See Full List of Finalists

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

The USC Libraries have named the 2026 finalists for their 38th annual Scripter Awards, which honor the year’s most accomplished adaptations of the written word for the screen. The awards, which go to one film and one television series, recognize both the authors of the original works and the screenwriters who adapted them.

Additionally, author Michael Connelly, responsible for the novels that became hit television series like “Bosch” and “The Lincoln Lawyer,” will accept the USC Libraries Literary Achievement Award at the Scripter ceremony for his contributions to the art of mystery storytelling, both on the page and on the screen.

Jules Cote appears in Some Kind of Refuge by Alexandra Kern, an official selection of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

On the film side, the Scripter Award has been a serious bellwether for the Oscars, having predicted four out of five of the last few Best Adapted Screenplay award winners. Screenwriter Peter Straughan, who won the film award in 2025 for “Conclave” alongside novelist Robert Harris, is nominated again this year for the TV award for his work adapting Hilary Mantel’s novel “The Mirror and the Light” into the PBS series “Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light.”

One unique element to the Scripter Awards is that, in their focus on honoring the written word as a source of inspiration for screen storytellers, only works adapted from books or book series, novellas, short stories, graphic novels, plays, or magazine articles are eligible. The rules have changed this year for video game adaptations like “The Last of Us” and “Fallout” to no longer be eligible. Characters originating in previously published works are also not considered eligible source material, so films like “Wake Up Dead Man” and “Bugonia” were not in the running for the film award.

The 2026 Scripter selection committee selected the finalists from a field of 43 film and 64 television adaptations. USC professor Howard Rodman, a former president of the Writers Guild of America, West, chairs the committee, which includes journalists, authors, screenwriters, producers, and Elizabeth Daley, dean of the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

The USC Libraries will announce the winning authors and screenwriters at a black-tie ceremony on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, in the Town & Gown ballroom at the University of Southern California.

The finalist writers for film adaptation are, in alphabetical order by film title:

Guillermo del Toro for “Frankenstein” based on the novel “Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus” by Mary Shelley

Chloe Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell for “Hamnet” based on O’Farrell’s novel of the same name

Paul Thomas Anderson for “One Battle After Another” based on the novel “Vineland” by Thomas Pynchon

Ira Sachs for “Peter Hujar’s Day” based on the book of the same name by Linda Rosenkrantz

Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar for “Train Dreams” based on the novella of the same name by Denis Johnson

The finalist writers for episodic series are, in alphabetical order by series title:

Max Hurwitz and Billy Luther for the episode “Ábidoo’niidę́ę́ (What He Had Been Told),” from “Dark Winds,” based on the novels “Dancehall of the Dead” and “The Sinister Pig” by Tony Hillerman

Mike Makowsky for the episode “Destiny of the Republic,” from “Death by Lightning,” based on Candice Millard’s nonfiction book “Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and the Murder of a President”

Chandni Lakhani and Scott Frank for the untitled first episode of “Dept. Q,” based on the novel “The Keeper of Lost Causes” by Jussi Adler-Olsen

Will Smith for the episode “Scars,” from “Slow Horses,” based on the novel “London Rules” by Mick Herron

Peter Straughan for the series “Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light,” based on the novel “The Mirror and the Light” by Hilary Mantel

We all know someone with incredible skin — but getting there takes work. From applying sunscreen to being religious with retinol, chances are they’ve already nailed their skincare lineup. Still, even the best routines can benefit from a little extra help.
Skincare tools have come a long way since the days of intimidating dermarollers. Today’s options include LED masks that help heal and rejuvenate skin with red, infrared, and blue light, microcurrent devices that tone and boost radiance, and cryotherapy tools that de-puff in minutes.
So help them become their own facialist with these 10 skincare tools, starting at $18, all recommended by our beauty director.
All linked products are independently selected by our editors. If you purchase any of these products, we may earn a commission.

NuFACE Trinity Facial Toning Kit

They’ll be hard-pressed to find a dermatologist or esthetician who hasn’t tried — and loved — a NuFACE microcurrent facial toning device. Unlike many facial tools that require weeks of consistent use, results are visible immediately. Using low-level electrical currents, it stimulates the facial muscles to create a lifted, tightened effect. The kit also includes two conductive products, allowing the device to glide smoothly over skin without irritation. Snatched jawline, loading.

Shark Beauty CryoGlow Under-Eye Cooling+LED Anti-Aging & Skin Clearing Face Mask

If you really want to impress your giftee, wearing this mask feels akin to a professional facial. It’s packed with red and infrared LED lights that, once absorbed by the skin, activate fibroblasts — the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin, which keep skin firm, resilient, and hydrated. Red light is also known to help treat breakouts by reducing inflammation and targeting acne-causing bacteria. This mask does all that and more, with the addition of blue light to help calm redness, plus cooling under-eye technology to soothe tired, inflamed skin.
Shark CryoGlow Under-Eye Cooling+LED Face Mask, $, available at Ulta

Skin Gym CryoRoll Ice Roller

The skin-icing trend isn’t going anywhere — just ask Hailey Bieber, who famously dunks her face into a bowl of ice water before red carpet events. While that can get messy, Skin Gym’s CryoRoll Ice Roller streamlines the soothing, skin-awakening ritual. Simply fill it with water and place it in the freezer. Once frozen, remove the lid and glide it over your face to de-puff under-eye bags and refresh tired skin. You can even add a few drops of hyaluronic acid serum to boost hydration.

ZIIP Halo Microcurrent Facial Device

It also comes with a conductor gel for easy gliding, and its ergonomic design makes it super easy to maneuver. We’ve heard some derms extolling its virtues, and thousands of glowing reviews highlight noticeable improvements in fine lines and sagging skin.

‘Zootopia 2’ Dominates Again as Local Titles Hold

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Disney’s animated sequel “Zootopia 2” continued to tower over the Korean box office, delivering $6.7 million from more than 1 million admissions over the Dec. 12–14 frame. According to KOBIS, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, the film now stands at a commanding $35.2 million cumulative gross since its Nov. 26 debut, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the weekend’s total market share.

Local comedy-drama “The People Upstairs” held firmly in second place, adding $948,236 to lift its total to $2.6 million after two weekends in release. The film drew 140,352 admissions across 768 screens, remaining the strongest Korean performer in the chart. Directed by Ha Jung-woo and starring Gong Hyo-jin, Kim Dong-wook, Lee Ha-nee and Ha Jung-woo himself, the film follows a downstairs couple driven to exhaustion by constant noise from their upstairs neighbours. A tense dinner meant to resolve the issue quickly unravels into an evening of sharp confessions and shifting dynamics.

Family fare “Pororo the Movie: Sweet Castle Adventure” opened in third with $449,879 from 74,435 admissions, narrowly edging out Universal’s horror sequel “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” which collected $449,123 and pushed its cumulative tally to $1.2 million.

Japanese action-fantasy “Jujutsu Kaisen: Shibuya Incident / Culling Game – The Movie” followed in fifth, earning $405,974 for a running total of $2 million. Directed by Shōta Goshozono, the film condenses the anime’s Shibuya Incident arc as Yuji Itadori and his allies face a coordinated curse attack on Halloween. The aftermath sets up the looming Culling Game and Yuta Okkotsu’s mission that puts Yuji’s fate in jeopardy.

In sixth place, “Wicked: For Good” added $224,840, bringing its Korean total to $6.4 million. “The Running Man” placed seventh with $115,810 in its second weekend.

South Korean crime comedy “The Informant” slipped to eighth, grossing $86,310 for a cumulative $916,697. Directed by Kim Seok, the film stars Heo Sung-tae and Jo Bok-rae as a compromised smuggling informant and a hapless detective who blunders into the operation. Forced into an uneasy alliance after both take substantial losses, the pair attempt to claw their way back while dismantling the criminal ring.

Illusionist sequel “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” followed with $81,568, lifting its total to $8.7 million.

Rounding out the top 10, Japanese filmmaker Miyake Sho’s Locarno Golden Leopard winner “Two Seasons, Two Strangers” earned $80,278, bringing its cumulative gross to $136,275. Drawing from Tsuge Yoshiharu’s 1967 and 1968 short stories, the film follows a screenwriter named Lee (played by Korean actress Shim Eun-kyung) as she embarks on contrasting seasonal journeys — a summer encounter at a seaside town and a winter retreat to a remote mountain lodge.

The top 10 films collectively grossed $9.5 million over the Dec. 12–14 weekend, down from the previous frame’s $12.1 million.

How to Style Black Tights With All the Winter 2025 Trends

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Single-digit temperatures are nigh, which only means one thing: It’s time to find out how to style black tights for winter 2025. They’ve been rolled up in the corner of your sock drawer all year, but now they’re a key wardrobe player again.

Because, let’s be honest, no one wants uncomfortable goose bumps to throw a wrench in their cold-weather plans. (We’ve all been there, no?) Incorporate black hosiery into your looks, however, and you don’t need to bid adieu to your favorite summer dresses and skirts during winter.

By nature, black tights exude a no-fuss, pared-back vibe. That doesn’t mean you can’t take them into high-style territory, however. But how to make sure they fit with the winter 2025 style trends? The first step in your outfit planning is to decide on the opacity you want to wear. Sheer pantyhose, for instance, convey a dressy vibe. They’re a smart choice for a night out, weddings, and other special occasions that call for a slightly formal ensemble. For an everyday style, however, you might slip into a pair of opaque tights. They have a high denier (in other words, they’re much thicker than sheer styles). And let’s not forget about fishnet designs. Sure, the skin-revealing pantyhose may not be as warm as the other two styles, but they’re a surefire way to edge up your winter ensembles.

Once you choose your preferred pantyhose, it’s time to get to work. And this is where we come into the picture. Below, we compiled six black tight outfit ideas to emulate during the colder months using a mix of wardrobe staples and the season’s trendiest pieces.

Finite Films & TV Hires Paddy Hughes In Original Branded Content Push

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

EXCLUSIVE: British producer Finite Films & TV has appointed Paddy Hughes as Creative Director to shepherd a slate of original branded content.

The BAFTA-nominated Director and Producer – who has worked in television, subscription streaming, digital and commercial content for 20 years – will work alongside Finite founder and executive producer Amy Gardner, and oversee and develop original content partnerships with brands, including projects for digital-first platforms.

Hughes has produced and directed factual entertainment, documentaries and scripted programming for leading distributors such as the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Disney and Sky. He has worked as a producer and director for the likes of Little Dot Studios, Future Studios and Cowshed Collective.

He has also landed series commissions for UK and U.S. channels such as BBC3 and Fullscreen, the latter being 2015 short-form scripted sitcom Jack&Dean of All Trades, starring Jack Howard and Dean Dobbs with Jessica Hynes. In 2018, he was nominated for a BAFTA for BBC3’s Eating with My Ex.

This year, he has focused on branded entertainment for Channel 4, and working with Left Bank Pictures to develop a digital drama slate and strategy. He also founded Romalo Film&Creative, a production start-up servicing branded production, YouTube and films.

His hire comes after Finite launched an unscripted division, with celebrity competition series Wings & Waves, made in partnership with global sportswear brand North Sails. Hughes will seek to strike similar partnerships in his role.

“Paddy brings an extraordinary level of experience and creative vision,” said Gardner. “His passion for premium storytelling and knowledge of brand-driven content aligns perfectly with our ambitions, and his appointment signals an exciting next phase for growing our branded slate.”

“My career has taken me from traditional television into the fast and ever evolving world of digital and branded content,” added Hughes. “Finite have some really interesting clients and I’m excited to shape genre busting work that pushes creative boundaries.”

Finite’s scripted slate features the psychological horror, The Fears, from Doctor Who director Andrew Gunn, and Ben & Lucy, starring Steven Cree and directed by Cora Bissett. It will co-produce the first English-language feature film from director Anu Menon, titled Two of Us, alongside Bright Pictures. The company recently attached writer Sophia Al-Maria to its TV series The Many Lives of Miss K.

A Prolific True-Crime Producer Was Allegedly the Criminal the Whole Time

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

Hollywood’s true-crime boom has always thrived on the idea that monsters live somewhere else—on the other side of the screen, safely contained inside reenactments and ominous narration. But every once in a while, the call comes from inside the house.

This week, the FBI dropped a bombshell that reads like a script twist even Netflix would reject as “too on the nose.” Mary Carole McDonnell, a longtime true-crime producer and the woman behind Bellum Entertainment, has been placed on the FBI’s Most Wanted list—accused of being a prolific fraudster who allegedly conned banks out of nearly $30 million while posing as a wealthy aviation heiress.

Yes. The woman selling murder for a living, the feds say, was allegedly committing financial crimes the entire time.

You can’t make this up.

“They Don’t Pay on Time”

Back in 2017, showrunner Nigel Bellis got a heads-up before taking a gig with Bellum Entertainment.

“They have a habit of not paying on time.”

Bellis went anyway. Like so many in this industry, he gambled on a producer with momentum. Bellum was cranking out content at an insane pace—more than 50 episodes of Murderous Affairs shot in New Orleans. Payments were late, sure, but they arrived.

Then McDonnell dangled the Hollywood carrot: a bigger role, Los Angeles, upward mobility. Bellis packed up his life and moved.

Within weeks, the entire operation imploded.

Bellum went belly-up. Payroll vanished. Relocation money evaporated. And Bellis found himself trapped in a nightmare straight out of the genre he’d been producing.

“I had very little after the move,” Bellis said. “I was absolutely counting on that money.”

He wasn’t alone.

The Heiress Who Wasn’t

According to federal prosecutors, McDonnell—now 73—posed as an heiress to the McDonnell Aircraft fortune to secure massive loans. The FBI says she and her then-attorney Barry Rothman (who died in 2018) presented banks with fraudulent documents claiming she controlled:

— A $28 million bank account
— An $80 million trust

One lender, Banc of California, allegedly bought the story and extended a $15 million “bridge loan” while McDonnell supposedly waited for her trust to pay out.

Problem is, prosecutors say the money never existed.

The collateral account? Fake.
The trust? Fiction.

McDonnell defaulted. The FBI says similar schemes across multiple institutions brought her alleged take close to $30 million.

By the time a 2018 indictment dropped in the Central District of California, McDonnell was already gone—believed to have fled to Dubai, where the FBI now says she may still be operating.

“Publicity is an investigative tool,” an FBI spokesperson said this week. Translation: if you’ve seen her, heard from her, or been pitched by her lately—call us.

The Other Victims: Below-the-Line

Banks may have lost millions, but Hollywood’s lower-tier workers lost something else: time, housing, stability.

Bellis alone is owed roughly $500,000 in back pay, damages, and statutory penalties. Other Bellum employees and contractors won judgments years ago—and still haven’t seen a dime.

Joshua Koffman, another former Bellum producer, put it bluntly.

“If she’s caught, her assets will be seized,” he said. “And selfishly, I’m worried there won’t be anything left for the little people who worked for her.”

That’s the dirty secret of white-collar crime: when the hammer finally falls, it rarely lands where it should.

A Pressure Cooker Built on Smoke

Former staff describe Bellum as a nonstop grind—new shows constantly in production, old content sold off cheap to fund the next project, everything running hot and unstable.

But everyone agrees on one thing: Mary Carole McDonnell could sell ice to a funeral home.

That skill, former employees say, explains how the operation kept moving long after it should’ve collapsed—and how banks allegedly got played.

“Like a Knife in the Back”

Stephanie Manos joined Bellum in 2016 as an office manager in New Orleans. In reality, she did everything—set dressing, casting extras, acting in reenactments. It was fun. It was creative. It felt like a break from years of brutal work in garment factories and kitchens.

But it came at a cost.

Manos gave up a rent-controlled Echo Park apartment she’d lived in for 20 years—$750 a month, gone forever. When Bellum collapsed, she couldn’t afford to move back. That same apartment now rents for $2,800.

She stayed in New Orleans, burned through her savings, and eventually took a job at a funeral home.

“It was like a knife in the back,” she said. “She took advantage of all of us.”

True Crime, No Cutaways

Hollywood loves crime—just not when it’s real, and not when it’s happening on the payroll side of the call sheet.

Now, as the FBI hunts for a fugitive producer halfway across the world, a long line of unpaid workers is left watching from the sidelines, wondering if justice—like their checks—will ever actually clear.

In true-crime fashion, the irony is brutal:

The woman who made her money selling stories about deception, victims, and consequences may finally have to star in one herself.

And this time, there’s no reenactment.

‘Palm Royale’ Creator Breaks Down the Carol Burnett Season 2 Scene

by jummy84 December 15, 2025
written by jummy84

With Palm Royale, creator and writer Abe Sylvia has crafted a bright, boisterous dramatic comedy pitched perfectly to the charms and talents of its star, Kristen Wiig (who plays aspiring socialite Maxine Dellacorte-Simmons). But just under the surface of the series’ high comedy, high society and high hair lie hard truths about being a woman of ambition: what it means to be a “have-not” in the glamorous world of “haves,” and the cost of getting all you’ve ever wanted — and what some are willing to do to hold on to even a handful of it. In season two of the series, which also stars Carol Burnett, Laura Dern, Allison Janney and a coterie of notable faces that includes Julia Duffy as fellow socialite Mary Davidsoul, Sylvia ups the ante, putting his characters in direct conflict as they stake even more entitled claims to things that were never theirs. Old frictions become new frays in the very first episode as Norma (Burnett) and Linda, née Penelope (Dern), collide in a tête-à-tête dispensing new secrets and poignant credos after the explosive season one finale that left Robert (Ricky Martin) shot and Linda cuffed.

Erica Parise/Courtesy of Apple TV+

After Carol Burnett’s Norma spent much of season one mumbling or unconscious in the background, Sylvia wanted her front and center, driving action in season two. “I really wanted to take the opportunity to introduce the audience to Norma in her full power, as only Carol Burnett could embody her,” Sylvia says. “This season, we wanted to leave nothing on the table in terms of the wondrous powers of our actors. And so right out of the gate, we wanted Norma to be driving the first episode.”

Erica Parise/Courtesy of Apple TV+

When talking about harsh societal realities, Sylvia distills the ethos of the entire show through Norma in this quick exchange. “She’s saying a real truth there: ‘You have agency, you have your own money and you have conviction. You are the poster girl for the enemy within,’ ” Sylvia says. “It’s set against this ridiculous story, but what woman in this country hasn’t felt that way? Look at what happens to women in this country who have ambition and how they’re vilified. Linda’s an idealist and Norma’s a realist. These women of society, even though they had money, still faced all the misogyny and barriers that women have always faced.”

Erica Parise/Courtesy of Apple TV+

“I like to say, nothing is ever wasted in our show. For all the planning you do, there are some decisions that you make along the way and we won’t always know why we did it until much later, and it totally pays off,” Sylvia says. “Case in point, even though Norma paints a really vivid and convincing picture of how they could pin [the shooting] on Maxine, I was sitting in the writers room and I was like, ‘We need one more piece of evidence. It isn’t enough that she invited Nixon to the ball. It isn’t enough that she had been hanging out with Linda in the feminist bookstore in season one. Like, we need a piece of hard evidence.’ And then I realized that the real culprit we had named Mary Davidsoul, and she has the same initials as Maxine. Those little things, you know. It’s like a puzzle sometimes.”

It’s not only Wiig’s accent and diction, familiar to fans of her work on SNL, that gives Palm Royale its comedic sense of heightened reality, “There’s a very sort of singsong rat-a-tatness to our dialogue that heightens the whole series. But we then also have these actors that can play [up the writing] style, but still do it in a really grounded way,” Sylvia says. But writing for the show means also knowing when to pull back, and Sylvia says he empowers the actors to tell him when enough seems like enough. “I had this one line in this scene … I think at the start it was, ‘just a confluence of convenience,’ which seems very fitting for the show,” Sylvia says. “And Carol goes, ‘Now that’s just even too wordy for us.’ And I said, ‘OK, fair enough.’ ”

Erica Parise/Courtesy of Apple TV+

Comparing how this scene plays out to what was written on the page highlights that so much of what the actors do was never written into the character or the script, Sylvia says. “There’s a beautiful moment later in the scene where, for a moment, Linda considers [Norma’s proposition]. And we didn’t put that in the dialogue, that at the last moment, Linda almost goes along with it,” Sylvia says. “But I remember that when we were doing this scene, I went up to Laura, and she’s one of our greatest living actresses, and I said, ‘Why don’t we put in this moment at the end?’ And when you watch the scene, you’ll see for a moment she realizes that Norma is right, that she is going to fry for this. And you just watch it in Laura’s eyes. There’s a passing moment where she goes, ‘Oh, maybe, maybe I will.’ ”

Sylvia and the writers, up to this point, have breadcrumbed distinct mysteries that they lurch into full steam through the dialogue here. For many viewers, it might raise an intrigued eyebrow to hear Norma saying to Linda that being born rich ruined her. “Norma’s had to hustle. Norma wasn’t born rich,” Sylvia says. “Linda doesn’t know that Norma wasn’t born rich. The origin story begins in the finale of season one, and by episode three of season two, more is revealed — or the story we already know, we get to watch play out.”

The Sneaker Color to Wear With Brown Leggings, According to J.Lo

There’s a reason why so many people only wear black leggings. They’re flattering, spill- and sweat-proof, and go with everything, whether that’s a mismatching sports bra, a cool leather jacket, or a bright pair of sneakers. Black leggings are the easy choice, but if you’re interested in branching out like Jennifer Lopez, Allison Brie, and Elsa Hosk have been lately, then brown leggings are a great alternative. They’re just as chic, with the same complimentary traits, and they create a bit of diversity in your leggings collection. Win, win, and win! The only issue is that they’re not quite as versatile when it comes to styling. If you’re going to wear them, I’m here to tell you exactly what sneaker color goes best with brown leggings.

My advice? Take J.Lo’s lead by pairing brown leggings with white sneakers. She was spotted this week arriving at a studio ahead of her workout for the day, wearing a chocolate-brown bra-and-legging set, accompanied by her signature oversized sunglasses, a lighter brown cropped crewneck sweatshirt, and white workout sneakers, as well as matching white socks. Her shoe color choice is key here, because it doesn’t distract from the monochromatic look she put together. Instead, it adds just the right amount of contrast, creating a rich and elegant-looking fitness get-up.

What you wear to work out does make a difference, at least to fashion people like me. I want my fitness attire to feel intentional and put-together, and ensuring that allows me to get up in the morning for pilates or Barry’s, even on those days when moving from bed feels like the last thing I want to do. J.Lo’s brown leggings and white sneakers outfit could be just the pairing you need to tear off your comforter and run to class, and for that alone, I’m buying in.
