New Report Reveals Trust, ROI, and AI as Defining Issues for the Global Awards Industry in 2025

by jummy84 November 25, 2025
written by jummy84

A new industry study, The Business of Awards: 2025 Industry Insight, reveals that while the global awards sector remains a multi-billion-pound powerhouse, it faces mounting challenges around credibility, return on investment (ROI), and the disruptive role of artificial intelligence (AI).

The report — based on a cross-stakeholder survey of awards organisers, sponsors, entrants, and judges, alongside interviews with leaders from Epica, Arc Europe, the PPA, Arena International, and more — highlights that fewer than half of stakeholders believe judging processes are transparent. Nearly a fifth go further, describing them as opaque.

“Trust is the currency of awards. Without transparent judging and clear separation of sponsorship from results, the commercial model risks collapse,” said Mark Tungate, Editorial Director of the Epica Awards.

Other key findings include:

  • Credibility under scrutiny – Less than half of stakeholders rate judging as transparent; scams and “pay-to-play” perceptions are widespread.
  • ROI pressure – Sponsors cite brand visibility and networking as top objectives, but demand measurable outcomes “beyond the night.”
  • Formats in flux – Almost two-thirds of stakeholders favour in-person awards, with hybrid models a strong secondary preference.
  • AI disruption – Judges are already encountering formulaic, AI-generated entries, raising urgent questions about authenticity.
  • Future growth – Year-round engagement, lifecycle analytics, and international expansion are identified as key opportunities.

“The awards industry is resilient, but long-term success will depend on credibility and proof of value,” said Ben Flight, Arena International. “Sponsors increasingly demand evidence that their investment delivers impact.”

The 50-page report combines survey data with expert commentary from:

  • Mark Tungate (Epica Awards)
  • Sophie Eke (Arc Europe)
  • Sarah Austin (British Business Excellence Awards)
  • Melissa Irving (emap)
  • Hannah Bray (PPA)
  • Helen Wilson (Haymarket Media Group)
  • Paul Schnell (Evessio)
  • Simon Burton (Power 100)
  • Donna O’Toole (August Recognition)

Adam Parry, Co-Founder of Event Industry News and lead editor of the report, said:

“Awards remain a vital part of the events economy — but credibility, innovation, and ROI are now non-negotiable. Our research provides organisers, sponsors, and entrants with a roadmap to navigate the next decade of recognition.”

Music Declares Emergency have launched a new ‘Hope Over Fear’ t-shirt campaign with IDLES, Yard Act, Enter Shikari, Maisie Peters, jasmine 4.t and many more artists.

  • READ MORE: IDLES tell us about “the end of an era” and working on “more driven” new material

In support of their ‘No Music On A Dead Planet’ campaign to establish regional climate hubs across the UK, a host of acts including Sleaford Mods, The Pogues, Editors, Declan McKenna and more will join with the charity to promote the launch by wearing one of three campaign t-shirts and “sharing messages of hope with their fans” throughout November.

The charity partner and Music Venue Trust will see each hub bring fans, artists, and organisers together to create, collaborate, and take action through gigs, workshops and local organising.

The campaign for government action on climate change is spearheaded by three new designs from Anthony Burrill, with profits from the sale of the t-shirts going to “directly fund the creation and maintenance of the groups across the UK & Ireland”.

They can be purchased here from today (November 10).

Lewis Jamieson, CEO of Music Declares Emergency said of the campaign: “Five years since our launch of NO MUSIC ON A DEAD PLANET, a slogan that has come to encapsulate the commitment of artists, music businesses and fans to making a positive contribution to acting on the climate emergency, we felt it was time to bring a new message.

“By bringing our message into towns and cities across the UK through the amazing grassroots venues that are the starting point for so many musical journeys and the creative hubs that underpin UK music, we will strengthen the bonds between music fans, music promoters, and artists who are committed to making a positive difference in their communities. In doing so, we will build a roadmap from declaring an emergency to creating the alternative.”

Mark Davvyd, CEO of The Music Venue Trust added: “Grassroots Music Venues are a fundamental part of their communities and play a key role in bringing people together through music.

“By partnering with Music Declares Emergency for HOPE OVER FEAR, we aim for those venues to be at the centre of an initiative that offers spaces for innovation, discussion and collaboration and celebrates the cultural power of music to bring positive change for the benefit of everyone.”

It comes after WWF and Music Declares Emergency teamed up with huge names from across the music industry to create a new British Isles music nature map earlier this year.

In the past, ‘No Music On A Dead Planet’ has been backed by the likes of Billie Eilish and Foals as well as having shirts designed by Thom Yorke, Joy Division artist Peter Saville and others.

Previously to mark Earth Day and Turn Up The Volume Week, a number of artists spoke out in support in No Music On A Dead Planet’s campaign for government action on climate change.

Savages drummer and Music Declares Emergency co-founder Fay Milton also previously spoke out about the need for the industry as a whole to change its habits to help beat climate change.

Marshall team up with Music Venue Trust to champion 60+ local artists in grassroots venues

by jummy84 November 3, 2025
written by jummy84

Marshall has teamed up with the Music Venue Trust (MVT) to roll out an initiative championing grassroots music – check out all the details below.

In collaboration with MVT, Marshall is set to deliver a nationwide series of more than 20 gigs. Dubbed Marshall Nights, each will shine a spotlight on emerging talent, with the tour featuring over 60 rising artists.

In a bid to support emerging talent as well as the local scenes that support them, performances held at grassroots venues across the country will kick off at Brighton’s Green Door Store, and hit Cardiff’s Fuel, Glasgow’s Rum Shack and Sheffield’s Yellow Arch.

The move builds on Marshall’s history of protecting grassroots music. As highlighted in a press release, Marshall co-founder Terry Marshall and his wife Leslie personally donated £100,000 to support MVT’s ‘Own Our Venues’ campaign, itself an effort to protect local music spaces by bringing them into community ownership.

That year, Marshall also supplied backline equipment to more than 20 grassroots music venues.

Speaking about the Marshall Nights, Denzil Thomas, partnerships manager at MVT, said: “Grassroots Music Venues are the lifeblood of the UK’s music ecosystem, they are where artists take their first steps, and where fans fall in love with live music.

“We’re proud to partner with Marshall, a brand that embodies the sound and spirit of live performance, to keep these vital spaces alive.”

Kevin Penney, Marketing Director at Marshall EMEA went on to add: “Marshall was born from the live stage, and that’s where we belong. Grassroots venues are where every great band starts, and we’re proud to help keep those stages alive for the next generation of artists and fans.

“This isn’t just about sound, it’s about community, creativity, and giving back to the music that made us.”

As well as the live shows, Marshall and MVT will collaborate on a series of live sessions, interviews, and behind-the-scenes content which is set to spotlight the artists, venues, and communities that make up the heart of UK music communities.

For more information about the initiative, you can visit here and here.

The push for change across the industry comes as 2023 proved to be “disastrous” and the worst year on record, with 125 grassroots music venues shutting their doors. At the beginning of the year, it was also reported that 70.6 per cent of independent UK acts have never toured, while 84 per cent of unsigned artists simply can’t afford to.

Back in July, historic venue The Royal Albert Hall became the first 5,000+ capacity arena to commit to the levy – which sees £1 from every ticket sold invested back into the UK’s live music scene and helps smaller venues keep their doors open.

A £1 ticket contribution will now be added to all commercial rock and pop concerts at the Hall. This will raise an estimated £300,000 per annum for the LIVE Trust.

A recent Music Fans’ Voice survey showed that 93 per cent of fans agreed that £1 from every arena and stadium ticket should be donated to support the grassroots, and last spring, a government committee of UK MPs joined the call for a levy on arena and stadium gigs – as well as a cut in VAT.

In December, they pushed for concrete measures to be put in place by the end of 2025, and said that if venues do not volunteer to invest back into the grassroots spaces, the government will take action.

Huge names who have been supportive of a £1 ticket levy include Coldplay, Sam Fender and Katy Perry – who have all vowed to donate a portion of their tour revenues to support the grassroots sector.

In May, Wolf Alice‘s Joff Oddie also joined industry leaders at a government hearing and insisted that not enough progress was being made in saving venues and new artists. Then, the month prior, it was reported that UK tour ticket contributions have raised £500,000 for grassroots music venues thanks to artists like Pulp and Mumford & Sons.

Kelly Moran: Don’t Trust Mirrors Album Review

by jummy84 October 10, 2025
written by jummy84

The record’s five earliest pieces (the first four tracks, plus “Reappearing”) date from 2019 and 2020, when Moran wanted to take the prepared piano to the dancefloor. It’s easy to imagine album opener “Echo in the Field” blasting out over a late-night festival stage: A repeating synth line introduces buzzing bass chords, with the chiming piano carrying a clear melody over the top. Don’t Trust Mirrors isn’t really a dance record, though, and this club-friendly feel disappears quickly as Moran focuses on the timbral character of the prepared piano. “Prism drift” and “Sans sodalis” are built on spacious, ringing harmonics, not likely to move bodies, but to leave them stock-still and blissfully overwhelmed. These versions were later reworked into their more subdued partners, “Hypno” and “Sodalis (II),” for Moves in the Field, and their effect here is like seeing a familiar stage play shot in IMAX, with small, expressive gestures made grandly cinematic.

In the second half of Don’t Trust Mirrors, Moran largely works in the opposite direction, translating those songs written for Disklavier into pieces for prepared piano and synth. These tracks stand out from their originals through textural variety rather than compositional complexity. “Systems,” for example, is recognizable as Moves in the Field’s “Superhuman,” but it finds new force in the prepared piano’s clanging strings. At times, it sounds more like gamelan and with a bit of subtle synth, it becomes quietly sinister. The more variable sound of Moran’s electronics can completely alter a track, too: “Leitmotif,” a delicate little thing that unfurls like a rose petal on Moves in the Field, is big and airy and resonant as “Cathedral,” with tinkling notes spilling into an ambient wash of synth and disappearing in the cavernous distance.

Companion albums are nothing new for Moran, who released the improvisatory rush that became Ultraviolet later, unedited, as the Origin EP. But the relationship between Don’t Trust Mirrors and its predecessor is different, more involved, and ultimately more illuminating: Neither of these albums could exist without the other; neither is a first draft, though they each started where the other left off. Hold them up next to each other and you can see Moran reflected more accurately than in either: a picture of the artist becoming herself.

Sabrina Carpenter advocates for trans rights during MTV VMAs performance: “In trans we trust”

by jummy84 September 8, 2025
written by jummy84

Sabrina Carpenter turned the 2025 MTV VMAs into a huge dance party with her ‘Tears’ performance, which also saw her celebrate and advocate for trans and LGBTQ+ rights – watch the full performance below.

The 2025 MTV VMAs took place last night (September 7) at the UBS Arena in Long Island. A highly anticipated moment of the entire awards show was Sabrina Carpenter’s performance, which lived up to fans’ expectations.

For her performance, she played ‘Tears’, taken off her latest album ‘Man’s Best Friend’. The performance saw the singer appear from underneath a manhole cover to join a slew of drag and trans performers and other dancers onstage.

Throughout the performance, dancers in the background held up hand-drawn signs that read “Protect Trans Rights”, “In Trans We Trust”, “Support Local Drag”, “Love Each Other” and “If You Hate You’ll Never Get Laid” among others. Later on, Carpenter ditched her shimmery top for a dance break that saw sprinklers rain down on her and her dancers, a la Flashdance.

Watch the full performance below.

Elsewhere at the VMAS, Sabrina Carpenter also won Album Of The Year for last year’s ‘Short N’ Sweet’, Pop Artist and Best Visual Effects for her ‘Manchild’ music video. During her acceptance speech for Album Of The Year’, Carpenter doubled down on her support for the queer community, thanking her “queens on stage”.

“This world, as we all know, can be so full of criticism and discrimination and negativity,” she said in her speech. “So to get to be part of something that can bring light, make you smile, make you dance, and make you feel like the world is your fucking oyster. I’m so grateful to do that.”

As for her new album ‘Man’s Best Friend’, that record scored a four-star review from Nick Levine for NME: “Given Carpenter’s fondness for even a dodgy double entendre, it feels fitting to end on one. With ‘Man’s Best Friend’, she’s done more than enough to keep herself on top.”

Elsewhere at the 2025 MTV VMAs, Ariana Grande took home the night’s biggest award, Video Of The Year’ for ‘Brighter Days Ahead’, while Lady Gaga was crowned Artist Of The Year, Rosé and Bruno Mars won Song Of The Year for ‘APT.’ and Mariah Carey was awarded the Video Vanguard award for her historic career. Yungblud and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have also paid tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne with a touching performance. Check out the full list of winners here.

Rick Shelford Decides If He Can Trust Sig Hansen During Team-Up

by jummy84 September 6, 2025
written by jummy84

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Deadliest Catch Season 21]

Rick Shelford explored the mostly desolate Adak Island at the start of the September 5 episode of Deadliest Catch. The Aleutian Lady captain described it as, “about every horror movie you’ve ever seen.” He mentioned there was a plus in the Alaska area in that they have a McDonald’s. Even though Rick said he was more of  a Burger King guy, beggars can’t be choosers. Adak Island served as a military base in the 1940s, but World War II troops pulled out and led to a downturn. It also once became a hotbed for the crab industry. Rick’s grandpa came there at age 12 and became one of the pioneers from the very start.

Discovery Channel

After the nice history lesson, we checked in with Captain Sig Hansen and the Northwestern. The numbers aren’t coming in the way he wanted, which got him thinking about his next course of action. With fuel prices having gone up, time was money. He gave Rick nearby a ring to see what he had going on and to maybe potentially collaborate. Sig got Rick thinking about his grandpa’s spot, which hasn’t really been looked into for a couple of decades. Sophia “Bob” Nielsen questioned if going into a partnership with Sig was a good idea. Rick didn’t trust him, but did like the idea of checking out his old family place on Adak Island. Meanwhile, Sig continued his search for crab. He investigated some valleys on a map and one particular spot in some canyons.

Rick went to the old property where he had to kick the front door open because it didn’t have a handle. He discovered some old clothes and other items, but the big find was a desk. There nearby was a map that Rick thought, “might be something special.” Adding. “This is priceless stuff.”

He went back to his vessel contemplating what to do next. Rick hesitated a bit, but ended up having Sophia take photos of the charts and map information for Sig. Sig saw potential in the gullies with its different depths. Rick immediately had some misgivings. “He is going to screw us on this one I got a feeling,” Rick said. They rendezvous in hopes the risk of fuel, time and trust would pay off. The two captains send pots out in their respective vessels. Their collaboration paid off with pots coming in with around 50 to more than 80 at a time.

Elsewhere, Johnathan Hillstrand had every reason to be in a good mood. The Time Bandit captain had all the crab he needed and readied for delivery. That and the crew witnessed some killer whales nearby. However, they had a tight offload deadline to meet or risk losing hundreds of thousands of dollars in product. There was a snag in his plan when the Coast Guard reached out looking to board, investigate and verify permits. This would severely delay Johnathan as he had to get to the harbor the next day. After the crew was cleared, they used makeshift sails to help shave off some time. As the Time Bandit readied for arrival, big waves and dangerous conditions made it difficult for them to fully make it into the small harbor. Enduring some scary moments, through some skillful maneuvering, they made their deadline. The crew celebrated with what they referred to as a “fisherman’s Christmas.”

Music Venue Trust Distributes Over £100,000 of Sam Fender Fundraising Support to 38 Grassroots Music Venues

by jummy84 September 5, 2025
written by jummy84

Music Venue Trust (MVT), the charity which represents hundreds of UK Grassroots Music Venues (GMVs), has confirmed that funds raised from Sam Fender’s arena tour at the end of 2024 have now been distributed, via its Liveline Fund, to support 38 independent venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The package, worth over £100,000, has provided urgent emergency assistance alongside essential improvement grants, forming a full programme of support that protects, secures, and improves the grassroots ecosystem.

The Liveline Fund was created by Music Venue Trust (MVT) and live music advocates Save Our Scene (SOS) to distribute funding directly to Grassroots Venues, artists and promoters with financial support raised by contributions from arena and stadium ticket sales. Artists including Sam Fender, Katy Perry, Coldplay, and Enter Shikari were early adopters of the Grassroots Levy and have enabled Liveline to begin fuelling the future of UK grassroots music.

A total of 19 venues have been supported through the Emergency Hardship Relief Fund and Emergency Response Team – a lifeline package that steps in to prevent imminent closures. These interventions address urgent challenges such as licensing issues, legal disputes, noise complaints, financial crises, and sudden, unpredictable shocks like floods, fires, or bereavement. Each grant or intervention is tied to a full audit and support process to ensure long-term sustainability. This proactive work directly prevents closures and stops venues from falling into crisis, ensuring viable grassroots spaces remain open.

Alongside this, a further 19 venues received over £50,000 in direct improvement grants, enabling upgrades to facilities, technical equipment, and infrastructure that directly benefit artists, staff, and audiences.

Sam Fender said “It’s brilliant to see that the money raised from the arena tour is making a real difference to so many venues. The grassroots circuit has been decimated over the last 10 years or so and the idea that money from shows in big venues supports the smaller venues, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense. These places are legendary.”

The impact is being felt across England, Scotland, and Wales. Venues to receive funding include Stereo, Sub Club, Paper Dress Vintage, The Hunter Club, The White Hotel, The Strines Nightingale, Spanners, The Garibaldi Hotel, Moor Beer Vaults, Slay Glasgow, Hippos, Ashburton Arts Centre, Clwb Ifor Bach, Newhampton Arts Centre, The Verdict, The Peer Hat, and venues based in the North East like Little Buildings, NE Volume Music Bar & Venue, and The Globe.

In Bury St Edmunds, The Hunter Club called the support “a game-changer”, explaining that it empowers them to provide a better experience for artists and audiences while continuing to nurture the next generation of musicians.

In London, Paper Dress Vintage highlighted the importance of resilience: “Our trade relies on us being able to put on music and our mixing desk, which was irreparably damaged recently, is absolutely central to all this activity. Having this new, protected system in place will make us more resilient and protect us from future damage and loss of earnings.”

Manchester’s The White Hotel pointed to the stark financial pressures faced by independent cultural spaces: “The increased cost of running a hospitality business, especially one that prioritises art and culture, is increasingly difficult. This financial support is vital to us.”

In Cardiff, Clwb Ifor Bach said the grant has resolved a critical technical issue: “This funding means we finally have our main room back up to the standard we expect of ourselves for the artists who visit our venue.”

And in Glasgow, the iconic Sub Club explained how support from the Liveline Fund has been transformative: “It allowed us to do much needed repairs and upgrades to our ‘Body Sonic’ dance floor, upgrading the amps and servicing the entire floor system. This provides an intense dance floor experience for our patrons that’s unmatched anywhere else in Scotland and we believe is an integral part of the Subbie experience.”

Mark Davyd, CEO, MVT commented “This remarkable contribution from Sam Fender, his management, and his team has created a real and lasting impact on the grassroots music ecosystem. These venues are the places where artists like Sam take their first steps, where local communities come together, and where live music truly begins. By investing directly into their future, we are strengthening the entire live music sector.”

This initiative underscores how funds raised from arena and stadium events can play a pivotal role in sustaining the grassroots infrastructure that underpins the UK’s world-renowned live music industry. MVT’s Annual Report 2024 revealed that, on average, GMVs operated on a profit margin of just 0.48% with 43.8% of them reporting a loss in the previous 12 months.

‘Trust Broken Long Ago’: Dhanashree Verma Takes Dig At Yuzvendra Chahal In Ashneer Grover’s New Show

by jummy84 August 25, 2025
written by jummy84

Entrepreneur Ashneer Grover is set to host a new reality show, Rise & Fall, and a recent promo has already created a buzz. The teaser, released on Amazon MX Player, features contestant Dhanashree Verma taking a veiled jab at her ex-husband, cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal.

The promo introduces the show’s concept, where contestants are divided into two distinct groups: Rulers and Workers. It also shows some of the celebrity participants, including Arjun Bijlani, Kubbra Sait, Kiku Sharda, and Dhanashree. The drama kicks into gear when Kiku mentions the word “trust.” The camera immediately pans to Dhanashree, who throws a ball and says, “Trust toh mera bahut pehle hi toott chuka tha” (My trust was broken a long time ago).

The comment is a clear reference to her recent, and very public, divorce from Yuzvendra Chahal, which was finalized in March of this year. The couple’s separation was filled with controversy and allegations, with both parties sharing cryptic social media posts and making shocking revelations in podcasts.

A Game of Power and Survival

The teaser highlights the show’s premise of a cutthroat power struggle. The Rulers are shown living a luxurious life in a penthouse, while the Workers are confined to a minimal basement. The show’s tagline, “16 contestants. Two worlds. One ultimate power struggle,” perfectly encapsulates the core theme.

According to the official caption, the show promises a “daily dose of dhoka, dhamaka aur drama” as contestants form alliances and fight to rise to the top. The game begins when the Workers try to unseat the Rulers.

Rise & Fall is set to premiere on September 6, with new episodes streaming daily and for free on Amazon MX Player.
