juliette causes an accident that upsets the Kingdom’s locals, leading its ruler to give Juliette to the songstress Selma, while also sentencing Carmen to marry his son. Will they find their way out? This looks super wacky and weird and tons of fun. Get a look.

One day, the adventurous Juliette and her sister Carmen find an enchanted toy and get swept away into the Kingdom of the Winds. They are transformed into cats and find themselves in a fantastical new world full of flying divas, technicolor dragons, and other mind-melting creations. When Juliette causes an accident that draws the ire of the local inhabitants, the Mayor gives Juliette to the beautiful songstress Selma and sentences Carmen to marry his son as punishment. The sisters must find a way to escape before the wedding bells ring, but the key to their journey home lies with Sirocco, the mysterious wizard feared for his ferocious storms. Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds is directed by French animation filmmaker Benoît Chieux, director of Aunt Hilda! and Melting Heart Cake previously. The screenplay is written by Alain Gagnol and Benoît Chieux. Produced by Ron Dyens. This initially premiered at the 2023 Annecy Film Festival and was already released in France in late 2023. White plays the Lions-Packers game, Malone headlines the Cowboys-Chiefs game, and Lil Jon performs at the Ravens-Bengals game

The NFL has announced the halftime performers for its Thanksgiving games, which include Jack White, Post Malone, and Lil Jon.

The festivities on Nov. 27 kickoff with the holiday’s traditional Detroit Lions game. The Lions will host the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field in Detroit, and hometown hero Jack White will headline the halftime festivities. Fellow Detroiter Eminem and his manager Paul Rosenberg will executive produce the halftime event.

White — who is fresh off being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Meg White as the White Stripes — shared the news on Instagram alongside the Detroit Lions, the NFL, and others. He posted video of blue vinyl being pressed, which features a label on the record announcing his appearance. The post is captioned, “Hot off the press.”

Post Malone will hit the halftime stage when his favorite team the Dallas Cowboys take on the Kansas City Chiefs at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. In a joint Instagram post with the team, the NFL, and others, Malone shared a video that shows him wearing a Cowboys jacket and driving a semi-truck into Dallas. “Bigger is always better,” he says in the clip announcing his performance.

“I’m from Texas. I grew up a Cowboys fan and have been watching this halftime show for years,” Malone said in a statement. “It’s a real honor to be part of the Red Kettle Kickoff with The Salvation Army and the Dallas Cowboys and help bring hope to so many people.”

Lil Jon is set to perform the halftime show when the Baltimore Ravens host the Cincinnati Bengals at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Hamilton star Renée Elise Goldsberry will sing the national anthem at the game, the Ravens announced last week.
