These Are the Best Timeless Staples from London Label Aligne

I used to live in East London for two years, so all things British will always hold a special place in my heart—especially the fashion. It’s where I first started out in the industry, and London Fashion Week remains my favorite on the fashion month calendar. From household names like Burberry to emerging designers from Central Saint Martins, there’s something I love about what’s happening across the pond.

Lately, our editors have been talking about Aligne. I first heard of the brand when a few people on our team were chatting about it’s now stocked on Nordstrom, Shopbop, and Anthropologie. Outside our office, the label has gone viral on TikTok as well—especially its polished fitted jackets.

Here’s a roundup of the timeless staples I found while browsing their website.

A classic black wool coat is a staple in my fall wardrobe.

Aligne LB Blair Mohair Jumper.

Believe it or not, technicolor is back. This less-than-$200 mohair sweater immediately reminded me of the Fall/Winter 2025 runway trend.

I like how this merino wool-cotton blend cardigan is a heavier weight for fall and winter.

You could layer it over this top as well.

A Week In Brooklyn On A $220,000 Joint Income

Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?
Yes, college was always expected. I come from an immigrant family, and everything my parents did was to set my siblings and myself up for a future. I was a high-achieving student at a competitive public school, and attended a top state university. My parents participated in a 529 plan and pre-purchased my in-state tuition when I was around 8 years old, making it considerably inexpensive. I believe they paid $22,000 for all four years, which I was extremely grateful for.

Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent(s) educate you about finances?
We were middle class but my parents were very frugal, since they both grew up poor in their home countries. Since arriving in the US, it’s always been very important for them to have a great credit score, so they never missed a payment and saved every penny. We hardly ever ate out and only went on a vacation maybe every other year. However, my mom was also able to retire early, and I know they will also leave a comfortable inheritance for my sibling and myself.

What was your first job and why did you get it?
My first job was a hostess at a restaurant when I was 15. I mainly got the job to start earning pocket money for myself. I worked for a few years in the restaurant industry throughout high school and saved enough to buy a used car (my parents’ old car), as well as for a solo trip to Europe when I turned 18 and graduated. I had only been to Canada and Mexico previously.

Did you worry about money growing up?
A bit: we could afford all the essentials but never had “fun” money. I got used to shopping for things on sale or thrifting, which is something I still carry with me to this day. There were lots of times in high school when I would wish we had money to buy the trendy things I saw other girls wearing. I do remember one time in elementary school, we were going on a “Little House on the Prairie” field trip, and we had to buy these old-fashioned costumes, but they were pricey and my mom couldn’t afford them. I tried to tell the teacher I was going to skip the field trip but she insisted on it. We ended up finding something at Goodwill, even though it was not the exact style. However, I’m glad my parents instilled a frugality mindset in me now, because it helps me budget an average salary in an expensive city.

Do you worry about money now?
Yes, more so now. Even though I can split expenses with my partner A., we are both victims of lifestyle creep from time to time. Most of our disposable income goes towards going out, eating out, and traveling. I admit I do also have a bit of a shopping problem (especially working in fashion!) which has accumulated a bit of credit card debt.

At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?
At 22, when I graduated. I worked part time throughout college but my parents still helped out with certain things like my car insurance. I don’t have a financial safety net right now, which is something I am going to work towards once I pay off my credit cards. Technically, I could use my 401(k) in an emergency, and both A. and I have supportive parents who would help us out if absolutely needed. But I prefer to be independent and have my own funds.

Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain.
Yes, last year my parents started my Roth IRA and contribute the max $7,000 every year, as I did not want to contribute beyond my 401(k). This is partially a hobby of my mother’s, who has been playing with the stock market since she retired early. She likes to “play” with my retirement money but will give any earnings to me. Win-win.

Forget a pop of red—why not splash yourself in the color? This tomato-red outfit is on the louder side, sure, but it’s perfect for days in the city or vacations to cold-weather climates, environments where you want to stand out from the crowd. While we love this dramatic hue, it also works for any other shade; fall’s color trends include chocolate brown and rich purple, by the way.

Through a miracle of styling, the down vest here is actually the most fitted part of the look, and we’re obsessed with the effect. On top of providing a little more warmth on frigid days, oversized sweaters and trousers are also especially on-trend right now. (It’s a great excuse to stay comfy, toasty, and current during your next outdoor adventure.) Plus, these two pieces would look great together with or without an extra layer.

Why Do We Get So Attached To Fictional Characters?

Why Do We Get So Attached To Fictional Characters?

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

The Summer I Turned Pretty (TSITP) fever has swept across the world, and viewers of all ages are incredibly invested in Jenny Han’s YA drama. There’s something about a combination of dreamy summer Cousins Beach and extreme teenage angst that becomes irresistible. But why do fictional characters draw us in so much? For some people, they may not understand why fans get to the point where they’re fighting over pomegranate margaritas about whether Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah is the right choice for Belly.

Carly Dober, principal psychologist at Enriching Lives Psychology, tells Refinery29 Australia that teenage stories can evoke emotions that we love to cling to. “Most people can clearly recall their teenage years where the highs were very high and the lows were very low due to the hormonal peaks and troughs of adolescence and early adulthood,” Dober says. “It also makes us feel nostalgic for when things felt easier, as for some, retrospectively, their lives became far more complex in their adult years.”

The love triangle and heavily character-driven plot of The Summer I Turned Pretty also prove addictive, as fans drink up the drama and intrigue. “A love triangle [may leave] us deeply curious and rooting for particular people. Often, people find that who they are rooting for in the love triangle may change throughout a series,” Dober notes. “People can become heavily invested in characters, their stories, and what this represents to them. Maybe someone has been in the character’s shoes before, and we also align our identities with how we want to be seen, and what traits or behaviours we find permissible.”

We also align our identities wtih how we want to be seen, and what traits or behaviours we find permissible.

Carly Dober, Psychologist

Karen-Dill-Shackleford, PhD, a media psychologist based in Santa Barbara, CA, also says it’s natural to find these characters important. She explains that because storytelling is a way to touch on ideas that are important to us, connecting to a story and its characters is important — and often, we might even feel more empathy for a story than we do for things and people in our daily lives.

Dr. Dill-Shackleford describes our relationships to characters as parasocial relationships, or one-sided relationships that we have with the media that we consume. Even if a character can’t talk back to you or otherwise engage with you, it makes sense that if you get home at night and spend an hour or two (or more, we don’t judge) watching a TV show, you might get really attached to them because they bring you joy or cheer you up after a rough day. And feeling so much affection for these characters could be a sign that you’re capable of a lot of empathy. “You have to engage in a real human way in order to feel that connection,” Dr. Dill-Shackleford says. “That’s probably a sign that you are capable of certain social things that you are willing to let yourself go and really feel something in the story.”

There’s not a lot of hard science out there to explain why some people tend to be incredibly passionate fans while others are more casual (i.e., Westworld Reddit theorists vs. people who prefer to just watch the show and let it unfold), but Debra Kissen, PhD, a member of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, says it might have something to do with how deeply we probe into things in our lives in general.

You have to engage in a real human way in order to feel that connection.

Karen Dill-Shackleford, PhD

“People who have more of a tendency to dive deep into things might have more of a tendency to be specialists and dive deep while others take more of a wide view,” she says. “Part of that would then show up in anything you do — you do it fully and thoroughly.” But even if you’re not the all-or-nothing type, Dr. Dill-Shackleford says that characters are often avatars for us, and we let ourselves feel feelings through them even if we can’t relate to everything they’re going through.

That attachment and parasocial relationship can also happen with celebrities, who, in a way, are arguably fictional characters to us: We know the image they present in public, which may or may not 100% align with who they really are, and we guess at the rest. “[With] someone who you’ve followed over a career or long periods of your life, you do feel like you know them,” Dr. Dill-Shackleford says. “You see them in these intimate situations and they’re probably already a beautiful person because they’re an actor, and they’re compelling.”

And, well, the power of attraction is strong. “You can’t underestimate the fact that these stars are very attractive,” she adds. “Most people, unless you live in Hollywood or something, you don’t see that level of physical attractiveness. Like Chris Hemsworth, he’s like a god. So of course it’s a biological cue to us, we’re supposed to find someone to mate with, and it’s a message to us that this person is really valuable because they’re that attractive.”

So it’s normal to be extremely attached to a fictional character or celebrity, so long as it doesn’t become an obsession that takes over your life. If, say, you spend so long thinking about Chris Hemsworth that you’re not dating anyone else because of that attraction, that’s when it might be unhealthy. For the most part, though, Dr. Dill-Shackleford says that most people probably aren’t obsessed to that degree.

This article was originally published in 2018 and has been updated.

Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

How to Dye Hair at Home, According to Professional Colorists

How to Dye Hair at Home, According to Professional Colorists

by jummy84 September 26, 2025
written by jummy84

First of all, let’s get one thing straight: Dyeing your hair more than one or two shades lighter at home is risky business. “If you’re going for a dramatic hair transformation, it’s best to leave this to a professional,” says celebrity colorist Marie Robinson, who is famous for her impeccably beautiful platinum blondes. “Otherwise you risk seriously damaging your hair.”

However, if you’re already blonde and you want to go a little lighter, it can be achieved at home. (Brunettes and redheads, get thee to a salon!)

You’ll need:

Estimated time to complete:

Two and a half hours

Step 1

Before you do anything, follow the first three steps listed in the Allover Color section, above. Then, starting at the back of your head and working forward, apply the solution, keeping it one inch away from your roots. Massage the color in so every strand is covered.

Step 2

Let it sit for 20 to 30 minutes, but check the progress every five to 10. “Don’t be alarmed if you see a tinge of red; hair exposes in stages as it lightens,” says Robinson.

Step 3

After 30 minutes, apply the rest of the solution onto your roots, and wait for an additional 10 to 30 minutes, depending on how light you’re going.

Step 4

Rinse a strand above your ear and gently pull on it to make sure it doesn’t break. If it does, rinse your hair immediately and follow with a protein mask or bond repair product like Olaplex. If your hair still has a golden tint, leave the dye on for 10 more minutes, Robinson advises. If the color looks good, rinse with warm water, then shampoo your hair and condition.

Garnier Nutrisse Ultra Color Lightening Creme

Olaplex Hair Perfector No 3 Repairing Treatment

What to do if you hate your new hair color

Fret not: Here are some ideas for how to fix (or at least improve) every color mishap. The things you’ll need on hand: a clarifying shampoo, a conditioning mask, and a few pantry goods.

If your hair is too dark…

“Wash it immediately,” says celebrity colorist Jennifer J. If it’s far too dark, mix a tablespoon of baking soda (which acts as a mild detergent) with a clarifying shampoo and let the solution sit on wet hair for five minutes. Or apply olive oil to damp hair, wrap it all up in a shower cap, and place a hot towel over it. “The heat opens up the cuticle just enough to let a few dye molecules slip out,” she says; follow with your regular shampoo ASAP.

If it’s too light…

You’re going to have to add more dye. For hair that’s just a little too pale, choose the next shade darker than the one you started with, and apply it only on the areas you think are too faint, Jennifer recommends. Leave the color on for half the time indicated on the box, and keep checking to make sure it doesn’t go too far. If hair is way too light, see a pro.

If it’s brassy…

You’ll need to tone down your hair’s warm tint. If you used semipermanent dye, try a lavender-hue shampoo (like Clairol Professional Shimmer Lights Shampoo) for the next few days, says Robinson. If you went with a permanent formula, paint a shade that’s two tones darker just on the orangey spots. Next time, go for cooler tones with a blue base.

If it turned green from dyeing (or it was exposed to chlorine)…

Try washing the tint out with a clarifying shampoo or a deep treatment mask like Matrix Biolage HydraSource Deep Treatment Hair Mask right away. If that doesn’t do the trick, rinse hair with ketchup. The red counteracts the green, and the acidity helps neutralize the reaction. Then make sure to study up on how to protect your color before jumping into the pool.
