How often should you change your air purifier filter

“This video is for people in Delhi and Gurgaon. If you are using air purifiers at home, many people do, but you need to pay attention. Our lungs filter pollutants like PM 2.5, and the filter in the purifier gets blocked. So it’s necessary to change the air purifier filter once every 2–3 weeks,” Dr Sehrawat said.

She added, “If pollution levels are very high, say above 500 AQI, you might even need to change it every 10 days. Also, if you’re going outside frequently, make sure to wear an N95 mask. Cloth masks or the regular blue surgical masks will not protect you from pollutants.”

She explains, “I know that everyone online swears by it, and they’re right that there is some validity to the creatine craze, but only if, and here’s the kicker, you are also doing resistance training twice a week. Multiple randomised control trials have found that creatine can create small but real changes in upper and lower body strength, but only when combined with resistance training.”

The gastroenterologist stresses that if you are not doing enough resistance training, her advice would be to skip creatine supplements entirely. However, she recommends, “If you’re already doing resistance training and you’re at a higher risk of losing muscle mass, like post-menopausal women, people on GLP-1 medications, older people in nursing homes, or maybe you just want a small boost, then it’s totally reasonable to talk to your physician about creatine supplements.”

Dr Pasricha points out, “Some studies have shown that younger adults who supplement with creatine while resistance training can improve their chest and bench press strength by about four pounds. In an Instagram video posted on November 15, the doctor explains how these stimulant-packed beverages impact the heart and, in the worst cases, can even trigger cardiac arrest.

How do energy drinks affect the heart?

Many people reach for energy drinks to get a quick boost from their high caffeine content, but that sudden rush can pose serious risks to the heart in certain individuals. Dr Sood explains, “Drinks like Celsius, Red Bull, and Monster contain high doses of caffeine along with other stimulants such as taurine and guarana. Together, these compounds raise heart rate and blood pressure for hours after you drink them. And in some people, they can disrupt normal heart rhythm.”

He adds that for someone with an underlying or genetic heart condition, this sudden surge in stimulation can trigger dangerous arrhythmias or, in rare cases, even cardiac arrest. Dr Sood highlights, “Experts generally recommend keeping caffeine intake under 400 milligrams per day. That’s about four small cups of coffee. They also recommend avoiding energy drinks entirely if you have any heart rhythm issues or sensitivity to stimulants.”

In a November 4 Instagram post shared by Dr Bing, MD, MPH, a neurologist and biostatistician, he listed three things that he absolutely avoids as a neurologist and recommends others avoid as well. The habits include practices such as wearing headphones for extended periods or to bed, neglecting gum health, and sitting on the toilet for an excessive amount of time. 1. Wearing headphones to bed

Dr Bing cautioned against wearing headphones to bed. Here’s why: “If you are one of those people who wear headphones to bed, just make sure that the sounds that you’re playing are quiet and not loud because loud sounds can damage the hair cells in your inner ear and over time can raise your risk of hearing loss and dementia.”

Moreover, the neurologist emphasised that wearing earbuds and headphones for extended periods can trap moisture and bacteria. This can increase the risk of developing an ear infection.

“If you’re listening to loud sounds during sleep, it might interrupt your deep sleep and disrupt your lymphatic system, which is your brain’s nightly cleaning cycle that cleans out toxins,” he added.

The neurologist cited a 2025 study which found: “People with more gum disease and cavities had almost double the risk of stroke, and other studies have linked poor oral health to dementia and cognitive decline.”

3. Sitting on the toilet for more than 5 minutes

Lastly, the neurologist advised against sitting on the toilet for more than 5 minutes. He divulged, “This is because sitting too long and straining can cause blood to pool in your legs and drop your blood pressure, especially if you have certain underlying conditions, and not enough blood going to your brain can cause someone to faint.”

Unfortunately, the neurologist revealed that he sees such examples almost every week. However, he excused those with chronic bowel disease, as they might not have a choice, but otherwise, he cautioned, “Do not linger on the toilet.”

World Stroke Day 2025: October 29 is observed as World Stroke Day, aimed at raising awareness about stroke prevention, treatment and recovery. On this day of observance, it is crucial to take a closer look at one of the most significant ones: hypertension.

Several studies have been conducted that established hypertension as one of the primary risk factors for stroke. One of the recent study published in Cardiovascular Diabetology in August 2025 further reinforced this link, that when hypertension is combined with elevated stress-related blood sugar levels, stroke risks spike significantly. Hypertension is such a dominant and well-established predictor that newer studies are now combining it with other biological markers to get an even better picture of the stroke risks.

While you are already aware of hypertension, there’s one type of hypertension that is stronger and dangerous, because it stays high even after taking multiple medications.

To understand this type of hypertension, HT Lifestyle reached out to Dr Babu Ezhumalai, senior consultant – interventional cardiology, structural and endovascular interventions cardiology at MGM Healthcare in Chennai. He drew attention to this type of hypertension as it’s ‘stubborn.’ It is called resistant hypertension (RHTN)

What is resistant hypertension?

As per the cardiologist, resistant hypertension is more than ‘regular high blood pressure.’ If high blood pressure is dangerous, then this type takes it up a notch because it usually doesn’t respond to medications as easily.

“Resistant hypertension (RHTN) is a stubborn form where blood pressure stays high even after taking three or more medications, including a diuretic. What makes it especially concerning is its strong link to stroke, a risk many people are unaware of,” Dr Ezhumalai said.

Further, the condition progresses quietly, as the cardiologist added, “By the time warning signs appear, organs like the heart, kidneys, and brain may already be under strain.”

He cited a study from 2023 which found that, compared to patients without resistant hypertension, those with the condition had a 14 per cent higher risk of stroke.

If this type of hypertension is left unchecked, Dr Ezhumalai alerted that the chances of strokes silently increase. “Patients with RHTN are more likely to experience strokes, often without any obvious warning.” Other than stroke, he added, this hypertension also raises the risk of organ damage.

“About 10% of people with high blood pressure may have RHTN. In India, millions may be at risk without realising it, because the condition often shows no symptoms until serious complications occur,” he said, adding that the lack of early warning signs makes consistent monitoring essential.

“RHTN is usually silent. Headaches, dizziness, or nosebleeds may occur only in severe cases. Most damage to the heart, brain, and kidneys happens quietly over time,” the cardiologist described some of the signs.

Management

Resistant Hypertension can be managed with the help of lifestyle adjustments and medical care. Here are 4 key steps Dr Ezhumalai recommended for managing resistant hypertension:

  1. Regular monitoring is essential: Check your blood pressure at home and consider 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) to detect hidden spikes or nocturnal hypertension, both key risk factors for stroke.
  2. Diet: Even stubborn blood pressure can respond to lifestyle changes. Following a DASH diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy, while reducing salt intake, can help lower blood pressure.
  3. Exercise: Regular physical activity, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling, also contributes to better control.
  4. Stress management and quality sleep: Managing stress and getting adequate sleep play an important role, as both help reduce strain on the heart and brain and support overall cardiovascular health.

Sharing the list of 5 morning habits that may be harming your kidneys, Dr Venkatsubramaniam wrote, “Your kidneys work all night to keep you healthy — don’t start your day by making their job harder. Small changes in your morning routine can go a long way in protecting your kidneys.”

1. Drink water before your coffee

Dr Venkatsubramaniam warned against not drinking water in the morning. According to him, after a night of mild dehydration, your body and your kidneys are craving water. “Start your day with at least a glass of water rather than choosing coffee or tea,” he suggested.

2. Don’t hold your pee

The urologist warned that after waking up, one shouldn’t hold their pee for long and immediately empty the bladder in the morning. He explained that after holding urine overnight, our bladder is already stretched and waiting to be released. “Never hold your pee for too long in the morning, and don’t do that throughout the day as well,” he advised.

3. Avoid painkillers on an empty stomach

Thirdly, the urologist advised against taking painkillers on an empty stomach. “Painkillers can harm your kidneys if not taken judiciously, but more so if taken on an empty stomach,” he explained.

4. Rehydrate after exercise

Skipping hydration after intense exercise can be bad for your kidneys. Though morning workouts are an excellent way to energise your day, the urologist advised that it’s equally important to rehydrate after you are done to replenish lost fluids and support recovery.

5. Never skip a healthy breakfast

Lastly, Dr Venkatsubramaniam advised never to skip breakfast. Often, due to our fast-paced lives, we miss eating a healthy breakfast in the morning. However, starting your day with a healthy protein breakfast is always beneficial, the urologist claimed. “By skipping breakfast, one tends to snack on high-salt foods, which are very high in sodium,” he warned.

Chia seeds are everywhere these days, from smoothies to breakfast bowls, everyone seems to be raving about them. Packed with fibre, protein, and omega-3s, they’re often called a superfood. But are they really good for everyone?

Dr Shubham Vatsya, gastroenterologist and hepatologist, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, Delhi, in his October 23 Instagram post, explains why chia seeds might not suit every diet and who should be careful.(Also read: Dehradun gastroenterologist warns you should never depend on ‘tea or coffee’ for morning bowel movements )

“Stop overhyping chia seeds. Certain groups of people need to be extra careful with them,” says Dr Vatsya. He further breaks down who should approach chia seeds with caution:

1. People with high blood pressure

Dr Vatsya points out that chia seeds are rich in potassium and omega-3s, which can affect blood pressure and heart function. Those with high blood pressure should monitor their intake carefully.

2. People on blood thinners

“For people taking medications like aspirin, the omega-3 content in chia seeds can further thin the blood and increase the risk of bleeding,” he explains.

3. Those with digestive issues

According to Dr Vatsya, if you already suffer from bloating, gas, or IBS, chia seeds can worsen stomach cramps and discomfort.

4. Kidney patients

“Chia seeds contain high levels of potassium and phosphorus, which can be harmful for patients with kidney problems. Such individuals should avoid chia seeds completely,” he explains.

Dr Vatsya concludes, “While chia seeds can be beneficial for many, they are not a one-size-fits-all superfood. Knowing your health condition and consulting a doctor can help you enjoy them safely without any risks.”

Celebrity fitness coach Siddhartha Singh, who has trained stars like Tamannaah Bhatia, reveals three popular breakfast options that may seem healthy but are, in fact, among the least nutritious choices. In an Instagram video shared on October 13, the trainer breaks down why these seemingly healthy options fall short nutritionally and recommends smart additions to make them more balanced and nourishing.

Besan cheela

According to Siddhartha, besan cheela tops the list of the worst breakfasts you can have in the morning. He explains, “Lots of people eat besan cheela thinking it’s high-protein. Honestly, it has negligible protein. Secondly, if you’re frying it in ghee and making it crispy, it makes things worse.”

Oats

Contrary to the popular belief that oats are healthy, Siddhartha stresses that, despite being healthy, they are loaded with only carbohydrates. He explains that if you are having only oats for breakfast, without any sources of protein, it will lead to energy crashes and cravings.

Fruits

Fruits are definitely healthy, but they need to be paired with other nutrient-rich sources to balance your meal, especially at breakfast. The fitness coach explains, “Fruits are full of carbohydrates that give rise to a sudden energy rush followed by an energy crash, and you start feeling hungry in half an hour.”

Balanced alternatives

Siddhartha suggests incorporating specific additions to these foods to make them more nutritionally balanced and wholesome.

He recommends adding Greek yoghurt or a scoop of protein to besan cheela, for a balanced breakfast consisting of both proteins and carbs.
