A Week In Santa Clara, CA On A $150,000 Salary

Was there an expectation for you to attend higher education? Did you participate in any form of higher education? If yes, how did you pay for it?
Both my parents attended college, chose STEM majors, and graduated top of their class. It was expected that I would do the same. I majored in computer science at a well-respected university in the field. I also received a merit scholarship that covered my entire tuition for all of my years in college. I only had to cover rent and food. For my first year, my parents gave me money to cover these living expenses. During my second year, I worked a part-time job as a software engineer intern and used that income to cover living expenses. I kept this part-time through the remainder of college.

Growing up, what kind of conversations did you have about money? Did your parent(s) educate you about finances?
Growing up, my parents spoke about spending habits and the importance of saving. We lived extremely frugal lives and tried to save as much money as we could. For example, nearly all my clothes were bought second-hand, and we tuned our diet for the week based on what was on sale at the grocery store. Still, we were never worried about money. My parents made it clear that our frugal lifestyle was not because we lacked money, but rather we wanted to save for rainy days and future purchases, such as my college and their retirement. After I got my first job, my parents taught me about various investment options, such as CDs, treasury bonds, mutual funds, and day trading. Under their supervision, I placed some day trades to gain familiarity with trading and acclimate myself to the associated risk. If I lost money on some trades, they helped me understand my mistakes and gave pointers on how I could offset the loss. For instance, one of their mantras is that if a stock we buy goes into a loss, unless the company is in dire circumstances (e.g., a lawsuit), it’s usually better to hold. “A high tide in the market will lift all stocks, just wait for it and then settle the trade,” they say.

What was your first job and why did you get it?
My first job was a part-time software engineering internship I took at college. I took the job primarily so I could show something on my resume when applying for summer internships.

Did you worry about money growing up?
No, I knew my parents had a good grasp on our finances. While our lifestyle was modest, they ensured I had everything I needed. They also reassured me that we had enough for rainy days. I remember there were a couple of months where my dad was out of work, yet they never showed any signs of stress or shared any concerns about money. “This is part of life”, they said, “we have saved enough for such rainy days, so don’t worry. And remember, this time will pass, and it’ll be back to normal.”

Do you worry about money now?
Kind of. I have a solid job, decent savings, and with my frugal/minimalist lifestyle, I am not worried about money in the short term. Long-term is another story. With the rise of AI, it’s uncertain if software engineering is a good, sustainable career. If AI replaces my job or reduces my earning potential, I would definitely be in trouble, and that’s my greatest worry. Consequently, I am constantly worried about saving for the future.

At what age did you become financially responsible for yourself and do you have a financial safety net?
I am still not financially independent. I live with my parents, and while I do pay the bills, I know they will happily cover for me if needed. Thus, I don’t feel the same level of responsibility as someone living by themselves. I do have a financial safety net; I have enough savings to cover my living expenses for a few months. Plus, I know my parents will help me out if needed.

Do you or have you ever received passive or inherited income? If yes, please explain.
My parents gave me $10,000 when I started college. I used some of that to cover my living expenses the first year of college and put the rest in a savings account.

The Real Emmy Winners Are Women Over 50

by jummy84 September 13, 2025
written by jummy84

It’s not every year we can say this, so when we can, we say it with our full chests: It was a great year for women over 50 in TV.

At the 2025 Emmys, which will be broadcast this Sunday on CBS, 13 women over the age of 50 are nominated for their performances across the drama, comedy, and limited series categories. Four of the nominees—Jean Smart, Kathy Bates, Catherine O’Hara, and Deirdre O’Connell—are even over the age of 70. In an industry (and society, for that matter) which has historically discarded women after they’ve aged out of the “sexy love interest” role, this is a welcome win.

For decades, we’ve heard some of the most talented women in the game express fear that they will “age out” of Hollywood, or that there were no good roles available aside from “concerned grandmother” or “evil stepmother” or any other role that would certainly fail the Bechdel test. Back in 2014 Meryl Streep remarked on our “youth-obsessed” culture, telling People that after she turned 40 in 1989 she was “not offered any female adventurers, or love interests, or heroes, or demons. I was offered witches because I was ‘old’ at 40.”

At least this past year, things have clearly improved for both TV and movies; 4 of the 10 women actors who were nominated for Oscars in 2025 were over the age of 50—including three in the leading actress category.

However, the awards show circuit doesn’t always reflect reality. In 2024 Ms. Magazine bemoaned the dearth of roles for women over 40, citing a study from San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, which found these roles had decreased 6 percent between 2015 and 2022. In their recently released 2024–2025 report, the Center found that women characters have remained younger than their male counterparts (though, as anyone who’s ever watched a teen drama knows, actors will often play younger than they are in real life).

“I’ve had some time to take perspective on the way the brand is going, and I feel that I’m kind of growing up,” designer Patricio Campillo told Fashionista in an interview a few days before his Spring 2026 show. “I’ve come to realize what has actually allowed me to create my life. And I think …

Currently rereading Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, and my favorite reading spot in the city is definitely Central Park. I take the uptown train to 72nd Street to catch a breath of fresh air, admire the changing leaves, and take a break from the Midtown hustle and bustle. It only feels right to wear a cashmere crewneck or an oversized knit on these park dates, so if that sounds like you’re vibe, then I promise you’re going to love these 28 fall sweaters from Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic.

I’m talking striped sweaters that our editors can’t get enough of, cozy cardigans for a French woman-inspired fall, and anything cashmere. My favorite way to style a knit is with a pair of tailored jeans and a chic, slim loafer.

Stay ahead of the fall trends by shopping these 28 chic sweaters from Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic for a sophisticated fall closet.

We also reached out to LinkedIn enquiring about their discrimination policy. They pointed me towards Responsible AI Principles, which reads: “We work to ensure that our use of AI benefits all members fairly, without causing or amplifying unfair bias.” The Job Policies page includes a clause on discrimination: “LinkedIn prohibits discrimination in job posts based on protected characteristics, including age, gender, gender identity, religion, ethnicity, race, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, and any other basis protected under law. In a jurisdiction where it is legally permissible to do so, LinkedIn may permit language in posts expressing preference for members of certain groups historically disadvantaged in hiring in that location.”

Burgundy Nail Ideas to Try in Fall 2025

Burgundy Nail Ideas to Try in Fall 2025

by jummy84 September 12, 2025
written by jummy84

The quickest way to cure your end-of-summer-blues is that first fall manicure, and we’ve got the burgundy nail ideas to inspire it. The moody shade can feel off-limits until September hits, but each year, we’re reminded why it’s worth the wait.

This fall, celebs have wasted no time dipping into wine-colored nail looks. From Jennifer Lopez’s vampy manicure to Dakota Johnson’s minimalist merlot, the classic fall nail color is more popular than ever. “I would definitely call burgundy a fall staple in the color realm,” Steph Stone, Essie celebrity manicurist, tells Glamour. “Maybe it’s something about our wardrobes changing and wanting to lean into colors and clothing that feel cozy.”

Celebrity nail stylist Elle Gerstein, who has worked with the likes of Julianne Moore, Kate Beckinsale, and Blake Lively, says that burgundy is a great transition color and no-fail classic. “I like to call it a merlot or oxblood,” she says.

According to color theory, certain shades work beautifully with burgundy. “Burgundy pairs well with the leaves turning and those tones—marigolds and burnt oranges look stunning with it,” says Gerstein. “It’s very rich and jewel-toned. It could also look stunning with a blushy pink and anything with gold detailing. It really goes from the fall to the holiday.”

If your current TikTok feed is full of Gen-Z and millennial users debating short nails verses long-almond nail shape nails, rest assured that burgundy nails work with either camp. But Stone, who works with clients like Hailey Bieber and Miley Cyrus, and is known for her artistry and intricate designs, says her favorite way to wear burgundy is on short natural nails. “Since it is such a deep color, wearing it on short nails looks very chic and put together,” she says.

When it comes to creating burgundy nail designs, her tried-and-true staple is Essie’s Wicked. “Wicked is forever my timeless fall go-to,” Stone says. “You can never go wrong with it.”

To inspire your next salon appointment, find Instagram’s best burgundy nail ideas ahead.

The Fall 2025 Going-Out Outfit It Girls Are Wearing

by jummy84 September 12, 2025
written by jummy84

Now that it’s mid-September, chances are that your fall social calendar is filling up, and you’re going to need after-dark outfits. While jeans and a nice top is a pretty fool-proof combination, there are going-out outfits that are more posh, and Chase Sui Wonders just put one on display. For her attendance at a Chanel dinner in NYC this week, Wonders opted for an all-black outfit that would’ve looked as chic in the ’90s as it does in 2025.

As someone who loves a miniskirt outfit this time of year and is as invested in ’90s style as every other fashion person, Wonders’ outfit really spoke to me. With her leather miniskirt, she wore a shirt trend that was everywhere during the decade, along with a shoe trend that Chanel made famous. I’m referring to a silk button-down shirt and slingback block-heel shoes (yes, the cap-toe ones). The beauty of this posh going-out outfit is that it’s quite simple to put together, and you might even have similar pieces in your closet already.

For an even more night out-friendly look, do as Wonders did and button just a few buttons in the center of the shirt. Keep scrolling to see what I mean and shop similar pieces to recreate her ’90s-inspired outfit.
