Prop Store’s  Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction Sells Dark Side

by jummy84 September 3, 2025
written by jummy84

There has to be a truly exceptional reason to get anyone, including anyone on the IndieWire staff, to walk into the Times Square Planet Hollywood at 10 a.m. on a Tuesday. In fairness, Planet Hollywoods do tend to have fun movie memorabilia or replica props as part of their decor; the restaurant’s themed focus on filmmaking from the ‘90s onwards has, in its own way, raised an awareness of production design and costumes as items of value and not just souvenirs for cast and crew.

But on this particular Tuesday at 10 a.m., the third floor of New York’s Planet Hollywood had millions of dollars worth of film rarities displayed under museum-grade glass, with glossy catalogues authenticating the provenance of an original stormtrooper helmet, a belt and bullwhip used in “The Last Crusade,” Picard’s Ressikan Flute from “Star Trek: The Next Generation” episode “The Inner Light,” and the lightsaber used in Darth Vader’s dueling sequences (and therefore wielded by the late, legendary fight coordinator Bob Anderson) in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “The Return of the Jedi.”

'Dead Man's Wire'

Darth Vader, Indiana Jones, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard certainly constitute a “return to office” exception.

The Planet Hollywood display was presented by Prop Store which, since 1998, has been an auction house specifically for film and television memorabilia; the company runs live auctions of over 1,000 lots three times a year. They’re always trying to spread the word beyond their coterie of regular collectors, but it says something for them to be so hyped that they’re willing to hand-carry lightsabers and stick “Men in Black” neuralyzers in an overhead compartment on the flight from LA to New York to market their September 4-6 live auction.

What’s striking about Prop Store’s work — at least to this civilian IndieWire staffer who has never won a live auction bid on eBay — is just how methodically each item is documented and vetted, even sometimes restored. Staff do what COO Brandon Alinger called “screen matches,” where they go through films frame-by-frame in 4K (or even higher resolutions) in order to spot individual scratches and characteristics of props, and separate the genuine articles from inauthentic replicas (and the odd Halloween mask).

The Darth Vader combat lightsaber, for instance, was X-rayed in order to determine that the steel rod, which was used for fight sequences (the sinister red “light” and sound effects were added in after the fact, of course) was indeed assembled in the correct way. The catalogues detailing all of Prop Store’s work are full of pull quotes from the filmmakers, stills from the films, references to other props and inspirations, in addition to meticulous photos of each prop available to bid on. It all looks identical to the material one would find in a fine art auction.

Just like the art world, Alinger told IndieWire that the company does have a lot of “regulars” who are consistently interested in film memorabilia as a whole, or in specific genres/franchises. Occasionally, museums will work with benefactors to put up bids for their collections. But they’re always trying to reach more fans.

The allure of movies and the consolidation of Internet fandoms had deepened the value of the marquee franchise and blockbuster items Prop Store tends to auction. While Alinger would expect items from the original “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” films to be highly prized — they’ve had 40-50 years to appreciate — newer franchise items are just as sought-after, “especially Marvel,” Alinger said.

No doubt there is a cinema and cultural studies thesis to be written about why that is; but it is sufficient for this article’s purposes to say that it’s a mindfuck to stare at a weathered, metal cylinder with a rod sticking out, its black paint slightly peeling, and know that you’re looking at something someone is about to spend possibly millions of dollars to own.

But one also thinks of Ralph McQuarrie, who did the original concept work on the lightsabers, or “Star Wars” set designer and prop maker Roger Christian, and how they must feel, knowing their work has gone on to become, as Alinger put it, “the Ruby Slippers” of their generation of cinema.

George Lucas is probably fine. But Alinger has never seen fans so excited for something.

“Out of anything we’ve handled here at Prop Store, I would say that lightsaber has the potential to reach the highest sale price. But it’s also generated the most response, the most interest from fans,” Alinger said. “We’ve had so many people reaching out to us and saying, ‘I can’t believe you have this,’ or people want to come and attend these in-person previews like the one we’re at now. It’s just something that people have gotten very excited about.”

It will likely be later in the first day of the live auction, sometime on September 4, when Darth Vader’s dueling lightsaber will go up onto the virtual block. Anyone can sign up to bid or simply to watch Prop Store’s live auctions, which take place at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

Everything I Packed to Live Out of a Suitcase for a Year

by jummy84 August 29, 2025
written by jummy84

The decision to travel for a year came easily. After sorting out the logistics of subletting my NYC apartment, tossing superfluous possessions in storage, and lining up sufficient freelance remote work, my administrative ducks were in a row. But packing for a year of travel? Easy is not the term I’d employ to describe the endeavor. How does one even go about pulling together a capsule wardrobe for such an extensive amount of time away from home? The very notion seemed humorously ambitious.

The one thing I had going for me was that I orchestrated my travel plans in such a way that I’d circumvent winter all together. My first stop was Los Angeles, onward to Hawaii and New Zealand, a few months in southeast Asia, a pitstop over in India and South Africa, then late spring and early summer in Europe. Evading cold weather meant lighter layers, and thus, lighter luggage. But that still did not resolve the issue of what to pack.

At the behest of my husband, I resisted the urge to bring multiple massive suitcases and settled on one trunk and one carry-on. Unlike him, I do not worship at the altar of minimalism, but a simplified approach turned out to be necessary for maneuvering around airports, train stations, and ferries. Neutral colors and classic silhouettes I wouldn’t tire of formed the basis of my travel uniform—with a couple of dopamine-inducing accessories and statement pieces thrown in for sanity’s sake. I permitted myself a few different handbag and footwear options to adjust to various occasions, all neatly corralled with packing cubes and various organizers.

Nearly one full year and eight countries later, what I’ve learned is that a ruthless packing list is the secret to a trip’s success. If you have everything you need (nothing more, nothing less) assembled in a tidy environment, it leaves more time to be present on your journey. Don’t get me wrong: There were days when I wanted to light my suitcase ablaze and kick it into the river, and others when I was pleased with a polished look I managed to cobble together. But rarely is the outfit the best part of an adventure, anyway.

So, if you’re embarking on a similarly long-haul sojourn, the items below—from luggage necessities to wardrobe heroes—all deserve a spot on your packing list.

My Trip MVPs

The Trunk

Chief among the best packing decisions I made was choosing a travel trunk, instead of just a large checked bag (or two). I’ve always admired this romantic relic from 19th-century steamship or train journeys—but nostalgia for the Golden Age of Travel aside, the elongated shape and deep compartments made living out of my suitcase way less of a headache. My trunk of choice is from Paravel and sadly no longer available, but there are several options on the market, from heritage brands to DTC favorites like Away.

The Packing Cubes (with Labels!)

While the use of packing cubes is by no means revolutionary, one detail that transformed my experience was utilizing labels for each cube. I had different ones designated for undergarments, dresses, activewear, and so on—which made it easy to grab the specific item I was looking for without wrecking the homeostasis of my suitcase.

The Passport Holder

I have never lost my passport before… but I can imagine it isn’t pleasant. To avoid having to track down my nearest embassy, I enlisted a holder to neatly hold my passport, foreign currency, and boarding passes. I used the “Airport Dad” passport case by Clare V. X Jimmy Kimmel, which promptly sold out upon release, but any well-made holder should do the trick.

Bottega Veneta

The Jewelry Case

It’s true what they say about accessories: They can revolutionize a tired wardrobe. Going into this trip, I knew I’d be relying on my earrings and necklaces more than usual, and therefore brought along a larger organizer that kept everything detangled and easy to access.

The Go-With-Everything Tote

When you’re traveling in warm climates and need a bag that can translate to an airplane as easily as it can to evening cocktails, a woven tote is a trusty option. I prefer leather iterations, as they’re more durable; size-wise, I gravitated towards something that could fit my MacBook Air, but wasn’t so large that it felt like a commuter bag.

The Cosmetics Organizer

Coming from someone who doesn’t wear a lot of make-up even I’m surprised to include this one, but my cosmetics organizer was among my most valuable items that I packed. Unlike a simple make-up bag that jumbles everything together, having a case with specific spots for my various brushes and products was a little luxury that went a long way.

The Just-In-Case Sweater

I am a knitwear fanatic, so selecting just one sweater to pack for a year was torture. But this black, oversized cable knit from Soft Goat was a godsend. It was slouchy enough to layer over just about anything, and easy to knot around my shoulders or waist on days when the weather was a little iffy.

The Crisp White Button-Up

I will espouse the joys of a crisp white button-up shirt no matter where in the world I am, but when you’re on the road, a classic piece like this really hits its stride. It’s on regular rotation in my airplane uniform, and is a favorite layer for pairing with silk pajama pants and printed skirts.

The Pull-On Breezy Pants

I somehow only packed one pair of jeans for my entire trip—and it was A-okay! Instead, I relied on breezy linen pants, most of which were designed with a relaxed, pull-on waistline (plus, the lighter material is easier to roll up and pack than rigid denim).

The Throw-On-and-Go Dress

When you’re working with a limited rotation of clothing, it’s important to have staples you can throw on and feel instantly good in—like an effortless dress. I had one custom made when I was in Vietnam (a common practice in the country!) and proceeded to wear it the duration of my trip.

My Surprising Pick-Me-Ups

The Personality Sneakers

I am not one to impulse buy, but a week before I left for my trip I panic-purchased these Toteme sneakers. Thankfully, a year later I can safely say I made the right decision. While a classic Nike or Adidas option is always a fine choice, the suede texture on these sneakers gave them a unique touch that, in turn, had me reaching for them more often.

Dries Van Noten

The Full-Size Fragrance

Hear me out: if you are traveling for an extended period of time, bring a full-size fragrance. While mini sizes are smart for shorter getaways, there’s something so indulgent about spritzing on perfume from a larger bottle. Plus, anytime you smell that scent it’ll take you right back to your trip. (Trudon’s Isla will always hold a special place in my heart!)

Trudon

Isla de Oro eau de parfum

The Elegant Dress

I brought along a navy silk kaftan with delicate embroidery that ended up being my go-to any time we had a fancier meal or excursion, which took the stress out of dressing for a formal occasion. You don’t need to pack a plethora of occasion pieces, but one really elegant dress is worth the space in your suitcase.

The Sunglasses

What can make a repeat outfit less banal? A pair of statement sunglasses, that’s what. It’s a small detail, but one that will be in all of your photos taken outdoors during the day, so choose wisely (personally, my preference is for lightly tinted lenses).

The Sleek Flip Flops

The footwear I ended up wearing the most were my simple, fuss-free flip flops. They’re the perfect finish to a slouchy trouser with a pooled hem, and easy to style up or down depending on the occasion.

My Packing Regrets

The Cable Organizer

On more than one occasion, my assorted cords and charging cubes resembled a tangle of noodles at the bottom of my travel bag. Word to the wise: Investing in a tech organizer is investing in your mental health.

The Lightweight Weekender

I bought a leather weekender from Cuyana for the airplane and any quick side trips—but while the bag was beautiful, the weight and size weren’t conducive to my unique circumstances. If you’re traveling for several weeks or months at a time, a smaller and lighter tote or duffel is the safer option for a personal item.

The Suitcase Cover

Unsurprisingly, after a year of luggage carousels, car trunks, and countless wheel mileage, my suitcases are riddled with scratches. If I could go back and do it all over again, I’d get a cover.

bitchy | People: Prince George needs Forest Lodge to live ‘as normal a life as possible’

by jummy84 August 28, 2025
written by jummy84

People Magazine’s cover story this week is Prince George at 12: The Boy Who Will Be King. This perhaps would have been more fitting on or around his twelfth birthday more than a month ago, but I think the timing suggests that Kensington Palace understands that the Forest Lodge news landed poorly. This is their pivot: see, Prince William and Kate are so focused on the best way to raise the heir, look at what a normal kid he is, see, that’s our REAL job! I also doubt that People Mag would have felt empowered to put a literal child on their cover unless they got the nod (if not explicit permission) from Kensington Palace. Well, enjoy some highlights about “the boy who will be king.” This actually made me feel sorry for George, btw.

George met veterans on VE Day: “This was the first sign of George taking on future duties,” Russell Myers of The Mirror tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “Even though he is so young, he seems to have grown in confidence over the last couple of years.” For observers, the moment highlighted how William and Kate, both 43, have been carefully preparing their eldest son for the throne. “It’s a slow game, and it gets him used to it on the couple’s terms rather than anybody else’s,” a palace insider says.

George is serious: “He comes across as a serious chap,” the insider adds. “To have the world’s eyes on you, especially when you’re so young, is demanding.” Yet those who know him well say he also has a playful streak.

He does the right things: “He does the right things at the right moment, as any 12-year-old would—and that’s all that matters,” says a source close to the palace.

George has never been to boarding schools: Following a summer in which his mother has been regaining strength nearly a year after chemotherapy, George is returning to Lambrook School in September for his final year alongside Charlotte and Louis. Unlike previous heirs, he has always attended coed day schools. “That chimes with William wanting to do things in a more modern way, putting all three children in the same school,” says royal author Sally Bedell Smith. “It’s a new direction — groundbreaking for the royal family.”

But will he go to Eton next year? But a pivotal decision lies ahead: where he will continue his education next year. For most royal watchers, Eton College — the all-boys boarding school where William thrived — is the front-runner, conveniently close to the family’s new home, Forest Lodge, in Windsor Great Park, where they plan to settle by year’s end.

Forest Lodge is important to George!! William and Kate have anchored themselves in Windsor, determined to give their children as normal a life as possible. At Forest Lodge, they plan to maintain the routines that matter most: school drop-offs and pickups, sports games and everyday family moments — all without live-in staff.

The importance of the Middletons: George’s home life mirrors the happy country-centered childhood Kate enjoyed. Living just 30 minutes away, Kate’s hands-on parents, Carole and Michael, play an unusually prominent role in shaping the life of a future King. “Kate’s family has set the pace, and William has been very happy to take the lead from them,” says royal author Robert Lacey. “Many decisions they’ve made echo Middleton decisions.”

What happens if King Charles passes in the next few years: With King Charles, 76, still undergoing treatment for an undisclosed cancer, questions about the future are inevitable. If George becomes heir to the throne before finishing school, any bestowal of the title Prince of Wales may be delayed by William. “They would want him to focus on having freedom before giving him any royal titles,” the insider says. Adds Lacey: “I imagine that when William talks to George about things like this, he uses words like ‘destiny’ rather than ‘duty.’ ‘Duty’ has a sense of being trapped; ‘destiny’ has a sense of choice.”

A normal kid: “He is the most normal 12-year-old future monarch we have ever had,” says the close palace insider. “And that is a very good thing.”

[From People]

I actually think Sweden’s Princess Estelle is probably the most “normal” yet prepared future monarch – Estelle’s parents seem to be doing a great job of letting her be a kid, but also preparing her for her future role, and including her on all kinds of state events. As for George… this piece absolutely felt like George’s parents using him as a human deflection shield when they got bad press for the Forest Lodge move. The explicit mention of Forest Lodge as part of George’s “normal” life says it all (to me). Yeah, I do feel sorry for those kids.

Earl Sweatshirt: Live Laugh Love Album Review

If IDLSIDGO became known as the Earl is sad album, there might be a tendency to label Live Laugh Love the Earl is happy now album, but it’s more complex than that. His excitement for marriage and fatherhood has the all too real fear of What if I fuck it all up? and yet, with the comic timing of a long-winded standup, he gets out of his own head with jokes. On “exhaust,” that comes in the form of taking a break from all of the personal meditations with a play on an old 2 Chainz hook: “Ya love stank bitches that’s your fuckin’ problem.” While on “Crisco,” Earl digs into the childhood anger that’s still affecting him to this day, but just before that, he declares, “Get these white girls out my home like Babyfather.” Dr. Umar would be proud.

The way his flow has become a lot more loose and unpredictable helps him draw out certain emotions, too. In the final few moments of “Static,” the disgusted pause he takes before he says “It didn’t shock me” turns some seemingly ordinary shit talk into a devastatingly funny lecture, in a DOOM kind of way. Speaking of DOOM, Earl still has a splash of the masked villain in his cadence, but mixed in with so many contemporary references done with his own flavor. When he spouts out, “Affogato cream and coffee, wally walker out the bottle drinkin’, I never got on LinkedIn” on “Heavy Metal aka ejecto seato!,” the sensible gibberish reminds me of California street rap, specifically the first few bars of WhoHeem’s “Dum Hands.” Also, “Live,” where over a Black Noi$e beat that is like haunted Backwoodz vibes meets sputtering StepTeam drums, Earl slurs his words almost as hard as Veeze. And not for no reason, that flow makes the song sound so deeply insular.

It’s a lot. Live Laugh Love is equal parts heart and style, and is as much about Earl the grown man as Earl the hip-hop head. Earl shouts out friends, blots the album with relationship details that maybe only a few other people in the world would fully comprehend, and brings up his emotional bond with his son. These are his touchpoints, so it makes sense that everything else—the word-association marathons, the flowery punchlines—seems like an inconsequential blur. There are a few moments that ground it all even further: the dream he mentions on “Heavy Metal aka ejecto seato!” that he had years before his son was born, in which the baby was walking on the ceiling; on “Tourmaline,” the best song on the album, when in a romantically woozy rap-sing he goes, “She found me on the streets, she vowin’ to keep my feet grounded for my sweet child” so earnestly. There’s so much musical and personal inspiration colliding at once, you can feel the passion even when you can’t quite crack it all.
